Trying word magic on the classifieds today...

Found another VS4 sitting in plain sight at the other end of the country for 50 bucks... hmm. Maybe if I send an empty parcel.. (a1 interested in a VS4?).

And another with some strange other vise as set for 50 but might be a VS2, gotta ask. Also somewhere far away. Anyways that¡s not what this is about: I believe I found something interesting 'close' by, the price is prohibitive, though (110€). The swivel lock pull pin and shape make me think Prentiss, but there is only a 21 on the top visible? It's 5". Seems to have a swivel jaw.
Pre 1911 Prentiss 21. Actually 5 1/4" jaws and 109lbs. I've got one just like it!

Here some System Koch tube vises for Sandman and honza.vosalik from the last vise haul.
First one is an LES and the other a Spannwerkzeuge Zeulenroda. The LES has some heavy duty custom jaw inserts for better vertical clamping I guess.
Both will be for interested parties, but alas they are 125mm, so a tad heavy.

And of course a VS4. A bit rusty beneath the paint, but a good wire wheeling should take care of that.

Was an interesting trip, cramming all of this (+ the Heuers and a 140mm Breitenfeld&Scholz) into a very little car (kinda reached the load limit, but super nice gas mileage! :))

Beautiful vises. Too bad shipping is north of $200.

Hit an estate sale today and amongst the many items I got was this vise for $2 - WHB clamp-on vise from Germany with a "3" on the side. Interesting looking little vise and it's in pretty nice condition. I've done no cleanup on it at this point. Anyone know anything about these? I'll add a couple of extra pics tomorrow if anyone is interested.

honza.vosalik: Now, now, shipping can be anywhere from $140 up to what you imagine. Always depends how you can chisel out those pounds from one parcel to the other :) That's why smaller is better in this case, but they looked so good and were cheap, so I grabbed them. And maybe an eccentric wants a 5" tube vise as work vise, who knows :p

txlonghorn1989: german classified and ebay is full of them. They all only show this rhombus with a number (seen 1 - 4). But: I've seen this instragram post and the maker there is J.L.B. in rhombus = Jul. Lück, Breckerfeld, Westfalia. (still exists, making screws and bolts) - unless there was a british company with the same initials :). Hope that helps. W.H.B. I can't find anything. There was a WHB = Wilhelm Hessmert, Brügge, Westfalia but then the the WHB should be vertical. So.. dunno.

tracked down a couple of good sized vises at a business closing sale today:
A nice 5" Parker 106 and another big 6" Reed; this one a 34 . The 34 is as tall as the Starrett 926 but a little lighter; although it didn't feel that way when I was moving it lol. The "refresh" line is getting a bit long again so these may sit for a while.
Sorry the lighting stinks in the 3rd pic.

yes, the Reed does need and will get a new handle.

Nice score on the 34 Bob! Usually when I see that vise, it has the “bolt through the table” swivel mechanism.

Here is another similar one I got at a flea market. Looks like the mounting screw is exactly the same.

I just got my newest addition, and it’s definitely the smallest vise I’ll ever own. It’s an Athol No. 1 with 1 1/2 in jaws and Pat’d Nov 14 1871. Awesome little vise in amazing shape for its age. Does have a lot of paint I need to get off it but just a few nicks in the slide and a small drill mark on top of the slide is all I can find so far for damage

The patent is a reissue of Simpson's 3 Oct 1871 for a quick acting vise using a half nut.

Vise- this 34 does has the 'bolt through the mechanism'; the table it's sitting on has a 4"x6" cutout in it for using an arbor press so the bolt, plate and nut are there, just out of sight.

Picked up an excellent condition (especially for it's size and what people typically use a 6" jaw vise for) Prentiss No. 22. It will sit along side the No. 5 for now, until someone makes me an offer I cannot refuse!!

I don't have a picture yet of the No. 22, but I will leave this here for now!

A while ago I mentioned a VS2 being available near Frankfurt. Nobody bought it so I talked the guy into sending it to me, sent him a parcel with styrofoam, load plate some original Dresdner Stollen, and all and finally got it back.
Also saw two more VS4, actually missed one, sat there since september, similar to the VS2. And now it's gone. My bad. Totally missed that one. The other one is "only fetching" and 450 km is a tad far away :(.

Old crappy VS2 is gonna be a surprise for somebody (as much as that can be a surprise, more like 'here, rebuilt it'). And the nice VS4 is gone. Not that the person made me an offer I couldn't refuse, I am not really aiming for that (Could have, definitely, taken more), just was persistent. Even with the shipping costs. The other one... hmmm...

Rusty - that’s awesome! Already saved that pic of the vise. It looks like my vise not only has all the parts but even the original screw that holds the 1/2 main nut in place. Pretty cool

JKB - the 1/2 Main nut is a really interesting feature and works very well. I haven’t seen anything like that. It’s amazing how small the vise and all its parts really are thanks for the patent link!

Outlaw - thanks I saw it and had to have it! The embossing on it is in great shape as I started wire wheeling some of the layers of paint off

Just picked up this thing, found pictures of someone restoring one on here, I'll probably do the same.

Any way to tell how old it is? It has cast in jaws, non-replaceable, and it looks like it's hardly ever been used. Going to get started on glassbeading it and disassembling it shortly.

edit: I don't think the threads were quite engaged in this photo- I thought they were but they weren't. it's ridiculously gigantic and heavy, reed #3c. Makes my old worn out bench vise look like a toy.

Rule of thumb opening measurement is taken with the vise closed and then measuring the end slide to the backside of the static. BTW, nice clamper.

What Wrenchguy said. also measure the Jaw width, not the opening, that is how they are sized generally.

A Reed 3 is a Great find! however better pics of the Dynamic jaw and slide junction? it almost looks like it may have been welded? :dunno: if so that is a repair as it should have been a one piece construction for the jaw and slide.

Bastel and not Basted. Sorry
Also, anyone know where I could get or have made pipe jaws for my sawyer? A few are missing so someone would have to have originals to make them I guess. Reverend Scott is much too busy understandably given all he does. Other ideas?:headscrat

Hi folks: What would be a fair price for a Record vise #5, Made in England?
The vise is in good shape.

It's got 5" jaws, but that doesn't really do it justice - it's much larger and beefier than the pair of old 6" vises that have been the workhorses of my shop since before I owned it.

No evidence of welding on it anywhere.
Taking it apart now, can't get the pin that holds the nut in place out. Here's a picture, the thing at the bottom.

Looks like it just drives out from underneath but I've hit it reasonably hard and it hasn't moved - I don't want to risk damaging it, so I figured I'd ask on here before I hit it any harder.

Oh, here's some pics of the two "daily driver" vises in my shop, not sure what brand they are, they have a triangle logo and say "made in brazil" but that's about it. They're at least 20 years old, and probably older than that. 6" jaws, and way smaller overall than the No.3c reed vise.

jons- love the picture, looking forward to the 22 pic

Thanks! I've got it torn apart now and the stationary jaw assembly is taking an electrolysis bath. So it will be a few days before the bathing is done and I will have a chance to get it put back together.

I havent posted in a while but I picked up a sweet Yost vise on Friday. Its an 8.5" vise and weighs 265 pounds. At first I thought it was a No 99. But after doing some cleaning a found a really wore down 108 numbers underneath the yost name. I think the 99 is just a part number or something because Ive seen it on a swivel base 8" yost as well. Anyway heres some pics

So I came across this vise recently listed and I’d love to pick it up but iv never paid this much for a vise... kinda wanted to get some thoughts on it. It’s an Athol swivel base and swivel jaw but looks like it’s been at the bottom of the ocean forever. Guy is very firm at $150. I haven’t seen many of these vises and I love the swivel jaw and the pin looks original but it’s threaded and tapered from what iv found doing a search on it. No clue on jaw size or what model#

Jeff - Awesome pick up! Love to see those monsters surfacing.

Dlavallee22 - Looks like a 3 or 4" jaw swivel jaw Athol or Starrett. Buy it (assuming no cracks/repairs) and ask questions later.

I picked up 2 swivel jaw Athols over the years, both were found to have broken swivel jaws on disassembly. Needless to say, I don't buy swivel jaw Athols anymore. I have Parker, Prentiss, Morgan, Columbian, and probably some other swivel jaw vises I can't think of off the top of my head, no issues. So make sure you inspect the swivel jaw very closely.
By the way, are you in E. Bridgewater MA, or some other E. Bridgewater?

Thanks man! I usually just pull the vise apart because they're much easier to move around in pieces. Im not sure what Im going to mount it to yet. Still need to figure that out lol. Whatever it is, it needs to be big

Vise - I’m going to take a very long hard look at it tomorrow. Just worried it’s gunna be completely frozen and won’t be able to move or take anything apart to even inspect, we will see though

454 - I have to say that, that makes me worried lol but I might get lucky and find this one intact? Fingers crossed! I’ll definitely inspect the hell out of the swivel jaw. Where did you find yours were broken in the past? and yes I’m in East Bridgewater MA, looks like I’m right around the corner from you
