Thanks all, I knew as soon as I saw it that it was a rare find. Prentiss 22’s rarely come up for sale in today’s market so I feel lucky to have found it. I had a feeling KMS would appreciate the jaw closeup. This vise was a craftsman’s baby back in the day and it shows. I believe the paint to be original so I left the vise as is.

You have my vote for best typo of the thread. That old Cubit has ruined many a bachelor's plans...

Yea I try to proofread and edit before I post, but I miss something every time.---As blind as I am it's a wonder that I'm even posting in the right forum.---I wonder what I've misspelled in this post.---I know it's there somewhere but I just can't see it.:willy_nil

Smitty, that's a beauty.---You got to wonder how a vise like that dodged all the hammers and saws over the years.---Bound to have found a dark corner somewhere and hid for decades.

Thanks VA, yeah I’ve wondered the same thing. The guy that I got it from said that it spent the last 25 years in storage. I like to think that’s there we’re responsible tool owners back in the day who respected the quality tools that they spent their hard earned money for. Somebody purchased this vise in the 30’s and treated it with kid gloves over the years. I’ll say it again, I feel lucky to have it.

Picked up this tiny (13/16" jaw width) hand (more like thumb and forefinger) vise at my flea market this morning. It has the slightest of knurling on both jaws. It's going to go in my jewelers' workbench.

Guys,
I've been away for a while, busy with work, but everyone just calm down and know that I'm still out there lurking the streets, waiting to strike when the time is right for a deal. Last night the time was right. Scored this Schiller Park Wilton 800S with date code of 7-11-1977 (unless 11-7-1977?) Jaws and casting are in excellent shape. Only 90 degrees (1/4 turn) of backlash in the screw which is many times the case on new vises I've acquired.
Came with a nice roll around stand too. Its kinda low, because apparently the old timer did transmission work.
So basically I'll spend the next few days debating whether to keep it it or sell it.

I just looked up the retail price for a new one. With tax it would run 4 grand from Amazon but they’d ship for free.

Smitty:
I’m even more impressed with your find. That big Prentiss is a real time machine. I too am amazed that a big vise like that escaped from the seemingly inevitable scars of regular work.

Lugz:
Nice little clamper you found. Here is a very similiar big brother from my little collection. (if anybody thinks “big” is an inch and a half. :))

Thanks Shift, the vise gets a prime spot on a bench corner. Here’s a pic of the vise with its little brother. The no. 20 is in the same boat condition wise.1c59624bf9d2e9368729ada0deae5b95.jpg

There is a No 21 for sale fairly close to me, and before I saw your fine examples I wasn't really thinking about getting it. Well...now I am!!

Lugnutz, I was going to say nice handvise, but after seeing the dice, nice fingervise!
Haha. 'Zackly!

Very similar. The screw on mine looks hand-forged, hand-threaded, and hand-peened. Just had to have it.

Funny you should say that. I didn't know the vendor, so I didn't have a good feel for how many things I was going to be able to afford in a pkg deal. I pulled seven or eight things out of the old toolbox and we dickered on those but I wouldn't pay what he wanted so I started putting things back. I kept a very early North Bros "YANKEE" ratcheting screwdriver with an unusual spring-loaded screw holder I have never seen before, a DISSTON No. 1 saw set, and the finger vise! :)

This 600s started as a $200 CL find for a friend that quickly turned into a lot of work. I told him I would paint it for him and it spun out of control. We're both pretty damn happy with the end result. I now wish it was mine more than ever!

That's freakin amazing. Now do one with a shark mouth from the P-40 Warhawk!

So what does the vise weight. And anyway we could get a picture of the max opening much appreciated that looks like a solid one.

Alright Razor, please don't take offense to this because I've thought long and hard and studied both your pics and dozens of other pics before asking this, but have you laid a tape measure across those jaws yet because it sure looks like a 600 to me.

If it is indeed an 8 incher what is throwing me off big time is how short it is behind the "anvil" area. I actually have a Wilton 600 and dimensionally it looks identical but every picture of an 800 including Smitty's that we recently discussed is significantly longer. Check out the "as found" pic of my 600 and Smitty's 800 vs. 600 comparison pic.7f5c8aebaf883543f2ed439a60008b14.jpg9a8e65b0b69c1735b89e5f95cbc46851.jpg

Not sure if this is the correct place to post to, but after some searching I can't seem to find the answer

What is the difference between a Reed 204 vs a 204r?
(Or any Reed r vs non r vise)

Other than everyone seeming to like the r version better

Success with the Yose 33C. Now have full movement using just a finger. There is some slight play when it is about 1-2” from closed but past that the slide tightens up and when fully closed there is just a fraction of side to side movement.

I didn’t have kroil which the seller had sprayed before I got it. So that sat soaking for two days. Then I sprayed the WD in the photo and let it soak a few hours and with the HF hammer shown got the handle moving enough to get jaws closed. Sprayed more and it sat another 24hrs and now it’s all set. The swivel handles are still frozen to the carriage bolts from underneath so that will be next. About 120 degrees of backlash in the handle.

For $100 I am thrilled.

First photo is how the vise arrived and where the slide was frozen.

Hey chrisnazzy,
Good point Sir, and no offense taken. And yes, you are correct Sir, its a 600S. No idea how or why I typed 800S. It does have 6" jaws. Its the 2nd largest Wilton machinist vise made. Not the 800. What a difference a little typo makes!
Anyhow, in regards to Wilton machinist vises, I have a couple that have a very unique issue I've never experienced before, until recently a 450S and and a C1 I picked up had.
Has anyone ever found a Wilton machinist vise with a very slightly loose slide bar/dynamic casting fit?
Wilton actually calls it the "precision slide bar", the round tubular piece that fully encases the screw.
The fit between the precision slide bar and the dynamic jaw casting is just slightly loose.
I've not yet found any pins or anything holding these two pieces together, but they are definitely loose.
I've never experienced this before. Anyone ever discovered how they are initially put together at the factory?

It just has a slight rattle on a 450S. I have broke out the feeler gages yet. Are these two parts actually one part cast as one piece?
Actually. On second thought they cant be cast as one piece right? I'll have to go look at it again.

Your dynamic is a two piece, the round slider is threaded on and pinned underneath the Horseshoe washer. You could add a screw and another dowel pin if the one is loose. Look at it close and you can see it is a two piece.

The R versions are the later models. The R models have flat nose vs the meat ball nose of older none R versions. The R models have the oil hole and the split retaining ring/collar which the older ones do not have.

While I have both R and none R models personally I just like the looks of the R models but I know plenty of other folks who actually like the older models. So the preference seems to be all about personal taste rather than something more fundamental.

Finally finished up the Wilton no3 I picked up a couple weeks ago I wanted to keep as much of the original patina as I could so just stripped the paint and wire brushed it and coated with BLO. I tried to highlight the letters and it worked ok. fb353e009a6a6b99ae9f1061d72f4c0c.jpgc9bb08f98f1b4d51eeec9f255e474223.jpg0a8e36c863c31b33da5cfc0faa0322fe.jpg05ca71680af87d74a95b37dc1f377533.jpg

Well I came across this last night and ended up picking it up after work. Had no idea it was a Yost until the guy walked outside with it. Also couldnt tell how big it was from his pictures either. It has obvious "repair" work done to it at one point in its life. Any idea on a date of this guy? Only out $50 as of now for it. d308a453956300422d61b36d004868d6.jpg9b029e1fc43e97e9e3e5caa5aa221d69.jpgcca43a2fe0701fa81261fe7181de448c.jpgdc56b4210a52f6f0b7ee132f3e7d82b5.jpg1e7467cebb2c6b4f91fecd01e7835d63.jpg
