I didn't get a chance to post my finds from last weekend due to an emergency trip out of town, but now I have a little time. I hit four sales last Friday, two were busts, and the first turned out to be more of an antique dealer selling out of their home. But here is what I found at the first:

Millers Falls drill mandrel, Stanley sweetheart boxwood ruler and a Starrett 299, used to connect two scales together. Not the cheapest at $18, but all things I collect. The last sale I went too looked to be a bust, but as I was on my way out to my truck, I spotted an old toolbox under a table. I offered $10 for the whole thing, which they were very happy about:

It is a very early Craftsman two-drawer with no slides and misc. tools from that era; Snap-on strike-overs, MTF, Cornwell, etc. I haven't even had time to really go through and see what all, but here is a sample:

I also received an eBay purchase, the proper chuck for my long C lathe:

3bay,
What does the selector side of that ratchet look like? Or did I miss that picture?
Tom

You didn’t miss it.

The other side is the same. No selector because it’s a flip ratchet.

No markings on either side, and the last picture’s for Provincial, the grease socket in there.

Yep, Millers Falls. Nice finds.

I think that's "manufactured USA", not Millers Falls.

That is Miller Falls. Petersen made these for various other tool companies, including Proto, Blackhawk, P&C, New Britain, Miller Falls, SK, Klein, some Craftsman, Master Mechanic, and others. That is why the numbers and text look similiar among them.

It's been a while since I've posted. I found a nice bit of Plomb sockets and ratchets last week but never got around to posting. Maybe I'll just post those directly in the Plomb thread. Anyways, here's my find for this week.

I got to an estate sale right as it was starting. It advertised Snap-on, Mac and Blue Point tools, and surprisingly, not very many people showed up! Screwdrivers, wrenches, and picks were $1 each. Sockets/extensions were $2 each. Pliers were $3 each. I was excited for the Snap-on 2nd gen hard handles as they're my favorite. One of the old Snap-on screwdrivers is a triangle handle and I've never seen one in the wild before. Kind of a neat find!

Picked this up at the same sale for $75. It's missing a couple pieces, so I've got to buy a few replacements.

I had a few more sales planned, but decided to call it a day after this one as I had a lot to get done at home. I kept thinking about the sale for the rest of the day and I decided to make a trip back, hopefully to find a few straggler taps and dies from the set I bought earlier. I got there as they were closing up. I grabbed another bucket and started filling it up. They guy in charge of the tools was superfriendly and excited to see me back. He kept throwing in freebies and gave me really great prices on everything else. All in I spent $25 on the second trip. Here's the pics:

Blue Point Noid set (free!)
Helicoil spark plug repair kit (free!)
Snap-on spindle rethread set ($5)
Snap-on Fuel fitting set ($5)
Blue Point butane solder gun ($1)
Blue Point screw extractor set ($1)
Blue Point metric tap and die set (not pictured, $5)

Bonney 3/8 & 1/4 ratchet rebuild kits (free!)
3 Snap-on test lights ($1 each)
Snap-on Octogrip pliers ($1 each)
Blue Point cutters ($1)
4 Snap-on hex sockets and 1 Matco ($2 total)
Everything else in the photo was a freebie!

It was a nice second trip. I did end up finding a couple pieces from the tap and die kit, plus got some great deals on everything else!

I bet the PO rolled over in his grave...

I'm not so sure, I think sometimes the idea that the tools are going to someone who appreciates them makes up for the low price.

I seem to be on the road to recovery from the cold that kept me at home last weekend so we hit a small sale in Berkeley a few miles away. We only found a few pieces but prices weren’t bad. I was amused by the Diamalloy plier, adjustable, screwdriver combination. The Wards pliers had no COO. The Boker lineman’s pliers looked decent but vintage and the offset Channellocks looked brand new and they were ones I didn’t have. I’ll pass the Blackhawk crimpers along to a Blackhawk collector.

Hit an estate sale today and amongst the many items I got this for $2. WHB clamp-on vise from Germany with a "3" on the side of the vise. Interesting looking little vise and it's in pretty nice condition. I've done no cleanup on it at this point. Anyone know anything about these? I'll add a couple of extra pics tomorrow if anyone is interested.

Edit: Oops. Thought I was posting this on the vise thread. :0)

Picked a closing down tool shop over the weekend. Technically not a garage sale, but definitely garage sale prices. Hard handles were $1/piece. Found them in an old coffee tin or random old screwdrivers.

Nice looking Handyboy.
Thanks. I just checked what these have been selling for on eBay. I was shocked. I don’t think that they will be with me long!

When I find them I don't want to get rid of 'em. :) Once, I had just purchased one, and then an old tool dealer saw it and walked up and asked the seller how much was it. He probably regretted asking. :)

Nice score JRG.

Flea market finds from this morning...

LEFT TO RIGHT:

The trigger finger mittens are M-1965's in really nice condition. I plan to use them as cold weather motorcycle gloves.

The box has some 1934-1947 NOS Sherman carb needle valve assemblies in it.

Some interesting ignition wrenches in the lot.

A tilting inspection mirror.

An extra long midget spinner (unmarked) and midget ratchet (Indestro made).

The book is amusing! (See Pics 2 & 3)

We found a likely looking estate sale about 15 minutes from home. It looked like the previous owner of the tools had spent a lot of time at the Oakland Sears store. Plenty of Crown items and a complete early =v= cad plated set in a heritage box. A nice set of Indestro midget sockets, along with an 8 point Plomb and a Wizard socket.

Nice finds.

Lugz, pm incoming on the book.

Hit up the Goodwill today. With all the Christmas items out, one of the other shelves was overflowing with regular household. I was shuffling things around and found two hammers that were just put out today!

$1.99 each. I was starting to rip the gooey tags off.

An XLCR claw hammer, and what looks like a Plumb ball peen.

Nice find. I found my 1st pair this past summer, they are super clean unused like yours. At that time there was one on eBay that was NOS still plastic sealed to the factory cardboard hang tag. It went for North of $100 iirc

Interesting, mine have a square throat adjustable which is different than yours.

Here (See Pic 6) are those military trigger finger mittens and that inspection mirror (See Pic 7) – which has three different positions. I think it’s cool they (HTI?) re-purposed what is typically a mechanical fingers/pick-up tool design.

Also, note that I posted the strange Williams wrench in the Williams thread here, three of the more interesting (FOAKs for me…) electrical/ignition tools here, and the Duro-made Western Auto Wizard midget drive ratchet here.

Lugz, pm incoming on the book.
As you can see (See Pics 1 through 5), it was an actual book published in 1945 by Macmillan, called “Ahoy Shipmate!” by Henry Lent. Someone cut out the middle of all the pages, pasted a different title on the cover, and the punchline on the back. Really convincing work! :)

No prospects for me this weekend. I'm putting all my spare time into a garage bathroom project that has a 60-foot ditch across the back of my house, as well as other projects and a full work schedule.

Good luck to my fellow pickers!

Wind chill in the 20's but I had an okay morning for how dang cold it was. Got all this for routine flea market prices from "Fish," the loudmouth liquidator I swore I would never buy from again. He is either desperate or I caught him on his meds. Only 3 of the Ezy-Outs are original, but the pre-1963 labeled can was worth it empty.

Left behind a circle-NB hinge handle with the hinge flopping loose. In hindsight, I probably should've grabbed it anyway, because even a floppy hinge would be welcome for someone who needed one to complete a set, but I have been going through my autumn cash and dipping into my winter cash a lot quicker than I want to and I am in a 'more selective' phase again.

Nice. Sounds familiar. Some sellers you have to catch on a good day.

When that good day is, you never know. Last week I watched an item sell for $20 that the seller previously offered to me for $50 or so. I thought he must be having a good day, so I asked about an item I wanted. I swear he previously quoted me $3, but that day it was now $10! No thank you. Should’ve bought it when I had the chance.

Going to meet Smokeshadow for the last swap of the season! Should be good.

Sounds like a good time.

I hit two yard sales late today, not much. Also a rummage sale. Did the flea market early this morning.

Found this in the rummage sale. 1/2 price, so the $2 ziploc of junk was $1. I was sold on the 1/2” drive male extension in there.

Also, the Goodwill hammers came out nice after Evaporust. It freed up the paint spatter so I could scrub it off too. On the other hand, it probably screwed up the finish on the wood.

you guys are doing very well!

Pretty slow here in more ways than one - not many good CL adds, and I even expanded my range to include one near a collage FM I hit maybe once a year. The FM was pretty well packed with sellers, and I came away with zip. The YS that got me out there was my best score of the day... :wtf: And that wasn't hugel:

Blue Bird Mini Snips, (been ages since I bought any snips...) the big ones are Boker, and I believe that is the first pair of Boker snips I've ever seen. They are marked "inlaid for us on Stainless Steel" and that is a first also as I thought Wiss had a hammerlock on inlaid snips. the dykes are old Proto, and the wrench is "Planet Jr" and I'm sure the twist was a PO's mod.... A couple of lengths or rope and the brass sprayer (another unique one for the Collection! - still no dupes!) rounded the buy out, and I got it all for three bucks

This was from the last stop of the day, an estate sale. pretty picked over.. -Readers just right for my nightstand, a folder of needles about 1/2 full, the art is pretty cool! and some hinged split rings. A buck, all.

Today’s flea finds.

Most were cheap, which led to picking up a lot of stuff in need of a good cleaning.

Mephisto saw, Stanley bevel pair, Bonney t wrench, unknown hatchet, Channellock pliers and cutter.

Wizard wrench and Perfect handle wrench, both in well used shape. Klein cutter, 3 Vise Grips in rough shape (one from yard sale), P S &W seamer, Wards wood chisel, wide opening Diamond adjustable (second green handle find in 2 weeks), Dayton magnetic bit handle, Klein nut driver, Cornwell magnet.

Ran into a seller with a big box of screwdrivers. Didn’t look too promising till I started digging. Ironically it was the seller where I found the 3/8 Mac Sabina driver.

Brass tweezer/bulb puller?

Screwdrivers- Greenlee spinner, Matchless, destroyed Mac, Ridgid.

1/4 socket spinners- Mac (to go with the 3/8), Bonney, Thorsen, Oxwall ratchet

Sockets- unmarked possible Apex? hex holder, 2 Snap On, 3 Plomb WF, Proto Los Angeles u joint, Snap On hex to 3/8 extension, Snap On NOT Guar spanner socket, Williams screwdriver blade.

Pics of the tweezer/puller. Any ideas?

Mephisto saw,
Cool! That looks like it's a Mephisto Tool Co tool (1940's and later...), as opposed to the earlier W.A. Ives Company that used the fancified Mephisto brand, but still uncommon. Nice find!

I finally cleaned up that Reed & Prince cross-recess tip - don't call it a Phillips, 'cuz its not! - screwdriver (See Pics 1-4), and took some shots of the NOS Sherman carb valve seat assemblies in their little balsa canisters (See Pics 5-7).
