Hi guys, i’m from west of France. I allready have York, FPU and Gressel vises. I was looking every days for a Wilton vise since 3 years but can’t found it in France when i saw this one!
For something like 50$ so i called instantly and gave 120$ for it. I take my car for a 12 hour round trip with my dog 😅
It hasn’t been used so much!!! And has been made in July 1953
I’ll blast it and need to find the good color. Any ideas or exemple? Something like a green or blue i think

I think i’m lucky!
Thank you

From what I've seen, a drive through the French countryside is worth every bit of $120. So the vise was free!

Posted this in the garage sale thread but forgot about this thread. My $20 Marketplace find on New Year’s Day.

Wilton 930 key is stamped 6-46.

Looks to be all original paint. I’m going to try and clean it up gently and leave it. Maybe one day I’ll get lucky and find a swivel base for it

Quite the size difference next to my 400.

An Athol 324-1/2 is up for $150 near me.

'Nice' jaws, no welds, orig. paint (that I'll strip and re-paint), some rusty junk on it, but certainly not frozen, slide has not been used as an anvil, no pipe jaws (where DO they go!?), no grinder/hammer trauma.

I'm thinking of snagging it for a friend as a gift (best kind of friends to have: they like vises).

I think the guy might go 125.

Is that an OK price? I think it is, but cash is not so loose these days...

Thanks!

Congrats. Nice score on an old school C2!
Rust-Oleum Hammered Verde Green seems to be as close as anything in matching the OEM color.

Agree with Shiftless. That’s an awesome find. I’d clean it up and keep it original.

Athol 624 1/2 makes my Reed 104R seem small.

I like these Columbia area Craftsman vises. Found a quick release woodworking version and painted to match my existing little 3.5" bench vise. Wish I had a lathe to make a new handle, but managed to make something similar to the original out of some oak dowels. Still need to add some wood jaw liners but already been a big help in the garage.

If you put O-Rings between your handle ends and the metal, the ends will stay on better. And your fingers will thank you one day when you aren’t paying attention.

TailGunner:
I bought it, did a a quick tune-up and gave it to him today. Didn't paint it, just cleaned it up and oiled it a bit.

He's like me: functionality is king, and a fancy vise would be outta place in his one-man-for-35-years CNC shop.

He was very happy and quite touched (well, as much as a 'metal-shavings for breakfast' kinda guy can be).

I really like the Athol zero-back-lash screw design. I might even retrofit one on my150# Amer. Scale vise.

Nice to see these vices fixed up and preserved. A vice is the one shop thing you use about every day.

I had a couple Columbian woodworker vises and the original handle was a metal pipe with caps.

Here's a couple of pics for ideas.

I for one will miss the postings here by ssdave.

Sure, he was opinionated but he must have gone too far elsewhere on GJ.
He is now banned.

Anybody know what brand or model this is? It's for sale locally for $100 and they don't have a description.

I thought as much. I was intrigued because it was local.
In the meantime I've seen a Wilton 4" bullet for $100 and a Palmgren MJ 5" rotating for $200

I had to buy a vise in the first week of the new year even if it’s been repaired. Has anyone ever seen a Parker double swivel vise broken in another place? I would love to eventually find an unbroken rotating jaw. Everyone I’ve ever seen broken has been broken and repaired in the same place.

Unfortunately, yes, I have...but luckily I also am friends with a welding maestro. Sadly though, the folks who tried "repairing" this one before didn't do so great and while this is repaired, she'll probably be enjoying a rather gentle retirement. He told me that he was having issues with the metal having hardened or crystallized something something, it was awhile back, but if he'd kept going he was afraid he'd be doing more harm than good.

Beautiful vise, nice score. As others have said, "Rustoleum Verde Green" seems to be the best match for the old green Wilton used to us.

I got an Iron Fortis

I've love to find a nice Fortis vise one day, but they all seem to be (mostly) on the other side of the pond.

It's your basic Asian import. Probably not a bad vise for general use, but it's not going to tickle too many folks' fancy.

Hate to be a bother, but never mind on that Palmgren. I see they a cheap made-in-China **** these days. I'm in the market since my Wilton 643-1/2 is having issues and is a bit light-duty for what I need.

Did find a Wilton A9450 for sale for $285. Looks to be in good shape other than a hideous paint job. Is that a good price?

I always fear the seller is covering something up with a **** paintjob like this. If it was cheaper, maybe. But feels a little high.

Found my first Wilton of the new year and it was worth waiting for. This is a Wilton 600 with 6” jaws and a 164 lb total weight. The original paint and sticker are in great shape for a 32 year old vise. This one has smooth jaws which I’ve never seen on a 6” Wilton before.012f3e78f52545244074869c14bf3ba1.jpgd66a063f52c9e375f976908ef37eca34.jpg78f5685c7c0c2bb737252c8f99a0f6ff.jpg

Just for interest, and not Wilton, but the parent York, and not bullets, but a later flat end - someone's selling 8 clean York 80L (3 1/4 in) vises with swivel bases, under $25 each. --on UK bay - mounting bolts thrown just in case price is a little high.

That seems like an amazing deal. I paid more than the asking price for ALL 8 of those for this earlier one pictured here in between my 2 baby bullets. This is my only York. There certainly is a family resemblance.

Recently started a re-fresh on a Prentiss 22. The swivel jaw has moved maybe 4mm. That's about 1mm per 20 hammer blows, I estimate.

Sharing this for general interest, but also, if anyone has undertaken this process and has a cautionary tale, I'm listening.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but sometimes reversing and going the other way helps. it s"works" any penetrant in deeper and allows the rust to crumble.

PB is an OK penetrant, certainly better than liquid wrench, but Kroil or a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone works better, you have to shake the 50/50 mix before every application as it WILL separate, and due to the Acetone be careful what you store it in..

Thank you, Outlaw, much appreciated. I'm going to try the ATF/Acetone mix.

I'm also building a jig to hold the piece firmly, so I'm not losing so much energy to wobble.

Boring, OR (yes, it's called Boring!)
SCH -
B E W A R E ! Breaking loose the swivel jaw on my Amer. Scale 6" vise cost me a broken left arm (end of the radius). The big chain wrench I was using to turn the jaw back-n-forth slipped off and I did a FOOSH (Fell On Out Stretched Hand).

But, you're prob'ly smarter'n me, so my warning is not needed.
:)

BTW: After I had wrenched it back-n-forth a bunch of times to no avail, I then knocked out the cross-pin that holds the jaw in the body (it goes cross-wide through the body and fits in a rounded groove in the 2" dia. pin the jaw swivels on to retain the jaw).

Then I put a 5/8" bolt w/coupling nut on it INSIDE the body and used it as a jack to push the jaw up and out. Worked like a charm! (even with a broken arm that, at that point, I though was still just a 'very bad sprain')
: - )

'Course, the Prentiss may have a different jaw mounting scheme, I'm no Prentiss Master.
YMMV
