Radar, your "mystery" Ken tool cracked me up. I look at it, and say it's a multi-size wrench for internal square head fasteners. You found it called a drain plug wrench.

I've been amusing myself recently, observing how so many people/companies name a tool based on a specific item it'll be used on. My recent favorite is looking at how many ways hook/pick sets get renamed as "o-ring removal tools" or "cotter pin removal tools" etc. It's a hook on a handle, until marketers get involved!!!

Mike

Vintage multi-wrench was my first thought, too. But plugs in general and drain plugs in particular are a natural fit.

Just as necessity is the mother of invention, marketing is the process of getting that invention not only to the right market, but to create a "need" in as many ancillary and tertiary markets as possible.

Oh, I understand, it just amuses me.

50+ years on this planet, first time I ever heard the phrase "cotter pin removal tool" was at Lowe's a few weeks ago (standing near the tool department employee when he answered the call). My brain immediately jumped to "Why don't they just use a hook" but I said to myself, I have time to kill (we were waiting for the forklift), so I looked it up. Sure enough, a hook tool, proudly under the name of cotter pin tool.

Never too old to learn something new, I guess. Although in this case, I think it's the other way around. Are people really too busy to think about what they're doing? If so, this caller probably already had an o-ring tool at home...

I picked these items up today at an Estate Sale. The tools and such were $10. The 6 inch Crescent Wrench and small Pipe Wrench are J. P Danielson. The Garbage Cans were $2 each.

Nothing today; went to the new local FM and they has 13 sellers (rained quite a bit the prior two days, but that's gone now) so I'd bet some sellers skipped.

Nothing for me today, as I am packing up for a long road trip starting on Monday. And there will hopefully be some tool scores on the trip!

I plan to hit the Quakertown flea tomorrow. Two of my other favorites are still closed until April 3. Hoping a few local community yard sales occur soon, too.

Thinking about the examples of specific-task-named tools, another possibility could be the manufacturers’ wanting to limit liability for damage (both to tool and to whatever you use it on), if the tool is used for other tasks.

I didn't do any looking this week. Last week I stopped at a moving sale on my way to repairing my bulldozer. Not much interesting, but I did buy a few things.

8 rubber trucker's straps, the good, heavy-duty version - $5.00
A Union 6-drawer tool box. Three across the top, 3 wide drawers. A little rusty and a cobbled-on hasp for the top lid - $5.00

No photos of these as I put the straps away and disassembled the box to clean it up.

The contents of the box are in the photo:

The box of 10 5/16NC helicoils was worth the purchase!
The Mac scraper is handy.
So is the Exacto knife.
the 3/8" steel rod is painted gray, but has no discernable use.
The Wet Set is a repair kit for inflatables, sadly long past its shelf life.
The pointed thing to the left of the pencil has an 8-32 phillips flat head screw for attachment. I have no idea what it does! :headscrat
Above the rubber feet is a 3/8" inverted flare plug.

I've posted progress photos of the tool box in the Vintage Toolboxes thread. A photo of the label is the second one here.

The rubber feet are from a wire office "in basket". They fit in the square mesh.

The pointed thing looks like the male part of a cabinet door "push touch" latch. Like you see when there is no handle on the door. I bet this was for a very sturdy steel office utility cabinet or a copy machine door.

Estate sale in Georgia last Friday. Hauled off three drawers full of tools for $80. Lots of Craftsman V and VV, a bunch of G, plus a whole bunch of other USA made tools - Thorsen, Proto, Plomb, Blackhawk, SK, and a handful of Snap-on plus others. I pulled out all the Taiwanese, Chinese, and India stuff and sold that pile for $35 so I'm in this lot for $45.

Nice haul and a great price for your off-shore stuff!

This was the discard pile. Apparently the guy that bought them had his car broken into and his tools stolen so he was really happy with this lot.

Great haul PH!

Look like there is a Plvmb ratchet in the mix? 1/4" or 9/16th's WF?

The breaker next to it - does it have a 3/8 broached into the end of the grip handle? (Allows its us as an extension - don't use it to ad an extension as a cheater!

My friend and GJ member Shiftless and I discussed a local estate sale when we spotted it on Craigslist. I’m not quite ready to go to one but he was interested in a vise so I asked him to check if there was anything that I might like. He sent me a picture of an early S-K box filled with tools and ended up grabbing it for me. It is a early ‘30s set and came with several of the original tools. I had found most of the sockets for that set a few years ago but never had a box. The last picture is after some cleanup and adding the missing items.

It's a Plomb WF-21 ratchet.

Here is the end of the breaker bar, but I think they used it more as a hammer. I can't make out the stamp on it.

I found a 9HP Craftsman Snowblower at the curb around the corner for scrap metal pickup. We loaded it in the van and brought it home.

It's a 2003 model with a 9HP Tecumseh. It had a electric start on it originally but that's been removed. It started on the first pull and everything seems to work. I need to go thru it to make sure everything is ok and then decide what to do with it. I have 2 small 2-stage Ariens' and now this larger machine. Keep the larger machine or sell it . . .

Cheers

Jim

You know if you keep the big craftsman you won’t get any snow to amount to anything. If you sell it, you’ll get 2 feet overnight.....

Here is my day’s haul, from a moving sale we spotted on our way out to meet my sister. It really didn’t mesh well with our plans, but times are really hard for finding tools. I wasn’t expecting much, as it was at a warehouse, only signs put out late last night. Found some great sewing stuff, including three pairs of Wiss shears, handles down, plus a pair of Clauss shears, handle up. Hand full of Craftsman and other tools, including three crows foot sockets, a Blackhawk 4” adjustable wrench, unknown if old or new yet, Barcalo and Diamond pliers, drum sanders, a box of Ticonderoga made in USA pencils, an Arkansas stone, looks translucent. Couple of under sink hoses, a 12v test light, and a spanner type wrench. And hopefully the best find, a vise swivel lock handle, hope it fits my Simplex 350.

Jim, You **** for that free blower! Even if it needs more work later, it's unbelievable that it started right up after being left out for junk!

Thanks for the mention, Don

I love it when I find a good deal on something somebody has been looking for.

Even though I was 18th in line at quarter to nine, 15 minutes early, by the time they let me in and I got to the garage, the only vise in the place was still there bolted to the bench with square headed bolts. The owner of the house died and his grand daughter’s husband was helping with the sale by watching over the garage. He and I rummaged around and found tools in the garage to remove the vise. (Naturally, like most of you regulars here, I carry a few tools in the car for such purposes for back up just in case)

After a quick phone consultation, I picked up that vintage SK socket wrench box for Don.

For myself, I grabbed this Columbian vise and a couple of mostly full cans of 3 in 1 oil, a set of ball end hex keys, and a barely ever used Vaughn flat pry bar.

steaks, thanks for the ID on the pointy thing. I knew what the rubber feet came from, and that is why I didn't ask about them.

Everybody, those are some nice finds this weekend! Perhaps the improving weather will bring out more sales!

Nice haul. I see a pair of barber scissors and a classic stinky acetate handle Craftsman stubby screwdriver. I have that exact same model. You’re set for life in the category of upholsterer’s shears. I have a pair of those Wiss ones. Cleaning and sharpening is easy and they will work great for cutting down large sheets of sandpaper in between upholstery jobs. :)

If that vise swivel lockdown fits, you can send it my way for polishing if you’re not set up for that. Here is the lockdown assembly from that Columbian I polished up last night.

Thanks for the offer, I was watching your work on that as I am poking about the red radial bristle purchase. My orders will go in late today. I have to do a bit of dripped paint removal before hitting with the expensive brush.

I have a few other bigger pairs of shears already, can’t leave good ones on the ground for cheap. Once you learn to sharpen them, anything is possible. The barber shears, not so much, those are going to a pro.

When you get old, you’ll need those barber scissors to trim your eyebrows. :bounce:

My modest haul from Quakertown today. $30 went quick, after weeks of eBay-gazing. Gotta get my proper game on before April, LOL.

Jim NG ***** for a running snow throwah curb pickup!

SWMBO and I went out to a family run estate sale 5 minutes away, the first one together in a while. We picked up a few garden tools for my daughter and son-in-law up in Maine, who are new homeowners as of a month ago.

We also went through the basement workshop. It was the second day of the sale, and the son said lots of tools went out the door yesterday. SWMBO found a rack of clothes and picked a few items off for herself. I puttered around the workshop, chatting with the son (we were the only ones there). In the next room, the son showed me the Craftsman circular saw, so I decided to have a Mike Wolfe moment (a la the American Pickers show) and talked through Craftsman logos to date the saw and how to determine its value. I looked it up on Ebay, and showed him one that had sold for $80 recently. After we chatted some more, I offered him $40, and he countered with $45. The deal was done.

Unfortunately, I'm out of practice with negotiating a bundle, and paid $100 for everything in the pics. I'll make it all back, I'm sure, but I overpaid by about $20, I think.

Craftsman Heritage-logo Circular saw, 207.25602, with case and original cord. I think it also has a Heritage-era blade.

Craftsman variable speed Auto Scroller jigsaw with guide!

Millers Falls No 118 breast drill, two speed with level(!), missing chest brace and side handle.

Knu-vise clamping pliers
2x Spear Chinese-made bonsai scissors
Bell System wire cutters
Blue-Point PR-12A snap ring pliers
Craftsman 3/8" combo wrench
The 3/4" end of a William's Superrench DOE
Forged Select Steel DBE
No 10 Stillson-style pipe wrench, made in West Germany
Enerpac Hammerblow cable cutter (this may pay for the whole day)
Zim valve lapping tool
NIB wire brush
No-name tilting machinist vise
Craftsman crowntop edge guide and contour finger for a router
Flat bottom shovel, small spading fork, cultivator and sprinkler787e3f0e5f9410cf2f7a581f69cd185a.jpgfe799a2076ac81c3123305d7476d698b.jpg6d93acc1db88650eee9f51a3eb3d7968.jpg69580f274fe4e24ddf6e629c880791ec.jpg7218e4c3c0016e453b1d562750b3fb61.jpg9e613e712125611cf33276a2dc7ad39c.jpgf29db51801bf68eac631f982172cbe03.jpg

Some scores from this weekend’s Needville, TX city-wide yard sale:

A Thomas Air Pac compressor - $10. The guy said it didn’t build air. I took the head off and turns out a mud dauber had fouled the reed valves. A few minutes with a wire brush and it’s up and running. These units retail for over $700.

An OTC snap ring pliers - $1. Model 7301 retails for over $100.

Coleman 4,000 watt generator - $20. The guy bought it for Y2K (remember that fiasco!). Ran it for 2 hours and it’s been in his garage for the last 20 years.

Hilti cordless drill/hammer drill - $60. This is a real tool. 2 batteries and the charger. The batteries have plenty life left as well. Forget about Dewilt, Milwaukee, B & D, Craftsman etc. This will twist those backwards.

Mrs Duddly: that desk lamp is not coming home with you.

$3 later....

Nice, got love a Dazor at $3. To hijack slightly has anyone "upgraded " a Dazor to LED bulbs? Do they make an affordable LED conversion bulb? We have 48" ones in out fixture in the kitchen which was worth the cost.
