My entire garage and machine shop are radiant heated so I had concerns about drilling and bolting down my shop equipment. Solution was to wall mount my small equipment.

Recycled some tubing and the old grinder stand to fabricate my dual grinder stand.

Wanted the same setup for my small disc sander so Fab'd up an angle iron frame and painted to match.

Freshened up my grinders and sander before mounting.

Effective way to wall mount my small equipment allowing for very easy cleanup underneath and keep floor clutter minimized.

I like that, easy to sweep. I try to put everything on wheels.

What did you use one the inside of your roll-up doors? Looks like bubble insulation. How is it attached? Does it make a difference? Lots of questions, but very interested to do the same to mine, but just don’t know about how to do it.

Its the door vendor supplied self adhesive silver backed foam insulation. I'm pretty sure you can purchase this product in 3 foot width rolls at most big box stores.

View media item 107280
I've had my 3 overhead doors for almost 3 years now and they get used daily with no adhesion issues on the insulation.

I don't know what kind of R value it adds but I've been told between R8-R12. I live in Vancouver BC so we don't see much sub zero days plus my shop is attached with radiant heat. The huge bonus is the silver foil aids in reflective light underneath cars.

Common dead space is the small gap between overhead doors. My solution to maximize efficiency and store jackstands off the ground was this simple metal wall storage unit I fabricated from angle iron.
I like you thoughts and your fabrication skills. I used the space above my aircompressor for my jackstands, but I have the same area and will have to give it some thought.

Not like I invented or planned this but I love my cubby shelf I picked up at a garage sale several years ago for unusual stuff that doesn't fit have a particular tool drawer. Fits the rustic workshop thing I was going for with the garage too.

Where did the SR71 come from? 3D print?

I've always liked fold out work tables to maximize useable floor space in any room or trailer I've designed so I knew I wanted several areas in my new shop to utilize these functional tables.

Made a simple 2 x 6 frame I fastened to 3/4 backing plywood

View media item 107288
I had 2 leftover New Age stainless counter tops I would use on this table design and attached with a long piano hinge.

View media item 107288

Mounted the table flush to gain the extra 5 inches of useable table area when folded out plus give me a small area to store items when the table is folded down

View media item 107290
Painted the frame to match my hoists and the backing board white to maximize light reflection for future storage of squares and longer rulers.

View media item 107289
Welded up and painted some more simple angle iron arms to mount with the same piano hinge.

View media item 107292
View media item 107293
Just welded a nut to one side and threaded left over cabinet adjuster feet as my adjustable height table rests.

View media item 107294
When folded down it allows maximum useable floor space in this area of my garage while allowing storage of long or awkward measuring devices.

View media item 107297
Makes for a clean solid work table in this car work area of my shop.

View media item 107295
The arms fold away when closed and a quick adjustment of the nylon covered feet allow quick leveling of this table.

Great project - was thinking of a similar folding bench to use as a welding table.

(and would love to see more of the FF)

Does anyone have good storage ideas on getting a large wheelbarrow out of the way, possibly stored on a wall? I have this pretty large composite style one and it takes up a ton of floor space.

I will try and remember to take a picture tonight. I have a wall that the width is just about perfect, that if you stand it on end, with the face toward the wall, the handles fit flush. Then you can use the space between the handles. For me, I have car ramps. I was going to use a bungee cord to keep it flush, but the way it fit I did not have to. Not hanging it makes using it and putting it up a lot easier.

I've seen wheel barrows stored on heavy "hooks" screwed into the wall, they still take up a fair chunk of space, I've seen a few folks use the bins to store cords and ropes. Here in Michigan we have bottle/can returns so allot of folks use the wheel barrow for empties.

I’ve gotten a good sized wheelbarrow up out of the way using a cheapie rope pulley hoist system picked up from Harbor Freight decades ago. The rope from the block attaches to the wheelbarrow at the horizontal cross member in front of the wheel. She pulls up along on the front wall of the garage, into the rafters up past the joists, way above any usable garage space for regular use. Those very few times a year I need it, only need to undo the brake and lower it down. Wash and repeat when done.

That a great idea. Something like a bicycle hoist?

Your tape measure mount reminds me of how I used to have mine in my old garage. Lately I've been storing mine in a "vintage" (junky old toy) dump truck bed. But I've been thinking of going back to something like yours. Apologies for the old/bad photos:

DIY pic below (borrowed from Google and the style I'll be using to store mine on the side of the shed). Some versions use hanging hooks that can be spun out of the way to release. They also sell wheel Barrow hanging brackets for like $13 online.

Bogie's post of the wheel barrow bracket made me wonder if Amazon had a tape measure bracket?

Found this and in keeping with thread title, "Neat Storage Ideas" I thought I should post this link:

Should you go the DIY route, here's another borrow from Pinterest. I plan on a similar style rack for my speed squares, combination square, rules, and tape. Haven't found any off-the-shelf type holders that will store all the items I want.

That looks good, Bogie!

I actually don't own a speed square.....and I don't know why! I own a larger and smaller sliding square and two framing squares. See, I guess I need one so I can use the DIY approach!

@MattN03 I was think something like @Bogie1632 did or maybe a bungee cord. But once I flipped it on its nose, it was just flat against the wall. So that is how I left it.
Sorry for being late on the pictures, did not make it out into the shop till last night.

Like many here I've been planning to get organized "someday". The plan is in constant conflict with my desire to pack more **** into my Blivit Garage. One of the problems was the piles of empty containers piled up that were to be used for the previously mentioned organization.

i-n9SzvFq-X2.jpg

Earlier this year I decided that the empty space above the garage door track would be a good spot to put a shelf with these containers on it. I used shelf brackets underneath where I could on the left and a couple of brackets above on the right side where there wasn't room underneath. I printed up some labels and started clearing out some of the junk drawers. The shelf is wide enough to go two deep on containers, and makes use of the limited space there because of my ceiling being only 8 feet high. Eventually I'll further sort and organized the contents of some of these containers into HF storage containers and build a roll around rack to hold them in. These cat treat containers are fairly handy since they have a grab handle built in and are square instead of round so they don't waste too much space.

Wow, fartymarty, your cat(s) are eating you out of house and home. LOL.

Those containers on the new shelf sure do the job nice and neat. And the containers don't appear to be stuffed to the top, so there is room to grow.

I'll be watching your posts more carefully from now on, I seriously need some of that neat, orderly, organization to rub off on me.

I've only tasted the ones from Sam's club but it appears the ones from Costco are made by the same folks? Regardless there are alternatives to cat treats.
The cat treat containers are a bit larger but the caramels do taste much better.

We have three cats, but one of them is a 17 lb. Maine **** and she eats 90% of the treats.

As a long time reader here, I've seen some amazing shop organization ideas covering the gamut from throw **** on the floor and see what floats to the top at one end to build a custom fabricated container for each tool bit.

I fall in the middle, as I assume most of you do.

In the past I've constructed large shared workshops (around 3000sf) with machining and engine building tools for my friends and I. It's a lot of work.

I've since gone back to basics and am just doing my own work out of a two-car garage. Organization is necessary just due to shortage of space.

Organizing is hard.

Since moving into this house three years ago, I've created some main areas of the shop.
  • Stairwell for cords and outdoor tools
  • Long wall with high bench for hand tools and frequently used chemicals and other non-tools
  • Opposite wall for lathe and motorcycle storage (I have four in this garage)
  • Back wall for metal work with vise, grinder, some stock, cutting/filing tools, etc
  • Near garage door for library, clock, stereo, tool charging
  • Center floor near bench for bike lift. Can be moved out for larger projects
  • Back alley for wood work. I hate getting sawdust in my shop.
  • Small loft above bench for motorcycle and antique truck parts (one bin per vehicle)

I made the benches and wall organizers with plywood and stick lumber. I soaked everything in used motor oil to seal and protect when done. Yes, my shop stank to high heaven for a week afterward. But, I've used this approach in the past with good results. In other shops I've made metal-capped bench tops but didn't go to the trouble here.
