So what's the general opinion on members using profanity in their posts? It's not rampant on the board but I do see more of it creeping in than there used to be.After hanging around here for 4 yrs or so it really jumps out at you when you see it since it's been somewhat rare over the years.I'll admit to using the odd sh*t or p*ssed but lately I see the f bomb dropped from time to time and sometimes other profanities.I've never been considered overly polite and often I'll curse like a sailor but reading it on the board seems strange for some reason.:headscrat

Personally, I don't give a damn if there is profanity in the threads. I'm a big boy. If I don't want to read something I dont. But I do want the option. My $.02...

Nope must have missed that one.

Oh, ok. He dropped an f-bomb that was sort of unexpected and it caught me off-guard.

I swear like a sailor in real life, though, so I recovered from the shock.

I try to avoid using them, try abbreviations, a-hole, f-ing, etc., but there are times when you need to use it. Example, referring to the people that responded to a craig's list ad and killed the guy, stole the item and then stole his wife's wedding ring, I could have called them dirt bags but I thought **** bags was more appropriate and still not harsh enough.

As my 8th grade teacher once said, "profanity is a weak mind trying to express itself forcefully".

Come on. That's a bit hyperbolic.

Recent studies show that swearing actually helps the brain to cope with stress and pain, for example. It's natural to swear.

I like the George Carlin model of language.

Or, Kurtz's lines from Apocalypse Now: "We train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won't allow them to write '****' on their airplanes because it's obscene."

I'm not passing judgement on anyone, just repeating something that has stuck with me for almost 50 years. Every time I let loose, I remember it and have to agree.

There is some irony in loving firearms and their lethal potential but worrying about cuss words, don't you think? Relates to the Kurtz quote above.

Said the guy who's "signature line" contains the phrase "Why the Hell should I have to press 1?...:headscrat

These two statements are made by two different people 50 years apart. Are you inferring that they are somehow connected?

I'm saying that its kind of silly to post a statement declaring profanity to be an indicator of a weak mind, when you in fact have a profane word in your signature line.

We'll probably just have to agree to disagree on this one. We seem to interpret profanity different. I don't feel Hell as being a profane word, especially when used as in my signature line. I think this post is refering to a little different type of word. In a strict defination, I would agree with you though.

For the most part I try to edit out the profanity that flows from my finger tips. But it really depends on what other boards I have been posting on that day. Several of them, especially the gun boards are more reserved. However on of the private boards I post on doesn't really care about the language you use, as long as it is typed properly.

I try to judge posts by the content, the formatting, and the grammar. As always bonus points will be awarded for creative cursing.

I am not a big fan of profanity. I don't swear on a frequent basis. In fact, the last time I swore was about 6 years ago. At that time, I had employees running and hiding, because they knew I was upset. Performance improved significantly after that... I just am not one that thinks that, as a regular form of expression, it is necessary. I also understand that I am more conservative than most, and take the same task when I used to drive a truck, and just ignore it, when necessary.

This sums my thoughts on the subject:

Use of profanity is one thing I like about this forum. There are so many forums that **** (yes I typed the ****) words that are 'dirty'. Some are ridiculous in terms of dirty words. As long as it isn't directed at someone, who cares? Its stuff we all hear every day.

Reminds me of some software someone invented that was supposed to take dirty words and clean them up for TV. They had an issue when '**** Van ****' was changed to 'Jerk the lesbian'...

I would prefer it not to be used here or anywhere for that matter. I just don't see the need for it.

i have been known at time to "invent" new combinations :lol_hitti

i think as long as every other word isnt an f bomb, or the profanity isnt directed at another member then so be it.

I think this post is refering to a little different type of word. In a strict defination, I would agree with you though.

So if your three year old kid (assuming you had one) responded "Hell, no" or "Hell, yes" or "Why the hell should I press 1", you would be OK with it, since you don't deem the word profane? I'm just curious.

If profanity is a sign of a weak mind, then it shouldn't be infered that you have a weak mind for using terms like "hell yes" or "hell, no", because you don't feel that hell is a profane word, even though someone else may feel that it is? It just seems like a double standard. Many people don't feel that other words are profane either.

According to Wikipedia's definition of "profanity", The most used swear words were ****, ****, hell, damn, goddamn, Jesus Christ, ***, oh my god, *****, and *****—these eight made up roughly 80% of all profanities.

Consider the word "****". "****" can be used as a verb, adverb, adjective, command, conjunction, interjection, noun and pronoun, and can logically be used as virtually any word in a sentence (e.g., "**** the ******* fuckers"). Moreover, it is one of the few words in the English language which could be applied as an infix (e.g., "Am I ****? Absofuckinglutely!"; "Bullfuckingshit!"). It has various metaphorical meanings. The verb "to be fucked" can mean "to be cheated" (e.g., "I got fucked by a scam artist"), or alternatively, to be ******** penetrated. As a noun "a ****" or "a fucker" may describe a contemptible person. "A ****" may mean an act of copulation. The word can be used as an interjection, and its participle is sometimes used as a strong emphatic. The verb to **** may be used transitively or intransitively, and it appears in compounds, including **** off, **** up, and **** with. In less explicit usages (but still regarded as vulgar), **** or **** with can mean to mess around, or to deal with unfairly or harshly. In a phrase such as "don't give a ****", the word is the equivalent of "damn", in the sense of something having little value. In "what the ****", it serves merely as an intensive. If something is very abnormal or annoying "this is fucked up" may be said.

But whatever. We can disagree on it. I don't really give a ****.

There is always the use of a feature that is built in the software.(censor/filter)

I am an Admin on the the 3rd largest vBulletin powered message board on the net and we have to use all the tools. Then again, the posters/members are more mature here by leaps and bounds

I'd prefer that profanity be kept off the forum. Since it's a broad-based forum, you never know if a housewife or someone's kid is going to visit to get some information. I wouldn't want my wife reading that kind of stuff.
But, on the other hand, I don't want to get all "word-police" about it.

I'd rather everybody just show some restraint, and let the moderators deal with any objections that come up.

I'm not trying to be the word police by any means.I really don't give a sh*t but was curious what others think.Like I said I'm pretty profane in real life it just seems strange seeing it in writing when it hasn't been here all along.I usually try to avoid typing the profanities in consideration of other members of the board who may not want to get surprised by something but it doesn't mean they weren't in my head.To each his own.

The wife and kid line comes up often in these kinds of discussions.

But if one's wife and children interact with people and consume either pop or high culture (literature), they are going to be exposed to these same silly words that might appear on here.

Overall, through self-regulation, there is very little profanity on this website.

Tell that to my mom when I was little and used the phrase "What the hell"

Damn being backslapped in the mouth hurts.

Watch the one episode of SouthPark on TV and they dropped the F-bomb something like 134 times in a half hour. That was one funny episode.

As far as this site, the occasional f-bomb, ****, pissed, or whatever is no different than what I hear everyday form men and women alike. It is becoming a part of daily language.

If it was one of the decoration shows on HGTV one might say it adds a little color to these otherwise bland boring white walls :lol_hitti:supergay:

We probably ALL need a lesson in "Using proper English"

Do you cuss in the garage?? I do. It's supposed to be grown men talking, and when I'm in the presence of other grown men, I dont think swear words should be held back. If someone gets ****-hurt about it, they need to man up and quit being so damn sensitive...

I'll use profanity if I hit my thumb with a hammer, or if my computer crashes, but I don't use it in regular conversation. It loses its meaning when it's used too much.
