I was lured out again by an estate sale nearby. I went looking for tools and came home with this:5bf3e6ec6722e19fd08372f5b60758f1.jpg364562a938d04d50ffecba44b813bb5b.jpg

The John Deere D140 mower is 5 years old, has 109 hours on it, and was still sporting the $1999 showroom sticker. I got it, the Polaris dump trailer and the yard aerator for half that. I had to inflate a flat tubeless tire, so I'll need to keep an eye on that. It also had a half tank of gas, which is worth $20 in some parts of the country right now...[emoji38]

Had to tell off an ******* when looking at a chainsaw.

The seller had some Stihl concrete saws sitting out, so I asked if he had any chainsaws for sale. At that instant, another guy popped his head into our conversation and said "now I'm interested".

The guy told "me" he had a Stihl and Echo in the barn and he would bring them back. I had my hands full of the tools listed above and went to pay for them and put them in my car.

When the guy came back with the saws, the other guy, again, who was not part of the conversation asked "how much?" And the seller said $125 for the Stihl, and the second guy before I even had a chance to say anything said "I'll take it".

Normally I am very easy going and let people get away with stuff like this, but this time I snapped, "BACK OFF, I asked, atleast let me look at it first" and the guy finally backed off. When it turned out to be a 310 and not the 360 the guy said, I passed and told the second guy it was all his. He didn't seem as interested after I passed. The seller mentioned a few other saws he may want to sell and again this other guy tried to **** into our conversation and start asking about them.

That guy needs to learn some garage sale etiquette.

There didn’t seem to be any worthwhile Tahoe sales today so we went for a ride to Gardnerville, NV where there were some more promising sales. When we arrived at the first and most promising location there was a sign on the door saying that the sale was canceled. The second sale had no tools whatsoever. On the way to the third sale we spotted a TOO and there were a few tools to be found. The nutdrivers were from JC Penny’s, the dykes were identical Kraeuters, the 8” Ridgid was made in 1945, the larger lineman’s pliers were from Channellock and the smaller I think are Signal Corps TL-13-A. I’ll know more after I clean them up. The last two sales were busts.

As always you guys are killing it!filed in a bit.

Weird day for me - I wasn't expecting much, One estate sale looked promising and was, the local Flea was DEAD. and the TOO's filled in a little.

ALL scores were at estate sale one by Pros who know better to not advertise in CL? :dunno:

The Promising ES didn't start until 11 and was 15 late at that! So I hit the Flea and got a little walking in in nothing else, and then to PU a prescription, then took the long way in the general direction of the late estate sale. Several TOO's but nothing until I happened on the Pros with no ad...

Found a couple more Brass Hose Nozzles and again, no dupes (how long can this last?)

attachment.php

Also picked up a couple of "historical" Pics - -this first is from 1973, and the gas crisis, and tells a story!

attachment.php

This one is a trio of Billy Mitchel flying, and in 1921 - to prove a plane can sink a battleship they put up 3 as targets for Billy Mitchel and 7 other planes in the flight to demonstrate - and boy did they! one 2000 lb bomb each, and they sank all 3 WWi German battleships in one run.

One was the Ostfreisland, pictured; reputedly "unsinkable", and it went down in 25 minutes.

I don't think anything of that magnitude happened in a real war until Midway, when the IJN, lost 4 carriers in one day. The events in this set of pics led directly to the creation of the carrier fleets and Midway...

attachment.php

Anyway; Onward: at the late ES I was right on time and #10 on the list, so the first group in, and directly to the garage. I found the big Vise I'd seen in the pics first, but another guy practically ran to get a price, - then backed off as too much...

I let it set for a while as i was working the garage. (old machinist, so LOTS to see) Picked up 2 small vises, A Vee Block and clamp, a Bike wrench that has a name but I haven't deciphered it yet, A Holo-Krome No 22 box with a lot of new carbide inserts, the WWII machine tool operations book (#1 in a series), 4" Proto, No 231 arc joint ignition pliers -the film cans and brass mini anvil were found at check out.

attachment.php

at Checkout there was some heavy negotiations adn the big vise came into play. While I can't call the Deal a steal I don't think I got hurt.

American Scale red seal swivel base, No. 61, 3" jaws, 6" opening, 45 lbs.

The last estate sale was just down the street and again not advertised, and I picked up some baking pans for SWMBO, with removable bottoms which would make not breaking the cake on removal a LOT easier

I happened upon a yard sale next door to a defunct service station on my way out to visit the folks today. A few tools, but not much of interest apart from some Proto 252 house clamp pliers. The "old quality" Gilmour aluminum garden sprayer needed a new spring and seals (all of which I was able to cobble together from the junk box) and works great now. The seller also had hundreds of beer, liquor, and soda bottles everywhere, so I grabbed a 1950s Pepsi bottle for the bric-a-brac shelf.

Had an old Adlake 4 Lens Signal Lantern that restored during winter. (pic 1)

While looking through Marketplace back in March, saw a listing for some railroad items for sale, with one being from the General Railway Signal Company.

Met the seller and her dad had put together quite a collection of railroad items.

The General Tri Light signal used to be displayed for years at back of their home, but had to be removed, as they needed to install a handicap accessible deck instead. So, for years, it's been sitting in a pile outside of home and not being used.

Ended up making a deal on it and with all their help, we were able to get it into vehicle for the ride home.

Finally finished restoring it on Friday and have it installed in basement.

Total weight including the support castings for the stand, was 225 pounds.

Saturday, on my weekly "get out of the house and give the wife some space" trip, I had scheduled 10 garage sales, found one TOO and stopped at two Restores, before getting my hair cut. All in all, a busy day.

Well, the first three stops were busts, but I found the TOO right after that and procured the following

From the .25 box I pulled the small woody driver, long bit, Dremel ossitating tips, and lamp *******. The two ax heads came from the dollar table. So $3.

The next stop was a dud, but after that was an older woman who has driveway estate cleanouts, always with lots of tools.

Challenger ratchet, Bell System driver, SK spinner and SK-Lectrolite combo. $7

The first Restore was home to a few desirables

Duro Chrome socket, Dunlap driver, Proto nut driver, and a Fleet speeder. $3

After that, I hit a couple more duds and decided to go to the Restore that is fairly close to my barber. And I am glad I did! I found a couple sockets in the tool bins, check the hardware and electrical sections for anything handy, and finally wandered over to the section they keep larger power tools. I saw an old Heritage badged table saw that I really don't need, but out of the corner of my eye noticed that they were keeping the longer hand saws over in this section instead of the normal tool area. So I had to take a look. And amongst the usual garbage I notice a sway back. Interest getting peaked, I pull it out, expecting to be disappointed.

Ah! It has an etching, one I am not familiar with. I check the medallion, and it is clearly a Disston and old enough to be marked Philad'a.

The 120 ACME saw, a specialized model designed with zero set to the teeth, was strictly for cutting dry hardwoods for fine furniture making. There was a special file, no longer produced, for sharpening the saw. It was only produced from 1876 to 1928. This one, 26" with 12 TPI, was made in what appears to be 1877-78 if I am reading the medallion correctly. With no ring around the keystone and no stars between the Disston name and Philad'a, this is a fairly early example. Not too shabby for the $3 I paid.

Outlaw I'm digging the American Scale vise! Great condition and what looks to be original paint. I'd say you done real good.

bmw Some nice finds, clearly you were "working" hard. You hit the jackpot on that Disston saw in my mind. No expert at all and have no clue if it's worth anything but to find a saw in that condition from 1877-1878. That's friggin' awesome. Definitely worthy of some low pressure.

As there's no Disston thread I'm going to create one.

Nice find. It's an Education Manual (EM). They were published by the United States Armed Forces Institute, in Madison, Wisconsin. USAFI was an actual branch of service from 1942 to the 70's. Out of all the various wartime pubs I have, I only have one EM, EM 950, Auto-Mechanics Course 1, The Engine, A Self-Teaching Guide. EM's were not used for training. They were for induction, professional development and cross-training. I'd be interested in seeing the frontispiece, copyright and title pages on Beemer's 'Books!' thread.

Those are sweet. I have one of the files, bought new from a friend who special ordered a dozen of them. Someone on a different site converted the vintage directions to modern phrasing, so it was a little mire followable. My saw is not as clean as yours, so I have not attempted sharpening it yet. Will get back with more information later.

There is a lot of Disston threads sprinkled through out the forum... You might ask people to add a link to their thread onto your new one.

Exceptional find, Beemer!! I think you're reading the medallion correctly, but I don't think you're applying the Disstionion Institute's Medallion Timeline correctly. All the medallions shown in their 1877-78 section have stars bracketing PHILAD'A., but as you noted, yours does not. I think that puts yours squarely in the first two years of manufacture--1876-77. Granted, Disston normally used up old stock before changing to a new configuration, so yours could be a 1878 saw with a earlier medallion, but unless you are factoring in other data I can't see from the pictures, I would claim 76-77.

One point no one can dispute--You ****.

A quick stop by the flea today yielded a few goodies. Some common plomb along with a plomb la 5418, a 5420S, a dangerously mushroomed star chisel, and a proto 4753 refrigeration ratchet. Also picked up the snap on sliding t and the key keeper.

Nice finds! Here is my Holo-Krome #22 set filled up.
-Don
Hah! I went back to the yard sale I visited yesterday and also found an empty Holo-Krome box. I don't have a picture as I cleaned it up and gave it to my dad for storing his loose Allen wrenches.

Highlights of today's picking were the Utica 6.5" groove joint pliers (photographed after a vinegar bath) and working Dremel Model 2 in wood box. There are what look like oil holes for the bearings, but I'm not 100% sure if that's the case. The wood case has a split in the bottom that some gluing and clamping should fix.

Haven't been on in a few weeks but wanted to show some of my finds.

Husky 5018 set-Still trying to find info on this set to see what is missing.$10

H.K. Porter 36" bolt cutters $10 I loved the intricacy of the casting with the instructions about oiling and adjusting cast in the handles.

The other items are all New old stock stuff from a hoarders collection that was cleaned out. Lots of brand new tools but some are badly rusted from sitting out. These are a few of the things I grabbed. Most $1-2 a piece and $20 for the wrench set.

Stopped in at a sale about 5 minutes from the house today. Didn't look promising on Estatesales.net but the house was a nice old Tudor that my wife wanted to explore. Half price day and two nice items: Vermont American USA made 5 piece Torx driver set and a nice little Dixon jeweler's saw. $6.00 for the lot.

On my recent trip to visit dad in South Dakota I got to go through a early 1900's general mercantile store which is still full of stuff. I was able to rescue this lead hammer, brass hammer, Coes adjustable wrench, and little giant No. 5 tap and die set. If anyone has the taps to complete the set I would be interested.

They all need a good rust removal bath but are in fine shape.

Not a garage sale, but a customer of mine gave me a box of tools today. Here’s what I kept. Arrow staple gun and staples, channel locks, betrgrip 8” adjustable, old timer knife, and a snap on box full of sockets. The top two rows are all snap on, middle row is Blackhawk and plomb. They’re in the evaporust now.

I missed one from Saturday's "Main" Estate sale:

Jumper cables, 0 Ga welding cable about 13 ft including the 200 Amp Clamps!

Those are sweet. I have one of the files, bought new from a friend who special ordered a dozen of them. Someone on a different site converted the vintage directions to modern phrasing, so it was a little more followable. My saw is not as clean as yours, so I have not attempted sharpening it yet. Will get back with more information later.

All

Here is a set of directions on how to file the Disston Acme 120 saw, with zero set. I have not done it, yet. The guy who wrote this up is supposed the be the wizard. He politely turned down my request to sharpen mine. I think the hardest part is securing the special file, a safe cant back file.

Anyway, on reviewing my notes, he said he changed the directions, not to make them readable, but because they didn’t work as Disston quoted. Don’t know the details, the may be on this page, it’s been years (2010) since he wrote about it. Best of luck, if anyone tries it, please report back.
