I'm pretty sure my compressor pump is shot. I have been using it way more than normal over the past few months (since I've been home, and have been working on a lot of projects). Sometimes running almost continuously for hours.

Well, all of a sudden it seemed to not be increasing the pressure very much, it sounds different (higher pitched), and the oil in the sight glass is black (previously it was clear). I've had it for about 8 years now, and regularly change the oil.

I'm going to take it off and eventually try to rebuild it, but in the mean time I need a replacement.

I'm tempted to replace the compressor pump with a dual stage, instead of a single stage. Any reason NOT do do this?

Recommendations for a replacement pump?

It's an "Industrial Air" 60 gallon model. Here's the specs:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002MKP5K6/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Tank Size: 60 gallon ASME*
Maximum Pressure: 155 psi
cfm at 40 psi: 13.4
cfm at 90 psi: 11.5
Voltage: 208-240 volts
Running hoursepower: 3.7

I would use my back up compressor, the portable that I use for my nail guns, while working on the main compressor.

While it's still connected block intake turn on this for 5 seconds if you don't hear a knock more that likely just need a valve plate and reed valves. If compressor knocks bad rod or wrist pin.

If you have the skills to " up-grade " to a 2 stage, go for it, as far as recommendations, your wallet is pretty much a guide for that.

There are scratch and dent pumps on ebay, you have to know what your looking for.,.. I bought a Champion ( 5-7.5hp ) with pulley a couple weeks back, 2 stage, brand new, with some scratches for about 1/3rd of list ( pump only, not compressor ).

Im replacing the same size pump on a Saylor Beal that has a million hours on it.. I bought the new pump for about what the parts cost to rebuild/re-seal the Saylor....

Food for thought..

Watch your RPM’s and motor HP and match them correctly with a different style pump. I went through all this last year when my old Speed Air acted up. I lucked out and found the parts I needed and just did a rebuild.
FWIW, I think you can find a direct replacement type pump at Harbor Freight.

The first thing is what compressor pump do you have already?

It may be worthwhile to repair it, but that depends entirely on what pump it is.

If you want to replace the compressor head then the most important spec is that you need to match it to the motor. "running horsepower" of 3.7 means little to nothing. You need to know the true FLA of the motor to be able to match a pump head to it.

Study the pump heads avaiable here, http://www.aircompeq.com/ka.htm , pay close attention to the pressure and pump speed columns for each pump head. The faster you spin the pump the lower the rated pressure for same HP. These things have to be matched, motor/pumphead and speed/pressure. The horsepower of the motor is going to determine what pumphead you select for the best match.

I only use this Kellogg page as it shows the relationships the best.

The "3hp" harbor freight pump is a good replacement option. My brother has an 80 gallon, 4ish hp compressor with it. It delivers on it's specs and is decently quiet. It's not the best specs for a "3hp" pump but I suspect the real world difference between any of these compressors is small. If the difference is important step up to a 5hp model.
