Before the crash of Twertsy’s original Tool Archives, Username, Twertsy and I along with some others, posted up dozens of photos of WW2 MVMTS and GMTK tools. All of that effort was lost when that site went down and I’m not optimistic that they will ever be recovered in the new version. I’ve gradually been reconstructing my photos including WW2 Federal Stock numbers (FSNs) If possible. Please feel free to add your photos, comments or questions. I’ll start with some documents showing the earliest toolsets from 1938.

Here's a few sets of wartime DOE wrenches.
The GMTK has 5 sizes. ISN #s 723, 25, 27C, 28S, 731A, 33C
Duro Chrome (X)
mOF2hZH.jpg

Fairmount (sharps or pear head) typically found with an 'A' forge mark on the beam.
lOGsQ2B.jpg

Bridgeport Hardware (BHM)
Ohm1ilP.jpg

Bonney. There are 3 types of wartime Bonney DOEs. The Zenel line, the standard Bonney, and this odd 585 series.
The smallest of this set is not the 585 series wrench. It's a placeholder in case one ever shows up.

Some Water Pump Pliers
Champion DeArment (Wartime would have a 1933 Canada patent date)

Vlchek

Williams - these are marked 'chome alloy' so would be good for an early wartime kit as chrome was restricted later in the war

W4mD7NZ.jpeg

Lectrolite - unsure of the date time for these, but they look the part
vl4Zc8l.jpeg

Bonney - Still marked Chrome Vanadium (CV) but these are not chrome.

You wouldn't think that the close quarter screwdriver would be that hard to find. In fact, locating one with the spec correct blade length of 1-3/4" length isn't so easy. There are tolerances for length, but a few manufactures made the spec correct driver.

Here are a few that I've found.

This UNITED driver ins't wartime verified, but some United Brand punches were found in a mostly intact GMTK. So, grain of salt.

Please forgive my ignorance, but did the Govt. put out contracts for tool bids and only accept the lowest bids ? The reason I ask is because it would appear that the tools are not coming from one tool maker but several different companies. So how did the whole thing work, did someone buy different tools and put together sets for a Govt contract ?

Originally the Quartermaster Corps (QMC) and then the Ordnance Department (ORD) had responsibility for procuring tools for the army’s WW2 war effort. They signed contracts with virtually all of the major tool manufacturers. The manufacturers ramped up production to supply the tools necessary to help defeat the Germans and the Japanese. The entire country was involved in the war effort to a degree not seen since the end of WW2. I suggest checking out this thread provided by Lugz on the G503 site.

I’ve been going through some pictures and adding other brands of tools. Hopefully some of our GMTK collectors will be adding pictures of their tools soon.

Thanks for posting those Don! It must have been alot of work

I’ve put together four complete sets, two of which went to other collectors so a lot of documentation has taken place over the years. Doing WW2 toolsets is what got me started collecting old tools. Here are some more. This is a great thread Don, not had time to look through all of it yet but it's useful to have the fresh pictures of all the items in detail. It must be quite a bit of work for you to post it all, but want to let you know it's appreciated. After seeing them like this i might even recognise something originally from a GMTK 'in the wild'!
:)

Thanks. I correspond regularly with my collecting counterpart in Wales and he has a terrific collection of WW2 tools, many of which have been found in the UK. Here are a few of his WW2 tools. 253D4841-FC23-4B44-B6D9-8E600F9BA76E.jpegA82C30B7-AEFB-4BB8-B6A6-F0EE85A8A20F.jpegED35AAFA-AF1E-4723-BA63-234B223CDFD5.jpegE0F670B5-436A-4CE9-8591-A253F2D1B55F.jpeg417318C1-F26D-4D57-9BDF-29A1C9AD1CAD.jpegI suspect that you will be adding some once you are able to get out and about again.

Thanks so much for kicking off this thread, Don! Your photo exemplars are fantastic. I don't have near the quality that you have but I did want to comment that you'll sometimes find martial (i.e., "U.S.") markings on tools. This 41-B-307 Wright 5" extension is a good example.

There are two popular choices for 13-O-1530 Oilers, Eagle and Gem. These pictures are of the Gem brand. The spout should be 4” long.D654C0ED-ACFA-4DCE-9401-953B9245FFE4.jpegACA7F62B-275A-4AAE-B362-0CE36C015143.jpeg34A26DC3-913E-4AC1-BFB9-1AA79468E03E.jpegC490A3EB-C5EF-42F0-B0CA-D1F2DA423025.jpegB46C520C-8E2A-49A3-A373-A7190983F686.jpeg

Would I be correct in assuming that "Revere Mfg. Co" of Phoenix, New York is the same as the current day "Revere Copper" of Troy, New York, maker of copper-bottom pots and pans?
