Can anyone help with this,

I have a reed 104 1/2R I just picked up.

After disassembling it for cleaning and oiling for use I discovered the nut that holds the handle in is split in two.

Not sure where to go from here with it.

Any help would be appreciated

Just means you're lucky enough to pick up a great Reed vise. Most of us made the same mistake. Mine was last year. Congrats on that Reed!

I’m restoring a Wilton C1 and couldn’t wait to spray on my custom order Verde green that I had to buy a six pack of. To my amazement it seems really green to me. I switched over to light Blue for the second coat and I like it better but I wish it was a shade darker.

My most challenging restoration yet. Parker 384-1/2 vise. Seller posted one pic and had no details, except for the $50 asking price. Well, the dynamic jaw has been repaired as seen in one of the pics (decent repair I think?), and it had been discarded and left in the dirt to rot for who knows how long. One side was very rusty, but it really cleaned up well.

Initially I said I didn't want it, but then after looking through a few other items offered $10. The swivel pin isn't original and I am hoping to source a new one, and I will keep my eye out for a replacement dynamic jaw assembly.

Ohh the horror.

Mostly cleaned up. See all the debris on the workbench. That is about 1/2 of what came off the vise.

It swivels, but was frozen until I put the hammer and punch to work to free the pin and swivel jaw. She was rusty.

Hi Cajun, Welcome to the sickness!

I'm not familiar with your particular brand, but the script makes me thing 30's 40's.

Its an exposed screw "homeowners" vise, fairly light duty, but some are more heavy that others. I'd guess its < 15 lbs total weight? maybe 4" jaws? compared to a machinists vise, and 4-5X that weight for a 4"...

Cleanup for that could be wire wheel to bare metal, a dunk in Simple green (full strength) to remove the gunk and old paint, or you could do the same with an electrolysis tank - lots of options!

What do you have available is a key question here...

Refinish - again lots of options paint, BLO, other options...

What do you want as a finished product?

Just keep in mind for a vise like that it mostly a labor of love. exposed screw vises are not generally highly valuable on resale (with a few exceptions)

There is one for $191.25.---One for $30.00.---One for $75.00.---And one that says Champion Blower & Forge Co., which may be the same Co. that made

I explained poorly. What I meant was to replace the pin with a longer one, insert into hole and then use a hammer to knock the now long pin down towards the nut to affix it in place to remove the slop. Picture a bent nail in a board...

Another way to close the gap is with a spacer cut in the shape of the bottom of the nut.

Hope everyone had a nice 4th.

I picked up this Parker 371 1/2 a couple days ago. Very clean and came with a nice little stand. I really enjoy these swivel jaw vises. Pin is, as expected, stuck, but doesn’t appear to be welded.

After seeing all these awesome restores I couldn’t just live with the way this reed looked.

So, a little time,some paint and a wire wheel, here we are

Nice teeth on that thing Mslund.---Nice refurb too.---I kind of like the wire wheel look.---Most of mine are wire wheeled and it leaves a less shinier finish on the metal than the full polished look.---Looks more usable than a show piece.---But who am I kidding, I like every way these GJ fellows are breathing new life into these old relics.

An interesting six page ad for vises came up on eBay a couple of days ago. The pages are from a Simmons Hardware Company catalog from 1890. I purchased the sheets because I thought it would be a great piece of Americana to own. I thought it would be best to scan and share with the board.

Significantly better. When you scan, ensure you turn up the DPI and add a click or two of color saturation and it should really make'm pop.

Awesome that you and others (like Flepperjeppernnsnesmeseoen) do this for us!
