This morning I headed to an estate sale that had a few bad pics of some junk tools & toolboxes. The only reason I went was because one of the pics showed what could or couldn't be a 10-drawer Craftsman toolbox. It looked pretty ratty but I need one or two drawers to fix an old gray & red one I've got. Turned out if wasn't a Craftsman so from that perspective - swinging strike!

Anyway, I certainly didn't go thinking I would see any hand planes. I was hardly in the work shop and I spot one under a table - it's a Stanley! No good - beat up, rusted, broken, missing parts and a #4 to boot which I've got. A little further I spot 2 hand planes and 3 block planes. Same story although one of the hand planes was a Shelton, my first to spot in the wild. Now I've circled all the way around and I'm back at the door and look at that first table where earlier I'd grabbed a Ridgid 3-head pipe threader and there is a Stanley plane. I can see it's too long to be a #4 or #5, too short to be a #7 or #8. It's the #6 that I've been hoping to pick up for quite a while!! Rusty and dirty, tote is broken and I'll probably replace it. Plane iron is Sweetheart. The adjustment lever has got a little wave bend in it which will need to be straightened. The lever cap is a Bedrock! I don't believe the plane is an early Bedrock. It doesn't have the square sides. It has one 1910 patent date and I think by that time (1925-1928) Stanley was squaring off the sides of the Bedrock planes.

The plane has a LOT of crud on it and rust too. Before I put it in some Evaporust I need to get all the dirt and crud off. I'm looking for recommendations on how best to do that without stripping what ever japanning remains? Also, the rod for the tote is stuck in the plane body. What would you guys use to try and remove it without damaging the rod? After I get the crud off and the rust I'll tackle that but ideas on that would also be appreciated.

Here's the kicker...last night before going to bed I looked at some #6 planes on the big auction site and decided I was going to seriously bid on one that ends today about 5pm. Told myself I'd go as high as $90. This morning I find a Stanley #6C for $9. It's great when the stars align!

The rest of the haul...
The thing I spent the most on was $10 for the Ridgid 3-head pipe threader (3/4", 1/2", 3/8"). I got an Armstrong Bridgeport pipe threader for $1 with 2 1", 3/4" & 1/2" Armstrong dies for $1 each, also 2 Toledo 1-1/4" & 1" dies for $1 ea. 20" Proto Professional adjustable - $2. What appears to be a high quality, heavy duty 8" 3-jaw gear puller - $9. It is marked "Drop Forged". Anyone recognize it? Mac Tools fuel pressure gauge - $3. A plastic toolbox full of sockets most of which appear to be mostly US made Craftsman (but I did see a Snap-On, Mac & Indestro too) - $3. A few smalls ($6.50) - vintage Fletcher GoldTip glass cutter in original box, Craftsman 3/8" Thumb wheel ratchet, multi-span wrench, Sportscraft whistle, 2 angel fridge magnets, Hershey kiss keychain, fishing lure replica keychain, University of Texas license plate cover, half-full cans of Buck's Honing Oil & Fiebing's Neatsfoot Oil Compound and a high pressure hose nozzle. Lastly, a box of misc sheets (>100) of sandpaper and 2 new packages of 1 and 00 steel wool - $4.

Oddball Mid-afternoon estate sale today. Guy had a lot of tools. Managed to get all these: new in the box SK Frankenstein 3/8dr ratchet! Also a full set of like new SK Ratchets and a Wright Tootsie Rool 3/8dr ratchet. Bunch of Bonney & Armstrong thin service wrenches, mostly 1-1/4, 1-1/2 & 1-5/8" , and a huge Bonney 2-1/4". A new Greenlee 735 knockout punch set and some Rigid USA new adjustable pliers. And lastly a HK Porter 990T strap cutter. A good days haul for fighting the crowd!

There was only one worthwhile looking sale in the area for the whole weekend and it started at noon in Novato, CA. It was perfect timing because the commute traffic had cleared and we arrived right when the end of the line was going into the house. I was looking at several tables of HF stuff thinking I wasn’t going to find a thing when my wife spotted several coffee cans full of old looking tools on the floor. This is what we brought home. Unfortunately, the gentleman was very thorough about marking his tools. The first shot is everything, the second Barcalo. Next are the Proto flare nut wrenches followed by the Plomb finds. Thorsen, S-K and Craftsman tools are the last three pictures.

Nice haul Don! As always! :0) Is that a 1/4" S-K ratchet? I just happen to know a guy who is looking to complete a small 1/4" S-K set. IF you were looking to sell or trade. Just sayin' that ratchet looks to be the right vintage. ;0)

It is a nice wartime dark finish 1/4” drive ratchet that even came with a matching 5/16” socket. I actually have a few now and could let go of one. I’ll post a couple pictures on the S-K thread. I’ll probably keep this particular one but I’m sure we can work something out.:)

Went thru that box of sockets, they are all 1/2" drive and almost all 12-pt. Here's what was in there besides the 6-7 asian sockets:

Blackhawk 60056 1-3/4"
Thorsen 618 9/16"
Challenger RD1226 13/16" deep
Proto LA 5345 3/4" deep
Indestro Super 3024 3/4" deep
Wright S160 7/8"
Alloy RU416 1/2"-1/2" swivel adapter
Chrome Alloy 13/16"
Snap-On SW-190 19/32"
Snap-On A-4 1/2"-1/4" adapter
Mac V402 1-1/4"
" V382 1-3/16"
" V362 1-1/8"
" V322 1"
" V302 15/16"
" V182 9/16"
" V142 7/16"

Who made the Alloy and Chrome Alloy? I didn't see those brands in the Alloy Artifacts site.

The remaining 21 sockets are Craftsman (=V=, -V-, -VV-, -G-). Not bad for $3.

If the Chrome Alloy looks like this, S-K made it for their price line, probably Brazil.

Well, I went back to yesterday's estate sale. Some how I missed the Starrett stuff yesterday but then there wasn't much and it wasn't in plain sight. It appears to be a crankshaft distortion gauge. ??? Also, got a vintage Lufkin folding ruler although this isn't the typical folding ruler I grew up with in the 60s. Anyone know what these 18-24" rulers are actually called? I always buy hammer handles when I can find them. Lastly, I usually pass up hand saws. I thought this was a Disston as some on the wall actually were Disstons but regardless I'll try cleaning up this Warranted Superior saw and see if it can be a decent user. Spent $5 on the saw and $4 on the rest.

Sale today, part of it was basically a rerun of the tools from the really good tool estate sale a couple months back. The former owner had lots of old tools and equipment 20s, 30s, 40’s and on. This was a rare second chance to pick through the leftovers. I texted CBacres and he stopped over there as well.

I was able to collect all the unmarked Vanadium Tool Co. wrenches that never made it to finish all those years ago. Two later marked wrenches in there as well. Interesting to see all the flaws in these. I’m thinking this gentleman moved from Ohio with a pile like this! The last time I picked up the nice Vanadium Tool Co ignition wrench set you guys might remember.

The last pic shows a wrench with some light markings.

Bernard Schollhorn pliers collection...
You one-fell-swooped as many unique Bernard pattern Wm. Schollhorn pliers as I have been able to collect in the wild in as many years! HAHA. And I don't have 5 of the 8 in that collection! Nice snag. When you're ready, please post them (along with their model numbers, if any, and patent or patent date markings) on the Schollhorn thread. And if any one of them have the running St. Bernard logo, a current research project, I especially want to know the markings, please! EDIT: This thread, linked here, 3bay.

Will do. I must have turned through about a million of these at estate sales over the years Lugz. They never interested me. I saw the chance to grab the whole “set” and said what the heck. Some look like they’ve seen a lot of use. I did nktice the dog on some.

A nice old variety rivet kit.

attachment.php

Hammers- hard to read the names in the pic, Proto Professional claw hammer, Craftsman long C ball peen, unknown ball peen with the Ford stamp on each side.
attachment.php

Finally, a really nice Billmont ratchet. I wanted to find one of these for a while, now I need the sockets. Not sure how I overlooked this at the initial estate sale, but the rest of the set definitely wasn’t at either.

Also, an old Buffalo estate sale staple (pun intended), the Barcalo tack puller. I used to see these everywhere.

The indicator is a starrett #196 back plunger. That one looks rough. The other gage is one of a few different specialty units Starrett made based on the #196. I believe the 969 is missing all of the other pieces that come with the kit, extensions, a handle, box/case, etc.

Dave,
The box I found the Starrett gauge and the center finder in also had some rods in there. They were covered in rust and dust. I picked a small one up and could read Lufkin on it. I briefly glanced at a couple others thinking I might see Starrett on one but didn't see any other maker names. I may go back tomorrow and have another look at the rods. Seeing this 696 crankshaft gauge on the Starrett site made me think the rods may go with the gauge. We'll see.

Thanks!
Mike

Raining again here, so...

Lots of great scores going on! But 3bay.. Wow, I've never seen one of the staple/nail pullers from Barcalo, the set of rivets is cool, and I've never seen a Ford hammer?

Today’s haul. A couple snap ons, Matco’s, Klein’s, Stanley handyman, craftsman Long C BE coded 1/4” sliding T, and 1/4” drive flex driver, a crescent and Williams adjustable wrench, and a Malco ratcheting wrench..

Oh and some brand called Xcellite... might just toss those... they’re probably junk! :bounce:

Also picked up a bunch of Craftsman =V= and -V- metric sockets to take to the shop....

Hey Guys. This estate sale I've hit the last 2 days has a Long C Craftsman hack saw. If anyone was interested in it I could go back tomorrow and get it for you at cost and you can pay the shipping. Sorry I don't have a pic. It isn't pristine for sure but it also isn't a piece of garbage either. Just a thought.

Hahaha, I can not believe I just smelled the handles... They have a smell, but no worse than the Craftsman ones I have...

Part 2 of today’s running around. Bonney wrench, Handy Andy screwdriver to go with the Handy Andy wrench that I found in my Grampa’s tools, new Britain 5/8” socket, Blackhawk sockets, and a no name 10mm to go in my shop box....

Part 4 of running around today. A bunch of snap on metric sockets, a couple metric Mac wrenches, and the biggest score?!? The craftsman bit driver. I lost mine out of my kit years and years ago. Finally found one to put back in :D

I made it up to the Swap Meet at Portland International Raceway yesterday. I got there just before noon because I had to go to a couple of meetings here in town first, then drive 1-3/4 hours to get there. Of course the local GJ'ers had picked over everything by that time! They did leave me some dregs.

First photo is wrenches. Top to bottom are Hinsdale HD 2 1/2x9/16 DBE, then a series of Barcalo-made wrenches: Wardmaster 7/16x1/2 DBE and 11/16 combo, Barcalo 5/8 and 9/16 combos, then a Craftsman -VA- 1/4 combo to replace the one that walked off from my work truck. Finally, a Proto AN8505-13 thin DOE with offsets. I found it interesting because AN numbers were outmoded by the time "Proto (R) MFD U.S.A." was introduced. It must have been a legacy ID.

Second photo is the Proto AN8505-13.

Third photo is some sockets I bought as a lot. P&C 3/8 dr. 1/2 deep, Long C circle H 11/16, Herbrand Van-Chrome 11/16, Industro/Duro (I think) 9/16 8-point, Blackhawk 6622 11/16, and a SK 40125 25/32 wartime socket. I was interested in the P&C and the 8-point, but put the bundle together. I recognized the SK as cadmium plated, so I put it in the bundle.

Fourth photo is more sockets. Long C 3/8 drive Deep, knurled, BE 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, and 9/16 semi-deep circle H. 15/16 BE and same size circle H in 1/2 drive. 3/8 drive standard 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, and 9/16 BE except the 7/16 is marked CF-14. All these appear to be New Britian sourced. I have stumbled upon some Long C socket stuff lately, and this helps fill in gaps.

Fifth photo are hammer handles and a roller chain puller. I need the puller on occasion, and have been using mechanic's wire to hold things together while I install the master link.

I did get to visit with Rileysan and MrX. I had a good time, and just beat the rainstorm when I left.

I'm not sure if a tool is a good deal if you have no immediate use for it. But this 9pc set of Williams Superrench combinations wrenches in large sizes kept calling to me from Facebook for several weeks.

The nine wrenches are:
1188 1-7/8, 1182 1-11/16, 1180 1-5/8, 1178 1-1/2, 1173 1-1/4, 1172 1-1/8, 1171 1-1/16, 1170 1, 1167 7/8

First listed for $130 then dropped to $95 after a couple of weeks. I bought for $70, they couldn't be in better condition if they were NOS, I don't see any signs of actual use. So now I have really big wrenches!

Nice finds, damon! You never know when you'll need a BFW, but when you do, you do!

I popped into the second day of an estate sale nearby. I think I would've liked whomever owned the basement workshop, as there was lots of fabrication equipment, to include the home-built power hacksaw pictured below.

04f34750992ee3a5c6bd8ab4d0b41683.jpg

I came away with the following goodies for $30 total.

Handfull of Arcair Copperclad gouging rods. I picked these up because I'd never seen them before and a quick Google search seemed to indicate they were good flip fodder. After getting back to my truck and reading up on them some more, I went back inside to look for the Arcair torch head that makes these electrodes usefull. Alas, it was not to be found.

I didn't buy the power hacksaw, but I did grab the spare blades for it. The 14" blades are good quality (Starrett, Simond, Atkins) but too long for my saw. I'm hopeful I can adapt them to my 12" saw bow.

The obligatory DBEs, including some William's Superrenches, an unmarked Buffalo Barcalo and several German-made Elora metrics.

Everything else. I could use some help identifying the machinist fixture. I know it's used for monitoring run out, but I can't find any OEM marking. I'm also not sure how it clamps to a lathe. The other two small items are a Plomb 5279 3/8"-drive 3/4" swivel and a no-name hex-drive universal joint.

As I left I spotted this feature on the house next store. I think this is/was a whole neighborhood of interesting characters.

Mixed Bag Today

Highlights would be Bang & Olafson Turntable for $15 and full propane tank for $12. Sadly, all tools found were junk.

Went to a barn sale advertised as "lots of tools", today was first day I got there 15 min after starting. There were lots of garage supplies- hardware, extension cords, lighting, chemicals, and garden tools. Not much in the way of other tools.

Still managed to find this stuff for $8.

R to L

15' of Campbell chain sign hanging chain

2 pack Hanson red marking crayon

Moose light switch cover plate

3 pair Amerock E3068 vtg cabinet door hinges, chrome

2 swivel key holder (what is the proper term for these?) both marked Bronze Italy

Craftsman USA 1/4 spinner

Last, what appears to be a partial Craftsman wrench rack for DBE or DOE wrenches. The seller didn't know they had it, it was in a cubby above the work bench hidden by other stuff and screwed to wall. Didn't these have a top and say Craftsman? I'm thinking heritage logo.
