I had a few minutes tonight so I laid out the grid for holes on my fabrication table.

The 2” wide blue tape represents the frame of the table. The black lines will be the grid layout missing the framework tubing of the table.

Center punched and ready to drill.

What do you suppose you’ll use to drill said holes :D

Besides the new toy I am sure there is some kind of satellite laser guided layout system Mike will be using! [emoji51]

Hmmmm. Let me think. What should I use to make the holes.:headscrat

Heard Mike got a hatchet just for that. Lol.

Mike so you’re not doing the table full of holes?

Not a full-on layout table Shorty. Just a few holes to clamp things when I can't reach to the middle of the table with clamps. I still can't believe I'm putting holes in it at all.

Sorry to disappoint ya Duke, nothing more high tech than my 6' long measuring stick and a tape measure.

Thanks for following along and commenting guys.

In all seriousness Mike, drilling holes in my welding table was one of the best mods I have made. I was reluctant as well as I use it for assembly etc and was afraid the holes would exacerbate parts, hardware, etc falling through but it has not been an issue. I did 4” OC and that seems to give the most flexibility for using Strong Hand type clamps.

Thanks for the feedback Duke. I swore I'd never have a fabrication table with holes as I too use the table for so many other things besides just welding and fixturing. It's my transmission assembly table and so much more than just welding/fabrication. I did purchase a small 18"x24" fixture plate that has 1/2"-13 holes threaded into it for fixturing small parts and it works great but just waffled on a larger grid for those larger parts that I can't reach to the middle of the table for clamping.

Although mine will be on 12" center and will be 5/8" holes, I may down the road (if I find I like this setup) drill and tap some 1/2"-13 holes for using clamps with if I find the need. I can see both styles of clamping being useful but I'll wait and see.

Mike, if it comes down to it, why not just get a sheet of 11ga or so stainless bent to cover the top and thus the holes? Then you won't lose any of those pesky little ****** parts!

I like it Mike, go for it. One of these days I’ll do mine too but my issue is my top is stainless. I figured I’d use the mill to do a 4-6 hole steel guide plate so once I got my first first hole done would just pin it and run so I keep it as close to dead nuts on as possible.

That is an option Marc but I'll wait and see how it goes and if it will still work fine with a few holes in it.

Funny you mentioned that Cam. I was going to build a small fixture which would locate in one hole and orientate the next two but on a 12" grid I may have been overthinking it. Cuz that never happens......

Couldn't you countersink the holes and just leave the correct bolt in there? Then you'd still have a flat surface where nothing could fall through

I hope I can control myself.:bounce:

Swiss Cheese...cones to mind.

Reminds me of when I was in college and helped manage the Machine Shop when it was open to the public every Tuesday night. Had an old timer come in and set up a huge Shaper we had. I mean like 72+ inch stroke. He mounted a Lathe Bed on there and scraped on it for week after week.

After a couple of weeks I asked him what he was making. He said "Nothing. I just like making chips with this thing".

Just think Mike...you can recoup some of your investment. The Slugs and the Chips are worth about $0.12 per pound based on $240.00 per ton on clean clip.

I don't think the spacing I am putting in it will affect it all that much.

What I want is a happy medium between a fixturing table and a general purpose table.

As needed I can/will drill specific ones. I already know that my axle fixtures that I built a few months ago will need a few drilled/tapped holes to mount them to the table when needed so I may go ahead and do them now.

Last night I got out of work late due to meetings and by the time I got home my son had the DIL’s car on the lift so I decided to quickly buzz around the lawns.

I drilled the 5/8” holes in my fabrication table tonight and got a decent feel for the Hougen mag drill.

All 15 holes completed in just over ten minutes. I was impressed and pleasantly surprised just how fast and smooth drilling these holes went. I wasn’t rushing but I wasn’t lolly-gaggin’ either.
f2a1e8ce44b71cd3b874a6b62fd7687e.jpg

I used a chamfer bit and just breathed over the holes to knock the sharpness off of the circumference of each hole. I didn’t want a large chamfer just enough to slightly debur the holes. I then wiped the table down to remove the residue from the cutting oil.
fd49352c554b6d235073089b6068c1cb.jpg

I then set up and spaced my axle fixtures so I could drill and tap for mounting to the table with 3/8”-16 but they sent me the wrong drill chuck adapter for my mag drill. I was sent the splined adapter which is for the older HMD904 models. Mine requires the slotted adapter so I’ll have to make a call tomorrow and work out an exchange.

Lastly my wife presented me with my Father’s Day gift. She felt so bad that it was late due to shipping but I was happy regardless.

I can’t wait until Saturday morning to sit on the deck and relax with a cup of coffee. I reserve my “good stuff” for weekends and drink the regular stuff during the week.

I can't believe it only took you that long.... But you did all the prep work earlier, that makes anything faster.

I am not a fan of any type of coffee, I take it that coffee is special?

Your holes look great...

Ok I just heard that in my head..... doesn't sound right....

There’s just something about making easy chips that’s so satisfying. [emoji3060]

I can’t tell in the pic, we’re you using annular cutters? I can’t make out any slugs.

I bet it feels like the drill already paid for it’s self Mike. Nice job

There isn’t an explanation, you’re either into it or there’s always green juice :dunno:

But I get it mike. My daughter got me a nespresso machine and several boxes of addiction for Christmas. Holy smokes, I’m flipping hooked. And to offset the high estrogen levels of owning n loving such a feminine item offset it by pretending I’m having coffee with Danny divito everyday. :bounce:

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised at how fast the drilling went. Like you mentioned I had already done the prep work or getting the grid laid out and holes center punched, which actually took much longer than the actual drilling.

By the third hole I had figured out the secret was to put a little pressure on the alignment pin and slide the drill until the pin dropped into the dimple made by the center punch. I then activated the magnet and it was in perfect alignment. Then apply a little cutting oil and plunge the annular cutter into the table releasing about halfway through to add a bit more cutting oil.

As for the coffee, my FIL got me hooked on it a while back. The Black Rifle Coffee Company grabbed my attention for a couple of reasons, besides it being delicious. It is owned by veterans and strongly supports similar beliefs as my own when it comes to patriotism and it is also located just down the road from me in Salt Lake City, UT. I haven't tried all of the flavors yet, but there's a few I like in particular and a couple more I would like to try. The Black Rifle is saved for my weekends and when we are traveling in the coach. Just regular old coffee for normal weekdays.:bounce:

Thanks for following along.

Yes Matt, I was using an annular cutter for the 5/8" holes. They sure made short work of that table. I can't wait until the next job I get to use it on now.

On paper it hasn't paid for itself yet but you are so right about it feeling like it has. I should have bought a mag drill years ago as I think back about how often I would have been able to use it and save time.

Hope all is well with you Cam. We need to catch up some time, I'd love to hear how the job and relocation is going.

You made short work of the table Mike.

I'm a coffee drinker as well, the Black Rifle stuff is good. My days always start with a cup of Joe, nothing better than watching the sun come up on a cool morning with a hot cup of coffee!

The mag drill certainly made short work of that job! Does yours use set screws to secure the cutter, or is it some sort of quick release. I've been eyeing a DeWalt mag drill (I get a deal through work) which uses a quick release...I wonder about how secure that is vs. screws.

I would like to update my table to the 28 mm holes used by the bigger Bluco tooling (my top is 1-1/4" thick). I think the drop in tooling for either 16 or 28 mm holes is much more convenient than threaded holes and toe clamps. The clamps take up a lot less real estate on the table vs. trying to find a spot for the step blocks, etc.

Graham, the Hougen HMD904 uses set screws to secure the annular cutters. They are still quick but I'm sure not as fast as a quick release. I have no experience with the quick release system but my concern would be how tight the cutter is secured to the arbor. Most other quick release systems I've used on various items there always seems to be some "slop" in the setup which I would be afraid would translate down into the work.

Again, I have no experience with the one you are referring to but something to at least investigate before purchasing.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by. That brake pedal you built turned out bad ***.

That is more Mike than the tool.

You can see what years of experience can do. Proper feed rate based on pressure is the key. That bit will have tons of life if only used by Mike...

Table looks great Mike!!!

Now the Holy Table.

Thanks Pat. I was trying to figure out how to express the importance of paying attention to chip formation and rate and then adjust accordingly, as well as keeping the cutter lubricated.

I've heard of people getting very good and very poor life out annular cutters and I've been able to get good life out of the ones I have but how they're used is key.

Thanks for finding the words for me.
