In the pic that Smitty posted, the triangular gusset was at the tail end of the vise for a counter balance effect.
With a base that has a bottom plate that big and with a total weight of 725 pounds, it probably doesn’t matter that much.

Agree, just wondering why.

So the talk of a scale model train stand reminded me of an incomplete "project" I have had for some time, but never got to:

This CI base I picked up at an estate or yard sale some time back and always thought it would be for a small vise stand. I't almost a perfect 1/4 scale to the 2" Baby...

I need to either make the adapter plate thick enough to clear te square boss he stand ha,s or grind the boss off... Strip and de-rust (rusty underneath/inside) - Make that adapter (I'm thinking 1/2" plate?) and its easy after that?

Oddly the download of the pic won't load? claims its a jpg, but two different things won't open it... :dunno:

My son's 3d printer is limited to about 5X5X5, so, theoretically it could do a 1/8 scale stand and a 1" vise jaw would be needed to simulate an 8" RR vise..

Downloaded and opened for me.:dunno:

Try right click on it and open it in another tab. Then try to download that, sometimes helps.

I am using a laptop, not a phone.

Here is my Athol 624N. I bought it 10 days ago on OfferUp for $30.
Don't have a drag link socket (I've ordered one since) so had to resort to the huge washer with large screwdriver through the washer trick.

Other than the terrible rust and neglect, pretty decent condition. Hasn't been used as an anvil like most Athol vises are with their very tall static jaw side body casting.

Used schedule 1120 3/4" pvc technique to easily remove and replace cotter pin.

You did a fantastic job on that Athol. Is that a really dark greenish blue? Is that a stock color? Dark Hunter Green maybe? It’s hard to tell on an electronic screen. But it’s really handsome.

Hoorn: That is a very nice job on your 624.
On my computer, the color looks like a very deep dark blue. It is a perfect color in my eye.

Can you tell us what the color is? Was it an enamel? Brush on or spray or rattle-can?
Looks too smooth and thick for the typical rattle-can paint..

Kudos!

Had a good day yesterday picking up four Baby Bullets on various PowerArms. The 303 stand is huge and weighs in at 15lbs. The seldom seen Low-Boy 311 is in beautiful condition and the bullet on top has some of the original sticker. I got these all from the same seller and they all came out of a laboratory. 027cbfb3c62c58e592eb664818e8bab1.jpg

Appreciate it very much, Shiftless, Jayman and PierceA. That is Rustoleum satin midnight blue. I used Rustoleum "Professional" red primer underneath. Oil based white paint pen.
I laid it on pretty good, 3 coats, then didn't touch it for 72 hours. I had a pretty good dust free spot for it.

Today’s score delivered to me by the seller. It started with just asking about the stand and then next thing you know I got 5 vises as well.

That’s another amazing haul. Is that a Craftsman 5197? Clearly one of the all time favorite series of vises around these parts.
All of those big guys seem to have been well cared for and not abused.
Another of the legendary all at once scores here on this thread.

Hey guys- I made a short video tour of my 8 inch vises (11 in total). I probably should have cleaned up a little bit first, but the link is below if you’re interested.

That vise stand is one of the coolest machine/vise/anything stand I have ever seen.
Gorgeous curves!

Bagged - That stand is super cool! Great pick up!

Thanks all. I wanted to buy the stand and then deals started getting added to it. And then more on top of that. The craftsman is the 4”. I think model 5196. I probably have to add some weight and a wider base to the bottom of the stand as it’s a little narrow and side to side Is not the most stable. I can also always just bolt the top back to the wall as there are mounting holes already.

Boring, OR (yes, it's called Boring!)
V I S E ,
That video might get flagged for being VISE ****.

My grumpy, jealous side says: "Do you ever USE any of them?!" (Other than for holding another vise while you work on it)

: - )

Lovely collection of iron, engineering, manufacturing, and . . . COLLECTING!

Bagged and Vise: you two inspired me to put a few of my Parker's together on one steel table. And to try to stack 'em like Bagged did.
I have another 5 or 6 Parkers not on the table.. not enough room at least so each one can be seen. Or glimpse of each one.
I may use a longer work bench to stretch out a lineup of all the different vises later on.

Vise: your video is nice, thanks for taking the time to make it and post it. I like the bases you have found for many of your collection.
I have several bases that I've purchased to put some of my collection on, But right now floor space is very limited.. I really need to do a purge!! So the bases have not been put under any vises yet. I do have 6 large grinders or polisher/buffers though. Several bought just for the base, but ended up using them for the grinder/buffer mounts.. I've found that de-burring wheels are a godsend for cleaning up the handles, meatballs and slides on these neglected vises.

Below is an 8" Reed on a working stand that showed up on Craigslist near me and was sold the next morning. I think I was the 4th caller on it.
Ya can't buy 'em all !!

Vise: what do you use to move around the big 275#-300#+ vises? To put them on the racks or shelves? Do you separate them so they are the static and dynamic and move them then reassemble them? I have an electric baby forklift but no floorspace right now to maneuver it in.. and you look like you too are getting limited on floor space.
