Speaking of clean examples I found this truly NOS Starrett vise no 925, it has 5” jaws and weighs in at 103 lbs. The seller took it out of the box to take photos of it but it spent its life wrapped in cardboard. I’m pretty sure the vise has never been cranked open and the base is in the original shipping position.383e618efad59229d1e94ac597af691b.jpgdd77424459ae73e6ce82a56ae5449782.jpg0b89f6e75e986baed29785885fbad4a2.jpgfa8ffdc94ce1a616fe8e0867d0ab2450.jpg203c12b3e8709731b60db0015375d264.jpgeecd987ea0a44efe8f0ce9d3bd034053.jpg

Thanks for chiming in!!!

I, wrongly, assumed the June 1950 based on the marks inside...Duh. Learning here.

Nothing on the slide. I looked at Keith Rucker's video, but he didn't show the removal. should I take the slide off? If so, how?

TIA!!!

No worries, your 400S wouldn't be the first Wilton vise not to have a datestamp. Sometimes they're under the slide, but not worth the effort for me.

That's a really nice user vise. I think they're going for about a million dollars on eBay right now.

Where in the world did you find that? I mean, really. It is unbelievable. How in the world do you go about finding something like that? You can't just stumble across them. Please do tell the secret and we'll keep the hunting local.

Smitty, you need to vacuum pack that beauty so the paint job never fades and lay it up as a time capsule to be reemerged in 25 years.---By then it will probably be a NOS 1 off.

Ncgun: the later model Reeds had the T-shaped jaws. They just tapped the pins too far in, it can be fixed.
Index: I work really hard to find vises but this one just fell in my lap.
VA: honestly I think I’m going to put it back in the box and leave it there. To quote an old late night host. It will be hermetically sealed in a mayonnaise jar on funk and Wagnalls’ front porch.

Pretty obvious to those of us who read this board on a regular basis, that Smitty is the best that ever was, when it comes to finding vises.

Smitty, I know where you got it, and it killed me but I had to pass on that Starrett. To me, THAT model is the finest vise made all things considered. I'm so glad that perfect, mint condition vise went to you. You'll definitely appreciate it. It should only come out of the box on holidays!

Smitty: that Starrett vise is awesome. i know for a fact that those Starrett vises could almost be mounted on my kitchen counter and my bride might be ok with it. I love their paint color and the precision on the machining are over the top great. sadly I had a 3 inch one similar to yours NOS in it's original box and maybe 25 years old and it left the building to a kid that repairs bikes. Yep I have a hard time keeping a vise if it's pristine and it's not mounted on a bench.

so maybe we can get VA to post up his 6 inch Starrett combo he put in his chain gang maybe 10 years ago that might be my favorite big combo vise (i'd probably trade him my big Reed 4c for it). VA any pics?

also in case you'd like to have some help removing your pin on that big swivel jaw Fulton one of our members had a big Prentiss that had a tough pin a month or maybe two ago on the Vise Repair 101 thread where he documented several new ideas/tricks to remove it and he managed to do so after a lot of work and some good help from a few of our members here.

just an overview if you might need some new ideas on pin pulling. remove vise nut and put a small piece of steel plate over the dovetail's slot so as not to damage it when you are making and putting a jack screw in and coming from the bottom of the pin. that has been one method several members have been using, but the new idea was to clamp the swivel jaw to the static to maybe avoid breaking or cracking it with all the pressure from the jack screw. also as heating and cooling and Kroil were involved and maybe some razor blade work to cut away any rust that could be reached.

anyway another great addition to your shop and maybe VA will show off his Starrett 326 again so you can see what might be on your wish list if you might need one.

ALL: even though i don't drive 2 or 3 states away now to pick up a few vises I have to say i do still look and it's harder and harder to find some around here built pre WWII. If anybody has a Starrett vise like Smitty's and wants to trade for an older maybe bigger vise I might know where to send you.

Drive, here's the one that I got from Autops.---The first pics are when it was still his.---As you can see, Photobucket has shanghaied pics from just about everyone of us.---The latter pics are it in it's new home and I use it just about daily.---I have 2 of these and an extra set of KMS jaws.---But the 1 I like best is the 646 swivel jaw, (last 2 pics).---I had good pics of it in the Chain-Gang as you call it, but Photobucket completely erased them for me so I had to use PinchPoint's pics of it and even they are obscured.---He's who I bought it from.---The upside is, PB didn't even charge me for erasing my pics.---So that's something anyway.

[wow! What a great find. They truly are a nice vise. I have the 926 that I use as my work horse in the shop almost everyday. But we have to ask how much $$$ was it? BCD. ]

Went for a road trip yesterday and came back with a mate for the 4" Hollands offset. Has a hole/casting flaw in the main body, but otherwise nice. We can live with that. 6", 145lbs.

CRETE: I don't own an offset vise (yet), but that HOLLAND'S (either the 4 or 6 inch ones you now own) are high on the list. nice find!!!

are you sure it's a casting flaw cause that would be the first one i've seen up there? or a welding torch gone awry?

VA: i'm not sure what i'm impressed more about. the cool big combo starrett sitting on a stand outside ready to work or that ramp i'm guessing you built to work on your cars and trucks.

WOW!!

thanks for the cool pics to start off my day!!!

did you build that ramp or inherit it from your dad or ?? I honestly can't say i've ever seen one like it!!

Thanks Drives. Yes, I thought likewise on the hole. If not a casting flaw- too close with the torch or 'Dougie' wailing on something with a 3lb hammer thinking he was working on an anvil rather than a 1/2" - 3/4" thick casting...

Cheers.

Thanks again all for the kind words on the Starrett, I appreciate it. Drives, thanks for the tips on pin removal but I’m going to let the Fulton have bragging rights for a while. VA, that 326 is a beast, I hope to find one some day.

I built part of it Drive.---I checked eBay and Craigslist for a year looking for a car-display-ramp that dealerships use to highlight a particular car for passersby.---Finally found 1 on eBay down in South Carolina that was willing to ship.---It was only 3 1/2' tall so I had to dig down and pour 6, 4x4 concrete foundations with rebar uprights stuck down in the center that I lowered flue block down over and then poured them full of cement.---Had to form up at the top of the blocks for added concrete cause each pillar required a different height addition to be perfectly level.---That was the tricky part.---Added the walkway and rail because you can't step out of the vehicle into thin air.---Worked out pretty good.---I got tired of crawling around on my back with 8'' of work clearance and dark as pitch up where I'm working.---Just put a transmissions slave cylinder on my S10 Pickup just yesterday and it was a luxury standing, looking up with plenty of daylight.---The big combo comes in mighty handy just 12' away.

Smitty: no rush on the Fulton's pin especially coming from me who's got about 20 or so stuck pins. i've got 2 users that I won't sell and I know if i get to fixing these old vises up like some of you guys do I'll have a hard time keeping them.

VA: that is some car/truck ramp and thanks for sharing how you got the parts and built it. WOW.

I was pretty sure it wasn't built there to keep your truck out of the flood if your Starrett wasn't up on a 8 foot pedestal. :D

I always love seeing that Starrett VA.

Here’s something I just picked up. Have been looking for one for awhile. Very interesting mechanisms.

Vise, those are real sweet little vises.---Like to know who made them, I know we discussed it before, can't remember if there was any resolve.---From $8.45 they are a little over twice that much now.:eyecrazy::yikes::scared:

Thanks! That one on eBay is incredible. I’d like to know who made them as well. Perhaps Fierljeppen (keeper of all vise knowledge) knows something?

I'll defer to our resident Craftsman vise no.5241 expert, "ed4banger".

However, I will cast one vote for...

Rock Island Mfg. Co.

Picked this up yesterday. Half off day at an estate sale and the pile was discounted further, so well within my "homeowners Vise" limits

Columbian 143 missing the swivel base, but apparently many are?

I like the extra long slide/screw, adn unusual for a homeowners with hat seem to be higher end replaceable jaws.

Missing the screw retaining washer but that should be easy with a collar.

I do find it odd the lock holes are offset /not centered...

Picked up a Morgan Chicago 140 . Looks so much like my blue Parker 974.

Cretedog, that is a unique Hollands. What is the purpose of the offset?

Vise, on that Craftsman 5241, so the jaws rotate, and the shaft remains fixed? How exactly does the jaws lock down? This has to be one of the most unique Craftsman vises I have seen.

Will McRay, nice Yost 34C.

Finished my Wilton C-0 rebuild.
