Had a fairly weird day of picking today with 4 stops at area pawn shops, 2 of whom insisted that I take my finds for free! I guess it pays to NOT be a Snap-on guy but to separate the Snap-on sockets out of the multiple containers I sorted. Either they appreciated the hookup, or they were just taking pity on the poor sap sifting sockets for an hour plus...

At any rate, Stop 1 results:
Plvmb 1222 11/16 Combo
Plvmb 5416 1/2 x 1/2
Proto 275 6.5" slipjoint pliers
Proto 280 10" slipjoint pliers
Proto 5424 3/4 x 1/2
Proto 5422 11/16 x 1/2
Proto 5416 1/2 x 1/2
Proto 5421 21/32 x 1/2
Craftsman 414-4 T15 driver
Challenger 1069 Spinner/Extension
SK Wayne 7/16 x 1/2 (6 point)
SK Wayne 3/4 x 1/2
SK Wayne 40970 1/4" drive ratchet
SK 1/2 x 1/2 (6 point)
Bell Systems Metal Case (Thorsen) Any ideas on what this might have contained? Dimensions: 8.5"L, 2.25"W, 1.5"D

Total $7

Stop 2:
Proto 4769 1/4 Spinner/extension
Proto 3227 1/2 - 7/16 DOE
Proto 5428 7/8 x 1/2
Plvbm 1125 DBE 1/2 - 7/16 "Pebble"
Plvmb 5418 9/16 x 1/2

Free, and thanked me for being honest when I handed him 3 various-size Snappy sockets. Maybe they are used to random Snap-on winding up in pockets:wtf:

Stop 3:
SK 40954 1/4 Spinner
Unidentified Pin Handle/Tommy Bar

Free. This one I'm about certain was due to pity. I was there for at least 45 minutes and those 2 items were the grand total of what I could find...

Stop 4:
Proto 5449 1/2 drive Ratchet
Proto 5414-H 7/16 x 1/2 (Hex)
Proto 5414 7/16 x 1/2 (12pt)
Proto 5418 9/16 x 1/2 (12pt)
Proto 5218-S 1/2 x 3/8 double square
Proto 5012 3/8 x 3/8 deep
SK 308 8mm x 3/8
SK 40909 9/32 x 1/4
SK Wayne 40906 3/16 x 1/4
King **** MSW 304 5/16BSF 1/4W
SR 3/4 x 1/2

Total $11 which I was quite happy with as the 5449 was tagged at $19

If anyone is looking for either the King **** BSF/Whitworth or the SR, let me know... I'm fairly certain I saw someone (Don?) working on an SR set. Let me know and I'll send 'em out.

Best regards,
John

Scored 2 Wilton vises from a moving/estate sale. $50 for the C-2 & $20 for the 2" baby!

One thing that never goes out of style is getting a boatload of tools for next to nothing. You ****, Ryan!!

The picture posted by the Estate Sale company showed a sorry looking Husky tool chest with drawers akimbo and partially opened. I was the first one in the shed and had just wiped the drool off my chin when one of the staff came in to see if I needed help. I said I do, and asked him what he would take for all the tools minus the chest, rusty files and bent screwdrivers. He forced the drawers open, took a good look and named his price. Not wanting to seem too eager, I paused for six seconds and then agreed.

I’ll have to break things into groups.

One of the first things out of the chest was a AAMCO No.1 Small Bore Hone Box filled with everything but hones. It looks like the contents were subjected to an acidic atmosphere at some time. The ¼” spinner deteriorated completely. It looks like it may have been Snap-on given the other contents, but no telling for sure.

Very nice weather here lately. Today there were several decent sales. The best one for me was an estate in a nearby town. The house was on the edge of town and had been a small farm. The first two photos are from this sale.

Photo #1 is a Dearborn (Ford) X11-60 disc harrow that mounts on the 3-point hitch of a 1939-1960's Ford tractor. I have two of these tractors so it is useful to me. I have an earlier version that tows behind, but this one lifts off the ground to maneuver or back up. I'll get some use from it. I had to return after the sale with my trailer to pick it up. I brought one of my tractors and just backed the tractor up to it and hooked it up. No damage and the disc bearings spin freely. :3gears:

Photo #2 is the other stuff from the sale. I spent $80.00 all told.
1/3 HP electric motors, one Dayton and one Westinghouse. Both run smooth and quiet.
Qwikwerks 8 pound sledge hammer (#75 "Nevada" pattern) with a short handle.
Plumb 4 pound hewing hatchet. This is a small broadaxe and is flat on one side. Just the PLUMB in the rectangle, and no USA marks.
Two small file handles, one new.
P&C 2736 1-1/8" combo, "100" series
New hammer handle
Two small kerosene cans. No rust or dings, and they still have the caps on the spouts! A little dirty, but they will clean up nicely. I'll be giving them to a favorite flea market vendor that keeps an eye out for things I look for. :D

The first sale I attended was very near my house. The sellers had had several sales in the last year, with not much interesting stuff and somewhat high prices. This time was different. They were packing to move to Arizona, and brought out a lot of fresh items. They were willing to negotiate price from the moment they opened the sale.

Photo #3 shows what I got for $45.00:
Snap-On @1816 punch
Wizard punch
Unmarked tire iron
Bonney Streamline 1112 3/8 combo
Bon-E-Con ZEB18 9/16 combo
P&C 2716 1/2 combo
Billings diamond-B 1128 7/16 Vitalloy obstruction DOE
Cornwell AW1010 5/16 ignition DOE
MAC S156 10MM specialty wrench
Craftsman -VV- 1/4 dr extension
Indestro Polygon DBE 3/4 x 25/32. My first Polygon. Perhaps a "2-fer" since Alloy Artifacts says these were sold by Western Auto as a cheaper brand.
Blackhawk 15942 DBE 15/16 x 1"
Craftsman geometric-C circle-U 1/2 dr 1/2 12-point socket
P&C 3018 3/8 dr. "9-16" 12-point. Dash instead of a slash for the fraction.
Aircraft Specialties extra long screw starter.
Fairmount 1036 body spoon
Fairmount 1050 body spoon
unmarked body dolly. Fairmount?
21/32 ACE HSS drill bit
1" Hanson HS drill bit
Craftsman external torx socket set. Made in USA. Never opened!
Lectrolite 720 lug wrench
Small socket box. 6-11/16 long, 3-1/8 wide, and 1-1/8 tall. Reddish inside, with paint worn off the outside.
Missing is a Proto #250 snap ring pliers, I'll show them later.

Second sale was less than a mile from the first, both rural and between my home and town. Not much at this one.
Photo #4 shows the $7.00 purchase:
1/3 HP GE motor with arbor adapter and grinding wheel. The cord was rotten and shorted out. With a good cord, it starts right up and runs smooth and quiet!
2 dustpans for one of my shops
B&D Powershot stapler. Works perfectly, but ugly!
Two counter brushes to use with the dustpans

Photo #5 is a sale in my town that I stopped at on the way to the Estate sale mentioned above. Ad said tools, but there wasn't much there. I got away for $1.50!
Lodge 8" cast iron pan.
P&C 6211 1/2 drive ratchet

Also showing the Proto 250 Snap Ring and Horseshoe Washer pliers I should have included in Photo #3.

Edit to add: Ryan ***** big!

Thanks for the offer. I pick up the mysterious SR tools whenever I see them. I’m not sure I would call them a collection, exactly.

Well, Old Radar and Provincial getting an early start to this weekend's suckage!!!

I love that you bought the disc set with the intention of using it. I hate to see that stuff rusting into the ground as "yard art" typically by people who never actually grew anything in their lives.

$29 at Jake’s flea this morning. Watched a pre-Stanley Champion exposed-screw vise sell for $20. I have some of their quilting C-clamps and cabinet latches. Not heart-broken, but the guy said he was going to mount it on his truck bumper. I wish he’d bought the 5” Olympia versavise instead.

EDIT - $11 more at Quakertown flea. And now I’ll be able to fix and get my son’s girlfriend’s brother’s drafting desk out of MrsLS’s living room.

Lessor, is that a Bonney off-set flathead? I found one that had been sadly ground down to fit something, but that one looks pristine.

But it is always interesting to see what others will drag home.

Interesting pieces, LS. What is that rod just to the right of the hammer heads and lock?

BMW - it is Bonney indeed!

OR - I’m going to give it a closer look, but by my preliminary impression, it is a bitbrace extension. I may have another somewhere.

Well, since everybody shows big things, I will add unsorted tools which are now going through quarantine in the garage since Tuesday

Was planning to get the boxes, but ended up getting also a lot of machinist tools.
For some reason I did not make a picture of Snap On C60 pliers I found while searching the brown Kennedy box for the key (no luck.... Hoped that previous owner kept it somewhere between the tools...)
The heavily oxidized breaker bar is Mustang - will try to save it.
Happy about stubby SO phillips - I already have a flat tip one in the same color which some mechanic left under the hood of my car in 1990s (at the time I was pissed as it could have caused some problems falling from the engine top inside. Thought it was a cheap screwdriver and just threw it in my toolbox : ) )

$31.50 including gas

... Originally I thought about flipping the brown Kennedy but now I am thinking about cleaning it up and organizing my smaller tap and die tools in it (in addition to all the tools which came with it...

Sure looks like it from 3000 miles away. The slim fit version, for smaller diameter auger bits

I thought I had 3 stops planned and that realized one started too late for me today, so I managed 2 planned for before my "Pre op C-19 testing" and then I have to go home and self-isolate till Tuesday AM and eye surgery (first of three)... :dunno:

So first, let me congratulate all the great finds! You guys are as usual killing it!

This first one was a good stop. lots of tools ( a little competition even though it started at 7! I passed on a BIG Mac Top box for $20 (i should have grabbed and flipped but...), I just don't have space or time to deal with it with all that is going on.

3/8 SK and a WF-8 Plomb Ratchet, A coupe of 1/2 Extensions, A proto DOE, adn a S&H :headscrat pair of needlenose pliers - I have 2 pair of "red Devil" branded pliers they made/sold, but they also sold Utica back in the day. First pair marked S&H. (Smith & Hemenway)

attachment.php

An adjustable Hole bore, that has the early Craftsman Fount usually associated with Long C, A boxed 3/4" Wire brush, some NOS Tee Nuts, and a Stanley No. 45 Molding plane (end round over)

attachment.php

And a "Box Lot" - Thorsen Box, Appears to be for a 3/8 set? Can you tell why I grabbed this? :D

attachment.php

:pimpflash

Things spread out for visibility:

Reletivly complete for sockets if a mixed bag, a few Tuen up related tools including a gapper/cleaner with a small carbon scraping blade and a well used brush... Mixed universal sockets, and some bit driver sockets.

attachment.php

Sockets were mostly Thorsen, and Craftsman with a couple of orphans, only one was a ******.

The box seems to be in fair shape, so I'll clean and populate.

attachment.php

For $30 I'm happy.

And the other stop - some $1 ea. DVD movies ("Tools" meant a dead battery drill...)

Yes - here’s my other one with it. EDIT - turned out to be Mayhew. Honestly, I don’t like the mechanism. There are two concentric but different-size square sockets that hold the bit by...I’m not really sure I understand how. A real ****** to get right, but once the bit is in, a real ****** to get it out again.
attachment.php

Other mystery of the day, combination slipjoints. “The Victor” side has a grip pattern with a diamond center, the “Kilborn & Bishop” side is smooth. The Button’s pattern wire cutter slots do not align in any position. Frankenpliers, I guess.
attachment.php

EDIT - yes, Frankenpliers. Kraeuter made “The Victor” half. Kilborn & Bishop, est1896, were bought by MooreDF and PS&W in 1937. I guess I can offer these on eBay “for parts,” LOL.

And eight push drill bits in wood tube, three spear-point bits in a spool of twine inside the wood screwtop handle of an eggbeater/hurdygurdy drill (iron frame long gone).

Estate sale today

75 Deere 520
15 for the Reed 103
40 for all the cast iron

All the cast iron is old Warner with 1 piece of Griswold #9 that I will keep. I need to learn how to clean it all up and season it. The only cast iron pan I have was seasoned when I bought it.

The Little Reed had to come home with me, its nice under all that paint. I just need to make a ball end for the handle.

Happy hunting

I've cleaned cast iron a couple ways , 1 outdoors in a fire pit the other indoors in the self cleaning setting of the oven . Reseason with Crisco. Somewhere I saw a really good video on it.I will keep looking.
EDIT: Heres the video I was looking for:

$29 at Jake’s flea this morning. Watched a pre-Stanley Champion exposed-screw vise sell for $20. I have some of their quilting C-clamps and cabinet latches. Not heart-broken, but the guy said he was going to mount it on his truck bumper. I wish he’d bought the 5” Olympia versavise instead.

Should have offered him $40, then he could have bought the Olympia and you'd both be happy?

I went out today for FB Marketplace buy and an estate sale. The first was for more RMOs (round metal objects) for SWMBO'S yard art project--two wide-body mill pulleys for $70. That's a 215/60-15 tire the one is sitting on.991e45bc8054137563aba767dd49e98c.jpg

The estate sale was a 40-minute drive waste of time. There must be a lot of pent up demand for tools, 'cuz this "LOTS OF TOOLS!!!" sale was picked clean when I arrived four hours after opening. I spied a lonely 2" C-clamp up in the basement rafters, but couldn't bring myself to climb up there and save it. I left empty handed. On the way home, I spotted a TOO estate sale, but it too was bereft of anything I needed.

Scored 2 Wilton vises from a moving/estate sale. $50 for the C-2 & $20 for the 2" baby!

You **** is right! Congrats on that find.

So glad to see everybody out there doing their thing and making some good finds!

Outlaw- you deserve a you **** as well! It appears that was a no haggle deal of a price on the socket set. I see why you grabbed it. Ratchet, drive plug, etc. what name is on the little aircraft clamp socket if any?

LS I see Beemer already called out that little Bonney screwdriver. It caught my eye as well, thought it was a Williams at first.

Jwsia- look like a nice haul of cast iron for the money, and something tells me you did well on that little Reed too.

A nice Mustang set find today at the flea market. 1/2” and 1/4”. Most of the time I leave Mustang sockets behind because they’re pretty common, but this got my attention with the tools in a nice little group on the table. The box was separate and I was able to work it into the price. I believe it’s the correct box, it just had some other odds and ends in it. The seller had cleaned out a storage and had a lot of carry boxes today. I felt like Indiana Jones choosing the grail. I took the ugly and hopefully correct one. One Husky deep socket. Maybe an oops? I’ll post more photos in the NB thread.

Things are calming down a lot at the flea as far as visitors, so vendors seemed happy to sell to me today. As usual I was happy to find some goodies.

MIllers Falls chisels and tape, Vaco pocket driver and Klein driver, Estwing mini bar, Vise-Grip, Dormer Drills cannister with a few bits, Diamond wrench, Patriot 1/2” extension, a couple odd decor parts, Mac and Matco misc punches, pry bay, screwdrivers. Ratchets -Craftsman, Ace, Stanley, Craftsman.

Found out Fred is a retired janitor selling his tools too!

Ha-ha. Yeah, it’s not like I especially wanted it. Just the sad knowledge that here in the salt belt, that little old vise, having survived so long, is going to be seized rust in a year or two.

Some older stuff. I was quite happy with the finds on this trip. Especially after putting in a couple hours at work this morning and deciding to bop in there unplanned on my way home.

Crescent chisel, unknown tack puller, pair of Williams C clamps, Stanley plane, unknown maker vise (need some help to fix), vise jaw, German long nose pliers, strange Pexto pliers, Utica wide bill pliers, long Danielson pliers, Indestro 4” adjustable:rocker: didn’t have that one, Thorsen chisel, 3/8 drive Indestro 1-1/16” !, Williams ratchet with nice original orange, Snap On 9/32” driver, and an cool but odd alligator wrench brand Electric Appliance Co..

Gotcha, then it'll be free and you can restore it, lol...

unknown maker vise (need some help to fix),
Lugz (and others) also have that clamp on vise,
I was just about to say it looks like an early German import. Mine is a Hilger & Sons, marked on the top of the static jaw, but they were the importers and I think others are unmarked.

Thanks guys. Thought I read some mention about the Germany part recently, maybe in the vise thread. Looks like this is missing whatever the piece is after the screw. Anyone know if there supposed to be a a spring?

We checked out a garage sale and an estate sale this afternoon. The garage sale had lots of Craftsman tools, some Klein nutdrivers, a few Snap-on pieces and some mystery Plomb.
The estate sale had a Millers Falls hacksaw, a Stiletto screw holding driver, a couple of early Stanley drivers and a Lufkin folding rule.

What would the spring be used for? BTW, some nice finds there, that alligator wrench is really cool.

What do you mean by "mystery Plomb?" I like the Klein driver set!

I hit up every sale in the capital just north of me that listed tools and had a very nice day in the sun. Again, I saw a lot of vintage radios, but I keep adding projects and no matter how much I think I am going to get into that, I never do. Oh well, they are fun to look at!

Anyway:

I found a Fluke 8020a which is the first handheld model they made, but I am not sure if it works yet as I don't have a fuse for it. But it had the original suede case and some very nice leads, so I feel OK at $7. The Stanley low-angle plane isn't a collectible, but the quality is high for the $5 I paid, so it will become a good worker. I gave a buck for the Lectrolite wrenches, nylon brush, and Snap-on ignition tool, while the Vacuum grips, vintage Master Lock, gouge sharpener (in the box!), Syracuse nail set, and tiny magnifying lens set me back $2. Oh, and the Craftsman spinner was a dollar at one stop.

Like I said, a very nice day.

I have vague recollections of the ones I’ve seen having self opening jaws. The 2nd catalog pic Lugz posted seems to show one, but not the real vise. I would image a leaf, like a post vise.
