Hour drive out to a barn tool sale..... Total waste of time. Had some Mac and a few Snap--on wrenches but I didn't have enough gold bars to pay his price. Even the Craftsman was way overpriced. Well it was a nice ride in country and we got a donut on the way home!

That's the main reason my wife and I go garage sailing. To get out of the house for a nice ride and have lunch out. Making a purchase on something cool is a bonus.

I went directly to an estate sale after getting off work today at 5pm. It had been running since 2pm so I knew it would be well picked over by the local tool hounds. I saw a small operable Atlas 618 lathe with a piece of masking tape marked "SOLD" on it and found out it went for a mere $130!?

Last Thursday I went to a garage sale and found a beat-up crown-top Craftsman box. I couldn't open the lid very far at first, and it would not close because the hinge was bent as well as the top of the lid and the area of the latches. I finally got it open enough to get the tray out and decide there was enough in there to justify the $5.00 asking price.

First photo is the box and lid with the dregs still there.

Second photo is the USA stuff from the box, from top:
Crimper for 1/2" conduit splices
Unused Lenox 32 tooth bimetal hacksaw blade
Craftsman -V- 1/2" breaker bar
Craftsman -VV- combo wrenches, 1/4", 5/16", and 3/8"
Craftsman -V- 3/8 extension
Craftsman WF screwdriver
Master Mechanic screwdriver
Feeler gauge stamped "made in USA"
New Britain NB 45 Ratchet, works well
Powr-Kraft 3/8 center punch
VACO VA-2 angle screwdriver
Lectrolite C-22 11/16" combo
Thorsen 1/4" extension
Proto 1228 7/8" combo
Wright 1118 9/16" combo
Blackhawk MT1043 feeler gauge
Barcalo 6" adjustable
Fairmont USA 1" x 1-1/8" DOE thin
IHC ? 1325 EA DOE
ENDERES 736 1" x 1-1/4" DOE
Ace putty knife
3 new springs
Sockets:
1/4" drive - Craftsman -V- 7/16" deep, 3/8 to 1/4 adapter
3/8 drive - SK 12mm semi-deep, Challenger 7/16 and 9/16 regular
1/2" drive - 7/16" Thorsen 12-pt regular

Third photo is the foreign stuff. The bent-nose needle-nose pliers are made in Spain and pretty decent. Although not marked, I think the groove-joint pliers are from the same source and seem of good quality. The spark plug socket on the bottom is marked Toyota Motor.

I bought another box at this sale, and will post it here later.

The other box at last Thursday's sale was shop-made from galvanized sheet metal, spot welded and very neatly formed. Probably an apprenticeship project, and a very good one.

It contained a large number of files, all tossed in the bottom, with a thick piece of felt on the bottom. Fortunately, the felt was well-soaked with oil, and kept the files from rusting. I suspect that the felt was not an accident, but the number of files far exceeded the intended inventory.

I would have bought the box if it was empty, but for $5.00, I wasn't about to dump out the files!

First photo: Box from above
Second photo: Box from the front
Third photo: Lid open
Fourth photo: contents
Fifth photo: Felt liner

I'll post later to show the file inventory.

There were 84 files in the galvanized box. Most are Nicholson brand.

Photo 1:
1 unknown hex object
3 small files
1 9/32" chainsaw file
3 7/32" chainsaw files
1 rat-tail file 5/16"
1 double end three-corner file Tella____estan Made in Italy
2 9/32" square files
1 small half-round file
2 Nicholson triangular files, 11/16" wide
1 safe edge rectangular file
5 leaf shaped files, 2 ea. 11/16", 1 ea. 3/8", and one flat back 5/8" (and another found in the flat files)

Photo 2:
16 three-corner files of various sizes
29 three corner files, 1/4" on a side, 7-1/2" overall length

Photo 3:
29 flat files of various sizes. Most are fine cut.
1 flat-back leaf file that was hiding from photo #1 ;)

I haven't checked the condition of each file, but most appear to still be sharp and unmolested. I should be able to find a file to fit most any project I have in the future!

Several garage sales previous weekend. Friday started out with two busts, followed by an interesting sale that had nice odds and ends. A $5.00 bill bought all this.

Top left: asian socket that was on one of the Thorsen spinners. Two Boyd 5/8 x 11/16 DBE wrenches.

Next row: Two different styles of Thorsen 1/4 spinners, Thorsen 1/4 extension, Thorsen 1/4 breaker bar, Action 3/8 breaker bar, Powr-Kraft 3/8 breaker bar, Craftsman taper reamer, USMC Shoe (?) multi-tool, P&C 3/8 x 7/16 DBE, Japanese pliers, and a green-handled Diamond adjustable wrench.

Bottom: Proto LA hacksaw, USA cheap calipers, Proto USA cold chisel.

It is interesting to compare the family resemblence of the breaker bars from three different brands!

The monthly flea market has an early entry option for Saturday. Regular sale is on Sunday. I went both days.

Saturday I found the items in photo #1:
Proto LA center punch
No name gouging chisel
Bonney C-29 punch
Brass punch
Japan punch (a flat drill bit modified, is my guess, but I have a use for it)
Air fittings
a jar of set screws

Young Brothers 3/8" number stamps
Craftsman punch set in pouch, seems unused
Wizard #2174 7/16 x 1/2 tappet wrench
Master Mechanic pry bar (for a project I have going)

On Sunday I found the items in photo #2:
Williams #37 DOE
P&C #1202 pliers
Bonney T28 ratchet, with the plug!
pliers for Oetiker hose clamps (again, for a project)
backup alarm (a spare for my equipment)

I picked up this 3/8 drive, Craftsman "V" series set today at an Estate Sale for $6. I don't know if it's a complete set.

I just came across this exact box at an estate sale - in much worse condition; dents, some rust, much paint missing, only a few junky tools, and they still wanted $5 for it.

They still have it.

Today turned out to be quite the interesting rainy day. Answered a Craigslist ad for an antique Koerhing Crane/Dragline/Front Shovel. Made an offer on that which the owner is considering. But he showed me around the property and I did end up buying something. A Smith And Mills Co. Shaper! Will have to go back with my trailer and forklift to pick it up. Ended up shaking hands at $250 for it. There are also some other machine tools there, 2 lathes, and milling machines. Might scoop those up too if the price is right. Another cool thing that was for sale was a International Harvester R 190 4X4 ! It is a complete truck with the plows but needs the right person to restore it. That was my fun excursion on my day off and report back when I go pick the shaper up!

I hit two good size, farm type estate sales. One yesterday, one today. Here is my loot:

Thursday: A pair of Jorgensen clamps for $10, 8" Long C puller, Plomb 5 line socket, wooden box of small brace bits, Dresser Cleco marked bit driver (same as a Snap-on), Long C push drill, P&C #1 phillips and a Rigid. $22 for every thing. The push drill has the owners name engraved, but it was the same as the road the farm was on, so kinda cool.

Todays stop. A pair of spurs, brass switch, sheeve that fits my lathe, dual marked (Proto and P&C) oil filter wrench, Craftsman router bits, Victor torch tips - one new in box, Proto LA #1 phillips, Bluebird battery pliers and a Nambu holster (I hope it fits a Luger) - $45 for all that.
Inside the first aid box was the following:

Yankee bits! and in the red box:

I also picked up the following at a used tool store I hit when in the area.
Willams and P&C breaker bars. I think everyone in the US has read The Lottery by now, but I was in a thrift store and came across this. It is a first edition, second state (no colophon page, edition stated) in a near perfect dust jacket. I would put this one at about $300. As a book guy, pretty happy about that!

Due to noisy construction taking place in front of our house, we went to several small sales we may have otherwise passed on. I’ll just post the pictures in order of the sales we hit. The next to the last shot is all of the Craftsman found today and the last shot is everything.

I want to thank bmwrd0 for the little Snap-on gift that arrived in the mail today that I’ve been looking for seemingly forever. My 9/32” drive set is finally complete! I really appreciate it.

One of quarters we rent has a building site that will be dozed this summer, I went through the old farm shop, picked up a coffee can full of brass and found this little guy? What is this used for. It looks like it might have ratcheted at one point. Didnt want to start a new thread. Thanks for the info

Your a fella not afraid of big stuff! I think shapers are really cool machines. I couldn’t devote the floor space to one. I’d use one too much just so I could watch it. Once over it, I’m thinking it would not get much use.

That is a cool find! Very intriguing. I am assuming the "CHI." is for Chicago. The "B.R.CO." could be Belmont Radio Corporation. That is where they were located. As the name implies, they made radio equipment. They were not a tool OEM. It was probably made for them, perhaps by Bog or someone local. EDIT: What is the hex opening size?

Odd day and getting to my first sale before opening STILL had the "pro" re-sellers, nailing a reed I was after... (three were there making piles and one had already left!)

What I did find was a shooting rest the tape holds extra weight? I
l dump the tape and if it needs weight add it more elegantly...:

attachment.php

Plus a 1000 Kg (2.2 Ton) capacity Lexus jack for the Tent trailer (Leveling) Rope with a clip (Camping) grinder stones for the battery drill Silver for camping, and a couple of small wood handled drivers. 5 bucks all.

attachment.php

The silver polished up well first go, and both are Sterling! so upgrades for the camping set! (most of it is already silver plate, I'm gradually going to Sterling a piece or three at a time...)

attachment.php

Another stop had a lot of stuff cheap and he'd made piles $3 each pile or 1 buck each.

I mixed and matched and he gave these all top me for $3! it was actually a pretty good way to go for a pricing approch!

Aluminum Pantograph (Taiwan) A piece of safety gear for scaffolding? Only rated 300 Lbs (the bar is aluminium), craftsman Orange handled Torx, Fiskars scissors, and a set of grabber arms.

attachment.php

3 stops in this pile: Cents .50 for the shower head (camp gear...) $2 for the mini Air pump, $5 for the rest including Plvmb, DBE, a couple of Thorsen, a wright adn Wqalden socket, and a home or shop brew clamp (possibly camping) 9 paint sticks, and the brass rod.

attachment.php

And last but not least, a mostly pre WWII stamp collection from Freecycle. (Bag was marked "Mom's stamp collection" and "Grandma's Stamp Collection", I was told it came from an 88 YO woman) Both US and world, adn the old album is copyrighted 1031!

Evening folks, went a bit further afield today as I took a mate down to the "Makers Central" show at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham (UK), about 100 miles from Leeds

DSC_1481.jpg

There were quite a few USA and EU Youtube makers present:
sketch-1557600319373.jpg

Along with all the shiny new tool manufacturers (Triton, Rockler, Record, etc.) and techniques on display there were a couple of 2nd hand tool sellers also. No "You *****" deals in the following but just nice pieces I "had to have"

DSC_1489.jpg

> Clamp on HOBBIES vice with a a mini anvil at the back and a patent/copyright reg date of 9-3-14
> Tiny hand vice - No markings
>And a pocket knife...which was the best of the pickings..
DSC_1491.jpg
...MOD Broadarrow marked and date stamped 1940! The tip of the knife may have been snapped off but still a lovely piece. Can't decide if I'm going to round off the tip like a pruning knife or keep a similar angle but straighter like some Japanese blade styles
20190511_202658-COLLAGE.jpg
Made by BODGERS of Sheffield....love that company name!
But anyone familiar with the other stamps on the blade?

Finally with all these YouTube content creators around I broke my own rules and asked for a selfie with these two!

sketch-1557600054843.jpg

Mr Jimmy Diresta and Mr Eric "HandtoolRescue"
The first has inspired me to make some wierd and brilliant things
The second has, as I told him, led to a significant decline in lung performance due to cleaning rust off old tools:lol_hitti
.... Oh don't worry GarageJournal and the posters on this thread are similarly to blame :bounce:

Mrs LesserSon & I headed out this morning to the Lower Lehigh Lions Club spring flea market at Macungie Memorial Park - an event that was RAINED OUT TWICE last year. Picked up a number of fun things.
I did not buy the Dunlap table saw for $2. If I had more arms, I would have, because it would look great with my Dunlap wood lathe. But I was fully laden and far from my car, and I knew I was going to buy some things from Mick later at the Quakertown flea market. (He’s still got more - will I ever get back to Jakes flea market? Or Blue Ridge flea market?
Well, I did my shopping at Q-town, and was heading to the car when Mrs LS texted me a photo that spun me around. “Where are you?” I responded. She called me back “my battery is at 1%,” OMG tell me before it shuts down! Phew! I marched the length of the market, eyes straight ahead (it was huge today - even the regulars had about three times their normal merchandise out)...and clapped eyes on a Bonney Ajax No32 3” machinist vise. “$10,” says the vendor (whom I’ve bought from before). “Sold!” says I, not even examining it and pulling a wad of crumpled 5s out of my pocket - all I have left. “Guess I should have said twenty,” he jokes. But no, the vise is mine, and I don’t even mind when I see there’s a chunk out of the static jaw. TWO Bonney vises in one day - wow.
The M43 entrenching tool is stamped US/Wood/1945. Guy insisted it had been his uncle's so I met him halfway on his price, after I got the aluminum nut to break free. The red socket organizer is imported from China - so it’s got to be good, right? And the little paperboard box has a multi-use glass-cutter / blade sharpener, which I’ve seen before, but this one has the instructions!

How common are Vlchek flying-V logo Phillips screwdrivers? This one has had a sad attempt at regrinding the tip, but it seems a better job might salvage the day.
I passed up a tiny “perfect handle”-type screwdriver because I just could not read the mfgr stamp.
And spotted but did not buy this EASCO-branded hacksaw...because I have an identical Bonney-branded one.
...and the Five Star Tool instructions...
