What am I missing here?

Factory misprint, IMO. Almost certainly a mismarked Trojan.

Maybe I’m missing something too. Is there any literature etc. out there that shows a 705 1/2 of any description, be it a Trojan or any other kind of standard Parker?

Not that Im aware of. But then again, I’ve only seen 4 or 5 full Parker catalogs from their ~100 year history.

But that wasn’t the question I was responding to. My post was in response to this:

It appears that it wasn’t meant to be marked Trojan. There isn’t room for that name as it appears on other vises of the same design. If someone has literature that shows Parker offered these vises under their own name, please share it if you can.

Was saying I must have been missing something because there obviously is room for “Trojan” on the vise. Also, every Trojan vise I’ve seen is marked on the “back”: “C. Parker Co. Meriden, CT” , exactly as Maui’s vise is. Sometimes you have to use the best available information and make a judgement. And to me, it’s pretty clear it’s a Trojan vise, without the “Trojan.”

Shame it doesn't have the original handle. That is a real give away on the trojan's, the handle ends are larger than average balls.

I am typically a MIUSA consumer but found this too good to pass up. The stand made by a local HS Metal Shop teacher so I moved off my Made In USA trend for this blue beauty on a well made stand.

I scored a new Wilton C3 on Craigslist and built a beefy stand for it.

Waffle,

Outstanding first post and welcome to GJ! Please give some details on you stand build if you have them. I am sure there are others here that would also like to see it.

For the C3 stand:

I wanted a tripod, as it is the most stable platform. I needed a lot of weight in the rear of the stand to counter the weight of the dynamic jaw - especially when extended 10" and holding some heavy object. I used two 2"x4"x18" flat bars, welded them together and cut them at a bevel to match the leg angle. I then added two more 1.5"x4"x18" flat bars and welded it all together. The solid steel rear leg now measures 7"x4"x18" and weighs around 125lbs. I can now sit on the extended jaw (at 10") and the stand is stable - even with the huge moment arm and my 190lbs.

The front legs are 3.5" DOM tubing with a 1/2" wall thickness. Cut at the same angle as the rear leg.

Legs are welded to a 12"x12"x1" steel plate. Vise mounting bolts are welded to the top of the plate.

Casters are rated to 700lbs each and have no brakes. To stabilize and level the stand, I added 7" carriage bolts (3/4" dia) connected to the legs via two welded nuts. To move the vice, retract the bolts and roll it around. To secure/level the vice, raise/lower the carriage bolts. Details in the attached picture. Excuse the sh*tty welds.

Total weight of vise and stand is 529lbs - but it rolls easily.

I've been reading posts on here for a long time. First real post to the forum. Thanks for the warm welcome!

Wow, that C3 looks like it’s fresh out of the box. That’s a huge vise and the stand really compliments it. Well done.

Yes - I got it in the box, brand new. I gave a lowball offer on Craigslist after watching it for a month. The owner called me several days later to accept my offer. He took it as payment for a welding job some years ago, and just wanted some money instead of the vise.

The boards have been a bit quiet in my area but I did manage to find a Wilton 600S for $215. This vise has been well used so it’s going to be a great candidate for a full restoration. I ordered a new set of jaws from Autopts’s eBay store and they just came in. I’m going to fab up a new handle as the old one has a nut on the end. I’m thinking about using Hammerite Light Blue for the paint. I can’t wait to make the vise look like new again.IMG_0886.jpgIMG_0887.jpgIMG_0888.jpgIMG_0890.jpg

Thanks shift. This vise was used but not abused, it should clean up pretty well. The vise has a 2/79 stamp but it seems like a pre 1974 casting.

Yeah, those date stamps on Wilton's can be very deceiving. I think it's pretty obvious that Wilton wasn't practicing "Just In Time" manufacturing. The newer design for the machinist and "C" series vises actually came out sometime in 1971, as seen in the Wilton catalog no.130 below.

Thanks for checking in, I've cancelled the "Smitty Alert".

Rescued this little Wilton. The support under the static jaw was broken off and the jaws were halfway screwed in with 2 different types of hardware; but, it should be plenty for the type of light-duty work I'll use it for.

The vise looks great, it still has a lot of life left in it.

KMS
There are doubles but I think I’ve got the set in the 770 series and almost the set in the 760 series. I really enjoy collecting these 90 - 100 year old vises. They’re really well made.

Guys,
After about a seven year hiatus from the vise game; health, business, and life has brought me to the point I am divesting myself of most of my vise collection. I have been able to find good homes for most of my big vises to friends I have made on my journey to the dark side. Yes I found OWWM and let my hunt include old machines. I am now down to vises that need work and hard at restoration work now. This one should probably go on the spread sheet as it is going to a new home shortly. This is a Pat. Pending Wilton Model 60 SJ on a swivel base. It had about 1/4 of paint and a brass bolt penned into the pin hole. After a lot of work, soaking, heat, drilling, etc., etc., it is apart and surprisingly well and with some oddities not seen in other Wilton's. Tomorrow I am going to start work on making a new pin for this. I am enjoying the restoration work (in retirement life) and trust everyone is doing the same while hunkered down in our garages.

Nice work cclfn, casting says No 60. I added it to the spreadsheet with out the max opening and the weight. Second #60 I have seen that are different vises. Pretty rare vise. Thanks for the pic:s. Good to see you back.

Found this mini at my dads in the usual box of stuff no one else would bid on. Only markings are an odd shape and single digit.

Nice to see that ad about that era of Wilton vises now employing ductile iron for stressed parts. I always wondered when they would use DI like Columbian doing back then. Yet the verbage of "stressed" is also a bit misleading: look at post 79061 and it appears the jaw shelves are not enhanced with DI.

Thanks Kevin I the corrected model # and when I put this back together I will add its weight and max opening.

Another thing I found odd was that the nut is a full two inches shorter than a new model 600 nut. It also had four tabs cast on the back end (although there was a casting bubble at one of them) perhaps to aid in alignment of the tail cap and pin holes for maintanence??? There was no dust cap on this when I got it either making me wonder if they ever had one on this.

Nice collection of Stanley’s, Smitty. I love the Sweetheart stamps on the tails of those.

CC - that Wilton 60 SJ is very cool. Have only seen a couple others of those.

Here’s a 3D printed baby bullet I just purchased:

Have a Charles Parker No. 436 vise, PAT. 1930. Purchased it from a gentleman in Vermont several years ago. Does anyone on this great site know where pipe jaws & mounting pins for this vise can be obtained? Would like to attach a couple images of this vise, but cannot see how this is done. Selecting the
Insert Image
button asks for a URL, just like the
Insert Link
button. Please advise. Thank you.

Thanks, there’s nothing like a well struck sweetheart logo. I’m gonna order one of those baby bullets. I mentioned to him that he should stamp the key way with the MFg date.

For you guys who frequently pick up BIG vises I made this little attachment to make moving them safely if you have an engine lift, crane, chain hoist or forklift.

Credit goes to matt_i whose post on another thread today gave me the inspiration.

That’s an amazingly good reproduction of a baby bullet. Do you plan to paint it green?
I assume the handles are steel. Is the body plastic or ???
