I was thinking something similar to what holds my wheelbarrow to the fence, but not sure what yet

That acronym is the haunting reminder of every failed would-be writer in the world. Submission guidelines! Every publisher has a "slush pile", from which editors' assistants, typically right out of college, would pluck unsolicited manuscripts to "read." And by read I mean the first paragraph, maybe a page or two, if you're lucky, skimming the rest and jumping to the end. Their goal is a strange mix of practicality (trying to get to the bottom of the "slush pile" so they don't have to read any more unsolicited manuscripts), idealism (being the one to discover the next Cormac McCarthy or Tom Clancy) and humor (finding a contribution for the office's weekly **** of all bad sentences jokes). Every unsolicited manuscript always arrives with a SASE, because the publisher doesn't want to spend 52 cents on an envelope and a stamp just to send every Private Lugnutz in the country a rejection letter, which arrives in your own all too familiar scrawl back at your own house a few weeks or months later. :)

I found this while cleaning up my place over the weekend. You can see that disaster in my shop thread. Someone posted one recently so I knew what it was. Now I just need to find a handle.

Today was a strange one.

Hit a random estate sale this morning upon spotting the sign.

The sale was a an elderly man moving who sold his home, so family run sale with all the kids there.

Things were very nice until some jerk of a certain ”ethnic background” showed up. All he did was give the man and his family grief. He was loud, rude, demanding, and kept pushing these people to their breaking point. He went far beyond normal dickering, and was trying to cheat the man out of money too. This went on for maybe 10 minutes in the garage. They wanted him gone. The owner’s son in law was a nice guy and kept trying to keep things calm and friendly.

Then i thought the guy left. We were talking about how this type of crew show up at all the sales and use distraction techniques and all that. It turns out he went in the house and came back to the garage and starts his BS all over again.

Now there were friends of the family there and they were getting into it with him. Another old man tried to make like he was buying the things this guy kept pressing them for. The jerk tried to change his tune and just buy the things but stuff got worse. I turned and made several small comments to back the family because the guy’s behavior was beyond acceptable. He tried to cheat the man out of 15 dollars on top of what he was already attempting to rip him off. He tried to play the race card on the family and everything, saying hey look at people like him and treat them a certain way. He went to college in this country, bla bla bla.

The elderly owner at one point told him “You think I’m just a dumb old man, but I’m a man who just lost his wife.”

That really struck me hard....

The guy ignored him and continued to bully everyone over some stupid pressure washer and this that and the other thing.

He asked the old man about other items and the old man kept saying It’s sold. The jerk goes, ”What? You are buying your own things now?”.

Well, here it goes. The owner had enough and told the jerk “Just Leave”. The jerk started making all these comments. Now me, who was 10-15 feet away with my back to this mess the whole time, had just about enough of this situation for the past 20 minutes. It was disgusting. From me, a guy who likes a good haggle, that guy’s actions were just an insult to anyone who ever set foot in a sale.

It take a lot for me to get into it with stranger but I just went off on the guy and verbally threw him out. I said Something like “This man just asked you to leave. The man just lost his wife and you’re treating him like this. You’ve caused nothing but problems and ruined this sale for everybody.“

He goes oh I didn’t know, bla bla bla. I was just haggling.

I said your haggling is done, etc etc.

But we were just having fun....

I said Oh, you were having fun? Well no one else is.

But what did I do? What did I do?

Then I proceeded to tell him if he was at a flea market up North they would have thrown him out long ago.

The guy took off and hopped in his stupid little van. The sons and couple other customers just kind of looked at me like thank you and man wtf.

A few minutes later I ran in CBacres at my car, but he missed the show!

I’ll add that to the list of estate sale stories.

As for my haul from that sale, a random assortment of tools and things from the man’s tool chest and other boxes. A Kennedy Kits box. I like the clips in there, they remind me of my piano teacher, he used to give them to me for my books. Also had the neat little two baby knives set in it.

i feel kind of winded after that last post But some Klein, Craftsman, PK Neuses, US stamped brass lock, a cool bar clamp, etc..

That's a nice haul 3bay, in spite of the ugly "customer"...

More pics on the baby knives?

And that is a ratcheting cable cutter; yes? I like the "baby" Kennedy kits boxes.

I had time to kill while my youngest had a volleyball tournment today. FB marketplace showed a garage sale about 15 minutes away from the school where we were. No pictures, but it said they had tools. I figured it was going to be lawn/garden stuff. I was suprised at what they had and the prices were really low. They wanted 30 bucks for both sets. I gave them 40 and told them not to worry about the change. I didn't get to ask about the tools or who's they were. I could just tell that whoever bought or owned them wasn't around anymore. I went back after I picked up my kid to maybe buy some more stuff, but they were gone. No one came to the door when I knocked.

I’ve been embarrassed to show my face around here. You guys are killing it while I struck out my first three trips of the year. Well I finally got on the board today.
Went to an estate sale out in the country today. It looked pretty picked over, but I came away with a hatchet handle, a bunch of SK sockets and Ratchets and a NOS looking 13 piece sk wrench set in the roll. Not a sign of use on any of the wrenches. Paid less than the original tag price too. Who says inflation is bad these days???

I had a pretty good day today. My dad is getting paid to clear out a hoarders house. He is currently trying working his way through the barn and came across a barrel filled with old iron tools.

He called me and said he had some tools I would be interested in and we would make a deal on then.

He knows I am always looking for Blacksmith tools so it was a no brainer.

I paid him $100 for 22 pairs of tongs and a few misc tools. Some look homemade but many look like quality pieces.

The strangest thing happened at an estate sale today...

I got up this morning and went to the local flea and didn't find anything. That isn't unusual , although I have found some good stuff there before.
However, I had promised a friend of mine who lost her husband to a stroke last April that I would find an Estate sale company to get rid of his sizable accumulation. SO, I went to two estate sales near me put on by two different companies to scope them out and inquire if they might be interested. Of course, it would be necessary to make sure that their prices were good, so I bought some items. Here are the items that I bought:

20220122_161233.jpg

Total cost for these items $20.

Let me know if you want to see more.

Yes, it is.
When I was at the first sale of the day, I went down to the basement to see if anything was left of the hand tools (which included a respectable amount of Snap-On). As I began looking around a couple was buying an older SO box from maybe the late 40s. I wandered over to the table next to where the box was and spied this just laying there in a pile of greasy SO sockets priced at $10 each (among a lot of less desirable items). This wasn't even priced. I instantly knew it was pretty good due to the discussion from a couple weeks ago on this thread. I thought I would ask anyway just to see what they wanted. I took it upstairs and they said $5. They probably thought I had Parknsons because I was shaking as I paid. I looked it up and it is a lot better than I thought.20220122_161320.jpg20220122_161328.jpg20220122_161340.jpg20220122_161349.jpg

Patent Pending, earliest style. I still can't believe it.

Good luck with the CMan chisel sharpener. I bought one used, and could never get it set up square. I couldn’t find online directions back then, hope you are more fortunate.

RTM i have never seen one of these before I found this. I tend to think it would almost need to be set up on a dedicated grinder. It looks like it has never been used. Thanks for the info on your experience.

I think I have a new in the box C-man sharpening guide with instructions that I can copy if that would be helpful. If I can find it in my mess of moving.

Outlaw, I’ll get some pictures of the knives tomorrow They aren’t fancy, in fact they have some damage which I didn’t know until I got home. Yes, a Klein cable cutter. It needs a bad oiling. The owner was telling me about it and the Neuses stripper, he worked for Sprint at one point, there was a tool box full of old fuses and parts.

CB told me of another sale with tools that I was unaware of. I went there at the end of the sale and they were pricing so low that I filled a bin with tools and misc. for cheap. Today was a no haggle day all around for me,lol.

A few items of interest including cap guns, a big cast iron hydrant wrench, an S-K finger ratchet, a faucet retaining nut socket, and a bunch of nice pliers that remained.

Another small haul today. Mrs. Radar accompanied me to the sale out west of S.A. The drive had some nice curvy roads and I was enjoying myself--apparently a little too much because I failed to notice the warning signs of her speed anxiety until the "Slow Down!" command was issued. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted...

It was the second day of the sale and the house and two garages were still packed. I looked at a lot of stuff--they were especially proud of the Craftsman and S-K tools. There was a freezer bag with 10 rusty S-K Wayne combo wrenches priced at $120. Couldn't figure that one out. The agent did allow me to break into the $100 bag of Snap-on tools and extract theFL12A swivel socket and SV67 1/2" ratchet adapter (much newer version of Oldpine's find a few posts up-thread).
Sadly, the 1941 SO Ferret S-6 extension's ball catch is toast.
J.H. Williams B-52 ratchet is in fairly good shape.
The 3" finger plane's only marking is a cast in BL on the body under the knife. I've seen untrustworthy eBay listings calling near-identical examples Buck Brothers, Great Neck and Craftsman. Anyone have an opinion?
Total $7.

On another forum, toy plane Craftsman 619 3705 by Sargent.

putting that number into google gets a few different images, so possibly more than one maker for the same CMan part number.

I previously had two Craftsman by Sargent with the BL marking.

so I would say the 3705 + BL indicates Sargent made.

Oops, Tx beat me to the conclusion. And his link out to the little Shaver page shows some of the different models, but all by Sargent, I’ll be d@mned.

OR I believe that little thumb plane was made by Sargent. I've got a couple. Found one they OEM'd for Craftsman. Here's some good info...Sargent "Little Shaver". Nice haul by the way.

I had a big haul today. Will try to start posting tomorrow.

Thanks gentlemen! My iron has no markings at all which is why I was hesitant to cite a manufacturer, so thanks for the link, Tx, there can be no doubt.

Thanks for stepping in and shutting the bully down. I believe we have a large contingent of that group here in Dearborn,MI. It's sometimes downright disgusting the methods, harassment, pushiness that is displayed . Glad you were able to quiet it down a bit. Looks like your rewards are some good shopping in later posts.

Today's flea trip (Lugz 2022_6) couldn't have started out any worse when I parked and suddenly realized to my wretched dismay that my cash clip was in the front pocket of my jeans - and I wasn't wearing them! (I was in sweats and went directly from there to a local pond to play some hockey.)

I walked around looking at things anyway, hoping to run into one of the couple two or three collectors I chat with from time to time, but no such luck. I was going to have to resort to borrowing a tenner from one of the sellers, working up a considerable amount of humility cutting through the awkwardness of even asking.

Frank, first seller I asked, a house-close out guy who I buy something from every other week, started immediately grousing and grumbling. Second guy, Sugarbush, said he would but he was short. Third guy I asked was Dependable Don, also a house close-out guy. He was sitting in his truck keeping warm while people pawed through his stuff. "It's not even for one of your things, Don," I pointed out immediately after explaining my dilemma. Without batting an eye, he reached into his pocket and peeled one off a thick wad. "You're a gentleman," I said, and he laughed, saying, "Don't spread that around." :)

They don't call him Dependable Don for nothing!

20220123_085029.jpg

The wooden box is full of furniture nick and dent stick nubs, brushes and a wooden burnisher, and as I was poking through them, assessing the colors and thinking about my tool chests and boxes and house furniture, the seller threw the NOS pack in for nothing.

Some of the bibliophiles in the thread may know the story behind the Uncle Wiggily book. The famous children's stories - 15,000 of them, all written by the same author - first appeared in the Evening News of Newark, NJ, every day except Sundays, beginning in 1910. "Uncle Wiggily Goes Chestnutting", "Uncle Wiggily on Rollerskates", "Uncle Wiggily at the Dentist", and so forth. Platt & Munk bought the rights and started publishing them in book form in 1913. (This collection is a 1915 copyright.) That, in and of itself, is noteworthy. But there's a serious and more adult reason for having this on my library shelf.

Fans of J.D. Salinger (Catcher in the Rye) familiar with his other works may recognize the name for one of his stories, "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut", from his 1953 short story collection, Nine Stories (also containing "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and "For Esme with Love and Squalor"). It's not a children's story, but it does have a child with an imaginary friend in it, and while I have never seen this mentioned in any review or literary essay or critical analysis, it is clearly a reference to Garis's famous Evening News stories and ensuing books.

We had that show in RI as well (maybe we were receiving the UHF signal from Boston at the time?).

I preferred The Electric Company, and especially The Krofft Supershow! Who remembers the Wonderbug???

3Bay, that’s a great haul. Depending on price, it could be a you ****.
