Ha! Every ad I clicked on was gone!

Rick - Thanks for posting that Ad, The Champion side is one I have, but have no info on. Do you happen to know the date of the ad?

That Chinese vise is kinda cool! Probably one of the few Chinese tools I'd be tempted by! (Pre chi-com by the looks!) Mayer, is the D jaw a swivel? I see part of a line there... :dunno:

I wonder if it translates to "tool steel for ships"? Hardly makes sense... Steel tools (Plural) for Ships? :dunno:

No 802's here. These people advertised as Shepard. May be of help.

Thanks akasrick! I have many scans of every Prentiss model made, including the Shepards, but I don't have anything on the no. 82. It's actually the only vise that I own that I don't have a scan for.

I've seen some pretty obscene prices being paid for catalogs on eBay lately and was hoping they were purchased by a member here who would be willing to share.

Beats the crud out of me. I certainly don't understand pinyin nor would I know how to translate it without the help of my friend's wife.

She said that pinyin didn't start being used in China until the '60s, but everything about that vise sure seems older than the '60s to me. *shrug* I dunno.

*edit*

I think we might have found a vise that Fierljeppen isn't likely to have an original print ad for... Ha!

its there! 12 on the anvil!!

Yes. Like my 114, I think your first 1 is so lightly stamped it hardly shows, but I’m pretty sure it’s 112.
Last weekend I picked up a small table vise I think is a Bonney standard No.1. Advertised to have 1-1/2” jaws; I measured 1-7/16”. It was gooped up with what I think was mostly shellac with some black pigment - maybe the advertised “black baking enamel.” But it was uneven and all over everything, even the threads, so I soaked it in alcohol and wiped and brushed it off.
My daughter has been doing small metal work and will probably steal it from me, but not before I BLO it (maybe mix in some black enamel paint to get it back to the color it was, but a tidier job). Third pic is with the “hulking” 2” No114.

Not to hijack or interrupt..
My thoughts on them
Shellac, varnish were the were the goto finishes for the home at one time. That will easily chip off with a chisel. I drop them into a bucket of Simple green for a few nights.
Any finish that survives I guess is the original finish. I put pigmented wax on them after. They remind me of old window sills that weren't scraped after putting enamel on.
As to the discrepancy with the jaw sizes, I've read that different molds were needed, iron - steel. I think - office - advertising - production, but who doesn't like shiny jaws. or for that matter a donor vise.
They are hulks :)
Anyways my thoughts on them.

Obviously most of us are perusing vises for sale daily. The only reason I'm posting this one is condition so maybe one of you can negotiate and pick it up. The Letgo seller in Carson, CA has this Hollands 14 priced a little high but check out those minty jaws and towers. This vise looks unused and appears to retain some of the original paint. 91a9a48bb17fb61d7e09ac7dc8d71dbf.jpge80d636d91572327d579dd0ea300b388.jpgb27945cbef8b3197335d20615f9d0f53.jpgf2145a39f1f951948a6ff3308fd78fb1.jpg

Wish I lived closer to this one. Nice condition Athol 6" 626 Swivel. Price is on the high side but not too many big ones in this condition show up anymore.

Ive seen that for a while. IF I was in need of a large quality vise, I would make the trip around the lake, i've done it once before. That one looks nice and he will probably deal since its been on there for a while.

First time poster. I found several threads about restoring vises and decided to join.

Picked up this 1750 Wilton bullet locally for $20. Belonged to a really nice woman who was only selling it because she was moving. Originally was her grandfather’s, but the year is 1985. Already disassembled it since it wasn’t remotely rusted stuck. Jaws looked good, some minor rust to clean and then I’m going to primer it matte black and paint it glossy black.

It’s not stamped USA but from what I read in other threads of the pipe jaws are separate then it’s USA.

Bob: another nice thing about those Morgan vises is if the swivel brakes or you don't want to use it there is a 3rd mounting hole to make it a not swivel vise.

I think that Morgan 80 weighs about 220 so while it's a big un its not a Reed or Holland's that weigh closer to 300 pounds.

thanks for taking the time to take and post up a pic of that Morgan.

Fier: I love all those CATALOG PAGES you post. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!

WELL DONE!!

Beautiful job on the workshop, it looks like it took more than a few weekends to pull it together.

Those are nice Morgan's! My 138 is naked wrapped in plastic for the winter, paint in spring. My main user combo, a 150 and 138.

Here is a little Wilton I refurbished a little while ago. Jaws a little over 2" width.

A naked 138.....hmmmmmmmm :)

Most of our wives/girlfriends already think we are nuts for liking tools and in particular vises so much. We do not need the stigma of being called vise perverts in addition (in other words keep your lust for vises a secret) :lol_hitti

This is my main vice housed in my motorbike workshop.
It swivels and the jaws open wide,it’s not vintage but the price was to good to turn down.

Johnny

That looks like a nice vise. I can not clearly see the brand name. What is the brand and what is the CO?

I found an interesting Chas Parker no.974 yesterday. The guy said he got it from his uncle who was a career navy man. It’s been painted battleship gray and it’s in great shape.the handle has been tapped on but the body barely has a mark on it.331fde0b8c6046b248df1b3b66c9fa08.jpg08d2aad9f9ae39400f6214a58a700cae.jpg16ca4ec9ba6ced4cb8b8da661b949e97.jpg
