It's been so long since I've been out to a sale. I finally had a rainy day with SWMBO at work and a break in urgent home or work projects. Plus, reviewing hundreds of posts for the PotY award finalists got the picker juices flowing again.

Two sales within striking distance. The first one, second day-half off, was a bust. If there were any tools, they were long gone. I picked up two solar garden lights for SWMBO for two bucks. We'll see if they hold a charge.

I'm sitting outside the second one, waiting for opening. It's also a second-day sales, but specifically advertised "lots of tools". We'll see what's left in 40 minutes.

Thanks J-Man, but what kind of itty-bitty drill uses these hair-fine bits?
I usually use a pin vise for small bits in soft materials. Im not sure what you would use to drill holes in metal with these tiny biys.

Tiny bits are often used in a "sensitive drill press." That is the proper name for a small, high-speed drill press that is fed by hand pressure, not a geared feed.

The second sale was worth the wait. A full basement, somewhat sorted, had a fourth of the space alloted to tools and garage-y stuff. Here's what I dug out and bought for $52:

Nichols No 1001 axe sheath--I didn't notice until I got it home that the snaps were busted
NIB Heath/Zenith motion security light
Bix o' Norton 220 grit sandpaper
Footprint Tools 150A combination hand/breast drill

d347e1c5a71f6ac9146a275cc3e27708.jpg

ProReel 30-ft cord reel, 10 Amps
Sears drop light on reel--bulb works!
2x Liberty Hardware 16" keyboard slides

8c7ac9b82e8f4d9bc4358c8a939010cd.jpg

Paint mixer tool for a drill
8x paint brushes for the paint box
Brass wire brush
Scotch-brand blue duct tape

0b8c032e939805bfb64f4f21a45a0cc2.jpg

12V power supply--hope it works
Craftsman P2 stubby Phillip's screwdriver
Pyrex glass clip-on handle--one source said 1930s...?
S-K Wayne standard & Gedore metric DBEs
Sears 30874 6" adjustable wrench
Stanley utility knife
No-name air puffer--seems a quality piece
Matco No 18 dividers
Sargent rubber-jawed parallel mouth pliers
No-name hole punch
3 S-K sockets--2 are knurled bullet sockets, 40114 (7/16") & 40119 (19/32")

aa216153ddcc9408a1b34c752d6f18bc.jpg

Box full of stainless steel hemostats and assorted tweezers, scissors, needle nose pliers and one speculum (!).

89e3c6ca467f0c6db8431e9c203d4fcf.jpg

The prize in this haul is the Stanley Rule & Level Co No 15 folding ruler. It is made of brass with rosewood inserts and has a slide rule on one side, although the slide is frozen up. The rosewood is a little rough, but I found two for sale on the internet that claim they were made between 1854 and 1915!

BB you can get replacement AA Nicads, and I've had decent luck replacing with rechargeable NiMh as well

Reluctantly went to an auction last night. They post very poor pictures and the only thing I saw that looked interesting was a small vise. It was 40 deg, raining and a 30 min drive but a decided to go anyway. Glad I did. The vise turned out to be a Columbian 804. To make the trip even better it was the first item auctioned. Ten minutes and $18.43 got me headed home.

I found a garage sale today that was pretty picked over. Looked like they probably had some cool stuff on Friday. I still got a box of goodies for 5 bucks.
Some old maps and pamphlets from my area, a cool book of plywood furniture plans from the early 60’s, some bags of snaps and rivets, a nice leather handle, a sk 3/8” ratchet, a p&c screwdriver and a pair of plomb ignition pliers.

Thanks, Outlaw. Turns out one of the two had a failed solder joint inside. I tried reconnecting it, but it appeared to have other problems, too. I put the purple globe on the working stem (they screwed on, fortunately) and have some fresh NiMH batteries charging now for it.

Toto, those Steel plate vises are sort of on the rare side! Nice find!

We got a break in the rain today but even so the one sale that sounded the most promising canceled (at least they bothered to post it as canceled! I hate when they just don't bother...)

One Estate and one late posted yard sale. Few tools (well, that were not chinesium)

An old gun cleaning kit, a Lathe dog, 2 COT carts, A pipe fitting vent, Swiss Army knife, Body dolly, and a Broom adapter to a big handle

attachment.php

And a Nice flag (stitched stars and I don't think its ever been flown), and a new green opaque shower curtain (I use these for my Privy/Shower stall for camping. at least one panel is about done...)

attachment.php

$10 all from the Estate sale

And the late YS had these for $5: Mini Krauter Electricians pliers (need to post these in the tiny tools thread), a Magnetic tray, a Body hammer, and a Japanese Saw blade (I need to see if the Xacto handles work for this...)

GJ member Shiftless alerted me to an estate sale a few blocks from home. We went an hour and a half after it opened to avoid lines. All of the marked prices were ridiculous but after some negotiating, I came home with these. The US made Craftsman set is about 95% complete. Found some Barcalo, Lectrolite and Williams tools. The next to the last shot is the long C Craftsman and the last one is all of the Craftsman outside of the set.

Great finds you guys.

Here’s one from earlier this week.
Picked up two 6 drawer Equipto cabinets with a heavy wood top.

Tied down for the ride home.

I’m going to use this for a “desk” in a someday office that I plan on for the shop.

Here’s what it cost me.

Well, we are definitely in the doldrums now. I had a few stops planned, but my first should have been the best. Big old house, outbuildings, family-owned for 30 years. Alas, it was mostly just junk and rat piss. I did find a couple of things, but certainly not worth the wait and crowds.

Fluke punchdown tool, SK 5/16 RP, long C tack puller and a box of Dorman washers. $3.

Next two stops were busts, but the fourth stop was not too shabby:

Proto, Snap-on, Williams, Plomb, SK, Hinsdale and Alloy sockets, MT1 dead center, countersink and P&C 6oz ball pein. $8

After that, I stopped at the local Restore as this one often has good tools. And I found this:

A nice vintage Duro socket box, with a perfect decal! I also found a Duro speeder and a Goodell Pratt screwdriver, along with a Singer driver. All that for $3. Here is a closeup of the decal:

Then I made a couple more fruitless stops.

I have one:

Electro-Mechano - 1000-10,000 RPM, Chuck is 0-5/32 0 taper

Now I'll have to keep my eyes open for a pin vise! I don't drill enough tiny holes to justify a "Sensitive drill press"--what am I saying?? If I had one of those, I'd be drilling tiny holes all over the place! I've put it on my list!:bounce:

Yard sale finds from last week. A cast iron Scotch tape dispenser and a Hudson Super Six hubcap. The seller dug it from the ground in NC.

This weekend's finds:

First stop I came up with:
a Kennedy 1017 tool box, $5
an orphan tote, $1
a Millers Falls 2A hand drill in outstanding condition, w/7 bits--minus the off side handle, $5
a file holder, $1
a Snap-On F-711-A Flex Head Ratchet and a Snap-On F-10-H6 Breaker Bar, $3 for both.

13 Dec 19-2.jpg13 Dec 19-3.jpg

Second stop I found ModernTools Dial Caliper from Japan--very nice--$4 and
a Goodell-Pratt scribe--$1.

Third stop I thought the little block plane might be a Stanley 102--it wasn't, $4
I grabbed the off-side handle from a useless breast drill in hopes it would fit the MF 2A. It didn't. It along with the Armstrong Bros. S-wrench #477 and the Herbrand #1829 Obstruction Wrench were $1 total.

13 Dec 19-1.jpg

The next day I went back to the very pricey sale I visited on Thursday for their 40% off day. I was surprised that they had done as well as they had.

I was also surprised the little oil can was still there so I grabbed it.
Stanley Sweetheart square
Two small Xcelite screwdrivers
Two large Proto screwdrivers (on the yellow one you can see a very mild version of the POs habit of defacing his tools using a grinder to carve a band around the shaft) $6.60 for all.

The 24oz ball peen hammer head had the broken end of a handle nub stuck in it and three colors of paint spilled on it. I offered a penny and they took it. When I got it home and stripped the sides I found one side stamped "DEMON" and the other side "WABASHRY". Nothing turned up in Google. Then I noticed a small gap between the H and R and being an Indiana boy, thought it might mean Wabash Railway. Turns out that RY is an accepted abbreviation for railway but I still didn't find anything about it in my research.

Not sure if they exactly go together, only that I found them in different parts of the shop. The box color makes me thing WWII, but you would be the person I would ask.
That color was popular before the war, though, too, and that logo is not the wartime logo. As for the speeder, I hear you, but it does fit and they didn't all have the same bend in the swing. It just never ceases to amaze me when someone runs into something like this, that as much as we've seen and learned, there is always something else, something new.

To true. I don't have much in the way of Duro around the house but will probably fill it with D-I sockets. But there was no way I was letting a decal in that nice of a condition stay there.
