Slim pickings for 2 estate sales this AM. Craftsman oiler, the top wrench is marked FW Macke and Co Kokomo IND USA. The ignition set appears to be unmarked other than fractional sizes. The adjustable wrench is marked but can't make it out. Maybe after a date with Evaporust. It's unique in that the head angle is adjustable. 22 bucks spent. Hoping for better luck tomorrow. It's blistering hot here in the SE and a lot of flea vendors are staying home.

I normally don't buy antique or vintage shears, but I couldn't pass up these with a curving cut. They are very well made (Herm. Joest & Co. Solingen (Germany))(see Pic 2), with a clean, sharp edge, and a very intriguing logo (see Pic 3). A horsewhip coiled around what appears to be either some kind of beaker with a stopper, or a clasp of some kind (also cavalry related?), or perhaps early ordnance, and what appears to be a date (2 - 16") of February 1916, during WWI.

Any ideas on that logo?

I did find a photo of an early Bakelite-handled straight razor from the same maker with a different logo - a hybrid stork and turtle creature (see Pic 4). European blade makers like to use different logos for different types of blades and steel, almost like branding, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I also found an early annual Patent Bulletin from 1909 with a reference to the maker. (See Pic 5.)

Few small things today at a flea market. It was insanely hot so I'm sure there was some stuff I missed. I found the Handyboy on the 2nd sweep.

Armstrong no. 3 c-clamp, 6". This is one of the good heavy duty type. The main screw is seized but otherwise in ok shape. I figured for $5, not much of a gamble.

old Blue Point long tappet wrench with cool forged in logo. No. XL-167, 1/2 wrench almost 14" long. Looks like a bend was added. I paid $2 because I'd never seen one.

Diamond Tool & Horseshoe Diamalloy DH-18 "Handyboy" multi-tool. Made in USA. Unused. Been after one for a while, and not having to resort to eBay or their high prices = priceless. I paid $20.

Finally, a copy of Stephen King's Skeleton Crew to replace a missing copy I loaned out and was never returned. Only $1 for hardback, not bad.

Hit three sales today, all looked good on paper, all were just OK:

Proto MFD 3/4 T-bar, two Snap-on sockets, Pennens ratchet, battery terminal wrench, Hinsdale socket and a vintage box of .30/30 - $8.50

2HP Baldor motor. I don't have any use for it, but I couldn't let it sit there at that price -$10

I found this stuff in the free bin at a Tahoe garage sale this morning. After checking battery prices, free may have been too expensive.

I only look at used battery-powered tools that use a battery I already have. Batteries are so expensive that it does not make sense to mix types.

Get a Ryobi tool that comes with the lithium battery and charger and add to this kit like a saw, a nailer or other drill.

It was starting to look like another skunk for me this morning but my last stop produced decently enough :

2019-07-06_09-20-13 by Phil Poirier, on Flickr

Another Beach toolbox for my small collection, then going clockwise :
Mastercraft 3/8 drive SAE set with extra set of matching sockets on a rail
6 Craftsman -G- USA sockets with 1 -G- extension and one -G- adapter
12 Craftsman -V- USA sockets
9 Craftsman -VV- USA sockets
4 Gray Canada sockets
5 Herbrand Canada sockets
Gray Canada 6 piece DOE set with holder
Crestoloy 4" adjustable (been looking a long time for a brand name 4")
Oh, and the Bondhus 9-piece set too.

Everything other than the Mastercraft box and extra sockets is metric, quite pleased with that.

Sprayed the clamp with pb, let it sit about 1 hr or so standing up so the pb would go into threads. With minimum effort it came loose. Worked open and closed about 6x and now this clamp is smooth as silk.

I like these Armstrong clamps.

Another low volume day but enjoyed getting the three wrench racks for 20 bucks. Another 2 bucks netted the Proto LA combo for the Rotomat (only 1 million pieces to go!), a little Bonney flange wrench and a Dunlap driver. Also picked up a cross bar for a 1/2" hinge handle that the seller gave to me as she didn't know what it was.

Great price on the oilers. A lot of sellers around me think those things are lined with gold.

Didn't bring him a lot but I like picking up weirdos so today was a good day.

Elgin tap set that appears to be complete, below it is marked Faskin MFG Co. NY, next is marked UNIVERSAL METAL PROD LA CALIF, a Moore Drop Forging wrench and a Husky rat. The stuff on the left is all Craftsman.

IMG_4261.jpg

Nice finds, is that padlock Craftsman Crown logo?

Some interesting finds from the flea market today.
Couple cans of R12,
NIB Panavise,
Grand Quikset vise (already have 2, but couldn't leave it behind),
Stanley bevel gauge, appears to be new
box of stick on wheel weights
Another Baxter adjustable - soaking in Evaporust as we speak
32-35 Ford king pin set
cool vintage wheel lock set
Craftsman crown scriber set
miter gauge hold down, pretty sure it's Craftsman
Ridgid 1/4" tubing bender
Proto 6" adjustable and 1/8" hex bit socket
Wiha magnetizer/demagnetizer, think it's my first Wiha tool
Cool vintage giant vacuum gauge
slitting saw arbor

Not bad considering how few vendors there were, suspect a lot stayed away because we were predicted to get some rain showers at some point, didn't arrive till late afternoon.

I love the Craftsman Crown scriber in in the original package!

I was out driving around, and noticed a local artist was having an estate sale, so I decided to swing in. And I am happy I did!

Pair of Starrett hermaphrodite dividers, some wooden boxes, a Lufkin boxwood rule, and the Goodell Prate tin. Which, as you can see has the original markings although they are fading. And on the inside:

Sometimes you just have to buy it and research it later.... Picked up a PortaShop set for $15 today. It had been stored somewhere that it picked up a bit of surface mold {yuck} but it cleaned right up. This thing is the size of a sewing machine case and can be used as a table saw, router, drill, router table, sanding disc, grinder, drill press. About 5000 were made in the early 60s and as you would expect, there have been a couple sightings on here before.

I have some interesting research ahead of me. As you can see in the pictures, I do not know how to put the pieces in the box. I am pretty sure that it is all there.

Edit - some background from a 2013 post http://www.shiawasseehistory.com/portashop.html

Duddly, I must have missed the earlier posts, but that thing is cool!!!

Did the TS have a fence for it?

I never got out Thursday (No sales worth going to) and we were out of town in a place with even fewer sales yesterday and today... (I just got back an hour or or so ago)

Question for Info Officer Lugz!

I picked this box up some time back,

attachment.php

its for "small arms Ammunition" in red on the back, and also has these other markings on the front:

Bullseye?

attachment.php

cryptic numbers?

attachment.php

The back detail:

attachment.php

The reason I'm interested is others asked me what the source might be after I showed my plan for its future:

attachment.php

It only works on the 2 earliest models of the Coleman 242, and possibly the same vintage 243, (or similar height lanterns)

Hermaphrodite refers to an animal that as both sets (or neither set) of ****** organs/characteristics. IE an animal that can reproduce individually. Here you can see this set of dividers has both straight and curved legs, in other words both types.

I am WAY behind in posting my finds. This is from yesterday, $20 for everything at an estate sale.

Pic 1: In the upper left is 5 pieces of lead, 28 pounds. The rest of the stuff is consumables, always need that stuff!

Pic 2: A few weeks ago I found a TRW wrench roll with most of the wrenches, now I find a 3/8" drive socket set. It was missing pieces including the ratchet but as I was looking in various places I found the missing pieces and picked it up. The padlock on the right of it is a Slaymaker, then a single Snap On socket and above that is a small pile of Wizard. Lower right is the Craftsman and Sears stuff, then a pair of Channelock pliers , Blackhawk and Husky socket and a couple of wire brushes. After I took the picture I realized one was a Dunlap, rarely do you see a wire brush last 50 years plus!

I've been busy lately, and no good sales have been found. I did get to the Restore a couple of weeks ago, and it was Barcalo Day there! $8.00 bought these.

From the top:
Challenger 1/2" combo for a farm tool box.
Long C DOE 25/32x7/8
Barcalo DOE's
19/32x11/16
25/32x7/8
Barcalo Combo 3/4
Barcalo Combo 9/16
Crescent Combo 7/16 (made by Barcalo)
Williams B52 Ratchet

Notice that the etched markings on the Barcalo 3/4 combo are almost completely unreadable. Must have seen a lot of abrasion, but it only polished the chrome.

Also notice the difference in the thickness of the box end on the three Barcalo-made combos. I wonder if there was a change in materials or just made the Crescent thicker to minimize warranty claims?

I propped up the ratchet with the 3/4 combo. It is only in the photo for that reason.

I have been picking up cheap Tonka toy trucks for an acquaintance that collects them. The other day he handed me this Barcalo S-shaped 6" adjustable.

The other estate sale I went to Friday, spent $19.75. The guy was a Bell South linesman but most of the hand tools were already gone.

Pic 1: Linesman's belt with Bell System pouch.

Pic 2, 3, 4: Single bit Mann Axe on left and Craftsman Crown logo edger. Notice the huge amount of black tape on the handle of the axe, I figured it covered up major damage. Imsgine my surprise when I peeled it off and uncovered this in pic 4!

Pic 5: 3/8" NPT tap I needed since mine disappeared, USA made wire brush, Sears paintbrush and a Craftsman Crown logo sprinkler.

Pic 6: Mason jars and consumables. One of the Mason jars has the Liberty bell on it and 1776-1976 lettering. Already 43 years old! Cheap food at estates ales keeps me fed sometimes, these weren't even expired!

Pic 7. Closeup of the rigger's belt with a cool elephant climbing a pole logo.

A friend of mine went to visit his son out of town. He picked this up for me from his sons neighbor who was having a yard sale. $20.

I asked him if I owed him $20 and he said no.

Sweet. Free bench grinder! I have not yet plugged it in to see if it works or not. I’ve been way way too busy to spend 2 minutes to plug it in Hahahaha :shocking:

Blue bolt *****, as usual. Love the protected Crowntop logo.

Nothing close to me except a man with a bird. SWMBO and I may go look at it later today.

Was waiting in a slow drive through prescription pick up line and checking Facebook Marketplace on my phone. These Snap On pry bars had just popped up and I sent him a message, he quickly responded and I picked them up on the way home. $30, I'll probably give the broken one to one of my professional mechanic buddies who deals with the Snap On truck.

Duddly, I must have missed the earlier posts, but that thing is cool!!!

Did the TS have a fence for it?

pic 1 - yes it does. The rip fence also serves a a fence in shaper mode... and I am learning to pack it away better. Still looking for a more complete manual on the web.

pic 2 - $3 group - some barcalo wrenches and a pressed steel set of LODI pliers with the 1894 and updated 1900 patents

pic 3 - Stanley No 8 (I think) rule. I like that the markings were still good.

pic 4 - odd BICO adjustable pliers - I don't think the nut is original but you need to remove it to adjust them. Because I don't think the square nut is original I am having trouble dating them or finding much. I suspect they are 1950s or later.

pic 5 - NEVERSLIP wrench - when I looked up the patent it said it was meant for fastening Horseshoe Calks ??? - this was new to me and they are little studs added to horseshoes for traction.... WAIT A MINUTE!!!

So I went back to check on some of my Diamond Calk Horseshoe Company tools. per Wikipedia " Initially manufacturing horseshoes with a special type of calk to improve the animals' foothold on slippery surfaces, the company successfully adapted to the development of motorised transport for the masses and produced a range of adjustable wrenches and pliers from the 1920s" You have to love a company that can adapt when the rug is pulled out from under them! Makes me like the Diamond Calk stuff even more!
