Finally deciding to restore the vice that was mounted on a bench in the backyard of a house I bought five years ago. It needs lots of TLC. I believe it is a Wilton 744. Can someone confirm this for me?
Dr. Scott, I don't think they left the factory loose. I think, when in use, and the handle is allowed to drop, the handle head smacks the main screw head and over time it begins to de-peen the knob off. Kinetic energy...
Outlaw, I was referring to the swivel handles like on this 1C that had both knobs rotating. Reed peened the knobs in place but left enough so both knobs rotated. I have seen this on other vises but can not remember which vise did it.
No educated guesses on the "C.M & T. CO."?
Just a WAG.I did see this on Twerty's list...
Crossley Machine & Tool Co., Inc./Sure-Grip Drill Vise & Maxi-Cut Drilling Head/UNK
Good info guys thanks! Kenc184 that’s the same handle on mine. The measurement is the same minus the screw ends. One of my screws was missing and the handle is cracked a bit on one end.

Thanks VA, it has a couple of minor issues but I’d give it a solid B+ for an 80 +/- year old vise.Real nice Smitty.---If you are going to collect, collect the nice ones.---If you are going to use, get the used ones.---JMO.
Wow, what a find.
Someone educate me, if this baby bullet is mint in the box and has never been used, how come it seems to have bits of red paint under the green in the one photo?

The dynamic jaw seems to have been replaced also. The static jaw is serrated but the dynamic jaw is smooth and one of the retaining screws is really mangled looking. The box indicates a vise with serrated jaws.
Came upon a Hollands 16, anyone interested? Super heavy, not cracked and no welds. Jaw has a chunk missing however.
Anyone have any documentation on this?

Nice vise but I have to ask...what’s going on in your avatar???Came upon a Hollands 16, anyone interested? Super heavy, not cracked and no welds. Jaw has a chunk missing however.

Found a 4" Wilton Cadet vise that was cast with "Sample" on the side. Beside that is "5/30" cast and above is "111006". Any thoughts on if the Samples were made to the same quality as full production?

You do know it's blasphemy approaching on heresy to post a comment/question like that without accompanying pics right?![]()
Not mine. Is for sale. New to Wilton vises and didn’t know if a “sample” was worth the normal asking prices.
Well Rusty, that little Wilton hasn't sold yet but it has found a new owner as of now.---Evidently there is no price celling on those little buggers.---There is no (What The Market Will Bear), it bears anything tossed at.

I don't understand why the demand is so high for these vises. The 1950 catalog said that they made "tens of thousands". That means that there is a substantial supply out there, yet for about -10- years they continue to sell at an extreme premium price.
I don't get it?![]()

Merry Christmas everyone! German super vise I picked up since I was last here. Twelve inch jaw, thirty inches tall and a little over 700 lbs. This is a before picture and I will get back to you later with an after picture.![]()
