Nevermind guys, I was having a moment. After further looking, I realized my issues were stemming from both the left side not having a strut, and a ring someone riveted to the outside of the right, preventing it from sitting flush.

Thanks for all the advice, and bearing with me.

Quick update on the $149 Mac triple stack. I thought about just cleaning it up and using it, but I think the paint must have been softened by fumes in it's former body shop home or something. Any cleaner I used would just smear the grease into the paint.

So I figured I'd just sand and paint over the outsides of the boxes and do the drawer faces. Easy enough. Oh, hell no. Blew the boxes apart, cleaned all the slides, etc. The paint on the bottom box turned to gum when I tried sanding it so that got stripped to bare metal. Everything else got sanded, primed, sanded and painted with the same Rustoleum "Safety Red" protective enamel that I painted my $10 shop cabs with.

Not bad for painting in the driveway, but I don't know if I'd do it again.

Thats a lotta Rustoleum!

My Huot top doesn't have the extra hinged bit, and it sits funny when the lid is up because the front flap is longer than the lid.

Anyway here's my $10 CL miter saw, with a salvaged carbide blade off an RAS.
Seems to be a fully functional bit of semipro kit.

Yep, there's a lot of work in that "After" picture--well done!

That ten dollar chop saw seems pretty you-suckie...nice find.

Boofer: nice work on the Mac boxes. I know it was a lot of work, but those old Mac and Proto boxes might be my favorites.

ALL: I forgot to take pics of my little red 2 foot tall Lincoln Welder, Toro weedeater trade deal for some old shelving, but it's a done deal. i'll learn on this little Lincoln welder and then maybe when i figure out how to weld and power up the big Lincoln torpedo i can maybe build a bridge or something cool and HUGE.

cheers

Bofer Great job on the toolboxes! I've got some Craftsman red & grays I'd like you to paint! ;-)

Slewfoot That $10 Hitachi miter saw is definitely worth a YOU ****!

I am sooooo glad to be hearing all these funky Huot lid stories! I love the box, especially the drawer layouts. It's my garage user. But that lid is a royal PITA! I get mine stuck in a position it's not supposed to be in all the time. I have to physically bend metal back on both side to get it un-stuck.

Cheapest Snap-On tool I ever-got (chisel holder), along with 3 Pony 3/4" X 4' pipe clamps (one's a bit-shorter) $5 the lot.

Smaller-than-small 'small haul' today from my Thursday flea market, which is better than I expected with wind chills in the teens. But I'm happy about both items.

- The thing on top is a Cornwell Feeler Gage stock holder FG-11. It's got a roll in it. I don't have one. Going right in my Cornwell box.

- The HOLD-E-ZEE is an original (pre-Stanley) Upson Bros R-3. I already have an R-3 in my collection, but the markings on my other one are worn off.

I took this photo just for kicks. With all the early plastic handled drivers in there gassing off, you can just imagine what this box smelled like!

Oh man! Is that a Little Boy mod?

That thing looks like a generator, and IIRC it had something about "RPM" on its nameplate (your other pics).

Coolest welder I have seen.

Nice little single-offset DBE in that box of stinkdrivers, LUGZ.
I didn't buy it. The smell was too overpowering! HAHA. No, honestly, I just passed on it. (I know, I know, BB is going to revoke my entry pass into the 'My small but growing DBE' thread! :))

Hehe, stinkdriver.
I have a feeling that one's going to stick. HAHA.

That thar was a Bonney single offset! Although I have a bunch already, I'd have grabbed it anyway, even if it had to ride home duct-taped to the back bumper!

So what is this about stinkdrivers? I had an old plastic toolbox from the 80s and there were a couple of screwdrivers and miscellany in there but at some point it started to smell like someone had taken a dump in that toolbox. I dumped (hehe) the screwdrivers but still have that plastic toolbox and it still stinks but not as bad. I do hate opening it. I think I'll dig it out soon and dump it too.

Am I hearing that it was the plastic handled screwdrivers causing that? What's the story on this?

All: yep some of those old made in USA smell like puke. Not sure why so I’m willing to listen if they can be freshened up or do I need to toss them. I have them zip locked at the moment.

I should've picked it up for you, BB. My bad. I don't normally collect those light duty box end wrenches. Single or double offset. And I believe it was postwar on top of that.

Yes. The very early (1930's-1940's) handles made of pyroxalin have a bad odor too when they begin to disintegrate and gas off, but all those later plastic handles on all kinds of tools, especially screwdrivers, made of cellulose acetate butyrate, really smell awful. You can absolutely clean them up and seal them up with a rattle can semi-gloss polyurethane.

HHmm... :(

I have some C-Man nutdrivers (the ones clear/solid=US/MET), and they don't smell at all.. yet? I hope not.

In addition to the chemistry, some people just don’t smell it. Other people smell it, but don’t find it unpleasant.
I have some that smell bad (to me), and more that don’t. Although the explanations I’ve read would lead me to believe they should all smell bad eventually, some just don’t seem to do so. So, maybe there is some variance in the stability or concentration of the chemicals involved, or there is some environmental factor that can accellerate or retard the offgassing.

Lugz,
Those wouldn't have been that old I don't think but probably were USA made CM.

No big score but at least did find something I wanted to spend a few dollars on. Hit an estate sale this afternoon that advertised "high quality woodworking tools". I'm not sure what was there. From talking with the estate sale company it was mostly power tools. I did find this porcelain tub to clean tools up in and this jar of "wood casters". The guy threw in that little 1/8" ply which I'll use on a box I plan to build. I just can't pass up casters. I know a project will come along where I'll be excited to be able to use these with wooden wheels! The jar also had these caster "holders". Sorry but I don't know what they're called. How do you determine what size to use with a particular set of casters? And how do you remove the casters once they're set in place? Thanks!

PS It was nice to be out there and spending money. ;-)

?? I was covering the entire chronology for you. Early - Pyralite; Later - Cellulose Acetate. Both stink when they decay and off-gas, and I am pretty sure the culprit in the later USA made Craftys was Cellulose Acetate. The drivers in the box were almost surely later (60's, 70's etc) USA Made Crafty or Xcelite.

The caster retainers have a springy part at the top. See the slots, with the sides crimped it a little? The ball on the top of the caster stud will snap through that crimped part and sit above it. Then, a little effort will pull it right back out. If it's been in awhile, the retaner may loosen in the wooden leg and pull out instead of releasing the caster. It's probably better to pry against the retainer rather than just pulling on the caster. make sure to drill the holes for the retainer deep enough to leave room for the caster top ball.

Also, you want the hole to be a press fit on the straight body of the retainer piece. I little grease on the knob of the caster stem can't hurt either...

"Stink drivers!" Yeah that stinker will stick!

Xcelite is notorious for the vomit smell, and yes, some do, some don't. Someone tried dipping them in something - Lacquer thinner? - MEK? - and letting that dry to 'shine" them and I think it also sealed the smell? I'll have to looks for my notes...

Balisol I think it was, and the castor holders are called sockets.

So over the weekend I had that bigish tool score and part of it was a Stanley #5 plane. Well, I had a couple of those that were in pretty ratty condition, so I spent some time putting the best parts together for a good working plane. That is a nice handy size so I wanted something that worked well. Here it is:

Also, picked these up off the 'bay this week. Not the cheapest, but I love the older Proto

Just got home from work. Wow - thanks everyone for the very kind words. I'm learning as I go. I don't have a builds thread, so I posted here hoping that would be ok.

I didn't chime in on all the New Year's gratitude for a great 2018 thread (and host!) because it had already been said far better than I could express, but this thread and it's members are awesome. You all have taught me a lot, given me a great many chuckles and have saved me thousands of dollars over the past year or so. Thanks all!

ALL: Xcelite might be the worst as far as smell and i'll have to learn more on how to fix them cause I like their quality (other than the horrible smell). funny my bride's toolbox under the sink always smelled like PUKE and I think she had that little screwdriver set in it. I'll toss it now and get her a new little toolbox and fill it up with some quality old USA made tools cause the last time the microwave had an issue SHE FIXED IT.

I'm picking up a few things today and hopefully i'll take a few pictures. last week's 90 pound cement block purchase of 32 of them was good exercise for me yesterday taking 2 at a time in my wheelbarrow to my backyard that is a few hundred feet downhill on a sidewalk. believe me i was wondering why i wasn't hiring some kid to do this, but after i finished it I knew I would have had to work out a couple hours in a gym to get that much exercise. I also started moving my 200 ish sandbags to the backyard too that should make my bride happy and the neighbors can quit teasing me that i'm preparing for THE FLOOD since I live on top of the hill.

hope you all find something today that makes you smile.
