Ahem, from the front page of this thread:

Now, the rules.
  1. If it is second hand, it goes in this thread. If you find a new-in-box Cootie Catcher at a steal of a price while wandering from garage sale to garage sale, post up! SK screwdriver on the side of the road? Post up!
  2. Everything counts. Chairs, dishes, cast iron pots, books, along with our beloved tools and shop supplies, have all been posted in these pages over the years, and we absolutely love to see what in carnation you dragged home. We love stories and, even more, we love pictures.
So, yes. A find on an auction site is more than OK for this thread, as long is it is, as Outlaw says, not new from a new goods store.

Wednesday a single estate sale in SA promised tools. It was on the south side of town, out in a field and consisted of a small outbuilding two shipping containers and a semi-trailer--none of which were especially water tight… It was an eclectic hoard of scuba gear, camping gear of all kinds, old electronics and junk of almost every description. There were tools, too, but most were from off shore and the estate agents simply grabbed handfuls out of toolboxes and put them in ziplock bags in no discernible order.

After digging around for over an hour, I bought three things:

The Kennedy 520—very clean inside. PO did a very poor spray bomb (in black) on the lid to cover some paint loss and the estate agents busted out the lock to get most of the tools out.

Craftsman 4247 Brace. It’s shown in the 1947 Christmas Wishbook.

Pyramid Clamp-on Vise. Two-inch jaws tilt about 30 degrees either side. I read the older discussions on the Vise thread—no one seems to know who made this other than it’s a probable off-shore knock-off of the baby Wilton.

Everything else was floating around inside the Kennedy:

--Plomb WF-8
--S-K Wayne 4” Adjustable—someone attempted a repair but it’s still boogered and frozen. Soaking in Kroil.
--6” metal square—thought this might be something before cleaning. No name or markings.
--Armstrong Armaloy ¼” universal
--Cherry Knob Rivet Gage
--Roll of electrical tape

First picture (above my wanna-be garage dog) has a cameo of what I found today!

Do the auction site buys count in this thread?
I might have just scored on the evil site.
I think so ....basically any used tool or garage related item that is used qualifies. I see folks all the time post used tools purchased on the "show us your new tools thread" but that isnt the correct spot for them. While they may be new to that person, they are not new... It is more correct to post them here.

Snuck a couple of stops in yesterday between meetings. The ReStore was the big haul, a pawn shop gave up the other pieces.

I FINALLY got myself a portaband. The seller had it marked at $35 saying it had a bad switch. I took it home and found the only problem was the variable speed limiting wheel on the switch itself to be turned all the way low. The seller has a is a flipper and has several large sales a year. It cleaned up nicely using bleache white tire cleaner. (Just learned about using that on GJ yesterday) Also, I want style points for getting this home 9 miles on my Harley!

We've had company for a couple weeks, but Pop-Pop snuck out for a quick trip to the flea (Lugz 2021_43) and got back home in time to take my grandson for our first-thing-in-the-morning daily stroll around the block. :)

Snagged a GMTK tray from a Hamilton or E.J. McAleer (someone will definitely need one, the boxes are often missing them), Herbrand clutch head screwdriver, unbranded but clearly Plomb/Proto JPD-made 6-inch adjustable, antique Bonney battery terminal pliers, Corsair chisel, French watchmaker's pliers, Plomb 2112 combo and some miniature Heller and American Swiss files.

Country estate sale yesterday. Brother and sister in their 60s selling off their parent's stuff. I picked up the Rock Island 574--the guy said his dad had it before he was born. Decided to get the Starrett item just because it was heavy and was a Starrett and I thought I would find out what it was after I got it home.

Well, the vise looks great so far. It was fastened to the bench with square nuts that we turned off with an old monkey wrench. Definitely remnants of the original paint in many places--battleship gray. Jaw inserts look great for 78½ years old. The Birtman Electric badge looks like it will clean up nicely, too.

Looking for a Starrett No. 652 on Google kept turning up a Dial Bench Gage, which this isn't. Checking the patent, it turns out this is a Cylinder Gage, apparently for checking the wear of your cylinders. Patent was issued 5 Apr 1932. Starrett Catalog #26 (1938) indicates it was discontinued. I guess Starrett then felt free to assign the No. 652 to the dial gage.

I also picked up this little pick. It's 4½" long. I couldn't find any relevant reference for Vautier. The stamp one one end looks like an old meerschaum pipe, that's why I thought it might be a pipe pick. Any other ideas?

Old Swiss goldsmith/metalworker (tool?) maker.

From the British museum website:

Vautier & Cie S.A.

primary name: Vautier & Cie S.A.
other name: other name: James Vautier & Cie. S.A.
other name: other name: Vautier & Filsother name:
other name: Vautier Freres
Detailsorganisation; goldsmith/metalworker; Swiss
Other dates1831-1940 (active)
Address: Geneva
Biography: Toolmakers founded in 1831 by Samuel Vautier ( 1796-1868), previously a locksmithat Coulouvreniere, nr Geneva. Maker's mark is an image of a long-stemmed pipe. Firm still in business in late 1930s.

Data for a file they have as an artifact:
  • Inscription position: top of tang
  • Inscription content: VAUTIER
  • Inscription note: a pipe logo is next to 'VAUTIER'
I think they are now called something "Glardon Vallorbe" and make files, gravers etc.

Stopped at a good sale today, I grabbed all of it for$70. Some older Craftsman boxes, not sure what the 2 smaller green boxes are though.

Weeding through everything now, here are the keepers from the gray plastic box:

There's a little Indestro hex socket set, missing the largest socket I believe.

I’m at the 1/mo Nashville Fairgrounds Flea Market in TN. Nice, but not as large as I had envisioned. Three large pavilions provide shelter from the sun, which will be heating the air well past 90° F by noon. I left behind a Bonney 8” Stillson wrench that was very old, but the dynamic jaw was broken toward the opening, also a small ground-down Winchester screwdriver. I paid $15 for a well-intact though mildew-smelling H.Disston No60 plumb/level. (Less than a Grand Ole Opry cap or tee.)
Pleasant morning, but now heading east & homeward, with a slight chance of catching some of the Wytheville VA end of that 100mile yard sale before it ends for the day.

Can you all give me some advice on how you find so many sales. My normal method is craigslist and estatesales.net I can never find any. Not sure if it’s my location or my methods.

Looks like a bunch of used plumbing fitting, rusty nails, cpvc fittings, and a few decent rusty boxes and rusty low end tools.. you think thats a great haul for 70 bucks? Meh, to each his own I guess

Well, you got that part right! Some would pay nearly $70 for the boxes and jack alone. We'll have to see what other goodies are left once he separates the chaff.

Not a bad day over all; a couple of really good scores, but also the bitterness of stupid $$ pricing that made me leave the only real tool haul behind. I had a vise - a Millers falls clamp-on, WITH the swivel base, the guy says $10 for w vise and he wants more for "that thing" -I point out its the base for the vise and suddenly the vise is $20. it went down hill from there I walked away, empty handed and he had no sale.

What killed me was HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE VISE BASE WAS... :twak:

After a few months of yardsale inactivity due to having two new babies in the house, and the weather, my wife and I finally got out to some sales today. We only went to 6 or so, but I found gold at three.

20210724_145319.jpg

First yardsale
Brand new Blue Point snap ring plier set $5
Fowler 12" calipers $10
Brand new magnetic base $5
Brand new square and protractor set $10
Piston ring compressor tool $2

Second sale
20210724_145518.jpg

This monster Homelite C5 saw $20. Haven't tried to start it yet, but it does feel like it has good compression. I'm sure the carb will need cleaned, but these old saws are pretty bulletproof.

Third sale
20210724_145500.jpg
This sale, I bundled everything for $25
Nutserts and tool
Halogen sniffer
New double flare tool
Two packs of O-rings
An OEM orfice tube tool
Vacuum gauge
And halogen light set.

My wife got some boring baby clothes but she was happy. So all in all a great day.

Bought some SO promotional items. The clock was $5, the two mini toolboxes were $25 for the pair. Both screwdrivers were in the $2/ea bin. (one is ratcheting)

This morning was the NW's largest garage sale at the Vancouver fairgrounds. The first find was an old Union toolbox for $60. It's missing two ring pulls, the front cover and the lock but it's otherwise solid as a rock. Does anyone have a lead on where to get a couple ring pulls? These seem to be unobtainium. (I can make a cover and I have a lock already). The other find was a lot of 3 Tapmatics and a bunch of machinist cutters for $15. He told me the big Tapmatic works but the two smaller ones need repair. If anyone wants those cutters to the right of the Tapmatics they're free. I have no use for them. Just pay the shipping.
