Judging by the photo, it looks like the opening for a 6" Prentiss. That *****. Still a cool vise though

I don't think it *****, just not ideal. Granted I was more excited that is was a No 6, but I have only seen one other No 5 documented from what I can tell.

Yeah, I rounded 3 whole pounds, that's why I said about 210#, sorry if I confused anybody.

How dare you round...shame shame!

I think I am going to name this Vise Pamela Anderson. Seeing as how she came with huge bolt on's! Don't get me wrong I like me a nice pair regardless of if they were born with them, but I feel it is only right to return her to how the Prentiss God's intended.

Surgery has begun

Anyone have a copy of an old ad for the STANDARD VISE COMPANY? Anyone have a Standard brand vise?

Caught in the wild this morning, a unicorn for sure! While I love vises, hate to see them this time of year in Northeast Ohio mounted to a service trucks bumper. First one I’ve ever seen covered...he’s showing it some love. Kudos..

Can anybody shed some light on TORCO vises made by Wilton? These are the only 2 images I have, no info on size.

I found a beautiful Prentiss 512. I really go out of my way to find clean brass emblem models. This vise has a patina that took 80 years to create.

Throw a Lego man in there for scale. The little guy is classy. I like those brass tag models.

Getting multiple 8 inchers is one thing, like Andrew H. who is getting one from each manufacturer. But what the hell is the purpose of getting multiple of the exact same vise? I think I see four Prentiss 58s there.

Here is the "this is how she looked when I bought her" pic. 7" jaws, and when I posted a pic in the FB group a member suggested it was a Prentiss No 6. There is a spreadsheet floating around that suggests it weighs 184lbs. I doubt that weight claim but I will have to put this big ******* a scale to see.

More pics to follow as the restoration moves forward.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/154822526@N03/48914563378/in/dateposted-public/" title="20191017_134355"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48914563378_1b5caf304a_c.jpg" width="800" height="516" alt="20191017_134355"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Does that have replaceable jaws? Typical prentiss crack? I have a no.6 that had the crack, but has replaceable jaws. It's big, but you will find that the slide is pretty thin in spots.

Edit, just saw your other post. That explains the jaws. It should have lettering on the back of the swivel jaw, top side.

Right! I really only want one. Not one from each manufacturer. Just one nice clean example of a badass 8" vise. Reed, Prentiss, Parker or Athol. At least I've come to terms with the fact that when I'm ready it's gonna cost a fortune. I've got a ton of great vises for some amazing deals but I just don't see finding a monster for a crazy bargain anytime soon.

Nice one Smitty! I've yet to find a brass tag Prentiss.

The conclusion that I've come to lately however is that I really need a Prentiss jewelers vise in my collection! Goals!

Yeah, I usually put something in for scale. This is the 3” model that is rather hard to find in good condition. The brass emblem is really clean on this one.

Thanks Chris. The brass tag vises are a bit hard to find but one will come your way. I know what you mean about the Jewelers vises, I’ve searched endlessly at antique malls and vintage swap meets to no avail. I’m going to find one with a $10 tag on it someday, it’s just a matter of time.

How about you start finding 456s and I start finding Prentiss jeweler vises or baby bullets. I'd glad gladly trade that particular type of luck with you smitty hahaha

For sure. The nicest nickel plated prentiss jewelers vise I’ve ever seen sold on eBay in 2017 for a buy it now of $15 and that’s not a typo. It latter sold on jim bode tools for $600. Also that little prentiss sold the same week as the one I paid $390 for which is the none swivel one I have pictured. e9707388428f7f84728649577186f731.jpg067c0fd62d5f1e05b8c0c3aebe9a34ec.jpg

I could see where the nickel plating would come in handy because I’d be constantly drooling all over it.

A collectors question. I've seen a Heuer Primus D.R.P. 4" with swivel go on ebay.com for over 300$.. Do you guys pay such prices? I don't think so, must have been a Heuer collector? I mean a rare 6" Heuer Front or Primus <=WW2 is like <=70 Euro + ~100 Euro shipping (usable as daily vise, a new Heuer Front 6" costs... a lot). Probably still to much, right? But still way less than this price I saw. I am just wondering if anyone would be interested if pointed to such deals of interesting vises. Or do you guys only buy your vises for very cheap?

What would be a "you ****" price on a Wilton 800s Machinist Vise?

First of all, let me remind you that this thread is NOT here to set values for people. There are other sites for that. Try “worthpoint”

Those vises cost $3000 new

Are you asking about a brand new one, or used?
Condition means an awful lot.

Worn but undamaged, I’d get excited about finding one for under $500
But I couldn’t lift it to carry it away!

The used one I'm currently looking at appears to be in better condition than the several others I've restored. It actually looks cosmetically, and functionally 95%. As long as it operates, which it does, I can make it new. Even the handles on the base are in good shape.

That gives me a solid starting point, thank you Shiftless.

I picked up a little Columbian 63 1/2 at the flea market last month for $20. It operated fine, but has been well used over its life. I decided to clean it up a bit and ended up giving it to a friend for his birthday.

View media item 97792It had a well used life before it got into my hands. I didn't want to hide that it was used, but I felt it could use a little cleaning at the same time.

View media item 97792
View media item 97794There is a chunk missing out of one of the jaws. The face was in ok condition, but I cleaned it up with a file. The jaws are non-removable.

View media item 97795Don't forget to keep your vise in a vise.

View media item 97796I cleaned it up with a wire wheel then used a hand file to clean up the face, the anvil area, and some rougher casting spots. I also filed the contact surfaces between the vise and the base to clean up the swivel action. It ground a bit when I first got it.

View media item 97797I ended up using 3 coats of Rust-Oleum self etching primer then a couple of coats of their spray paint. The screw had one split ring washer to keep it on. It left it with a lot of slop, so when I put it back together I used a pair of washers and an e-clip. Made a world of difference for the feel.

View media item 97798The wife was nice enough to hand paint the little red arrow for me. She has a much steadier hand and gobs more patience than I do.

Great job, Sean. Thanks for posting.
Fantastic paint job on the arrow.

(Some day I need to get to my red arrow and do something similar)

I picked up a Columbian 504 1/2 for $45 last weekend at an antique mall in STL. Easily the biggest vise I've ever run across at an antique mall.

View media item 97799
View media item 97800I didn't want this thing in the truck with me if I got in an accident. Even outside it would probably be like shooting a cannon ball if you got in an accident at highway speeds.

View media item 97801I got my current bench vise at a farm-n-home years ago. It's been a trooper, but the vise upgrade-itis has struck hard. Sometimes the tool you have is completely fine until you try something nicer. Not that the old tool is suddenly any worse, you just realize how much you've been needlessly struggling against its limitations.

View media item 97802This one has a lip on the front. Some of the other 504's I've seen didn't have that. Good thing I'm working on a new bench...

View media item 97803I love that green color. Not quite seafoam green. I might try and find something similar when I clean it up.

View media item 97804Shop cat for reference.

While I'm going crazy posting pics I figured I would show off what I got at the flea market today. It's a Wilton 9300 in excellent condition. It doesn't have the swivel base, but is otherwise complete. This is my first Wilton bullet vise and I was surprised how smooth and heavy it was compared to everything else I've used. After checking a few listings online I think I got a very good deal. Guy even took 5 bucks off because I bought a Craftsman block motor bench grinder at the same time.

View media item 97806I think its been repainted but they did a decent job and it doesn't look like they did it to hide damage.

View media item 97805It could use a little cleaning but is in otherwise great shape.

I'm not sure how many vises anyone really NEEEEDS on a bench, but I think I'll keep at least two around for now. Maybe I'll win the lotto and be able to build an actual workshop.
