I hope someday when I find my Monarch it's in half as nice of condition as yours. The black and gold looks great too!

Found some time away from the never ending utility trailer project to finish off my 518 Prentiss. Decided to finish it in the same color scheme as it's father - my user Prentiss 56.
Two coats of epoxy primer as usual then rustoleum's "anodized bronze" aka murky brown.

Thought the color hideous at first but now I quite like it.

Here's son and father, 56 and 518.

Funny how much more massive the meatball is on the Dad.

Your friend had an Eron 115 that nobody bought so you got it free?:headscrat
What was the price tag on it at the sale?

Is was $40 at the sale. I did not weight it but that is probably about $1 per pound. But I picked it up for free. Very nice guy, but he was moving to an assisted living apartment and could only bring so much.

I was negotiating on another vise yesterday when the seller sends me this pic. I was hoping that it was a copy and that it was for sale.

If it was a copy i was hoping maybe $2,000...BUT this one is an original...$25,000 plus in value. Oh well, at least I had hope for a little while.

Well its done. Monarch 3" swivel base. Basically unused condition. It is unusual that this is stamped on the jaw rowers and the spindle nose. Looks like 'Patented June 6' Beautifully machined.

Weight 16 lbs.

Ive ALWAYS wanted to do one of these

Nice vise and great work! Is that the same Monarch company that made excellent lathes also?

Won’t get to work on this stand for awhile, so I braved the near 100 degree heat to get the last of the top plate holes drilled and tapped.

Vise, how do you brave 100 degree heat and get anything done?---I can't get anything done for having to constantly shake sweat off my glasses.---It's hard to see around those sweat drops.---You must be a young man what don't need glasses yet.---Count your blessings.

Joe - the Monarch looks fantastic. Not clear from your post what happened with the Bugatti. Did he quote you $25k for it?

Ken - Love that piece! And I agree, the color is perfect.

Longhorn - Thanks for the kind words. Haven’t weighed it yet, but my guess is the stand itself weighs 200+ lbs.

VA - the goggle fogging wasnt the problem. The back breaker was leaning over to drill and tap those holes. The dehydration cramping wasn’t so pleasant either.

WOW!
Thanks for posting that ultimate vise ****.
We all need to know how to recognize the copies vs. originals. Any tips? Just taking the seller’s word for it doesn’t sound like a good idea! :)

Thanks Vise!

Regarding the Bugatti, I think someone would have to be mentally deranged to pay $25K for that.

That’s what a lot of people said not long ago when they saw baby bullets selling for $200

(Here’s a link to a GJ thread about Bugatti vises from 5 years ago.)
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=236895

This baby bullet brought $405 recently on eBay and it doesn’t even have the swivel base!

Not a vise, but I remember back when I was a student in Berkeley, 1971, I saw a 300SL Gullwing parked at the curb with a for sale sign in the window. $10,000. I didn’t even have $1000 at the time. But that car stuck in my mind. Think of what I could get for it now!

A few love taps with the hammer and I got the Dropfo apart. Base had some rust seizing it.

The replacement dynamic jaw pad is plywood. I'm guessing original metal pad on the static jaw, and it looks like it was caulked then wrapped in duct tape (you can see duct tape marks in caulk) to form it in place, although the single original screw is present. Who knows what surprise (s) are hidden under there.

This thing is FILTHY

It's also neat how it works. When you tighten the vise it draws the tapered nut in a taper inside the vise body. This forces the inner part of the vise body to go outwards against the swivel base at the saw cut, locking it. And the small screw for independent swivel lock goes to another tapped hole in the bottom of the nut, also drawing it into the taper and thus locking the swivel base.

Also it appears the spindle is retained by a dowel pressed into the dyamic under the "keystone". Inside, I'm not sure what is going on. It looks like it's crimped together.

The slide tube is 3/8" thick!

A punch and a small hammer will take that pin out without any difficulty. Mine came out easily.

Yes, but the Bugatti reminds me of one of those "custom" cars with the 22 inch chrome wheels and air bag suspension and 500W stereo.
Plus we all have a shop full of vises which will clamp harder. Surprised they didn't gold plate it and encrust it with diamonds.

Got lucky at an industrial plant auction (gonna be an EPA superfund site) last week and went to unbolt some of the stuff today. The interesting items for folks on this thread: Columbian 204 1/2 M2; a Parker 107; a Wilton 600 (minus the base) and a Starrett 926. All filthy but in good shape :)

Bob, man those are some nice scores! Interesting that Starrett has an extra mounting ear on the back of the static jaw for bolting down without a swivel base. I've never noticed one like that before. Very cool!

Jeez, Bob between you and Smitty, a good 40% of the available vises in the USA are being sucked up. Nice score!

Free is always good. But that story raises the question,,, which vise would each of us take along to an assisted living facility?

Being realistic, and knowing you NEEDED assisted living, A Zylis, and a Baby bullet. - 'cause you ant working on anything much heavier/ bigger...

Maybe that's the answer; guys going into assisted living are buying all the Baby bullets! :see:

Joe, at least you got to SED the Bug!

I suppose I would have to be sensible and take my Parker 3-1/2" double swivel.

Finally joined the club.

Met up with Shiftless and bought a nice little Wilton 1745 from him. I’m pumped. My garage won’t be SnapOn centric so I’m going to paint it.

Not a great pic but here she is.

Eight weeks ago I was rearranging my collection when I grabbed a Wilton 600 off of the bench and put it on the ground. Needless to say my back hasn’t been the same since. I’ve been looking at lift trucks but they are just way too expensive. I had never heard of this brand until I popped up on the board crazy cheap. And by crazy cheap I mean $1809e3a5121e25e424def6ee512f16b15cc.jpg

That’s a great addition to your shop equipment. All of us, no matter what the age group, must be careful of our backs.

Bob:
Great score!

Poppakap:
Nice meeting you and I’m glad you're happy with your 1745. Please post pics of it when you finish painting. It left a hole on my shelf but I’ve already filled that up.

Look for a Wesco Hydraulic die cart. I use the 2 wheeled cart in my shop every day. Can lift 750 lbs. I wrangle stuff all the time with mine. Just assume you will need to rebuild the hydraulic ram. They pop up all the time. I love lowering it on mycars bumper and loading or unloading vises and anvils.

I pd 150 for mine and pd 150 to rebuild the hydraulic ram

Thanks for the heads up. This one only has a 200lb lifting capacity but I can put it in the back of my truck with one hand. This would be great to take on the road for lg vise buys. I can crank this up to tailgate height and just push the vise in.

Smitty - Any damage to the vise? I’ve had some close calls as recently as this weekend and I remember TriJeff sacrificed his body to save his Prentiss 98.

In any event, that’s a nice, portable solution. I ended up buying a lift cart with a 1,000 lb capacity. Downside is that it’s heavy (150lbs) and the lowest it goes is 8 inches off the ground. Also have a 1 ton engine hoist that I’ll be using move things around soon.

Smitty, Shift, Pghjkb, Fierljeppen, productbob, Vise...thanks for kind words. I didn't need or want this vise but it was too interesting to pass up.

I gifted it to my dad, who has a new to him work bench in need of a vise. He prefers fixed base, and I know the swivel jaw will get him some bragging rights among his buddies. He will give it a good home.

If I had a gun to my head I'd go with 625 as well. This is only my 2nd Hollands (I should say 2nd I've bought, since it's my dad's now), the lettering "looks" old to me. Guesses on age?

Tell your dad that his Hollands vise no. 625 is pre-World War I for sure. Most likely somewhere from (1908-1916). I found the -3- different models with catalog dates to get that information. Be sure to let him know how rare his vise is also. That's the 1st one of that model I've seen.

I think it's really cool that you got your dad interested in vise collecting.

Lol
The vise came out unscathed however my lower back did the Rice Krispy’s jingle.

Only a madman would throw himself under a Prentiss 98

Product, you lucky dog, a 926 is on my must have list.---Awsome score.

Let me check VA, I may have one, although I think it might be a 924.......not sure. PO attempted to weld the rotating base but I had taken it apart and begun the resto but lost interest. It's yours if you want to come get it. I'll let you know 4 or 6....
