An early weekend yard sale find of a Snap-on brake tool and little MAC socket, and a jumped on Craigslist ad local to me for a couple Snap-on ratchets.

Congrats Lugz, to your son AND you and Mrs Lugz on gettign the last one through HS!

Absolutely!!! My oldest is just starting, and while the previous 14.5 years has been great, I'm starting to look forward to when they're both out of college and respect us again...

And money. I could not BELEIVE the amount of money I had once the boy graduated from college!

I even got a surprise call from him today, didn't even need to track him down or anything.

A former coworker of mine put two daughters through college, at least one through law school, and by that point was so used to money flying out the window, bought himself a new Porsche and saved money (on a monthly basis)...

So, by fortunate circumstances, I am batching it this weekend. My wife has decided to go visit her friend in "the city" and I am taking a well needed respite from all things familial. Which means that I am doing the same things I always do, but having a steak and a beer for dinner.

There was only one sale that looked interesting to me today, and I picked up these for two dollars:
51255165217_e8716beafd_h.jpg
Most of a Starrett drive pin punch set and a 15/32" chucking reamer.

After that I swung by the used bookstore, where I spent entirely too much money:
51255906211_d0a7d6b273_h.jpg
The Titus trilogy, of which I picked up the first two, is one of the great post-war British fantisies, along with Tolkien and Lewis. If that is your cup of tea, I highly recomend it, although it is vastly different than the other two.

And finally, there was an estate sale down the street from my house today. This was in an old Victorian that I used to walk my dog past every day, watching it slowly fall apart and always, always wanting to check it out. Well, today was that day! Not much in the pics looked too interesting too me, so I waited until after I had run all my other errends and checked out other stops. And wondering around, man that place was cool at one time. Huge inside, lots of interesting furniture that wasn't to my taste but fun nontheless. There were some old tools in the basement, but nothing in good enough shape to get me to pull out my wallet. But, two floors, an attic along with the basement was bound to have something I was interested in, right?

Right. As I was preparing to leave, I took one last spin around the main floor and noticed, off in a corner, a piece of furniture that was quite to my liking, indeed would fit purfectly in my craftsman bungalow.
51256031828_fab954f821_h.jpg
A nice mission style glass front display cabinet, perfect for my wifes ceramic collection. They even loaded it for me, a rarity at most estate sales, but with all the antiques around and not to mention people wondering about, it only made sense. Of course, I had to unload it myself, and as I said, I am all alone this weekend. But it is now safe and sound in the garage, ready for the last few things needed to be done before it takes its place in the Schloss. Because what would it be to buy something that didn't need work?
Nice work on that display cabinet... and in true GJ fashion it needs work. In the truest GJ fashion, you find a project that needs work but first before you can get to your project, you need to restore and service the very tools needed to perform the restoration :)

This is my 5 inch ridge vise mounted to a bracket to go in a reese hitch. Dont know why every vise i find at garage sales is on a hitch bracket. Works good, teeth are good. No cracks or breaks. Will be a good candidate to clean up for 10.0020210618_202051.jpg20210618_202126.jpg20210618_202100.jpg20210618_202138.jpg

Thanks for all the congrats and well wishes, guys. All five of our kids went through the same high school and the principal pointed out that it was a two decade run: our first was a freshman in 2001 and our youngest just graduated. As for college, we've been very fortunate. Oldest son went to West Point (no cost). Both daughters got full rides for basketball. Middle son went to Rutgers and in-state tuition was very reasonable. And this last son turned down some schools to pick an honors college at a large state university because they're giving him a scholarship. So I won't have to sell my tool collection to pay for tuition! :) Honestly, I had mixed melancholy feelings all day, which I drowned out with a belt sander (prepping my porches for re-oiling...) and a few beers!

Lugz Congrats! It appears you and the missus have done a great job raising your children and getting them through HS. That's a big milestone. Now you and the wife will be trying to figure what life was like before kids were in the house. Good luck with that!

That's what grandkids are for!

My first, Jack, will be living in Tacoma with his mom and dad, who is being re-assigned from General Staff with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii to Madigan Army Medical Center at JBLM, come July. I am looking forward to many, long visits, so the Pacific Northwest Pickers better be on their A games!

MrsLS & I ventured to Jake’s Flea this morning, with moderate expectations, which seemed about right when I got my first visual of the field. I picked my way around, and made my last stop at Bob’s shed. He has sold the vises I looked at a few weeks ago, but I hear him failing to sell what turns out to be a China anvil, so I go in to see for myself. Yep, not interested, but next to it is a 6-1/2” Prentiss with what looks like a quick-release lever under the hub. AD8ABC07-6C37-4C5F-B6C2-A680F42D322F.jpegWow! I think he said he wanted $325. Hmm. D099E342-B542-4A9F-89FE-2E4C0F59F7D4.jpegCurrently out of my league. I console myself by observing the wear around the jaws and a half-foot-long crack running down the top of the slide. A76785E2-4D70-4EDA-9F1A-BEC219E04304.jpegIt is definitely worth the price to the right buyer, but I’m not the right buyer. Now, if it was a Reed…
Next to that is a 4-1/2“ Parker. I’ve got some Parker blood from my mother’s side, but not enough to commit to a vise, so far. $150, I think.
Then a 4” Craftsman and a big China VersaVise (generically, they should be called topsy-turvy vises).
Unfortunately, Bob is one of those sellers that places a premium on the Craftsman brand, even covered with multitudinous coats of paint, the last of which he put there himself. I can see it is a Heritage-badged 5191 lurking under the unintentional dazzle camo.
Bob regales me with details of the auction where he picked up the four vises, as I check the Craftsman for missing parts, cracks, etc. I set it back on the shelf. He suggests a bundle price if I take all four, and I start looking at his hammers. I tell him I doubt my bench would support the Prentiss, and I already have a 4” Craftsman. (I don’t tell him it has cracks in the tower.) He offers to throw in the three pairs of pliers I’ve been handling for $100. It’s still no screaming deal, but I have not seen this model in person before, despite contracting an infection from the 519X thread. Double what I want to pay - a lesson in retail, right?
“Okay.”
So, home I go with an assortment of handtools for $34, and a new vise to restore. 88CA64D7-B6B5-40CC-AFB1-631118250B1D.jpegAlong the way, MrsLS has spotted a pottery event at a historical ceramics site. We took a pottery class together our senior year in college, so it’s an easy yes. Cool wood-fired kiln; fires on four sides. 8B03FBB4-73BC-4444-A189-FB913039DAA7.jpeg
We used an anagama at the culmination of our class; while this is not the same structure, we can imagine the family that ran this place taking shifts to keep the fire going.
I look for a coffee mug among the dozen or so vendors, but nothing grabs me. Someone is trying to get an old engine to run, and the pops of compression punctuate the drone of cicadas. We head out.
Last stop at the Weil flea in Allentown. It is well-attended. I pick up a few more small items for $5. CB76C61F-18BE-4898-9C73-623E2E89D3A3.jpeg
It’s warm and muggy here. I may just start soaking the vise in Simple Green. I’ve got a work-thing later today, anyway.

Agreed, but I do always marvel at the clever functional other-way-aroundness and metaphorical play-on-words with vice versa.

Whoa! I did not expect to see that end this way. I know you stand, rightfully, on your frugality. Keep this up and I'll be the only one left in the King of the Small Spenders Club. :)

You’re right! I’d better get a hold of myself, or the season will find me with prematurely-empty pockets. I might have to sell the **** I already have to afford the **** I don’t. Yikes!

Slim pickings at some Tahoe garage sales today. My neighbors and I checked them out anyway. I came home with these. The Walworth Stillson may have a date code. The punch is Vlchek, the rusty cold chisel is Craftsman. The unmarked wood chisel/rasp was one I hadn’t seen so I grabbed it.

Here's my contribution for the day. Mrs. Radar & I went to the same place I got Thursday's haul for their 50% off day.

The jewel for me is the carved set of Master Navigator wings. Being one, I had to have it. But knowing there aren't a lot of us around, I decided to wait until the last day. Priced at $40, I walked out with it for $12.

I was surprised to find the partial S-K metric set still there today. I told the guy working the garage the first day that the S-K ratchet priced separately actually belonged with the set. Both were still there--both still separately sticker priced for $15 & $6. Made a deal for the pair for $4.

The MAC V18S and Duro Chrome 4485 speeders were $2 each.

Mrs. Radar scored a bag of metal measuring spoons for $1.50.

Second stop was run by the same company but they weren't in the mood to deal past the 50% off so we left with only the Plomb WF-23k Speeder and the Sears wrench holders for $4.50.

Stopped by several TOO garage sales on the way home but none had anything of note.

The wings looked a lot smaller once they were up on my I Love Me wall.

Having quite a bit of luck lately at family run estate sales and combination estate/garage sales. Typically love the family run sales but you never know what they are going to be like pricing wise. Some are just trying to get rid of stuff so are practically giving stuff away, others have very fair pricing while others think the stuff is gold...............but you never know unless you go.

Partial Hornet (Williams) 3/8" SAE socket set, set of Armstrong SAE flare wrenches, cool Williams "Palmster" ratchet kit, Snap-On wrench, Williams hammer, Armstrong 3/8" ratchet - $10

Mac Pry Bar set - $45. From the estate sale of a mechanic that must have worked on big stuff since quite a lot of decent big stuff. Most everything was overpriced though especially considering most socket and wrenches were scattered about and thus not much sets put together. One of the only things of interest I considered fairly priced.

Friday my wife decided we should garage sale together, so with our daughter in tow, we hit the sales. They found some items they liked, but left some others in the hope of half-off today. I found most of this at the first sale. The women didn't want to stop, since all that was showing were bicycles that the fellow was known for fixing and selling. I knew that the CL listing said "tools" so I stopped anyway. There were the usual imported shiny things, but all the sockets were in a small baby wipe tub with the 8-points in a ziplock to keep them separate. I tossed in the tiny Snap-On pliers and Bonney DOE and asked for a bundle price. $5.00 was the reply, and I gladly paid it.

Lisle A/C and Fuel Line tool set (25 cents at another sale)
Snap-On 44 vacuum grip pliers 4-1/2" (too cute to pass up!)
Bonney E 1618 DOE 1/2 x 9/16
Sockets:
SK 4019 1/2 dr. 12-pt. 19/32
SK 45124 3/8 dr. 12-pt. 3/4
SK 1/4 dr. 7/16 8-pt.
Ward's Chromium Vanadium 1/2 dr. 12-pt. sockets in 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, and 21/32
Ward's Chromium Vanadium 1/2 dr. 8-pt. sockets in 9/16, 5/8, and 11/16
The Ward's sockets were obviously sourced from Duro-Indestro.
Chromium Vanadium 3/8 dr. 12-pt. sockets in 7/16, 1/2, 5/8, 11/16 (2), and 3/4. I found a 9/16 to fill in the set in my DI drawer.
Chromium Vanadium 3/8 dr. 8-pt. sockets in 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2
The 3/8 drive sockets are all 27** series with the ** in 1/32 increments. The 8-point sockets have an "S" after the part number.
The other sockets are of mixed brands:
Caterpillar 5P1668 3/8 dr. special for fuel system application on 1100-series engines
Craftsman -G- 1/2 dr. 11/16 12-pt.
Plomb USA 5418 1/2 dr. 9/16 12-pt.
Wizard (D-I sourced) 3/8 dr. 7/16 8-pt.
New Britain 3/8 dr. 9/16 flex socket 12-pt.
Blackhawk 40199 1/2 dr. 9/16 12-pt.

The seller wondered aloud what the 8-point sockets were for. I told him "square nuts" and he kind of rolled his eyes at his own lack of knowledge!

Today my wife and daughter planned to go back to an estate sale to see if some wicker furniture was still there for 1/2-off day. It opened at 10, so we went to a church flea market that opened at 9. My daughter found a Betty Crocker cook book for 25 cents, which is about 1% of Ebay pricing. She was very pleased!

I did well, too. I spent $20.00 for the items in the first photo. The Duro torque wrench was at one table, and the rest at another booth about ten feet away.
Duron 8039 1/4 1/4 dr. "Torque Indicator"
Vaughn mini-flat bar
Challenger 11mm combo
Proto 4769 1/4 dr. spinner
Blackhawk USA ZW-1200 line wrench, 11 and 12 MM
Powr-Kraft (Barcalo) "scoop" combo 9/16
Powr-Kraft D84-4843R 3/8 dr. ratchet
Herbrand J-25 3/8 dr. extension
Diversified Products USA 1-1/2" hex Lug Wrench
Geometric-C Craftsman circle-K 3/4 dr. extension 8"
Geometric-C Craftsman circle-K 3/4 dr. extension 16"
Craftsman -V- 3/4 dr. sliding-T
Church Flea 1.jpg

The second photo is from another vendor who said he got them at another flea market. He charged me $5.00 for the lot:
P&C 2732 1" combo
P&C 2224 DBE 11/16 x 3/4
P&C 2232 DBE 15/16 x 1"
P&C 75 punch
P&C 6265 1/2 dr. sliding-T
Plomb USA 5461 1/2 dr. extension
Plomb USA 5263 3/8 dr. extension
Barcalo-Buffalo DOE 9/16 x 11/16 raised panel
Barcalo-Buffalo DOE 15/16 x 1" "roofline"
Church Flea 2.jpg

Not shown is a Kennedy 520 machinist box. It needs a little body work, a new leather handle, new felt, and a paint job. The latches are all rusty, with the locking center latch rusted up, but it has the front panel, all the little plastic handles, good drawers and slides, and a perfect ID sticker. The seller only charged me $5.00, since it was in such bad shape, and the area under the bottom drawer was full of water! It will be good for parts, if nothing else.

The wife and daughter got four pieces of wicker (a love seat, two tables, and a plant stand) from the estate sale for $45.00, so they are quite happy.

On the way home with the wicker, I noticed a hand-made estate sale sign on a side road. After unloading, my daughter and I checked it out. It was about two miles off the main road, and down a long gravel driveway with several more houses past it. The deceased had lived there for almost 60 years. Lots of real junk, and some interesting items. A grandson had taken "all" the tools. My daughter got some neat colored Ball flip-latch jars, a pair of earrings, and some small stuff. I found a Knight Kit vacuum tube tester (complete with manuals in the original box), and the items in the photo. I got away for $7.00.

Plomb hatchet. The handle is loose, but it has a couple of nails instead of the wedge, so it will be an easy fix. Just like the Boy Scout model, but without the emblem.

Champion 504 DOE 1-1/16 x 1-5/32 (by measuring). Has an "A" forge mark.
GM sunvisor mirror. Pretty rough shape, but very cool! The wires have lost their insulation, and the silver is coming off the back of the mirror. It has spots to write in mileage for oil change, battery, tires, etc. I'll probably not try to fix it, just enjoy it as-is.

It is near the South end of the Puget Sound Megapolis, with just Olympia past it. Not as many problems as they have further North, and it is pretty easy to get to rural country.

Here are some photos of the Kennedy 520 box I bought today. I expected it to be a source of parts, but upon looking it over, it appears that someone could salvage it. The lid opens smoothly and the front panel pulls out easily. The spring-loaded pins engage and disengage smoothly. The two outboard latches work smoothly, despite the rusty appearance.

There is some metal bending to do on the right side (as you face the box) where it appears that it got hit or dropped. The lid must have been open when it happened, since the lid is still straight. This appears to be the only damage to the box itself. The rest is the rusty latches, missing parts of the locking latch. The rest is surface rust, paint, and replacing felt. All the drawer slides are there, work properly (need lubrication), and have the locking devices.

It came with some dividers and spring tabs for mounting them. The drawers were empty, but the top bin had quite a bit of stuff, some of it useful. The Snap-On chisel holder needs some repair, but there is a Cross mechanical pencil that works perfectly and is in excellent cosmetic condition. There is also a Starrett "slide rule" device for converting fractions to decimal and tap drills for coarse screw threads.

The first photo is of the box ready for pressure washing. Note the rust and residue in the bottom compartment.

The other photos show the damage and some of the contents. It will need a whole new handle. The original leather handle indicates it is older.

More photos to come. There is a mystery here that I didn't notice when I bought it!

In addition to the items that were shown in the photo of the drawers I posted above, here are some of the useful items, plus the bin of residue that may or may not be useful.
Kennedy 520 9.jpg
Here are photos of the front and back of the Starrett converter. I think the plastic has shrunk a little, so the numbers don't line up properly once you get away from the center position.
Starrett Calculator 1.jpgStarrett Calculator 2.jpg
The front panel is straight and has only a little rust on the bottom. It does have some interesting lettering painted on the front.
Kennedy 520 6.jpg
Here is a close-up of the lettering.
Cover Letters Enhanced and Compressed.jpg
My daughter spent several months in China as a student teacher. She is convinced that the lettering is Chinese. I haven't been able to get it translated. Does anyone here know Chinese? It could be any of several forms of Chinese.

Went to one sale today! It was fairly close to me and looked fruitful in the photos...it didn't disappoint :)
- a few proto bits including the big pliers
-big 18" crescent wrench
-sk 1/4 drive set
-various snappy bits
-Craftsman professional pliers
-1/4 drive craftsman butter fly ratchet
-fairly nice =V= combos
-matco USA made metric combos
-craftsman professional metric stubbies (bunch of sizes not normally found in sets :) )
-various craftsman large size metric combos
All this was $80...

Then I finally got a response of a facebook market place ad for a remline 12 drawer top chest I had messaged on prior the night before and didn't hear back on. I thought for sure I would miss it. Guy messaged me today and said it was mine. I couldn't get over there fast enough! Covered in various crappy stickers and the side handles are broken but it is really straight and will clean up nice. Knuckle head prior owner put a few screws into the base of the chest but it isnt super noticeable! This was $70 but included a lower roller I am selling to help recoup some of the cost! I wasn't aware remline/AMD ever even made a 12 drawer but here it is!

Well, you have seen one, mine! And I was getting it ready to sell, and replace it with a Huot as I like the drawer layout better.

Anyone know anything about Tod-O Mfg? This big 18" brass/steel combo square is really pretty cool and was only $5. It cleaned up nicely. It's dead on accurate when compared to a Starrett machinist square. Klein, Diamond and SO misc. for $.50/ea. Coleman 220F from '64 hard to turn down for $5.

Ooo, I like the UP lights!

I didn't really go out yesterday, as the wife was out of town and I wanted to use the time taking care of some things. But, I did head out for a little bit and notice a sale with some tools

Cornwell driver and a Magna Tip bit driver. The Magna is pretty early, as it has the metal cap and I don't know if its original or an add-on, but there is a metal cap over the magnetic end that fits perfectly and keeps it from collecting metal swarf.

Because those symbols are nonphonetic ideographs, the basic meaning does not require proficiency in a specific laguage, though the lack of context certainly may create quite a few possibly dissimilar phrases, even within a language. The top of the compound character at top and the top of the two characters at the bottom should mean wood, tree, etc. The center character should mean earth or soil. I am not literate in Asian languages and I do not recognize the base that looks like an Arabic numeral 3 with a line through it.
If it isn’t a name or address, then the precise meaning may very well depend on idioms of the specific language of the person who wrote it.

Lots of suckage here, guys!

@Provincial Any pics / date of the Betty Crocker cookbook? Many of my favorite recipes for comfort food come from there! Plus, my mom (RIP) used it fairly religiously.
