Yeah, I’ve drooled over that pic before. My first thought is that they must not have earthquakes there.

This collection belongs to one Mr. Fred Moore of Mountainair New Mexico. He has over 1400 anvils!

No earthquakes there but NASA satellite measurements are showing that Mountainair area is sinking into ground at rate of 5 inches per year :lol_hitti

Found this today. I saw an add for an estate sale and I thought I saw a mini post vise in a pic but turned out to be an old stillson wrench. Anyway, found this instead. You guys know if it’s a small/portable blacksmith vise?

Thanks Gman and Vise.
This is my first Prentiss jewelers vise, I was pretty excited to get it.

It's modeled after a BS post vise, but its jeweler's vise sized...

Removed the nut on the Parker 978 (it’s sitting on a gallon of paint in the pic below). This was the last disassembly step, so it allowed me to finally start cleaning the vise. Decided to take it down to bare metal and started with the dynamic slide and the swivel base today (before and after pics below). Also cleaned up the hardware; the collar appears to be copper?

Tomorrow I hope to clean up the handle and static jaw, then apply first coat of metal oil. Getting closer to mourning it.

Great job, it is coming along very well. Keep up the good work

Honestly even with a gallon paint can as a reference the photos don’t do justice to the massive size of the 978, in fact the vise parts make the can look like a pop can but still there is nothing like seeing an 8” vise up close.

Spent some time with my dad today.
He found this Parker no. 39 vise for cheap because it's seized. Collar and jaws intact, although it still needs some help. 3-3/4" jaws.

Since I had to find something vise related...we stopped by a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, and I spotted these. 4 new in box pairs of (guessing) pipe jaws for an exposed screw homeowner-type vise. For $1/each, figured why not. Boxes have no markings, each jaw is marked 4-1041-1. They are 2-5/8" tall and 1-3/4" wide. Anyone have any ideas what they're for?

Holy ****! The pipe jaws are for a Versa-Vise!!
I guess not that surprising, bought them at the Re-Store in Wooster Ohio not far from Will-burt in Orrville where they were originally made.

Hi - I recently picked up this Rock Island quick-release wood vise and can't figure out what the two fixed pipe/rod guides are supposed to do. Any thoughts? First post, so I apologize if this has already been resolved elsewhere.

Talked to my dad on the phone today and sent him the pictures of the old Reed I had fixed up from his old job. He walked out to the garage to get the information off the vise he's had forever. He said it was Prentiss and the model looked liked 127. It has the through bench style swivel mount and slip in pipe jaws, but he's been missing one of the jaws lately. Does that model number sound right? Google searches didn't come up with anything. His 80 year old eyes struggle lately to see clearly of something isn't well lit.

I went to pick up a vise I purchased on eBay and asked the seller if he had any other vises for sale. Here’s a Wilton 920P it has 2” jaws and weighs 4.5 lbs. The vise has quite a bit of the original paint still on it and seems to be gently used. The stamp on the bottom reads 5/478e8cd9f3b8262e9cdacf10b116d8c218.jpg30f79d6890f5cfee93ed7e29272d1d02.jpg3f7f5273d45f178647cd7b67da37a5b4.jpgb00eefb50ebc864d58fdac4b57166bee.jpg16455d431628f9971e90cc6eb934007b.jpg

Nice Smitty. Had similar fortune a week ago when I went to pick up a Tradesman 1750 from CL and he also had a Wilton 825. All for under one bill. Always pays to ask!

Snap
Exposed screw vises are meant for light duty work at home. As long as the vise is not pushed beyond the limit that it was designed for (in this case light work) it will hold up ok.

Little giant is not a bad brand however there are many other more popular brands that arguably are of higher quality.

Ps
With a handle name like snapon, you need a snapon (Wilton) tradesman vise :bounce:

Great score on the early baby bullet

Thanks Gman, it made my day to find that vise. Here’s where the story takes a strange twist. The oldest Wilton that I own is this 45S and then I got the bullet. I’ll let the pic’s tell the story from here.4aa393d22ad8051b718b051cef1c8641.jpgc7feae90560873812f206f7bdf27362f.jpge28d272e8f8dcabbd00542b73fc4be64.jpg

Not as Spectacular as some of the other recent finds you guys have had, (well done!) but I'm pretty happy with a RI 574 (with the Brinkman's tag) for ten bucks, even if it is missing the swivel base!

Outlaw, do you work on them, kinda of get them in shape or stick them in storage. This one needs a little care and it should be in good shape for work.

Nice scoop on the 574 Outlaw. Can’t beat that price.

Made some progress cleaning up the 978 today. Wire wheeled the static jaw down to bare metal, but there’s some stubborn paint in the crevices at the bottom. I’m soaking in undiluted Simple Green over night. Also wire wheeled the handle, which came out nice, and cleaned up the nut and brake assembly. Interesting that the tips of the brake have brass or bronze forged into the cast iron (see pic). Tomorrow I hope to apply the first coat of oil.

Vises, that bronze or Brass pads are a repair. It is important that the radial threaded block that rises with the lock down spreads the brake pads has to be close fitting, there is not much of a rise to engage the brake.

Big vise. How does the jaws fit, did Joe fit the jaws?

KMS - you could be right, but I think the brass or bronze on the brake is original. It is machined just like the rest of the brake and looks to be just a cap on the end to prevent wear against the brass wedge lock. See pics.
