Beware The Borg!

Hope things are going OK, my eyesight is something I wouldn't want to lose. One of my FL fire-rescue retiree co-workers got brain cancer, he eventually went blind, and then died, recently.

Philip, I have come close to losing my sight more than once and I'm pretty sure my brain is too far gone to attract cancer. On the other hand, I know I'm not getting out of this life alive. So far, Liane has driven me to and from the Outpatient Surgical Center and I survived that so things are looking up for a successful drive to the Retina Group of Florida office. Actually, looking up still hurts a little.
That ought to cheer him up, Driftpin.
lol
Scott, as long as I can reply, I'm happy!
Hey Bob, hope things went okay.
Hewey, I'll find out in a couple of hours when the doctor removes the patch. This was a much longer procedure than either of my cataract surgeries and even with anesthetic drops quite a bit more painful. Surgeons put stitches in my right eye on two previous occasions but I wasn't awake and watching (from inside) when they did it.
Bob, thoughts and prayers. Hope you can read this! Heal fast and well!
Bugnut, I'm pleased to be able to read your post and I'll be over the moon when I can do that with the other eye. Moving the eye yesterday was quite painful but the pain has already subsided this morning.

Kirk, me too! I wore a patch for years after the accident because the right eye turned in (severed nerve in my skull). Hated the double vision but hated no peripheral vision on that side. Doctor wanted me to reprise my Captain Bob Hook role so this temporary one comes off in an hour or so. It's good when your doctor has a little OCD and marks which eye to cut and stitch.

I love the smile. I'm not sure I could be wearing one in your condition.
Kirk, I'm smiling because the worst is over. Now I just have to find a way to take it easy until December 9.: "Resume your physical activities 28 days after surgery."
Bob, You're an inspiration and bad influence at at once....... :ROFLMAO:
Mark, thanks for the kind words. Speaking of bad influence, here's what you look like after the doctor cuts out the old lens and stitches the iris a little more closed. I can see out of the eye but only that there's a flesh-colored finger, or two, or maybe three (doctor tried to trick me). There's an air bubble and a fair number of tiny blood clots but hopefully it will improve over the next week or so.

WARNING: Gnarly face with gnarly eye -- finish eating and drinking if you have a strong stomach and move on to another post if you have a weak one.

I think I've used up my time staring at the computer screen for now -- hint of a headache behind the eye.

Nice Terminator eye. Judy had a better one that lasted several weeks after a series of intraocular injections. Hopefully your new lens and reduced pupil work out.

Hey, Bob! here's hoping the surgery works. Quite an ordeal as most surgeries are. My eyes look like your picture pretty often so it does not seem that unusual to me!
But seriously I do hope for the best for you and that you regain good vision.

Glad to see you're on the mend.
Together we'd have a pair of cool peepers. The night after my vitrectomy my eye filled with blood. It felt strange, but I didn't know what had happened until I was allowed to remove the patch a couple of days later. Copy of John August 13 10 003.JPG

When my ex wife's eyes started looking like that it was time to find somewhere else to be.
Uncle Willie, good to know because I thought it was Liane's detached retina and cataract surgeries. I've moved into the guest bedroom so I don't accidentally roll over and get poked by her machete.
Well, you did warn us……but damn! I hope all goes well Bob!
Mr.zippy, most of the cutting and stitching was inside the eye this time. My first eye surteries involved cutting and stitching the muscles on the outside and that was really ugly.

Kay, not sure how long this is going to take to clear up but so far I can't detect any progress. The surgeon wants to see me next Friday so maybe he can give me a time frame. After both of my cataract surgeries it was two days from the surgery to clear vision.

Apparently iris reconstruction is the tricky bit: "Iris reconstructive surgery is among the most difficult operations performed by the anterior segment surgeon, especially in cases after ocular trauma."

Hey good luck and recovery time Bob! You look adorable  You are just two weeks late from Halloween. You could have been able to scare few kids who came for trick or treat😅

Get well soon my friend!
Thank you Tapio! One of the many gag gifts friends have given me is a rubber hand with white dress shirt cuff attached. In our previous home I put it in the bib bowl with the candy and let the kids help themselves. They seemed reluctant to take more than one piece, which seemed odd. It's not like there eyes on the back of the hand.:dunno:
B est of luck with the recovery Bob. Take it easy and don't over do it.
Thanks Mike. Something about idle hands comes to mind but I'm trying real hard to stay away from the garage and shop.
It seems like you found a really good butcher doctor. Add some humor and a positive outlook on life and all will be well.
Patrik, I wasn't really looking to have the surgery done but after this doctor replaced the floating lens in Liane's eye I asked him if he could do something about mine. He very kindly took a look and said: "Make an appointment." and that started the process (delayed 18 months for some reason).:eyecrazy:
Glad to see you're on the mend.

John, I hope they have been able to fix your problem. If Liane had waited another day to see the ophthalmologist (he saw her Sunday night), she would have completely lost the sight in that eye. Two weeks in bed, face down with a donut pillow (to keep the bubble pressing on the retina) and we thought she was home free. Once you've had a detached retina repaired there's a small chance it can detach again and she was one of those small chances. Another Sunday night call, Monday morning cataract surgery and Tuesday morning retina procedure followed. This time the doctor injected an oil bubble. Another two weeks face down in bed (I set up a flat screen TV on the floor at the foot of the bed so she could watch TV and DVDs. Another surgery to remove most of the oil bubble three months later and Liane could see almost as good as ever (she has worn glasses all her life). The new focal center in that eye was changed by the repairs so her prescription lenses had to include a prism. Twelve years later, when this new surgeon replaced the lens, he reset the focus point and she doesn't need a prism anymore. The advances in eye surgery boggle my mind.
Bob, eye looks rough but your sense of humor remained intact!
Bugnut, I can't help it. From the inside the view is funny! During the surgery little needles kept appearing and disappearing, followed by blood clots that looked like red sperm swimming around. Doctor told me to stop giggling. Now I have a bubble that jumps with each heartbeat and moves when I look up or down. I can also see vitreous humor moving around like heat waves on the highway in Arizona. Quite entertaining but I do look forward to the end of the binge watching because it has no plot.

Good to see (!) everything went well. Now, and for the 2nd time in the last 6 months, you've got to follow Dr's orders and take things easy for a while!

My father had that surgery, 3 times. Twice on one eye when the first didn't work, and then the other later on. It was some years ago now, but he came out of it with quite good vision in one eye, and not so good in the other.....

Take care.

Lyndon, the jury is still out on this surgery. It has been only three days but I'm still blind in that eye with very little change. From day one I can see light and dark and my fingers moving in front of my face. I'm expecting improvement over time but I have no idea when or how much it will improve. I see the surgeon on Friday and expect a prognosis. Not worried yet but I am a little disappointed. At least I have absorbed all the patience Liane left lying on the table.

Keep your spirits up Bob……you seem to overcome the many issues you have been handed with grace and class!

Edit………jury is still out on dignity!
Mr.zippy, I haven't always been undignified. In my former (Haloween 1967) life I was ordained the Reverend Race Cam by Sister Inscrupulata (Liane is an ordained mail-order minister). All went well until we got lost in White Plains NY. The officer insisted on escorting us to our destination. Luckily the top hat was in the back seat of our Rambler station wagon -- this was 3 months before we picked up the GTO.

Way to go Bob I guess things are looking up. Least Doc didn't remove your sense of humor.

Still tracking you Bob, not like a stalker, but not much to add in except to say you have my continued well wishes and concern.

Look after yourself, though I suspect your Bride does a good job of that.

How did a looker like Liane get stuck with you?
Uncle Willie, I discovered Liane has poor eyesight and prefers to have her picture taken when not wearing glasses. I wore a phony camera around my neck whenever we were together. This photo, from 1961 shows her looking at what she thinks is the camera.

These were taken 50 years apart, in March 1962 and March 2012. Note the absence of glasses.

Ha! Takes a brave? man to be making a play on a nun………just saying.
Mr.zippy, it has always been life-threatening but since I got rid of the rulers and switched to tape measures, much less painful on my knuckles.

Mike, it isn't dramatic but I think there's a little improvement today. My colorectal specialist keeps an eye on my sense of humor and so far it's just polyps.

Rian, always good to have you stop by and post encouragement. You're right about my bride. The eye surgeon sees me after a week but Liane sees me every day and tells me it's looking better. Did I mention she has a razor sharp sense of humor with a generous helping of sarcasm? After she had similar surgery, those were my daily words to her.
Hoping things become clearer as the week goes on.
Kirk, I discovered a way to depict what's going on. My vision in that eye is cloudy with a ring in the center (when looking down) that moves around when I look up, down or sideways. I can discern light and dark areas and even objects. Holding up two fingers in front of the eye looks about like this (but without as much contrast):
Buffalo Bill Day 4 View.jpg
It's better than the first day and a little better than the third.

Hoping for continued improvement in the vision department, Bob.
You’re a lucky man- Liane didn’t age like you did!
Scott, every day the air bubble shrinks a little more.
I'm extremely lucky in every way possible. I know redheads turn gray later in life but I worry there's one of those paintings of Dorian Liane up in the attic.
So, you're saying you have TupperVision? Hope it improves to at least SaranVision.
Kay, years ago my neighbor gave me a little birthday present (we don't exchange gifts of value). Looks like it needs an upgrade to Tupperman but I've already rejected being called Sue so Sara is out as well.

Reject all you want. I like Saran Man. It's gotta flow to it and it even rhymes.

Look! Out on the sidewalk! Able to navigate around a doddering tortoise in three easy steps. Can find the number on his house without a seeing eye dog. It's Saran Man!
Kay, can you tweak it to Sauran Man? That would help explain my weirdness, coming from the ancient city in Kazakhstan.
Bob, sorry, but I think Kay has a winner. I propose we let Lianie call this one. As usual, your vote doesn't count
Kirk, I see you're pretty quick to pile on. One word from me and my Kazakh bride will kill a goat and put a hex on your bulldozer's clutch. Any idea where I can get a goat in Boca Raton?
