Rounded up a few of the coachmakers/patternmakers and a few of the reed 200 series....unfortunately the 104R and 204-1/2R are at work and cant get the whole 4-4.5" Reed R series lineup..

Prentiss swivel jaw model 10, columbian 224-1/2, 2019 production (holland MI) brand new yost 503 before they discontinued them, Meadeville PA Yost 503, Reed 204 dated 3/53, Reed 214R 7/56, reed 224-1/2R 9/54 and a 9/63 Reed 2C

attachment.php

There is likely a 100 year span between these two....

attachment.php

the 224-1/2 reed and columbian opens up to 11" whereas the new yost 503's opens up 8-1/2" and the old yost opens up only 8". the prentiss opens 10". the 214R opens 6" just like a 204R reed. and the 2c at 6.5"

Big thanks to Lyodski and Chrisnazzy. Both are great guys. Made a trade with Lyodski for his Colombian 603 as Iv been working on collecting 3” swivel base vises. Then I came across an opportunity to make a trade with Chrisnazzy. The Colombian 603 caught his eye and was then traded with him for one of his beautiful already restored Rock Island 571’s as I seem to come across Columbians but never find any Rock Islands in my area. Here is my RI 571! Chrisnazzy did a great job and even did a fresh coat of paint before mailing off to me which was above and beyond!

Dlavallee22 that rock island looks very nice! I’m glad you and Chris ended up getting what you wanted.

Swivel jaw bench vices are pretty rare in UK - there's a C Parker 376 on eB - but looks like bench mount been modded .
Not for me, but if you want a swivel?

From what I have read, the Trojans were Parkers economy models. They don't look like they have separate jaws from the iron castings?

A couple of pictures of a Starrett 925 I finished recently. I made a new handle and put a set of Kevin Scott's jaws on it. The paint came out close to original I think.

Ever wonder what a Prentiss 456 looks like under the swivel jaw? I did. This is how it came apart, no rust, no cleaning. Looks like it was machined yesterday.

Get
Wow, that looks better than new.
Dave
That Prentiss is in great condition for a seventy year old vise. How does that not even rust a little.

Get - that looks stellar!

Dave - that 6” Prentiss swivel jaw is sweet! Here’s my rusty old Prentiss 23. Just got the swivel jaw moving this past weekend.

That is fully what I expected mine to look like inside, so I was pleasantly surprised. No offense, that 23 is an old war horse!

I was also surprised I didn't have that slight cavity in the body, and the surface was milled flat. It must have been good machining if it kept rust out. Although that may have been the first time the swivel jaw had moved since factory fitment, I think.

Newby here ....... I recently inherited my Dad's Reed 24 vice. It was kinda grungy but worked fine.

So over the course of a couple of hours I partially disassembled it, degreased it, hit it with a wire brush, and then a Couple Coats of Rustoleum

ITobigQ

I've since noticed that some people do not paint the slide.

What's up with that?

If you shouldn't paint the slide .... why?

If you use the vise any at all, the paint will ware off anyway.---It will streak and scratch and look ugly.---And worst of all, paint creates drag on your slide where you really want free easy travel.---And that requires some lubricant which don't mix well with paint.---Plus it just looks better.---JMO.

Todays scores.
A 6” swivel jaw Hollands 46
And a 4” Wilton bullet

The Hollands is rust seized. But in great shape.

The Wilton works great. Just needs a clean up.

Total cost...... Had to buy him 2 cases of beer.
Anyone have any info age on the Hollands? Can’t find anything online.

Made a pickup last night from a CraigsList posting. Had to drive an hour or so, but i like it. Wilton 9450S with a stamped date of 4-51. Really nice condition with only problem being a broken jaw on one side. Moves super smooth and essentially no damage. I think its wearing original paint. There is the remnants of a small orange or red label on the top of the bullet but I can only make out 3 letters "TEE". Maybe this label said something about the steel?

EDIT: I did a little checking elsewhere and figured out the label originally said "5 Year Guarantee" so that must be original paint. I added a 4th picture as a capture from another source.

Guy ran a little welding shop out of his house in Akron. Had a table with some wrought iron railings in process. He had a 4" Columbian vise mounted and a Prentiss Bulldog under the bench. He said he got the Wilton out of his buddy's Grandpa's shop some time ago and it was assumed it had been there since new. He was selling the vise to raise some capital for more shop equipment.

I'll get a new set of jaws and wire brush everything for a new coat of paint. Stay tuned.

Reverse,

Definite suckage on that Hollands! Here is a picture of mine. I paid a lot more than two cases of beer. It is my main user. I think there is maybe only one other picture of a 46 on all of GJ. I thought I had the honor of being at least the only one in Washington. Oh well. It's still a pretty exclusive club of two:thumbup:

A night in a Kroil soak and a weed burner got the Hollands 46 apart.
The guy at the scrap yard I found it in. Said it came from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Started stripping the paint off. And someone had stamped it.

Saw this on Craigslist. I believe it is a C1. That is pretty impressive, someone either sat down and thought, "how can i destroy this Wilton?" or else it was used by some of my ex coworkers :spit:

There was a C1 missing the swivel base on CL near me that was also destroyed. 99689e20c62ad001e881f173392171e8.jpgb0e6b82aa894e995ef8a292dba71f504.jpg

A friend gave me this Athol 614, It was his Grandfathers. it's in pretty nice shape under the paint, smooth jaws like my 614-1/2 user but it has the registration "lump" on the front of the base unlike my user.

athol614a.jpg

I would like to see some Athol paperwork showing the option of a smooth base and smooth jaws. At first I thought Lockheed had milled off the "lump" themselves on my 614-1/2, but I've seen at least a half dozen Athols now with a flat bAse that I know it is factory.

First post here. I bought this C Parker #41 at a car swap meet just because I like to have a vise about everywhere I turn around. Kinda like you guys seem to be. But I do leave mine outside.
Anyone know anything about this? Reversible jaw with some kind of what looks like a old JB Weld repair, I believe just to hold it on. There’s no cracks or welds. What’s the pin on a chain for? Goes all the way through, never seen that. I believe this one was a through the bench, maybe even a swivel, it has the threaded hole on the center of the bottom for a bolt. I guess it could’ve been set up for either way you would want to attach it.
Don’t most of the swivels have a solid base? This one has the two bolt holes on each side of the base for bolting it down.
The lettering at the bolt is the patent date of Nov 28 1867.
19.5” long closed, 4.5” jaw, 10.5” opening.

I think that pin on the side has to do with the swivel jaw mechanism.---Looks like there is a pin or fastener missing at the center of the swivel jaw also.---I think it is a 2 pin mechanism.---And yes, being that old that probably is a through the bench swivel base.---JMO, but that vise is just too valuable to be a user much less left out in the weather.---Again JMO.---But I would get me a good stout Chicom vise to stick out in the elements.---You've got a pretty rare unit there.---Congrats on procuring an antique Parker.

Type in ("Oldest Known Parker Vise") in the search bar and scroll down when you get to that page and you will see what I mean about the 2 pin system.

This is an early Parker Coachmaker's rear swivel jaw vise.

The patent is actually Nov 26 1867. It is patent #71498, issued to Charles L. Kingley and assigned to Charles Parker.

More than a few of us would be happy to give you a sturdy vise in trade and throw in a nice bonus on top of that.

Daggone, I guess I better bring it in. Scrappers in the neighborhood might get hungry. It’s been outside now for probably 6 years. I poured the concrete pedestal to fit it. I’ve used the **** out of it too.
I’ve got several others I can replace it with.
I just sold a huge Prentiss that I had and the guy started drooling on this one too. Got me thinking..

If you bought one of these cheap and started using it to haul manure & gravel and left it parked out in a field, that would be a big mistake.

I had forgotten that I had to make a recess in the concrete to set this into. Had the bolt on it when I bought it, also has the lip for a swivel. I still don’t understand what the bolt holes on the side are for though.
