The Eron looks like a clone of the Record number 8. The 8 is probably the least desirable of Records 8" bench vices, being Gray Cast Iron and plain screw.

The more desirable 8" Record 114 was originally cast in steel and later in SG iron and is much stronger ("unbreakable"). It also has the Quick-Adjust.

Of course, the Eron might be a Ductile Iron copy of an 8?

Swivel bases are not particularly common on Record vices, at least in the UK. Putting one on a circular base that itself allows all-round access seems strange.

Leinen patent for screw fixed to dynamic jaw 1890
Peddinghaus Rotator patent 1937
The lever is just for the steel loop and stops rotation around the horizontal axis, swivel is with two bolts like on normal Peddinghaus vises.

Thanks for pointing to this patent search site and for your info on the Peddinghaus and Leinen, so I guess the little English vice of 1900+ is a copy of the German Leinen.

And using this Espace patent search website showed me the GB patent for the Vono - the key is the circular section machined way for the slide, and the date is much earlier than I guessed -- November 1922 so i guess the vises Vono and I have were made not so long after. Now to find how to search UK Registered Designs and Patents applied for.

Nevertheless, an 8 inch vice don't come knocking every day, especially on its own stand

The Eron looks to be the same build as the Paramo 6 but with wider jaw flares. The tower is the same. I'd guess it weighs just over 100 pounds.

I do not think it's worth $500. The $150-200 range is about the most assuming a person really wanted it.

thanks Vono - there was green paint (prob not original)when I bought it a while back and I repainted it a duller green - I believe there were some signs underneath that it had been a dark green/brown.

the 7w has a few flecks underneath of a dull red, prob original, but may be overspray from something else?

the 3c has a thin layer of brown/black which looks original - could be something other than paint/enamel, very thin, but protective, but I wouldn't say linseed oil

what do you/vise fans prefer - BLO or an attempt at the original colour? and should I pick out the lettering?
Danny

Hello Danny thanks for the info'.
Sorry i'm not sure what BLO means  but if it's unpainted/ painted, it really depends on the colour it's done in/ how well.
I rather like original colours myself (if known) as I like things to look period (the green does suit it though) & again it's just my opinion but i'm not mad about lettering being picked out, somehow never looks quite right to me.
A real treat to see another Vono like mine & some other models, thanks again :)

Oh wow just read this, Nov 1922, that's a lot earlier than I thought too ! Almost a hundred years, brilliant stuff this !

Vono vises again -- as the swivel front has "provisional patent" (at least mine does) it may well be before 1922 - so you might have a 100 year old vise. (unless there was to be another patent for the swivel).

BLO = linseed oil (boiled, but untreated also works) - it oxidises/hardens to give a moderately protective coating which shows the old patina.

Ah right boiled linseed oil (thanks for the tip incidentally).

Yes you're right that's pre-Patent being granted & therefore early (mine's marked that too) - great work, well done. Be interesting to find images of any about marked after the patent was granted as I assume they'd change it.

Incidentally I had another look at my pics (couldn't be bothered going into the Garage) if you look at the pics of the front, there are small traces of green paint just visible, so looks like they definitely were green.

Got these two Columbians for the low price of free. The 503 is ready to bolt down and use. The 504 needs a spindle and a rust remover bath. Given my zero investment so far, I’ll think I’ll put the effort in to make the 504 functional again. Hopefully I can locate a spindle.

Any one know what this is or how it was used. It does not have a place for the normal long vise screw. It is big and heavy (sitting on top of five gallon bucket).
Does anyone have one that shows the pieces missing? Thanks!

Hi

I don't suppose there are books about vices/vises are there?

It certainly seems worthy of a book.

I don't really want to google vice books, might end up finding something else

Cheers

New vise I picked up today: Craftsman 5212.

I picked up the Craftsman 5212 today for two boxes of 9mm ammo. It isn't in horrible shape, but I'll have to clean it up over the next few days and see it without rust or grease. I love it so far, haha.

A couple of drill holes and some scars. The handle has one end welded and the other crudely pinned. Stamped on the body and under outer jaw with "129". I'm excited to get it disassembled and cleaned to see if there are any other marks. It opens and closes very smoothly. I outlined where the teeth are worn down on the swivel base. **Edit: Ed4banger let me know the teeth come like that.** 20200923_155909.jpeg20200923_155913.jpg20200923_160112.jpg20200923_160117.jpg20200923_160218.jpeg20200923_160223.jpeg20200923_170832~2.jpg

It's been a while since I had something to post in here!

I had a Total TOO today - I went to the PO to mail some paperwork and there was an impromptu GS on the main street near the PO (only sign was in front of his house - I nearly missed it!)

Not a lot out, and no sign of people so I had to knock on the door. Old guy comes out the garage door, and I verify he really is having a sale and he said he was "Just putting a few things out, I have a van full and other things" (But clearly he's not working at this...)

I ask if its just what out or if there is stuff in the garage, - Yes, but he hasn't got that far (well after 2 in the afternoon... :) )

There is a pretty big swivel jaw vise on the floor I can already tell is a Prentiss, despite no big markings... and after asking my standard Q's on "Do you have any ...." and getting nowhere, I ask about the vise on the floor....

"I just took that off my bench. I replaced it with this swivel head vise I picked up..."(Yep! Chinese wonder vise :wtf: )

"Is it for sale?"

"Well, yeah, I guess so, I don't need it any more."

"What do you want for it?"

"Oh I don't know its real heavy, they don't make 'em like that any more ... Yadda yadda ... Maybe $50?"

"Can't I look it over?"

"Sure!"

I make sure it operates and the shelf is there and there are no obvious cracks or welds...

"Would you take $40?"

More hemming and hawing and he eventually counters with $45. Deal!

So a 4-1/2" swivel Jaw Prentiss came home from a trip to the PO!

I'll have to do some looking for what model, 'cause no markings except
PRENTISS.NY on the back on top...

Outlaw scores a fantastic “you ****” deal on that Prentiss. It’s probably a #20 but I’m not the resident Prentiss expert here. Calling Smitty...

I see you finessed the seller on the final price. I bet you would have been more than happy at $50 but in some situations if you quickly accept the first price thrown out there, the seller might think he asked too little and start hesitating to sell.

Here is a pic of a Prentiss 20 I found on GJ posted by member Low Friction 8 years ago.
Curious how the one outlaw picked up has no lettering. ?????

Congrats Outlaw, really nice find and keen negotiating.---No cracked slide and the swivel jaw tail is nice and round, not chipped or broke off like they usually are.---That thin tail on them is brittle and easily damaged.---You did good.

Wow, you did great in that Prentiss no. 20. Like VA mentioned the tail is clean and the back lip of the swivel jaw is perfect. As a Prentiss collector it’s really important to have a clean brow over the meatball and yours checks that box too. Yours is a very early model, I would put it in the 1900-1905 range. I would be curious to know if there is any stamping on the very top of the swivel lock plunger. Congrats on a great vise and a great deal.

Edit: the pin looks original and it’s rare so see the slide edges so clean after all that time. Somebody really took care of the vise.

My guess is that Prentiss may have sold unbranded vises through other outlets.

I have three Prentiss 22's, but only one of the three is branded.

So I have this Rock Island 574 on a crappy stand that's been sitting outside for a few years, has welded jaws, a crack, but it still functions just fine. I offered it for free to the guy that mows my lawn, he took a good look at it and said "no thanks". I've never heard of anyone turning down a free old vise before, does not compute.

Here is the Rock Island made Craftsman 5212 in its final form. From what I could find online, it seems to be a rebranded No. 73 vise. No other markings were found besides the "129" and an "X". I figure date of manufacture is January 1929. ***Edit- I found "1933" stamped on the slide***

It had been around a welder at some point in its life and the weldor decided to permanently affix it to something. I ground down the leftover beads and it turned out pretty decent. The before and after pictures are below, let me know what you guys think! I'll also include the catalogue snippets. Craftsman catalogue is the bottom section designated as "99HM5212". **Edit: Scale says 55.2lbs** 20200923_155907.jpegIMG_20200925_133016_670.jpgIMG_20200925_133016_704.jpgIMG_20200925_133016_705.jpg20200925_123754.jpeg20200925_123823.jpegScreenshot_20200925-001350_Gallery.jpgtapatalk_1600920442825.jpeg

Lu-Max, I was in N.E.California the week of 14th through the 18th. I was in Alturas/Modoc County..
If you were in that part of 'Northern California' I'd have been very happy to bring that Rock Island home with me. It's just a bit of clean up and machining to clean up the welds and make new jaws for it..
Sad that your landscaper is unable to see past the surface rust and welds to recognize the quality underneath.

I suspect my earlier reply was a victim of the DB issues...

Thanks Smitty! Coming from you a REAL Prentiss collector, that means a lot!

and thanks to all the others that commented!

Smitty - On the swivel lock plunger - NO markings whatsoever!

Just unloaded this Canedy Otto 20" drill press, it is six foot tall and I think it is a model 36, but cannot find it marked with a model number. . It came with the vise looking thing I posted the other day. Do not know if that would help identify or not? I am guessing it had some lever that is missing on the pivot point. Would like to see a photo of what this is supposed to look like.

PARKO VISE - any info?

I picked up this 6" Parko vise yesterday from a nice older gentleman here in Canada.

He did not seem to know much about it, but claimed it was made in the USA. He seemed to be selling a few tools for one of his senior friends.

Can't find much info about Parko. Some mention of it being made by Athol-Starrett.

It's in great shape. It doesen't look all that ancient to me, and I can't see any made in the USA markings on it. Even if it's an import, I think I did OK for the price. Scored 4 Wilton made in USA 4" extra deep forged C-clamps as well.

Having not owned a USA Vise a year ago I have surely come a long way this year. Here are three I picked up from the same Garage sale this month. $80 total. The Wilton Bullet was sitting atop a tool chest and the seller said never used. The Parker was bolted to the bench. The Stanley needs some help....lol.

Last month I picked up the Wilton Woodworking Vise for $20. Here is the before and after on that one :)

I've already cleaned the bit of rust off the Wilton Bullet. Sure is nice bringing home a Vise in restored, well, new condition. I already restored the Wilton Woodworking Vise. I feel the Parker and Stanley need paint.

Actually, if LuMax is anywhere near me, I doubt the landscaper has a garage. Guy I used for 8 years at my last house was in a small apt the whole time. Think he has a house now, so maybe he has a garage too.

He's been taking care of this property for many years before I purchased it from the original owner. He always helps me out with projects when I ask, so this deal was just for him.

Heck of a generous gesture, shame he didn't want it.

It's a really nice old thing.

I found a beautiful Starrett 924 last week. The vise is in great condition and has most of the original paint. All I need is the elusive 923 1/2 to fill the set.6badce9ab93aba0caba6b16449e3c75d.jpgbfc354dcbf0c5b2e3b323fd97c336f60.jpg
