like anything in life dealing with the PUBLIC can be a **** shoot. some sellers are over the top great (like the guy who sells cabinet hinges and has a couple youtube vids for directions) and others just throw it in a box and expect shippers to handle things like it's glass and we all know that's not the case.

I just prefer to HUNT/FIND myself in person and deal with face to face contact (yes even in COVID TIMES) and I still occasionally get home with something that had an issue that seller probably even was unaware of.

since I signed up for Paypal over 20 years ago I can't recall what all I gave them, but they've worked great for me every time i've needed to use them. I can't recall a bad Ebay transaction either but I rarely bought from anybody that didn't have a couple hundred transactions.

back to vises and did you hear about the $20 NEW IN BOX ATHOL a guy picked up at an auction? while i know these deals exist most of these are more rare than common and looking to see what all any of you have picked up even if you spent a few benjamins for it.

That looks to be a genuine Wilton 745 vise. I bet the label is not original and not a Wilton part.
If I remember correctly, the Wilton 745 was manufactured overseas maybe around 20-30 years ago. Before that...in the USA. Look for markings.
I have one in my collection (USA) and I’d say it’s a fine vise for what it is.

Not really interested in a non-bullet Wilton, I only wondered about the logo plate. Not sure about the COO, but I don't see "USA" on it like some others like it (pic attached). The seller claims it is all original though the paint sure indicates otherwise!

It has to do with PayPal being a financial institution, and the requirement to report certain transactions to the IRS and FinCen to comply with the Patriot Act. eBay is also under requirement to report total annual payouts over a certain amount to the IRS (as does Facebook marketplace).

Yes, as an example of our system - The amounts are just hypothetical in this example.

You drive 150 miles, buy a frozen rusty vise for $50. Soak it in some evapo rust that was not free, take it apart, get it working like it should, repaint it with store bought spray paint and replace the jaws that were not free either and sell on ebay for $250, which they charge a total combined ebay and financial handling sellers fee of 15 percent (they even apply these fees on the shipping cost the buyer pays to the seller?), not to mention the time effort, packing materials, and even more gas money you use to ship it out when someone buys it. Of course we ALL think you should pay tax on the $250 sales price as though it were money that fell out of the sky, OR go through a detailed cost analysis that you had better have written records and receipts for if you get audited. (been there 4 times when I use to have a business) I never did anything wrong, just paid a tax attorney and wasted a lot of time. If you are mathematically challenged and think, oh you can just deduct those attorney fees, wake up. You pay the attorney real money at 100 percent and when you deduct the attorney costs in your taxes, you get a deduction of the amount you pay in taxes at your tax rate (35 percent?). 65 percent or so of your attorney cost is absorbed by YOU. No one covers that and ironically you had to pay tax on that money to have it to pay an attorney in the first place.

It is not enough that the person who bought the vise on ebay has to pay sales tax on same $250 when they purchase it That same $250 gets taxed twice when you really think about it. By the time the two people involved pay the various local, state, federal income and sales taxes on that $250, it would not surprise me depending on where they live, if half of it goes to tax...

On a happier note. Here are some better photos, that I promised one of the private messengers, of the Reed 404 I acquired that is stamped 22 in a couple of places (most likely made in 1922). Can't get the 22 to show up very well in photos. Not sure what I am going to do with this vise, I can't afford to sell it.

Nice clean looking machinists vises in the photos. I am looking for something vintage American that would seem like something that would have been originally used on this early 20th century drill press.

Reed made a nice drill press vise that works well on that style of drill. My dad has one on his Barnes drill of similar size.

It is the latest version of the Reed vises: It looks like a 108R-S. The 's' stamped into the flat spot just past the cast-in 108R.
I really like the oval 'REED' logo. Too bad it didn't last very many years.

Here's newly USA made rotating vise that looks pretty interesting and has a cool factor to it; however I'm fairly sure 99.999% of you (including me) wont find the price too palpable. It is an interesting concept using this type of vise design for milling and other uses when needing critical tolerances.

Rather than bombard you guys with posts that have my wanted items in the signature below, thought I would just come right out and ask. Anyone have a suggestion on where I might buy big 8 inch vise or decent size heavy cast iron stand? Please Private Message me.

If someone has a big Reed 8 inch, Erie Mogul, large Railroad vise, or Emmert 10A, I would enjoy seeing it even if it might not be for sale. Hey, I have been vaccinated, and even through I am really pro American, I am not a bad guy. You won't regret letting me see your giant vise, I also know how to keep things to myself...

BTW, the handle on that big Reed looks bent. Better hold on to your money, that’s a deal killer for sure!

Yep that BENT HANDLE would be a hard and quick PASS for me on that big 8 inch REED.

I remember the first 6 inch old vise I saw in person (Rock Island 577) once I knew what a big vise was (I saw huge vises 60 years ago when i was hanging around my gramps who was a logger) and it had my mouth wide open in awe.

I still haven't seen a big 8 inch vise in person other than maybe a Wilton Bullet which is small in comparison to a Reed, Rock Island, Parker, Prentiss, Athol, Desmond, Fulton, and several others that clock in above 250 pounds.

RB: best of luck on the trip and if you do happen to see some big uns and their owners are ok with you taking and posting pics we'd love to see some.

sorry all my little ones (6 inchers) are probably not big enough for you to make a trip to Seattle, but I do have a few swivel jaws you might not have seen.

I wouldn't post a picture of someone else's vise. I figure if they want the whole wide world to see it on the internet they have probably already done that.

Don't put down those 8 inch Wilton Bullets too much, it is worth having one, just to see the look on someone's face that has what they think is a big Wilton and then sees an 8 inch Wilton bullet in person for the first time. Makes most of the others look like toys.

Just wanted to tease a little bit, not be cruel. It pains me to miss out like I cannot describe, but the logistics just aren't falling into place for me.
Only thing I'd ask is the chance to see it should I ever find myself in the winner's neck of the woods.

This is the same as the one he has. Model DP50, 5" wide jaws. I don't know if they made more than one size.

Got some interesting images when I typed in Reed model DP 50 in an internet image search. Guess those girls have one of those vises at home with the rest of their clothing.

The one VA has was a catalog model sold to attach to a a early car bumper. The vise base would be bolted to the bumper and the vise itself would be kept in the running board tool box. I’ve got the original advertisement from 1907 for the vise. Which actually might be more rare then the vise itself. It’s got a 1/2 size print of the vise.

Here is my contribution. I do not like the color so this will likely be re-stripped and repainted, might even try to fill some of the large scars next go round. I figure I will use it some for now and try to wear some of this... weird turquoise color off. It certainly did not look this bright when I was spraying it on test sheets at Lowes.

It's a GUAR EXP 12-31-62 Wilton C0, it belonged to one of my best friends father who passed away recently. His father had gotten it from his brother in law. When he originally told me about his dad restoring/rehabbing it I had told him how I would love to get one of these one day to use. Well fast forward a few months and his father passes, when he was going through his shop stuff he saw it sitting on the work bench partially disassembled. He boxed it up and brought it back from Oklahoma with him, called me to come over and hang out for a bit told me he had gotten me something that was his fathers but I was not allowed to ever sell it or get rid of it without offering it to him first. His father was an amazing guy, like most of us on here was passionate about tools and using tools. My friend gave me this vise, would not accept anything in exchange. One of the most generous people I have ever known. On to the pictures.
