I have an Athol 624 1/2 but it is missing the swivel base. I'm looking for the swivel base and associated parts...Any ideas?

I found a base for this vise! But I was missing the right bolt (different threads) to attach it to the vise. So I made a bolt, and bushing, that works so it is fully functional. However, I might still be interested if anyone has an "original" Athol 7/8" shoulder bolt with the odd-ball 12 threads per inch - that holds the swivel base to the vise.

I'm looking for a jaw for a craftsman 5197 I picked up. The dynamic was replaced with a smooth jaw and I'd like to get a knurled one to replace it. Jaws from a rock island 574/594 also fit it.

Anybody have any 5.5 inch long jaws in good shape. Need some replacement jaws for an old, unbranded Made in USA vise (may be a Sears knowing my grandpa)

I plan on retapping the bolt holes in the likely event they dont line up with the old holes.

PM me a pic of what you have, would also want the screws holding the jaws if they are in decent shape

Longtime reader, first time poster. I inherited my grandfather’s Craftsman 5196. He just had it bolted down to his bench through the center bolt. It is missing the swivel base and the parts that go along with it.

It’s still in pretty nice shape as is. For sentimental reasons, I’m looking to buy all the missing pieces and put it to work as my primary vise. Anyone have any leads?

Wicked: it might not be easy finding a swivel base for that Craftsman 5196 because we think Rock Island vise company made them and they've been out of business since the late 50's. also you'll be happy to know that not only is it your gramp's old vise, but it's one of my favorite (at least top 10 or 20) and I've owned and still own more than a few vises (haven't counted, but more than 100 and was quite a few more before I started finding member's that needed a good old one for their benches.

here's a thread I started about the little bigger Craftsman 5198 that might interest you and post up a few pics and your story there about it being your gramps and you needing a swivel base and who knows you might get one. also since these old vises are valuable having a machinist make a swivel base would probably be a good investment even if you never sold the vise and just looked at it bolted to your bench and it made you smile.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=351100&highlight=craftsman+5198

here's a few pics of your swivel base on other 5196's i've saved pics of or own.

also if you can't find a base or make one for a reasonable cost or in your budget you could drill a hole in the other side of your static's base and mount the vise with 2 bolts, but that wouldn't be my first option.

Drives: Thank you for the reply! I did read your whole thread about the 519x series. Very good information in there. I agree, these are some of the best looking vises ever made. It’s definitely not going to be an easy task to find a base. I’m guessing that I’m going to have to eventually find a parts vise to buy. I wouldn’t want to take apart another good one. I feel like I have scoured the whole internet already. If you do come across a parts vise, please send them my way. I’d be happy to pay for the correct pieces.

I thought about just bolting it down the way he had it mounted. Or making a raised steel base to bolt it to. I’m going to hold off on breaking out the drill bits and probably purchase something to use in the mean time.

Btw: That red 519 you attached looks absolutely perfect.

Edit: I did take some more pictures of it to add to the archive.

Wicked: happy to hear you have already done some reading about your gramp's 5196 and thanks for the good words. I know a few members have found some broken ones and I saw one with some bad jaws about 2 hours from me I almost took a drive to get that another member did, but I think he's going to save it.

one thing that will help you find stuff from members is to post on our threads when you are taking the time to read them even if it's just a WELL DONE or making a quick comment so you get to know us and we get to know you.

again welcome and hope you like it here as much as I do. granted it's the internet so it's far from a perfect world in here, but you'll get to know the negative members or ones that might not never grow up so avoid them and do your best to find things to smile about when you are here.

cheers!!

Looking for a back jaw for a wilton 9300.

It's a 3 inch. Back jaw or fixed jaw as some call it has a casting number 9300 on the side.

Thanks

RACER: welcome to GJ and make a few more posts and then maybe post up a few pics of the part of your little wilton you need. I click on the paperclip just above where we write our posts and download up to 7 pics per post which might be easier for you than downloading pics from an online picture hosting site.

are you just looking for a jaw about an inch wide by 3 inches or the entire static jaw portion of the vise? here's an exploded view of a Wilton Tradesman which is kinda close to your vise except it has pipe jaws and it's a cheaper vise.

Both holes are broke out. Looks like someone dropped it.

Is the end cap missing or broken? if its just the hole broke out turn it 90 degrees and re-drill

Dang. I didn't even think about that. Now I just need to find a set of lock nut handles and I'll be golden. Thanks

You can fab lock nut handles out of all thread couplers, cross drill say 1/4" and get a a LONG 1/4" bold and a jam nut. file/grind the head round, thread it through and jam the jam nut down, then cut and peen the threads off. grind/file the nut and bob's your uncle.

Not factory, but completely serviceable

Some early models also just used acorn nuts?

Well I picked up a Columbian 504M vise with a broken leadscrew. Due to the handle being in great shape it does not look to be over torqued. The nut also looks fine. But the castings have been beat on a bit.

So I am looking for a replacement screw assembly (7/8" diameter thread, 4 acme threads per inch). So if you have one, please let me know. Without a handle is fine.

Thanks

I've been looking for the same part myself; I picked up a 504 1/2 last summer with a broken screw in close to the same location. From what I can tell looking at old parts catalogs and web sites the 504, 504 1/2, 604, and 604 1/2 used the same lead screw. It also looks like Wilton 10104 and 10204 might be the same lead screw too. I've had good luck finding old vises at estate sales so it might be worth checking out the listings in your area; you might find a good donor vice.

Looking for Columbian 506 m2 spindle and main nut. If I can’t find the parts, I would also sell the vise for parts. Still has a good dynamic jaw, and main body. Missing the correct spindle and nut.

I need the nut keeping pin for this type of Craftsman vise. I've modified a bolt to make it functional but would like to replace it with the proper pin.

Also in search of a good swivel base for the same vise.

Any ideas on model year would be appreciated, as well.

Thanks,

Hi everyone. I recently bought a Charles Parker #204 and am in the middle of a restoration. I finally got the base nut off and found that the lower swivel base "brake shoe" is broken on the pin end. Does anyone have one laying around? Are there other compatible vises that share parts (#974, for example)? Thanks.

I got an easy one here. :D

Was looking for the sliding swivel lock handle for the old Craftsman. I have the base retaining bolt

I bought replica handle from E parts was cheap like $6 but though it was listed as a Craftsman replacement part its totally the wrong size overall...too big. The Craftsman are all 3/8" internal thread (I have 4 different vises) and the new one is a 12mm dia and metric thread...just dont fit.

There is one on Ebay but the handle and shipping almost cost as much as the vise did
