I live in the So Cal area. I look around, using the normal (I thought) channels to find a nice vise, and I come up empty. I'm probably doing it wrong, or it may be true that Smitty is sucking up all the good deals in So Cal. Actually, I'm sure he works very hard looking for the great deals, and he knows just where to look. That's great. Keep saving old vises from the scraper. No hard feelings.

What’s the story on that raised up anvil section? I’ve seen it before. Was there a certain time period or set of circumstances under which Wilton made them that way?

Speaking of contrasts here is an old pic from my files with one of my babies sitting with a Reed 406. You might recognize the double swiveller.

The raised anvils were a option Wilton offered for a little while on the baby bullets from the start till about 1965 I believe.

Agreed, a tough life indeed---But the moral fiber of the family unit was much stronger then and every family member had their responsibilities and pulled their weight.---And were devoid of any technological distractions that IMO plague todays society.---So the tough life was probably the more rewarding, all things considered.

I am fond of small, and clamp on vises. I have a few interesting ones.
**and one that has a loop where you would expect to see the pipe jaws.**

Possibly one of these? Swivel jaw attachment shown in the scan. I'd like to own one.

Loydski: nice find getting a baby bullet. couldn't have happened to a nicer and more deserving guy. now you need to find the power arm for it and strip it and put BLO on it and maybe it will be your favorite vise like my baby is mine. speaking of that i've been looking for another one ever since I found my first one and not even a sniff so all the ones up here must be going on the big auction site.

nice mounting vise for the baby on the Reed 107. any chance you might have a few pictures of your vise family to put over on Shift's revived "HOW MANY VISES DO YOU OWN THREAD"?

Nice find Asakrick ! The pic looks like my vise, but they use the term swivel.
This is a fixed "loop". I am not sure if it is the same. I did find a "5" stamped on the anvil area and the jaws are 2 5/8". The catalog page notes the No. 5 has a swivel attachment, not sure what they mean.

There is another part that fits into the "loop" for irregular shaped pieces that it swivels on, I consider it a nice find for you.

The attachment has a pin on the bottom that would drop in the hole on the loop. The top part is a long triangle shape that conforns to a wedge shape being held in the jaws.

There is another part that fits into the "loop" for irregular shaped pieces that it swivels on, I consider it a nice find for you.

I just finished my weekend Bull Dog vise rescue. The vise had been painted four different colors over the years. It took four hours to bring this vise up to speed.

Bought a Wilton vise today (my first). Wanted one with 5" jaws, been watching craigslist for the right one to come along. Ended up with this.
Number stamped on it is 101164, date is 12/94.
Bought this because it's in better shape than others I've seen; not beat up with hammer marks, jaws are like new, and all 3 handles are straight. Said he got it from the company he worked for, was used to clamp down on plastic parts to test the part.

Note in top view picture that the pins are sticking out. Seller said the casing nut was stripped (reason his company got rid of it, didn't want to hassle with it) He called Wilton, they sent him a new one free of charge. Said he didn't use the vise, sat under his bench for a couple years. He put the new casing nut in to sell it but didn't bother to pound the pins back in flush.

I noticed the smooth side of pins were out, so thought (hoped) he had trouble pounding the spline side in and just stopped trying. Jaw screwed in and out fine, price was ok, I bought it.
Took it apart tonight and found that the casing nut is indeed brand new, but there aren't any holes for the pins. Is this how they sell them, the owner has to drill the holes?
Part number on the nut is 101041-1

Get the proper drill bit; use a clamp to hold the end on the nut tight against the nut holder; make sure the holes in the body and nut holder are aligned; pull one pin out, drill the hole; hammer the pin flush. Pull the other pin out and repeat the procedure.

101043 - this number is the part number of that respective part, body+ static jaw; the vise is in excellent condition.

Picked up this ugly duckling recently. Paid too much for it, but I just kinda wanted it. A bit lighter built than a Reed, Hollands etc but solid enough.
4-1/4" jaws.

Of course it will get refurbed in time.......

Thanks. Yes, I treat most of my vises with it. It really seems to preserve and enhance the bare metal after paint removal.

I'd seen drives using it on his vises and tried it on my Reed 214R.

Get the proper drill bit; use a clamp to hold the end on the nut tight against the nut holder; make sure the holes in the body and nut holder are aligned; pull one pin out, drill the hole; hammer the pin flush. Pull the other pin out and repeat the procedure.

Thanks kw. There was one other issue I came across. The horseshoe washer is scored on both sides and the thrust washer is missing. Is the scoring normal wear? Can I just get any washer or is it machined to a specific thickness? Which would mean I should just get both?

I am not sure if the 500 S has a thrust washer in the first place but as far as the collar "horseshoe washer" is concerned, since your vise seems to be in good shape, if this was my vise I would not go the cheap route and try to Jerry rig something out of a washer, it probably would end up being worst than what you already have.

Notwithstanding the collar issue, the vise seems to be fairly good shape and to do it justice, I would try to find a real replacement collar. The two sources that immediately come to mind are either from one of the GJ members named autopts or from GJ own master machinist wizard KMScott (Dr. Scott.)

Is the wear on the collar to a degree that it is causing backlash and slop? If not then you might want to just grease it and use it as is.
