So I went to an estate sale close to work at lunch time three & half hours after it opened and came out with an early Blackhawk !/2" socket set, an unmarked unused rubber mallet, and last but not least a Wilton #820 "baby bullet" on a Power Arm Junior.:bounce:

I wish you could just crop and post the photo, without any words, of the Wilton with the price tag on it on the Vises thread (as Outlaw suggested), but there is a minimal text requirement. Be creative.

Blood test. I am kinda disappointed in this, but I wanted the case enough that I will take my lumps.

I do hate it when they over-restore parts thinking they know what they are doing. It really messes things up.

My first thought reading about the "cleanup" was oooh, I've probably done that before... As someone relatively new to tool-specific picking/collecting what is the line between 'as found', 'cleaned up' and 'ruined'?

Also, I've seen the cautions around cadmium plated stuff but I'm still not exactly sure how to ID it. Any other health related "cleanup" advice?

I can't believe you wasted $4 on that rubber mallet. I see them all day for $3! :shocking:

Oh yeah! Congrats on that socket set and did you say that other thing was a vise?

Please tell us you bought a lottery ticket on the way home yesterday?!!!! :lol_hitti

Cadmium looks kinda dirty/greasy, it's grayish and is generally confined to war-era and earlier tooling. Probably the best way to deal with it is to not wire wheel stuff. Period. Use non-invasive cleaning procedures to deal with any issues. Evaporust works well. That or vinegar, but I am not a big fan of that. Lightly scrub with a nylon brush and soap. Sometimes rubbing it with an oiled cloth works wonders for both cleaning and protecting. Or, if you are not sure, just leave it as is.

Obviously, cleaning up newer stuff, chromed or bare steel, and non-tool objects are different, but we are really talking about collectibles here, and the less you do to them, the happier collectors are.

My actual business is tangential to the antiques world, and the first thing you learn in that business is the less something is touched, the better.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR. I AM NOT QUALIFIED TO DISPENSE MEDICAL ADVICE.

But I’ve read some scary stuff online...
One problem with collecting vintage tools is a lot of them were produced in an explosion of metallurgic experimentation, BEFORE the health effects were revealed by statistical abnormalities among industrial populations...we have those workers to thank, not just for making such beautiful tools, but for suffering with acute, chronic, debilitating, and life-shortening disease so we don’t have to.

To my eye, cadmium looks dull and blotchy, sometimes crusty. Like lead, it’s soft and invites polishing, because it rapidly turns shiny bright.
BUT, ACCORDING TO WHAT I’VE READ...
cadmium wreaks havoc with the skeletal system. Despite the “blood test” suggestion, I read that it integrates into the solid tissues so rapidly, it may not show up in a blood test.

Don’t buff, brush, sand, or scrape it. Don’t breath it, don’t swallow it. Don’t blow it around with compressed air.
Same “don’t” advice applies to other toxic metals.

Be cautious with any unknown surface. I try to work outdoors, and minimally, wear gloves and a dust mask until I have a clue what I’m dealing with. Upgrade if indicated.
Rather than shining up every piece you find on a wire wheel first thing, try de-griming it with an environmentally friendly degreaser first. Some would stop right there. There’s no benefit in red rust, however. I like to card it off mechanically. Many GGers prefer electrolysis or chemical treatment over mechanical removal. I have no experience with that. Any way you do it, there are waste products to dispose of.
JUST MY INEXPERT OPINION

JD,

Click here to see three sockets, bare steel, cadmium, and chromed, side-by-side-by-side. Cadmium is unmistakable (edit: once you know what it looks like). It is gray, dull, soft, and a little grainy, versus bright, hard, and smooth.

Overpaid, but found this. I don’t have a 1/2” version, so this will go into regular use....

While out running errands today, saw a sign and stopped in.

$5 for these 2.

I was going to leave without buying anything, but saw something under the table. Crawled under there and saw the breaker bar, and then saw the yankee.

I don’t have a 3/8” drive breaker bar, so this one will be going into my box for use.

The yankee will be going into my antique box next to my other one I got earlier. They sure are fun tools!

Hopefully back for good, fellas! I'm working on settling down here in Dallas and have been to a couple sales this year already. Nothing major to show but I'll post my finds soon. Great to see the OG posters still at it and also great to see the new guys getting into it.

Is anyone in the Dallas area on here?

Today’s haul.

Overpaid at $65, but the majority is Snap on, Mac, SK, Cornwell, and even grabbed a Herbrand, JH Williams, Barcalo Buffalo, and Husky. Dunno why I grab husky, except to throw it in my trail rig.

Today’s 2nd haul.

Saw this ad for $15 for everything pictured. Saw the RHFT, and figured for $15, it was probably messed up, but I could probably salvage parts for my grandfathers RHFT.

Nope. It works immaculately. 1 RHFT, 1 older quick release with oil hole, Proto professional speed wrench, SK swivel sockets, USA ball peen hammer...

For $15, I couldn’t pass it up. More tools I don’t need, but I will put to use!!!!

Lots of great stuff going on in here. I need to take a day and catch up. I'm now several pages behind...

Finally getting around to cleaning up some finds from this past weekend. The Craftsman grinder didn't work, but at $25, I thought I'd bring it home and see if I could get it back in service. One new power cord later and it's working like a champ.

The rest is the 'usual suspects'. The small tin funnel so the wife won't get mad at me anymore for using one of hers... Bonney and Blackhawk sockets, Craftsman 1/2" drive butterfly ratchet, Bonney A724 1/2" drive breaker bar, Craftsman #3 tappet Duro ignition wrench and a few contract 'grind off' combos (I'm half heartedly working on a set of them). The 100' ROE 'comet' tape is a new one for me. I've not seen that brand before.

Slow day....

Got (yet another) router base with fence for a Dremel tool (make 3) for a $1....

20190320_174728.jpg 20190320_174753.jpg

Found a vintage Pexto dolly in rough shape for a $1....

20190314_121422.jpg

The dolly is beat-up and chipped on the edges....and since I ain't no bodyman, I cleaned it the best I could (and tung oiled it) and will use it as a paperweight or a hold down for when I tool leather....

Nice snag on that Wright, 3bay. Those aren't common here, I find older sockets and wrenches frequently but all round head rats.

What do you think this drawer full is worth?

dsphotohandler.ashx

The online auction noted that some are craftsman, but not all :headscrat

There is also a full drawer of HF spring clamps and another with files and other goodies.

I began keeping them after selling the first batch I ever had. They went to India.

Guess you never run into them either. They are always online it seems.
