Man I wish, been really Laboring in the yard and will be for the balance of the weekend. Paint may actually get completed but I got some serious time I need to put in polishing handles and pipe jaws. I basically get an hour at a time at best, these things take me a long time, this one in particular because it's for my dad.

Yep Smitty, I swore off eBay with exception.---Some one buys the vise for me.---This was my original post.

Check out this link.---Virginia is not listed but they are already charging me tax on purchases.---Amazon is charging tax in all 50 states already.---Big brother has been pushing online stores to start charging tax for several years but are now increasing the pleasure.---''WHAT THE MARKET WILL BEAR", ain't what I'll bear.---I'm not gonna fill pot-holes in California or anything else a bankrupt state want's me to help pay for.---The only time I'll purchase from eBay now is if I happen on a steal that no one has spotted yet or if someone gives me a fat eBay gift card.

Now go back and read what I highlighted above.---I was wondering if anyone would catch that.

Why does this mis-information keep getting passed around. This is the "amazon tax". It's not because of "big brother", amazon or eBay, it's because of the state's passing laws to make up income for lost taxes on out of state sales. You only pay tax to your home state, not to others. Those of us that live in states with no sales tax still don't pay that sales tax.

Here's a little Stanley Victor #772 I got off of eBay WITH A BIRTHDAY GIFT CARD, about a month ago.---The description didn't say whether it was a Sweetheart or Victor, so I was gambling it was a Sweetheart.---All it said was, "OLD USED VINTAGE STANLEY TOOLS RARE SMALL BENCH MOUNT VISE VICTOR NO. 744. For sale - Exceptional - 6 inches in length.''---They didn't even get the # right.---But it is in good condition and all the parts were there.---Didn't even have to make retainer clips for it KMS.:)

va, great news, those little buggers are a handful to make. I have about a dozen more small clamp-ons that after I retire I will make some more Stanley's with the Parker swivel bases.

Yeah, I caught it the first time, actually I didn’t think they provided a font that big to type with here. There are only three things that are inevitable in life, death, taxes and EBay fees.

Very nice va. I think the one I'm getting is nice but not as nice as yours. It looks to have some chips in the jaws. The seller said complete but it might be missing the disc washer between the clamp knob and swivel base. Oh well. I have a very nice Stanley Rule & Level 743 clamp-on that is complete and if this is a R&L, they will look great next to one another.

VA, you missed the point of the article:

You should only be paying YOUR states sales tax. Period. if anyone charges you more, they should be called on it.

Those taxes collected GO TO YOUR STATE not the seller's state.

That is what we have tried to tell you...

The Morality/Legally? that's a different argument...

Outlaw, have you ever tried to get a strait answer out of eBay?---You ask them a question and they give you the old verbal equivalent of Jarabe Tapatío,/Mexican Hat Dance.---By the time the dance is over, you are exhausted and you can't even remember what the question was.---And for them it's Mission Completed.---Morality/Legally, that's grounds enough for me.---On them:monkey_pi

This is absolutely correct. I had the issue earlier in the year with a California item on ebay I was charged tax on. Strictly the seller who thought he had to collect CA tax on sales. He reimbursed me when I sent him the, surprisingly easy to find, article of taxation on out of state sales codes.

Again, if you don't like paying sales tax, it's the fault of the state you live in. Many states jumped on the chance to charge out of state sales as a money grab for corrupt and mismanaged local governments. I don't pay any tax on anything I buy locally or online ever. Washington state even has an agreement with Oregon to not charge tax on OR residents when we make purchases there as long as an ID is shown and a quick form filled out. I keep purchases to only necessity when travelling across the country. I'd rather spend that money on travelling abroad.

2 questions Jmhinkle.

(1) Where do you find the article for (out of state taxation exemptions).

(2) Will this article have to be submitted to every seller of every transaction one makes on eBay and Amazon and the like, as it appears they are going to exact these taxes on every transaction?

Also, I have no qualms about paying my states taxes as they go to benefit me personally in a lot of ways.---Now some of the ways my local government pisses away $ upsets me quite a bit.---I guess it's because I can more clearly see where and how it's being pissed away.:headshake

This old Wilton 945 barely had any of the original paint left so it was a good candidate for a cleaning. The vise has been well used over the years but it in pretty good shape for its age.2ed9a0b6a73cb625283e293fabe2c510.jpga428fc2aaa8a369c07428fba1851d6d0.jpg

Hoping to get some opinions. Can this Wilton 1750 be fixed and still be useful? The shoulder seems to have worn away and has left this opening. Basically the thread assembly has nothing to press against when closing. It also seems to have worn into the right side that the horseshoe would screw into. Hopefully my description makes sense. I bought this last week for $30 knowing it had issues. Figured I would buy it and see what could be done. Thoughts?

Do you have access to a lathe? can you weld?

you could build up with weld and reconstitute the shoulder and re-turn the head and shoulder.

Or if no welding capacity, but you have the lathe, you could cut a wider slot for a clean shoulder, and make a retainer that is really thick to fill the gap of the huge slot...

Miller72, that’s an amazing haul. I love those old crosscut saws and axe/ hammer heads too. What’s your de-rusting procedure? In the Pacific NW, despite the history of logging, those saws are hard to come by due to their collector item/antique status.

Not to mention how many saws got painted and hung on walls... the only good news there is the paint is easily removed, and helps protect from rust...

They must have heard about all the RUST in the East Outlaw.---Although there is plenty of RUST here, there is plenty of people here looking for it too.---It's really dangerous to travel here in Va., every where you go people are stopping on shoulders, stopping in the mediums.---You don't dare drive in the far right lane cause people are constantly darting out between the cars lined on the shoulders, with treasures in hand, with only one thing in mind, and that is to offload those treasures and go back for more as quick as possible.---And they never look to see what's going to brad them.:scared:---Big yard sales are everywhere.

Morgan 335 is all done, except for a new handle to be made soon. A post a few pages back reminds me, what was the relationship between Morgan and American Scale? This one is an American Scale rebrand, but Morgan DID make their own swivel jaw vises at one time. I can only assume these rebrands were very late model Chicago models, or maybe even made after they moved from Chicago to Aurora? Maybe Morgan scaled back to only the regular models and contracted out for the specialty vises? What do you guys think?

Thanks jeff, doing it again I won't use a gloss paint, but other than that it went well. Here are a few more pics, jaws were pretty worn, surface ground them for a new lease on life as a smooth set. Cap screws are not original, but these off the shelf ones are the correct countersink pitch, so its all good.

Really big chuckle this morning. Saw some vises on my local CL and they had a "mrvise.com" watermark on them. Went to the site and it said something along the lines of "we have the most vintage vises in the US, we have thousands of vises." They have a grand total of 3 vises for sale.

I understand starting and growing a business, but lying probably isn't the foundation upon which one should build.

EDIT: turns out I know Mr. Vise and he indeed DOES have at least a couple thousand vises, he's just getting the site started and so hardly has anything uploaded. But I was wrong, no lying here at all, just a bit of a slow start.

I put and ad on my local CL to sell off some smaller vises. A guy came to buy one and wanted me to trade one for this vise. No name. Just 4-1 on the side. It's pretty heavy and turns smooth. Any idea who made this vise ??

I have been getting a few random tools for really good deals lately. I was thinking of looking for an old vise that needed some love and seeing if I could work out a trade. Well this vise popped up. It needs a lot of love, but I worked a deal for a toolbox I got for free (I sanded it down and painted it, total investment was about $15) and a grinder my Brother-in-Law gave me when they moved to Hawaii. So for a total investment from me was $15, I got this Reed vise. I wanna take some blacksmithing classes and I’ll use it once I get some stuff set up of my own.

I see the problems (broken sliding jaw that has been welded), but I also wanna see it looking good. Where can I find a new handle? I don't have a metal lathe. The base should be worth the $15.

Jrobb- the Morgan looks great. Love the swivel jaw.

Unruh- that’s a heck of a deal for $15. Those 406s are very nice vises.

I got a new shed delivered this pas week and drove way too far to pick up a massive heavy duty pallet rack for vise storage (10’ x 6’ x 4’). Will post some update pics when the rack is filled.

Also picked up a few vises this weekend, including a very clean 6” Rock Island 577 and a Reed 324 1/2 swivel jaw coachmakers vise.

Excellent scores on the R.I. and the Reed.---Especially the R.I..---The 577s don't pop up very often, are always priced in the Stratosphere, and never in that good of shape.---Looking past the old paint and build-up, I see one pretty piece of machinery.---Can't wait to see the finished product.---Well done Vise.

Unruh,

Nice to see a fellow Kitsap county member on here. My Wilton 9450 had a pretty bad handle. I bought a steel rod and two threaded balls on McMaster Carr. I don't have a lathe either. Do you have the ability to thread the ends manually with a die?
