I have a running index of repair kit numbers for Craftsman ratchets. I've collected them out of Sears tool catalogs and ebay photos of kits for sale. I probably have 30 or so ratchet #'s listed with the appropriate repair kit #'s. Would anybody be interested in this info? If so, I can post what I have, and anybody with older/more extensive info can add it for the benefit of all.

There is also a pretty good ratchet repair kit list posted on the Craftsman Club site. Poster=Joe. He made notes on which ones have been discontinued as well. Worth a look, might be some ratchet/kit numbers not on your list.

What is the definitive answer on these rebuild kits? Every store in CT I've been to has said they don't have/give out the kits.

I recently had my local sears store order a repair kit for my 3/8 RHFT, I don't think they reallized it could be done, when I went in & picked it up,I asked about buying another one. I told them I was prepared to pay the full price for my NAPA rtatchet that uses the same repair kit. much to my surprise they ordered it & charged me only a penny for it!:bounce:

As of October, 2012, the Sears Tool Store in Bristol, CT has small rack full of various repair kits behind the register. I don't know how far back their model coverage is. One day I will ask them if they have a list available.
A few years back, I went to Sears in Danbury, CT to have two 3/8 RHFT ratchets rebuilt. They didn't happen to have the kits, but could order them. The store called me a few days later, and when I went in, much to my surprice, the gave me two brand new ratchets, not rebuilts, vp coded, and I gave them my broken ones. It had been years since the ratchets were offered, even as a catalog exclusive.
Sears tool up in Winsted, CT has a tote bin full of rebuilt ratchets for exchange, but, with only a casual glance, they looked like mostly current models.

I brought a 3/8 RHFT ratchet into Sears (A Sears Hardware and Appliance store) a couple weeks back looking for a warranty swap or at least the rebuild kit. No one had any clue. Supposedly, even the person who rebuilt the ratchets insisted they had nothing of the sort (the clerk went into the office to ask her). So, I went home, did some research, and came back with the part number for the kit. This time, they (the same clerk) were similarly clueless. Even when he pulled up the part number on the computer, he said they had nothing. An older gentleman working in the tool department happened to be standing nearby. He came over, smiled, and pointed to a number on the screen. Then he went into the back room. A few minutes later he emerged, with one 3/8 RHFT rebuild kit. I left happy.
The moral of the story is: Even if you have all the information you could possibly need, you still have to talk to the right person to get what you're looking for.

In sept 2012 I walked into sears to replace my U.S.A. 3/8 ratchet. No kit on hand he said. Asked me if I wanted new tool sent to store or home? WTH? Stated sears no longer exchanges if reman kits not in stock. No off shelf switch in two yrs he said.
I said send it to home since that will cost sears more money...Screw them.
Ratchet arived 8 days later. "MADE IN CHINA"....I wont buy anymore Craftsman anything..They can go to hell!

I just spoke with Sear's and they said they have rebuilt ratchets on hand to just swap out. I clarified that I was looking for a couple of repair kits. The person hesitated and said they do have them, but I have to bring in my ratchet so they can do it. I am riding over to see how this plays out, but I am not going to give them my ratchets (the larger ones belonged to my father) and hope they return the same ones.
In my photos, the 1/2" and 3/8" ratchets are not marked with the 5 digit ID numbers, but the two 1/4" ratchets are (44807 and 43178). I would like to find repair kits for the 1/2", 3/8", and the 44807 1/4" ones. The 43178 1/4" ratchet feels like it is brand new.
Does anyone know the ID numbers for the 1/2" or the 3/8"? I was going to check ebay as well, but wasn't sure which kit to buy.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Scott

Here is a closeup of my 1/2" ratchet and 2 pics I ran across on ebay.

I believe my ratchet is a 44985 1/2" Teardrop Quick Release, which would use the 43447 repair kit.....which looks like it is obsolete. I found a few of the kits on ebay; if someone could help confirm the ID? :headscrat
Thanks,
Scott

Since Sears has changed their policies once a year I go in and demand rebuild kits for the 3 styles of Ratchets I have. They tell me to bring them in and they will just trade me for a rebuilt Ratchet. I tell them there is no way in hell they are getting my Tools that have been with me for years. Finally after a manager or 2 they will tell me to go back and talk with the guy that rebuilds them. Now whenever I go in I just go straight to dude and ask him for the Rebuild kits. I have done this 3 years now and have a few extra kits for all of my Ratchets. The dude is always more than happy to oblige as he doesn't have to spend the time rebuilding them. Of course he has worked there for YEARS and remembers what the policy USED to be like back in the day.

Thanks for the numbers and post! Very useful information indeed!

Received the 1/2" drive kit in the mail today. The package insert says to oil with SAE 30 oil. Since this is the first ratchet I have ever "rebuilt", how much oil do I need to put in it? Just enough to lubricate all the parts?

This list really helps me out, especially b/c many of the rebuild kits on ebay go by the kit's part #, not the # of the ratchet it goes to.

Having a hard time finding the kits for both of my 3/8 ratchets, though.

I have a 43785 and a 42793. I can't seem to find the rebuild kits on ebay and searsdirect.com says they're out of stock.

None of my ratchets are broken, I just want to find the kits for them since they're all in good shape and I want to hang on to them.

Last month had a no part number 3/8 drive RHFT and 1/4 RHFT #43178 rebuilt at Sears Tool and Hardware in Bristol, CT, while I watched. Plenty of kits in stock. I don't think the woman who did the job was born yet when those ratchets went out of production, but, she knew what she was doing. They work perfectly now. The only gripe I had was I was trying to purchase kits for my microtorque wrenches, but, she couldn't cross the numbers. I said they were the same as old tear drop flex heads as far as the kit was concerned, but, if it was not on the list, no dice. Tried to get a copy of their list of kits, but also no dice.
Bit the bullet and picked kits up on ebay. At 35 years between rebuilds, it'll be my son's problem next time.

I'm glad the list I posted back then has helped some folks. And the additional info posted has been great.

Wish my local Sears could get kits. Ebay and other forum members is the only option unless you stumble across some at a thrift store or pawn shop.

I took in my 1/4" VJ-44807 that broke and requested a repair kit last week. I told the employee that after using it for 19 years I don't want to replace the whole thing. He said there is no such thing as a repair kit. I asked to speak to a manager and explained to her how I would like to keep my original tool. She said to leave it and come back in a week or she can give me the kit to do it myself. After 5 minutes she came out with the repair kit in a little plastic bag. I will probably post a video on YouTube showing what the kit comes with and how to repair it step by step.

I know this thread is ancient, but does anyone know if a #43447 kit would fit a 44976 long handle ratchet? I know this list says it needs a #44784. Are they interchangeable?

#43447 is the repair kit for a #44985 teardrop it will not interchange.

Well that page doesn't have the 44976 long handle but uh, I just ordered the kit haha. I have a 44985 ratchet if it doesn't fit into the long handle one, so I guess it isn't a big deal.

I have this list in Microsoft Excel if anyone wants it. Or, perhaps there is a way to post the file? I can cut and paste it again with the updates in it.

There is also a pretty good ratchet repair kit list posted on the Craftsman Club site. Poster=Joe. He made notes on which ones have been discontinued as well. Worth a look, might be some ratchet/kit numbers not on your list.

BTW: "Joe" is me. I came unmasked, just like KISS did in the '80s. LOL.

i havn't a clue other than to say they are without a doubt 20+ years old and most of the lits look to be for the fine tooth thumbwheel type ,and that some are for wrenches made in the 1950's, 1960's,1970's,1980's and so on?.....That said, there is a assortment of Vintage sears CRAFTSMAN -v- ,-vv- ,-va- and probably some other variations....wrenches that have thumb wheel , fine tooth, flex head, long head, quick release , etc .

any idea why previous was flagged? or deleted?...... am i allowed to reference the ebay listing # at least?.....trust me, there are guys looking for these older kits.....any HELP would be appreciated

I could add the kits, but it might get confusing and I'd like to use the same format so someone can follow along as we had done with this last list. Some of the ratchet #s you had listed I already have with the "modern" kit on my sheet.

This list is awesome. I just ordered a kit for a 44985. Are the kits already lubricated or do we need to add superlube/motor oil/CLP/bacon grease?

Some have the lube in the package, I typically just use SAE30 on mine.
