Thanks! It’s an Athol No. 0 orginally a clamp-on vise. Clamp was broken so modifications were made for a swivel base.

I just picked this Colombian No. 403 1/2 swivel jaw off CL. The ad was up for a few minutes and I was the first caller. When I picked it up the guy's phone kept ringing about vise. And it works.

Ivan, that craftsman 5152 stand looks interesting. I passed on a similar vise with what looks like that stand because of a welded dynamic. Did you make that stand? Or is it possibly a craftsman accessory???

Va. , Thank you and all I did was post from my phone using the tapatalk app, attaching one photo at a time in my reply post. I don’t even have the VIP version of the app. So when you start attaching the photos don’t click all the ones you want just do one at a time. Hopefully that makes sense.

Mr. W, actually the stand is just a base from a restaurant table I picked for $15. Has a round bottom and is pretty sturdy. Let me see if I can get some photos. I’ll post shortly.

Really liking the design patterns on those Charles Parkers just got into them for first time for myself with two back to back finds last month :D

Honestly these two are my first Parkers and just like you got them back to back within a week or so of each. Now I can’t get enough of their design trying to get some more. Lol. Only thing I don’t like is the up/down, left/right slop on the main screw they have but thankfully I have a small lathe and I fabricated a bushing to take care of that. I’ll post photos of it later or maybe a video if I figure out how.

O.N.
Actually, $400 for an excellent condition baby on a power arm is about fair current value.

"Even an englishman"? As a transplanted one myself, I can say that the English are as tight as a Ducks **** - and that's water tight.

Ken, I merely meant as an Englishman who won't see one again in the wild, even such a rare occurance can't pry open my wallet that far!

Shiftless, in fairness I know the market has ballooned for these but I'm just not able to make the "man maths" stretch that far.

Anyone ever heard of/seen a KV swivelling bench vice with anvil marked as coming from the USSR? Picked one up today but can't seem to find any information on it, like what the KV stands for... Kliment Voroshilov comes up when trying to find info on Russian KV acronyms but I'm not sure that's relevant!

Finally the Parker was next in line to be cleaned up. I’m not 100% sold on the blue, might be a candidate for a redo.

Not the best restore I’ve done, fought with the paint from start to end. Oh well if it was perfect I wouldn’t want to use it.

Will make a great user on the bench.

Maybe it's me, but this Rigid sure looks like the Columbian next to it!

IMG-2535.jpg

IMG-2536.jpg

Except the Rigid needs a resto.

What model or size is your rigid? They don’t pop up much. Those were made by Columbian. The older simplex ridgids were simplex made after ridge tool company bought them out.

Can't remember the model number offhand, but it's identical in size to the Columbian I pictured - 4-1/2" jaws. Nice collection you have AB!

I do like combo vises.

edit: it's a 45cpn

That's a great looking vise MS, and I like the blue - very striking. Nice job!

To be honest though, the vise looks like too much vise for the bench. Maybe a stronger bench build is in order?

Rbarnes, nothing like someone that wants to play games with something they have that you want. There is probably plenty of members here that have similar experiences. I have had the experience of calling on a vise for sale and the owner gets too many calls before I get there and wants to claim it's sold. A week later it's reposted for 10x the price with a giant cut and paste history of the company or pictures taken from this thread.

I have had good luck with other members of GJ and specifically this thread. Some of the other threads are trolled by know it all jerks. I don't know why it surprises me that a member of the vise community would act like that. People can be jerks all over. I don't think anyone here cares how much vise is too much vise. 400lbs could easily be justified by many members here.

As far as prices paid that's your business alone. There are a lot on here that seem to think they should pay no more than $50 for any vise. Once a vise is for sale it magically becomes gold plated and worth top dollar. I commend you for stepping up on price if it's something you want.

Good luck on your search.

Thanks for the kind words of common sense. It was never about money for me, I just wanted that one particular model since I have a smaller one and could use a larger one every so often. I use a big Parker in one part of my shop mainly for pipe. I sometimes work on heavy stuff in another area that is a bit too much for my 405 I have mounted there. I like Reed because that is what I started with and I am very familiar with it. As far as "stepping up", I only buy a vise maybe once a year (if even that) to keep and use. Simple math, I can pay more for one a year than one a week.

You are one of the good guys. Thanks !

Ah, yes, that is in the plans as well. Either that or a stand for it of some sort

Found an old Stanley Sweetheart no. 741 with a beautiful coco brown patina. The previous owner didn’t know the stamp was there so the slide is untouched. It looks to be well stampedf957963d9bd9d1042449274b52ceb7e0.jpg01e0395b8e9c363e2c9b4c550c176467.jpg6ba8bf247c62218e90a1963e794d0c92.jpg

Shift: thanks for the advice. All I can say about evaporust is "I'm impressed!"

wilton_baby3.jpg

Ken:
I knew you’d like it. I’ve never had paint loss with Evaporust but then again, different kinds of paint behave differently. If you’re expecting to preserve old paint, be cautious and check on your parts frequently. Also, if you’re reusing Evaporust, realize that the chemical action slows. Also, temperature greatly affects the speed of rust removal. Cold temps such as below 60F. basically makes the reaction stop.

I have been using Evaporust for a while now...My children chipped in and bought me a 5 gallon can for my birthday :)
