Don't use the "H" word. I consider the term "hoarder" to be a minimalist's epithet for normal people… Yes I'm offended when that term is casually used.
I don’t find it offensive; it means steward.
Hoarders and minimalists are just opposite ends of a spectrum of strategies. Ants and grasshoppers. Either can seem ridiculous under certain conditions. The hoarder pursues sufficiency at the cost of mobility, inventory at the cost of clarity - fool in times of plenty, miser in times of want. The minimalist reverses these, mindfully in the present, enjoying a versatile liberty, but turning instant mendicant (if not parasite) when the supply chain hiccups.

I’ve seen many episodes of that show, but I maintain that hoarding is a natural, rational behavior. There are many behaviors that society condones under some conditions and condemns under others; hoarding is one of them.
I agree that there is a tendency toward excess, disorganization, and biohazard in those homes, but the same can be said of the effect humans have on the planet generally. There was a time when I could easily distinguish a park from a dump, but the differences are getting slimmer.

That may be in the past and "grammatically correct", but that doesn't change the way the "H" word is used by most - it is intended to be derogatory, negative, slur, and anti social, just like certain other words are now considered offensive by those they are used against.

I find it offensive the way minimalists, realtors and interior decorators to name a few, use it, and act like the pics I posted above includes my activities.. Just like those other offensive words, the person it's being used against gets to determine if its offensive or not.

Got these Snap on flare nut combinations for a great price off the auction site and they arrived today. Been wanting these for a while and was hoping to fill a Bonney set (I have NOS Bonney in 1/2&5/8), but I love Snappy and couldn’t pass on them. I’ve got less than $40 in them including shipping which is a steal for these. In excellent condition.
They fit in great to help my misfit set.

That's golden.

I decided to head out before the heat set in and had three planned stops. The first, whose ad said tools and antiques, was more of a moving sale as it seemed that they were selling everything that wouldn't fit on the U-haul. I left rather quickly. The third and final stop listed tools, but not really. It was, however, 14,000 square foot house. Two three-car garages along with a 50x50 barn, a guest house bigger than my own house, and all filled with ugly, cheap-looking furniture. Weird.

The second stop, which had an add up for a few days that didn't show any tools but it looked interesting anyway. It turns out there were many interesting tools, along with a table of fishing reels, there had been a bunch of Coleman lanterns that it looked like someone bought, and so on. Here's what a buck bought me:
51342998417_47116497b8_h.jpg
9/32 drive torque wrench, Plomb female drive ratchet, sockets (Williams, Challenger, Snap-on, Craftsman BE, Cornwell) Bonney DBE, Stanley boxwood rule, Plomb ignition wrench, and a Craftsman push drill. That was pretty beat up, and I probably would have passed on it, but a quick shake said it had bits in it still, and when I got home I found it had all eight. WooHoo!

bmwrd0 gets a **** for that purchase! Lots of good stuff for the buck.

I saw the Craigslist ad for that estate sale. I had a gut feeling that there wouldn't be any interesting tools, and I had a road to build on the tree farm. Good to know that I was more productive in the woods!

Yeah, that estate sale was not one for us. It was kinda sad, in a way. Obviously, someone had a lot of money, but everything in the place was sterile feeling. Now, it was clear that someone was moving out, as opposed to having passed away, but my guess is that all the "decoration" items were what was left behind for the sale. Just a kind of spend money to fill the place up. It was good, quality furniture, but just bland feeling.

Lubrication by the DROP plastic ruler.
Gifted to me, was told it was used as bookmark for many decades. Logo/trademark ended in late 40's. Not known when that logo started.

Hit three estate sales today, with varying results.

Best pickup was a 1944 Diamond Calk individual mattock head. Unfortunately, that sale did not have a matching handle that I could find. Other items:

- 1/2" by 6" (dressed to about 5-3/4") cold chisel. H-D Tools marked, so probably not era-correct for a WW2 GMTK, but in EvapoRust now.
- Multitool, which looks like it's GI. Will research part number when it comes out of EvapoRust.
- Unmarked valve spring LIFTER
- "Ford Brakes" wrench, 7/16 x 1/2 Not sure who made it, yet.
- Swingline Number 3 stapler. Based on the missing paint and bent metal on the back end, it has been a projectile at some point.
- 3 files - Simonds mill ******* 14", Craftsman and another 8".
- VCR repair book
- Standard Range Card GTA, dated 1988.

Left behind, this post-war Camillus TL-29 which has been converted to a bottle opener. If I get a wild hair, I may return tomorrow for half off day to pick it up, as well as its twin, which wasn't ground:

[edited to replace compressor with LIFTER and add the wild hair sentence.]

$10 got my dad and me into the Loyalsock Valley Antique Machine Association show and flea market near Trout Run PA this morning. (I hope their website works at some point - it didn’t today.)
Tractors, engines, a circular and a vertical sawmill set up, dozens of just about everything agriculturally motorized. And a flea market. Prices were generally twice what I wanted to pay. Still, very fun to look. I pawed through many bins of tools, but settled on just two - $1 each. Stanley soft-face hammer and a Utica SPAC BX-cutter.

No. The kit had a 27C, along with four other DOE wrenches (723, 25, 28S, and 731A), but that wrench is too old for WWII. Also, there is not alot of evidence that Bonney supplied Willys. They definitely supplied the QMC, and the Ordnance Dept, in turn, and they supplied motorpools with replacement tools, including jeeps. But no hard Willys factory issued evidence.

Looking good, some great **** worthy deals guys!

It was a good afternoon yesterday when I took my lunch break at a pawn shop I never stopped in before. $4 for this bunch, no negotiating!

I walked out really happy with an excellent condition 4” Mckaig Hatch wrench to add to the collection. The little ****** was in the bottom of a bin. It was frozen entirely closed, so I thought no biggie, probably why it was still there. Man was I up for a challenge...

Yesterday I spent two man hours and tried everything trying to free it. There was zero rust inside but only moved it open 1/8”. Both the jaw and wheel were moving freely and it was totally clean including inside the channel??? :dunno: The issue was the wheel and screw were frozen together. One more hour at it today and it works perfect! This wrench is a long way from home!

Sockets are 3/8 Plomb universals, Blackhawk, Proto 8pt, Mac specialty (head bolt?) socket, Walden 3/4 dr, a Snappy overstrike 5/8 dr.

wrenches are three Williams including a single end special, and an unbranded curved.

pliers were a free road find

I set out to hit four sales today, with the first being the only one without anything to bring home. Which was too bad, as the pictures showed some nice vintage tools; inclinometer, spokeshaves, push drills in the box, etc. But someone got there as they opened and bought it all. Oh well, so it goes.

The second stop was an estate sale for a timber company, and there was a lot of interesting stuff. Most was way too big for my needs, but I manage to pick up the following:
51346406516_5ee360cb34_h.jpg
Plomb extension, Duro Chrome T-handle, various sockets (Proto LA, Thorsen, D-I), wrench clip, 5 MT2 collets, Cornwell ignition wrench, and Yankee driver bit. I spotted the toolbox under one of the sale tables, noticed it had a rusty top but a good handle, something I can always use. Pulling it out, it felt a bit heavy, so I opened it up and found:
51347154089_0b3f7b2426_h.jpg
An almost complete None Better socket set. The inside paint is much better than the lid, which is the only bad part. The sockets go from 7/16s to 1-1/8 with all /32's present. All of that was $30, and I am very excited about the collets!

Next stop was a garage sale with a lot of interesting stuff, but I only brought these home, as she was not negotiating:
51347430960_17e1183890_h.jpg
An inside pic of the two:
51346409531_39b1f892ab_h.jpg
The leather folder is a Klein document pouch, for a long pad of paper, business cards and whatnot. I really like this and will put it to use. The Threadwell T&D is a complete radio set, which goes down to 2-56. $12 for those.

The final stop was an estate sale at a true hoarder's place. Sales like this always make me a little sad, as I could see my father ending up this way once Alzheimer's took effect. Fortunately, his wife got him away from that. In any case, picking my way through the mess, I dug these up:
51345706917_c5394f7b5c_h.jpg
A mix of vintage sockets; wartime SK, 30's Snap-on, 50's Craftsman, Williams, Herbrand, and so on. An SK diamond ratchet, Star Trek Craftsman ratchet, Craftsman breaker bar, SK (?) breaker bar. That was all in a tray and I picked it up for $5.

I would be going back to that last sale if I wasn't going out of town this weekend with the wife. But they said it might be going on next weekend also, so we will see.

The suckage is well deserved but I don’t think that the breaker in the last picture is S-K.

My sad pickup for today was at a Tahoe garage sale we spotted on the way to pick up groceries. The poor old cross pein is unmarked and in desperate need of repair.

Thanks for that! I found the same thing while looking yesterday, but couldn't find a document I could use to screen shot and post.

I believe that Camillus is ground for horse hoof cleaning.
You may well be right...it's kinda long to be a bottle opener. Today is half price day, so I may swing by and pick it up, just as a curiosity.

Toolmiser, here's a closeup of the markings before I got it cleaned up. Note that this is around 12" long, not the ~24" mattock which would be issued with a vehicle.

Very Quiet around here; Thursday I found and left a 3-1/2" Reed as they wanted more than I was willing to pay. If I NEEDED a vise it wasn't a bad price, but I don't need another that bad...

Today starter quiet and Oddly and I left an hour earlier than I thought it was... I didn't realize it til the second stop said "we don't open til 8" and I thought i was past that already.. .:see:

I hung out as they had a row of lanterns in boxes, adn rwo looked promising. Both disappointed a wood box had a newer profane lantern, and a red plastic case had a modern, late production 2 mantle lantern...

Some Pyrex branded measuring cups:
Pyrex.jpg

Empty vintage shotshell boxes, a 2" aluminum C clamp, and a section of rail
Rail Boxes Clamp.jpg

And some Bosch hex drill bits, and Penn 180 and sears Ted Williams reels.

Grabbed the last of the tools from my parents / grandparents former basement, found an old SK socket. Also saw three others behind something, but they looked rusted and/or covered in mouse excrement or urine. Disgusting.

Can those be saved, or not worth the effort?

some snags from the swap meet two weeks ago. the Wilde gasket scraper and Klein’s were all new without packaging for 1/3 of retail price. Armstrong cape chisel was 3 bucks and a no name brass automatic center punch was 5. The thread file was a whopping 6 bucks. 10 bucks for two American made adjustables, couldn’t pass them up.
