Starrett definitely feels like it's slowly moving towards that direction. The quality of their metrology equipment feels like it's slowly starting to slip as well. We've been migrating more towards Mitutoyo at work for inspection tools.

just picked up a new electric caliper . i breifly considered starret until i realized it may not be a good qaulity us made piece. went with mitutoyo instead and darn glad i did. starret now on my do not buy list

needed a smallish light of decent qaulity for vehicle repairs and maintenance so figured i would try rechargable maglite. other rechargables ive tried just seemed to be of low qaulity. nonrechargable versions i have just got on my last nerve as i need them to run for one or two hours continuous and im tired of keeping truck loads of AA on hand at all times. hopefully the maglite proves to be a good purchase. while the light itself is usa made, aparently the charging pod is only usa assembled. battery, usb cable and wall plug are china unfortunatly. atleast theyre honest and put that in the fine print on the back of the box lol

Mitutoyo is the gold standard in electronic calipers. Don't dismiss Starrett out of hand.
Mitutoyo is all I use for my digital calipers and mics. My Starrett No. 120A is my favorite of all. I constantly reach for it. Starrett is kinda hit or miss now but I still like their US made line of mics solely due to the increments being engraved instead of printed like the Mits.

im not going to return it but i may look into getting a rechargable headlamp just to have another option in my arsenal. ive got a nonrechargable headlamp already for my day job but ive no interest in using it for personal vehicle maintenance as it requires three AA and im tired of needing stock piles of batteries

I have an Olight H1 and really like it. Very compact and light, I'm a big fan of the olight magnetic charging ports, and you can remove the light from the strap and use it as a standalone light if you'd like.

I have this. Absolute gem of a headlamp. Important to note its features of being easily switched to a magnet light and the battery is easily replaceable in the future (no pillow bag li-ion battery), and easily hot-swapable with alkaline batteries, and has battery charging in-body. I'd pay $120 for it and it's only $45.

Why not rechargeable batteries? I use a pocket inspection light who knows how many times a day and it lasts a long time before recharge and I have another set ready to go.

Warranty replacement SK tools. Supposed to be three of them. I’ll have to call or email and see where the heck the other one is. The 14mm is the one I cracked on a drain plug then the 15mm and 16mm began to round on the inside. The 15mm is the one they forgot. Still have the old ones they are just at work the 14mm went in the broken tools bucket.

Get a Fenix or Nitecore headlamp that uses an 18650 Li-Ion battery. You will never understand how you lived this long without it. Promise.

Amazon Warehouse got me again. Bought a second set on VIM etorx wrenches to hopefully gift to a relative.

They now come in satin with a slightly wider beam profile. Think Protos vs Supercombos. maybe I will keep them

Snap-on showed up to fix my and another persons tools today so while I was on there I went ahead and picked up this. I had used my coworkers same one earlier and loved it so I got one for myself. Much cheaper than the one branded Snap-on too. Not as cheap as something like an Ingersoll Rand but I’m happy for the price I paid and plus I was happy Snap-on showed up to fix my ratchet. Parents probably going to kill me but oh well 😁.

Been working on filling out my socket sets. Had all made in the US craftsman sockets and haven't had much luck finding them on the used market so been eying Proto as an alternative. By and large they are a pretty close match aesthetically. You have to look close on the 1/2 drive shallow sockets to see the difference. The 3/8" drive is a different story (proto deeps are shorter than Craftsman and the shallows are longer...). Still missing some 1/4" stuff, we'll see how that goes.

The socket/drive tool drawer is getting there. May go with some ernst rails or something similar for the swivels, driver bit sockets, extensions, etc.

Picked up another headlamp from the truck today. This is by far my favorite headlamp, and it died in the middle of a late night hub swap/brake job over the weekend. I have other lights, but none are as bright as this one while still giving me full use of both hands and always lighting up exactly what I’m looking at. It also swivels and is magnetic, so I can quickly remove it from the headband and stick it somewhere if I need a different angle. Now I can “hot swap” if the first one dies…

I am sorry for your self-imposed limitation. We all have to by China **** sometimes and this is one of those times. Even if SureFire makes a nice headlamp, it will be 5 times the price for zero more return on the investment.

^ Look at the Fenix and Nitecore headlamps that use an 18650 Li-Ion cell. A fraction of the price and last all night.
I have, but I still prefer this headlamp. This entire headlamp weighs less than a single 18650. I also really like the swivel/removable/magnetic features of this unit. Thanks for the recommendation though, I appreciate it!

A while back... one of you fine gentlemen posted a picture of their hole saw mandrel... I had to have one. I ordered the "No Name" brand on amazon... I got this one. Also in my cart was these sanding detail sticks. I've always wanted them and kick myself every time I get in a situation where... damn I wish I had.... those sticks.

Some new-to-me ebay deals that I couldn't refuse. I got the Urrea 60143 for $35 and it looks like a CDI clone? It also came in, and fits perfectly in a CDI box. The valve keeper inserter is awesome if you work on small engines or flatheads in general.

Impact wrench or driver? I think that the Fein cordless impacts are possibly all made in Germany, some models of Makita are made in England, some Metabo are German made and some Bosch are Hungarian 👍

They must have had a bad batch because I just broke a 13mm 3/8 drive socket removing a differential cover from a Yukon which is definitely not a high torque situation. I was pretty disappointed. I sent an e-mail to SK but haven't heard anything back in a week.

They took a month to reply to my email then I got a response yesterday about the 15mm and they said they will send it out by the end of the day today.

More sockets for me from Cryer Tool. My aged Craftsman sockets are slowly becoming redundant.

20 piece 6-point 3/8ths Williams USA.

And a 13 piece Toptul 1/4" set:

Different brands from different countries - but my initial impressions of both are good. 👍 Not too expensive either.
