I don't bid/buy Wiltons either. :scared::headshake:dunno:------------:lol:

That leaves more for the others around here. Looking at recent sale prices compared to what many of us paid just a couple of years ago, I would consider buying Wilton bullets to be an investment in the future.

My daily driver is a Wilton C1 which I consider to be an excellent user. But there are many other brands that are just as good and not nearly as high priced as the Wilton bullets.

Speaking of Wiltons...

I'm renovating one and am looking for a Wilton paint color previously mentioned here. It's more blue, not Rustoleum. Someone posted it here some time ago, but I can't located it.
any help would be much appreciated.

I don't know what va. is trying to say here. I like old school traditional looking vises like reed & parker. Wiltons are fine but i don't have any nor tried to buy any.

My posting about the no.3 near me was my way to help to a g-j'er iffen they wanted to go for it. I don't have a clue what they bring, i wouldn't let that auction outfit ship it. I noted today buyer is responsible for removing it from bench. Anyway good luck with ur projects.

I believe the paint you’re looking for is Hammerite Hammered Light Blue.
Here is a C1 I did with that paint.
Thanks to Smitty who did a color comparison test of the several colors guys usually use.

A thread was just opened in Vintage Tools regarding this Parker vise model. Apparently, a GJ'er saw it at an estate sale in Meriden. The vise is sitting on the floor and is at least 3' tall. The poster said he verified the asking price of $25,000. The owner claims he can verify provenance and that it's been to two world's fairs. Just wondering what's the most YOU would be willing to pay for it? Certainly has to be one of a kind you'd think. Here's a link to the thread here.

Not really saying anything, just acting stupid, which I do very well.---No protest or criticism here.---There's several brands that some vise aficionados drool over that I won't consider.---They just don't turn my crank as they say.---I thought the smiley-face at the end would be self explanatory.---Just goofing off.

A couple of pickups over the last couple of weeks

Parker is a 5" 373 swivel jaw

Monarch is 3.5"

Athol is 4"

Speed vise is about 4" I haven't looked closely for a name. Can anyone identify?

Anybody still have a pic of the huge wooden Prentiss vise that sat outside the Prentiss factory.---If you extrapolate for size and weight, recon what it would be worth.

Is this the picture you were thinking of?

Value on the high end would be maybe 200, that is cleaned up, painted, etc. As it sits 75-100, obviously if you can get it for less then even better. But vises do seem to vary by region. If you never see them for sale it might get bid way up.
Thank you. I bid it up to $45 and let it go. I ended up picking up 2 other vises at the auction. A Columbia 204 1/2 that has a really ***********. Also a craftsman Machinist vise looks like a Wilton Bullet rebrand that is going for parts. If anyone needs any parts let me know. The static jaw was broke then welded. I won't have pics until next week as they are down in the shop.

Honestly, I like the color. Definitely different than what you see on most vises, but I've done a bright green one before and I liked out it turned out. I think yours turned out very nicely as well.

Evening fellas!

Been a little while, but I think it's possible I've acquired something rather special. I can't find any pictures of mentions of it through google searches and, as far as I can remember, it's the only dynamic swiveler vise I've seen. Granted, it's got some issues, but I thought that the uniqueness of this particular vise was worth taking on an example with some, ahem, issues...

What do you all think? Anyone seen this one before?

OR THIS CORKSCREW!

I stopped by this roadside attraction while driving through Hurley WI on highway 2 It’s outside a liquor store. Imagine that. :)

What does this have to do with vises?

My wife and I were on our way to pick up about a dozen vises being sold by friend and fellow GJ member CRSINMICH. When you learn that the world’s largest corkscrew is in nearby Hurley, how can you NOT go there?

I was reading about John Moses Browning and saw a picture of his shop, with a swivel base vise mounted farther out over the edge than is typically seen. I would be guessing, it looks to be a Prentiss to me. I'm just curious about the vise that was used by the man considered the greatest firearms designer of all time. Someone here can probably ID it immediately.

Next time make it a hard one.
That’s definitely a Prentiss Bull Dog. The “graffiti” style lettering is unique to the models of that era.

Here is mine.

First post here, the board seems a great source of knowledge for various vises and the restoration of them.

Picked up this York 150A today off FB marketplace. Operates smoothly and the jaws are in good shape. My plan is to restore it by cleaning off the old paint, give it a fresh coat of red and a good greasing.

Hammerite is no longer sold in the USA, VOC issues.

I've been using Rustoleum light blue with great success

Thanks VA. I found that thread last night, but didn't see any mention of the #52. I'm wondering if anyone has any of the old catalog literature that may have an image of it. I can't tell what is/isn't original on this vise - granted, I haven't even tried to open it up yet as it was a four hour round trip. Regardless, it's pretty darn old.

MayerMR...KMScott has done so much work organizing the vise spreadsheet for just this situation. Use the link below to see an actual Parker no.52 listed in the "Vise Info Thread".

With that out of the way, congratulations on picking up a very special early Parker swivel jaw vise. It's as rare as a "good politician". Take your time with whatever restoration you decide to do, as it will be such a rare example of that particular model.

I found discussion about these vises (not sure of the exact vise number) on this thread around these dates: 9/30/2017 into October. I didn't read many of them, nor do I recall the details of the posts. I suggest you go poke around that time frame and see.

Mayer,

Fierljeppen/mikes - You two nailed it! Thank you for finding the catalog image and the posts on the Vise Info Thread! That'll help much in getting it back into original fitment. I'm usually a pretty good Googlizer, but I sure couldn't find much on this vise, so I appreciate the help.

Looks like they may have made at least two variations on the #52. The images in the Vise Info Thread look like the whole upper swivel portion of the dynamic jaw rotates, while it looks like mine has a boss cast into the lower portion of the swivel area. Neat.

I'll certainly be very cognizant on how I go about doing the R&R. I have a good friend/fellow vise enthusiast who just happens to be an amazing welder (his trade). He's my go-to for cast iron repairs and does amazing work.

See Exhibit 1, he fixed my sad-sack anvil for me with a piece of 4140:

Thank you Steaks, I dug through and found some additional references to the No 52 there as well. So, there appear to be at least 3-4 examples that have made their way online, but she's still quite a rare bird!

MayerMR...I found a different Parker no.52 version in another 1876 catalog, which would make your vise anywhere from (1867-1876), pretty old indeed.

I'm very fond of the old Parkers, and really wish the wooden Parker vise mentioned earlier could end up in a Meriden museum somehow.

Here's a Parker 953-1/2 I just finished. It was brazed in an area that's in a high stress area. But it looks like the repair was performed properly and worked for years, and still holding. Now to find a good home for it.

That looks like an excellent braze job.---Some know how braze a break and some just know how to throw brass at a break.---I can't do either so I have no room to talk, but I would know which repaired vises would worth investing in.---And a braze done right is as strong as a cast weld.
