Two things:

  1. The screw has been replaced (probably non Wilton)
  2. and you should never post a live CL link for something not yet in your hands. -Lots of lurkers will try to scoop you on the item...

Thanks, I sent your comment to my SIL, he's probably with the seller right now. I removed the link.

Anybody familiar with this Columbian vise ? It's just.. different.
Cant enlarge the pics to see a model number clearly . Looks like an exposed screw model.
Price is reasonable.

Brian

That’s an easy one...

It’s a “penny pincher” model
Interesting shape...light duty “homeowner” category vise.
Looks good in bright red. GJ member zrx61 posted a pic of one long ago.

The swivel locks on the vise were in rough shape. I ended up heating the ends on the handles and hitting them flat to get them off. This allowed me to straighten the handles out and clean up the swivels on a belt grinder. I re peened the ends and polished.9a60767a2c4b70e09b1d013edb2c000b.jpg608acfee8a07de06509635ea050d5a76.jpg569a5fec83b7dd90333d93050f3ad00b.jpg

may be missing a chunk of static jaw casting at bottom below the screw.

He got it for $50, he's a metal shop teacher and is going to let the kids work on it.

Here’s the finished product from my Simplex 61CP restoration. It took 21 hours from start to finish.201983c2f969119551ea9a6fc06c724a.jpg06b635abf7b85ed23f05502da2bb02c0.jpgb2fc2cf03cce7980d34b1c294743c53d.jpga8e3abe14ae70d80f679d17648a4a7a8.jpg

I'm stunned! Can you post more details from the restoration, how did you get it so clean? I have a RI 597 to do next year

Thanks Honza, most of the work was done with an angle grinder. I used wire wheels for the sides and sanding discs for the more heavily damaged areas. There aren’t any fillers so that’s why it took so long. People will probably laugh but the final sanding on the slide was done with a random orbital palm sander. The final grit was 320 before I switched to buffing wheels on the angle grinder. It’s painted with rust-oleum hammered bright red.

As long as the screw on that C3 is indeed the correct thread pitch for the original Wilton nut, it's length shouldn't be an issue. I replaced my Wilton 600's screw with a brand new one just for cosmetic reasons and it turned out the new 600's are a bit longer. I had to shorten it.

I would also be looking at a new set of jaws as those look hammered AF. Probably looking at around $100 either from autopts or kmscott. As mgm noted though, that looks like a nasty chunk missing at the front of the static. Depending how that occurred and how it affects the integrity of how the slide travels into the body, it could be a futile repair.

Pennypincher on adjustable stand.

You can find a Pennypincher on eBay just about any day of the week.

Very nice sir. You can be very proud of that restoration and I especially like that gray hammered finish.

Here are some more pictures of the Triumph vise. It’s pretty different in how they enclosed the screw and nut on this brand of vise. The jaws are 60mm or 2 1/4 wide and opens around 2 1/2in and weighs about 5lbs. I’m kind of thinking it may be forged instead of cast since the jaws have a very thin cross section.

Here is an unmarked vise that I picked up . The only marks are 3-1 and 3-3. It measures 4 1/4" wide jaws x 7" opening. Notice the swivel base. This is a really smooth operating vise and the jaws line up perfect. It's pretty heavy too.

I have a quick favor to ask of anyone who has a Prentiss 56 or 96 w/ removable jaws.

The dynamic jaw/slide from the badly broken Prentiss no.5/no.22 I have is in pretty decent shape. I'm trying to detemine if it will fit the 6" non swivel jaw vises as well.

Here's a catalog page I've got saved with all 4 varieties. faf832b536534e11ccc58179a4b2a6cf.jpg
The non swivel jaw vises(56/96) are listed as opening 10" and the swivel jaw versions (5/22) are listed as opening 9". I'm thinking the dynamic assembly was the same but the swivel jaws opened less due to the body of the vise being longer.

Here are the critical dimensions of the dynamic from a swivel jaw version.

22 7/8" long slide (measured underneath end to end)
4dcfbb6080d7959376a24662a39a902f.jpg
Slide is 2 3/4" by 4"
8b1003f94b64477c23d775b161830064.jpg5d0827f05dae517e6eee8af21a26d23b.jpg
Lastly, from the bottom of the slide to the center of the jaw screw is right about 8 1/2".b3a169c9a1ceb57553d3e926cb391855.jpg

Much thanks in advance for any help. The more models this will fit the greater chances I have of helping a broken vise live on!

Nah the jaw towers are taller on the swivel jaw models and that’s how I was pretty certain when you showed a picture at the start it was a swivel jaw model. I could be mistaken but I’m 90% certain on this.

It's been a while since my last vise post, so I thought I'd share a before and after pic of my "new" old Wilton C0.

Bought it at an auction last spring, cleaned it up and mounted it on my bench. The paint is Rustoleum Hammered gray, brushed on. Also added some bumpers on the handle to make it less "clanky". Date code is 6-69.

It replaced my 4" Wilton bullet which I thought was a little too big for my needs. This one fits my bench a little better, plus has the pipe jaws which come in handy.

Thanks for looking.

Tom

I picked up this Prentiss Bulldog No 51 bench vise and this Sargent & Co No 105 saw vise at a sale today. For more background, see the writeup on the Garage Sale thread here:

Here’s the finished product from my Simplex 61CP restoration. It took 21 hours from start to finish.201983c2f969119551ea9a6fc06c724a.jpg

Smitty,
I don't usually like the old vises painted to look new. There are a few times where that hasn't been the case. The job you did on this vise is outstanding!

That’s an easy one...

It’s a “penny pincher” model
Interesting shape...light duty “homeowner” category vise.
Looks good in bright red. GJ member zrx61 posted a pic of one long ago.

Thank You turns out I know the seller and will pick it up tomorrow.

I was really impressed by the paint color you used. Looks very good.

Had to smile at your vise "was a little too big for my needs" statement. You might as well be speaking a foreign language as most that follow this site will not understand that.

Pelletman, that A.S. looks in real nice condition as far as the pics show.---Looks like a 5'' or 6'' vise so I'd say it's worth it, maybe a little more, but as always, maybe the seller will take a little less.:dunno:

I was gonna say I'm guessing 4-4.5", unless those feet are monsters the jaws look about as wide as the boot. I have size 14's and they tape about 4.5" at widest :headscrat

Thanks, RBarnes. I think the hammered colors look better when brushed on rather than sprayed. It's easier to get the hammered, textured look.

Yeah, I forgot who my audience is here :) Here's a pic of the old vise on my bench. It may look small to most here, but I thought it was overkill for my uses. I'm more of a wood guy than a metal guy.
