The company name and address places them 1908-1958. Maybe the model number will narrow it down more, but I do suspect it’s going to be “His Majesty’s government,” after all.

Lugz, Nice finds, esp on the binoculars! I have several pairs of the US version of those, plus at least one pair of post war civvies.

- 6X
- individual eye focus, and
- on my WWII pair, the range finder.

They have become my "GO To" binocs for most use! Very Clear, very good light collectors, so good at dusk or in some cases, even at night! (No, don't go there...)

I should do a "how many binocs, monoculars, telescopes, spotting scopes do I have?" someday... (I know I have 3 Monoculars, and at least 2 spotting scopes. The others I have no clue...)

My oldest pair of Binocs are hanging on my display wall of camping/hunting/fishing stuff. I think those are WWI. Certainly the era.

topop101 - the logo on that J F Richards pioneer axe is great.

All - So I ended last year with a Freecycle pickup and I started this year with another. I don't have pics because it is apart but I will describe it and add some pics from the interwebs.

I got a vintage REGMA (?) drafting table with a really cool industrial feel and a cool counterweight mechanism. The original top was gone and replaced with good quality (but ugly) 3/4 furniture grade plywood. The counterweight weighs 94 pounds.

I am in the process of re-configuring it a bit and cutting the top down (it was not the original anyway) to make a homework/lego/crafts desk for my 11 year old grandson who has his own room for the first time. I have removed the counterweight for now because without the weight of a full top it was a definite death trap. Surprisingly my daughter loves it, but sort of wanted me to make it into a cool foldaway dining table and sell it. She is fully on board and helping with the desk project. We are currently fighting over whether they can take it with them when they move out after the school year. I have a woodworker at work who is drooling at the base and wants the opportunity to build a top worthy of it. We have assembled it enough to play with the mechanism and it is just cool.

Without further ado... example pics (I will get real pics once I finish the desk)

Boy that brings back memories! I never had the pleasure of using that particular brand of drafting table, but if I could get back the hours I spent working at a drafting table, I'd be a young man again!

I'd love to have the space for one like that (maybe smaller) with the small elbow arm. I've seen a couple of the small arms, but they always wanted stupid money for them...

Hit my first estate sale of the year and came away with a few things. Three US Navy Barometers, military toolbox and some WW2 patches. The tools are being cleaned, pics later. Everything out the door for less the 50.

Edit: Got some items mixed up. The barometers and toolbox are from December, just never posted them.

It's been several years I think since I've posted . Being off I hit as many sales as I can and after 2 years there has been more picks that I could count. I quit , for the most part, getting the heavy iron. The broken body just doesn't like it much . If I'm not buying , I'm cleaning rusty finds up , sharping knives or axes or restoring small vise's , planes and such. I'm learning how to turn a hobby into a bill paying job while still having a blast !
I hit my first estate of the year today for $98 . I grabbed a mixed bag of items but the 2 I liked the most were the $8 keen Kutter double bit axe and the single bit 1857 JF Richards hand made pioneer axe. The lil Hudson bay pattern is crusty but I think will clean up fair.
The huckleberry hound coin bank was just too cool to leave behind , I'm still a kid at heart...

Hey, topop, welcome back! Nice finds, especially the axe!

Posting my modest find (mostly just to subscribe to the new thread).
Finding any old metric tools, let alone a 10mm Snap-on socket in the wild was like striking gold!

46540440032_183f3671ae_c.jpg

Actually, finding that 10mm was finding the other end of the cosmic vortex where all 10mm's fall into.

I suspect you're right.

... even at night! (No, don't go there...)
What?! I wasn't thinking peeping tom, I was thinking poaching! (Remember, I grew up in Pennsyltucky, where everything was legal as long as you didn't get caught! ;))

Thanks, by the way. I KNOW you have a thing for field glasses! These feel really good in the hand, and I did test them briefly while it was still light out. Remarkably clear, no fishbowling.

ALL,

If you're interested...

I posted more photos of the NOS box of MAC 3/8-inch drive sockets and the MAC X2R ratchet in the Mechanic's Tool & Forge thread, linked here.

I started a thread on the 1942 Q.M.C. Low Voltage Circuit Tester, linked here.

Haha. It was most certainly not where they all end up. I searched the boxes for ten minutes and don't think I saw any other 10mm in there.

TOP: WELCOME BACK!! glad to see you are still amongst the living. with your job I bet some days it's more than a close conversation with GOD isn't it? like that little incident you had a couple years ago where you saved yours and another guy's *** with your skills after a blow out that I still can't believe you walked away from. hope the pics of it don't bring back bad memories, but some of the guys need to know stuff happens and you need to be prepared.

keep up the good work and glad to hear you might be spiffing up more cool stuff and working a bit less too.

TEX: not that it matters now, but your Reed that was welded onto it's base at the airport hanger probably was a 204.5 which is really all the vise any of us would ever need for 98% of all our work.

BB: I'm sorry i'm a bit late to the party, but I had a cold last week and forgot to subscribe. best of luck this year with the thread and i'm sure you'll do a fine job keeping us out of Jerry Can hell and past hosts and the rest of us will help if you need a little.

Lug: thanks again for all your effort to make this thread and GJ a fun and learning place to spend a few minutes or hours if we have the time.

ALL: i'm picking up something in the 300 pound range tomorrow JUST BECAUSE and i'll post pics once I have it in my trailer. also since i'm vacating my old shop/storage i'm sort of having my own personal estate sale to dig through and i'm finding buckets and boxes of stuff i forgot I owned. here's a sample of a few things that i'm organizing as I'm moving MY STUFF.

cheers and hope you all have a great 2019.

Lugs. Where can we see pics of your BSA?
It isn't on the road yet, and I am not the 'resto thread' kind of guy (mainly because it would remind me of how little progress I am making!) so the only pics I have are from the day I picked her up. Several unspecified years ago. Those can be seen in the toolkit thread (of course I have almost completed the toolkit before I completed the mechanical work! :shocking:), linked here. I am getting VERY close, though.

You may have missed it, Drives, but the early theme is hooning. Not honing, and not spooning. Hooning. If, like me, you had no idea what it is, scroll back! :)

Very small (bordering on "cute" class) parts cabinet. Meant to hang on a wall or a post. I will have to put some heavy things in the bottom drawers because it's very lightweight. OD green. Label holders. Couldn't resist. Haven't looked for a name yet.

The pressed steel DOE wrench (still can't tell if it's bent or meant to be an obstruction angle) is a Wakefield. I will be posting pics on the Wakefield thread.

The peace pipe is a Blackhawk 4018 hammer head wrench with a 9/16" square opening. Late 1920's or 1930's. Probably for brakes. I'll have to look it up later.

And speaking of whacky tobaccy, the little faded orange rectangle thing near the head of the Blackhawk wrench is a pack of antique rolling papers. Trademarked "LLF" in 1881. Those were in the parts cabinet. All the markings are French except for a small notice that says something about made in the US with permission and authority from L. LaCroix Fils (LLF). That little string gets pushed through a slot in the cardboard on the back side to close the pack. As you guys know, you often find the craziest stuff in old boxes. I'll post some photos later. I don't smoke, and except for grabbing an interesting looking pipe now and again, I don't collect antique or vintage tobacco products. This thing looks legit antique to me, but is it possible there is some hip retro rolling papers thing going on I don't know about?

attachment.php

The red round canister is a Steel Craft 3-pc e-z-out set in an original wooden case with original label, looking at least as old 1950's to me, maybe older.

Steel Craft is a tough name to get a research/historical grip on as a collector. I have a US ZONE (Occupied Germany) Steel Craft spiraling screwdriver. This screw extractor set is Steel Craft New York. And then there is later Steel Craft Japan stuff. I don't know if it's all one enterprise with multiple wings or just a popular name used several times over the years. But this is a cool vintage USA set. Love the red.

Hit an estate sale this morning just because it was on the way. There was a Crafty roller+top, but it turned out to be the lightweight stuff and priced close to new. I spotted an Indestro 1/2" ratchet which turned out to be wearing the Wizard name. Pawing through the samecardboard box, I came up with all these other Wizard goodies. I tossed them all in the Waterloo toolbox just for easy carrying, found nothing else of interest an headed for checkout. I opened up the box, guy asked me if all those tools were already in it. I refrained from saying something like, no, *******, that's why they have individual price tags!
I just said, no I had picked them out of a box on the table. It was marked $1 unless otherwise marked. He pawed through them briefly and said, How about fifteen? Works for me!

Now, in the bottom of the toolbox was another long narrow box which I didn't bother opening. Figured it was so light it must be empty, and it was. But still it turned out to be the find of the day!

Makes the Long C extension almost an afterthought.

I went back to the recycling yard today to get more parts off that Delta drill press. They wanted too much for the whole thing, so I basically tore it down and left all the heavy cast pieces behind.

Here's what I left behind.

And for another $55, basically everything else came home with me. Also snagged a nice wartime Plomb 7/8" combo wrench.

The "D" on the sockets indicates Duro Metal Products, and they are clearly Duro made, Bob. Matching the ratchet and hinge handle OEM. (And just for completion, Western Auto Store 'Wizard' or 'Westcraft' pieces with an "N" on them were made by New Britain.)

C'mon, the hooning discussion didn't go on nearly as long as the Gerry Can Affair. [emoji38]

Oh, and gents, I think Facebook Marketplace must be the latest hot deal venue. I missed out on a free Kalamazoo horizontal band saw and a free Craftsman radial arm saw because I was working today. Both were gone within hours of posting.

Thanks Lugz! I knew about the D, though the family resemblance to Duro-Indestro is so strong you could hardly miss it. I'll probably sell the set, and I have a couple of Duros to fill in the two missing sockets.
I didn't know about the N -- good news since New Britain was the maker of my favorites - Penncraft.

Lugz, surely Rizla rolling papers exists in USA??
Maybe. But I wouldn't know. I don't smoke, nobody in my family smokes, and none of my friends or colleagues smoke. The transformation in this country from smoking to no smoking is nothing short of astounding if you're my age (59). I try to explain it to my kids and they couldn't even imagine it. Until we went to Europe. THEN they had no problems imagining what it was like here, say 30 or 40 years ago. Not only the number but the types of people who smoke in Europe is staggering!

Thanks for the link though! That history is a quick amazing read!

But very cool packaging all the same.
Compared to modern rolling papers, for sure. They're quaint.

Lugz, you have 100 year old rolling papers, all you need is some 100 year old brandy, some NOT 100 year old tobacco and you can have a REAL high rolling nite cap!

BB: i'm still going to make time to see your opening posts and see what I missed out on the first few days. don't tell me I have to finally JOIN FACEBOOK cause i've been avoiding it like the plague and every other tweet, snapchat, and even instagrams that I probably should be using so I can keep up with my adult children. if finding good deals is what it takes then maybe i'm going to fall in and join and see what mischief I can get in to now. thanks again for taking on the hosting role and hope you enjoy it as much as LUGS and others seem to have.

LUG: old rolling papers and did you test them to see if they work? are they like fine wine and even pipe tabacco tastes great rolled in them?

ALL: I've got a trade deal to do still tonight for a Lincoln welder and Toro weedeater for some extra shelving i had and I'll post pics of those when I own them. in the meantime while I was sick I might not have been to willing to be chatty on GJ, but I did manage to make a few deals happen. I found a guy with some 90 pound cement blocks that I can't seem to find any more that match some I already have in place so to sweeten his deal I bought his little Mighty Mac chipper and he drove an hour with about 3000 pounds of my blocks. I thought they were all new, but since they won't really be seen i still was happy I didn't have to load them and unload them by myself.

also picked up another LYON steel 6x3 steel bench and if you guys haven't seen one of these I've put probably a ton of steel or stuff on them and they hold it nicely. great bench for a big vise or just to own and best part was it was just gas and time to pick it up so the 3 hour drive was worth it.

my bride isn't going to be happy the Lyon bench is sitting in front of the house so I best be using it to make something quick.

hope you all have a great weekend!!

I think you will probably find rizlers are still sold at the local 7-11 and WAWA. But, that packaging is different than I remember.
Unless you're 100 years old, I would expect so!

I've been doing a little light reading. Vintage rolling papers are collectibles, and apparently, the older ones like the one I have with the original stapled string are worth some bucks. Even the ones from fifty years later (fifty years ago) can go for $15 to $30 per! Who knew?!

did you test them to see if they work?
The only thing I smoke is venison, turkey, and trout - and I don't inhale! :) (Alright, alright, the occasional cigar...)

...and Madonna.

We don't really use Rizlas here in the states, you are more likely to see ZigZags. Occasionally rolling a smoke when camping is one thing I miss since quitting.

Wheelin' & dealin'! Go! Drives! Go!

ALL: well i'm all caught up now with the HOONING (looks like fun both in Wales and on BBR's youtube video), everyone's picks so far, MERC & JAKE are saying they have TOO MUCH STUFF (we'll fix that), TOPPOP is back in action and i bet his grandson is doing most of the negotiating and that's just mentioning a few of the posts. AND lots of good chatter and tool finds so far.

it's a damn good thing I have my settings set to 100 posts per page cause even at that we are almost on page 2 now. do you all have your page settings in your profile set up to 100 posts per page?

anyway my welder/weedwacker trade deal should be happening this morning to start of my weekend on the right note. Then I found a few more metal cabinets (IMAGINE THAT) that have a unique drawer design that I kinda like and handles i haven't seen before on a fairly common type 18 drawer nut and bolt cabinet. AND since it's a two hour drive my bride will be along for the fun and maybe we'll find some good food near there or something else. one thing I might do this year is put something in my Honda Pilot to use as trading stock like an old vise, tools or a metal cabinet to maybe keep my inventory from looking like that warehouse in Indiana Jone's movies. (funny posts on that rolling rock too).

some of you that are complaining or maybe RELAXING saying it's too cold or middle of winter i'm guessing don't shop on Craigslist, Ebay, Offerup or other places that you don't have to set up a table and chairs for? i've always thought Craigslist was a GARAGE SALE WITH A PURPOSE and it kept me from driving around following old garage sale signs or signs that led me to a ton of toys and baby clothes. give me an old dirty shop or warehouse to wander through and i'm there so TRY HARDER so save some of this stuff from ending up in the SCRAP BINS before there time.

hope you all have a great weekend!!

Oily Nails: I was thinking BEESWAX too instead of Soap and FRETTERS who lives in your part of the world adds linseed oil and some other things to a mixture that also helps to keep old cast iron and steel from rusting. if I had a bar of soap to try I probably would cause it sounds like it works so that will be another thing i'll pick up at sales (i'll have to actually go in the dang house though instead of just the garages).

so would BLO (boiled linseed oil) maybe be ok for wood screws going into wood?

BBR: it looks a bit too firm for MADONA (isn't she 60 now). :bounce:

how about 100 pound Vulcan anvil? or is it 50 pounds and your close up shot makes it look bigger?

Morning Fellas,
First Saturday of the month means Rufforth Autojumble morning!! (swap meet on a farm in and around a couple of big barns)

I may have spent a penny today...sometimes not on the best deals :headscrat

First up a mix of 1" G-clamps (£1 each) a machining clamp (£2) a couple of Carbinerers (£0.50 each) and a set of tiny "foreign" cast pliers (£0.20)

DSC_1111.jpg
(The G-clamps were over priced but it was my first purchase of the day and my brain was asleep and my hands cold...should have got all 4 for £2)

The pliers will go to my 6 YO Nephew. :)

Next up a 5.56mm Ammo Can for £10 (usually aim to pay between £5>£10, so this was my upper limit but I needed something to put my other bits in :) )

DSC_1112.jpg

Now onto the DEALS!! (in my opinion)
Moore&Wright (Sheffield) 1953 MOD Broadarrow marked square set in box £10
Rabone Folding Metal rule £2.50
Starrett USA imperial feeler gauge £1.50!

DSC_1110.jpg

Finally on the way out I passed a stall selling power tools and got this combi bench grinder/beltsander for £40!!

DSC_1113.jpg

Its NEW still in the bags and typical RRP is around £95....the problem with it and the reason he was selling it...it had a Euro 2-pin plug moulded on it not a UK 3-pin......:confused::confused:....I've already cut it off and rewired it :bounce:

Its not the greatest design/quality but a little grinder has been on my "nice to have" list for a while now and the additional sander belt is a bonus. Most bench grinders seem to start at £30 2nd-hand at them moment up here.

Anyway I'm off to the pub for a few beers  whilst we await BlueBombers Radial saw landing!!

Good hunting!!
