Slow day (again) 2 planned stops - one at 7 - one at 9 so I planned a walk in between in the "Antique store" section of town. (all closed that early) I counted 19 of them! Kinda surprised that many are still in business. Also hit one TOO on the way home.

I spent all of $5.25 today...

The gold water bottle was bought for the bottle, not the color... These are really good ones, and I now have three - two 17 oz, and one 26 or 7? (I'm not counting a larger one that is at work - I haven't been into the office for almost 2 years so who knows what is still on my desk..)

M308 SS Wat Bot clamp, drivers, brass.jpg

The rest was a quarter! Mitchell 300 (France) (Edit - Post cleaning correction 300 NOT 308... (I only wish - it would have been my first 308...) , SS large hose clamps, Aluminum umbrella clamp (5/8" hole), Rigid angle driver with 2 Phillips and 2 straight, and a brass torch handle.

and from the TOO $3 spent on the rubber band gun:

Are you sure that's is an umbrella clamp? 😉

I'm gonna repurpose mine into a round set of jaws for light vise work, since it doesn't fit my desk lamp, but fits on the vise jaw nicely.

Very nice 3bay!

Guys, finally got the Yawman and Erbe Mfg Co cabinets unloaded when our son came for a visit today. Love the look of this set! I decided to vacuum and brush out the drawers before starting to put stuff in the cabinets. Looks like I forgot to unload the top 5-drawer cabinet. Not much to be found...a cast iron Indian, couple of whetstones, a box of GE "electric tubes" and in one of the drawers were some unused kerosene lamp wicks, part of a kerosene lamp stamped "Eagle" along with a little bit of trash in the form of gnawed paper and insulation. The paper "trash" turned out to be original Yawman and Erbe "blank drawer labels".

Got out to a few stops today, this pic is from a last day estate sale, I was kinda surprised that this stuff was still there as the rest of the house and garage was extremely picked over.

Bunch of Challenger 3/8 stuff including the ratchet, some random sockets mostly Craftsman, a few Craftsman punches, 1/2" Husky extension, Buck Bros chisel, Plomb combo, long C combo, Penens and Tru Test combos. The ball pein is a Stilleto. $4.

IMG_3709.jpg

The other sales I went to didn't have much in my wheelhouse, but I found a few bits for cheap. I grabbed the wrenches at one place for $2 just cause I couldn't leave the P&C behind and I was curious about the others, the two Nicholson files were also $2, the SK spinner and socket the guy just gave to me. I'll take it!

Oh yeah and the little Goodell Pratt screwdriver I got in the sale from the pic above, forgot to include it.

Did you ever call Forestry Suppliers, Inc. about that leather shoulder bag you found that I tentatively identified as a map case with compass, scope, or other instrument pocket? More importantly, were you familiar with the Forestry Suppliers name before? I wasn't. Wow. They are mentioned in every kind of commercial, governmental, institutional, or quasi-institutional book you can imagine, especially in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, concerning forestry, fire service, surveying, archeology, and any other kind of professional outdoor activity you can think of involving traipsing around in the woods. While I did not locate your exact model, they made map cases for rangers, smokechasers, surveyors, etc, and still do, though now all modern-y and Gore-tex-y.

And their story is kind of cool, too...

"With a graduate degree in forestry and following more than four years World War II service with the United States Army in England, 33-year-old Jim Craig returned to his native Mississippi in 1946 and soon began working with the Mississippi Forestry Commission. On July 1, 1948, Jim Craig hung out his shingle as a Consulting Forester, making him a Mississippi pioneer in that field. Things went well for a while until a business recession in 1949 began to take its toll. Lumber and pulpwood industries were hard hit, and the demand for consulting forestry services took a nosedive.

The economic downturn forced Jim Craig to seek ways to supplement his income. He then got the idea for a new business sideline, which he called Jim Craig's Supply Service. The company's first sale, invoiced February 21, 1949, was for a tree scale stick. The retail price was $1.60, plus Mississippi sales tax of 3 cents.

love the little chef hat design. They used that on egg beater drill side handles too.
Yeah, I like the design a lot too. And unlike a lot of "mini" screwdrivers there's actually a substantial handle to hold on to!

Wow, great resource there, thanks for sharing. Living on the edge of a large green space always has me worried about needing that stuff. Buddy of mine who lives in the middle of a different green space has several items from their list, including a fire pump, water cannon, etc, for using his pool to protect his house. Or maybe swimming in his fire protection tank, not sure which.

I don't know how you guys find all of these sales. There are like no flea-markets around me minus trade days in Fredericksburg which is all modern-vintage house decorations. All the estate sales that I somehow run across are filled with pillows and glassware. One day I will find a good one.

I drove an a hour to a very nondescriptive ad on Facebook marketplace and wound up buying a Wayne Blendo Matic pump. This is it after cleanup today. He has a pile of pumps that would make about 8 to 10 good ones. I think I am starting to be a collector. I have 5 now.

It was stored inside since 1976 when last inspected. I have $200 plus travel into it. Missing the hose and nozzle and has one broken glass.

Last week I won an auction of two suitcase wire feeders in Baytown. That is a two and a half hour drive but they were only $31 for the pair. Then Friday I spotted an ad for a bench grinder for $100 on Marketplace. The only picture was very poor and it just said "bench grinder, works good." Blowing up the photo I thought I could read Ba and 3/4 hp on the very dirty label. I called right away and told him I was on my way. It turns out the location was just a couple miles past the auction house I had gone to the week before. Anyway, I forgot to take a photo before I cleaned it up But all I did was clean the grinder and paint the pedestal that was originally red. I did add a wheel and traded a wire brush for the flap sander it came with.

I met up with my picking buddy BMWRD0 and we hit up a local swap meet (nwrda) in Vanouver Wa... it was a decent day and I found a few things I have been wanting! Highlight for me was probably the Paschall hammer or the amount of Proto mfd sockets I needed for my drive board! Super stoked for the uncommon proto 3/8 spinner handle I traded bmw but that was a trade so not technically a find.

Craftsman-
4 different professional drivers- i needed 2 of these-torx and P1 !
Long C linesman pliers
Long c tap and die handle with decent logo and a few dies
1/4 handle-trade from beemer
USA made bbq set- going to sell this one...done need 2 sets
long c screwdriver
3/8 hinge handle
long c dbe-bmw trade bait

P&C-
2 does- 100 series and early hand struck series
several sockets including some non plated ones

Proto- LA and MFD
3/8 betr grip spinner handle- super excited!
LA era parrot nose pliers
mfd pliers
mfd era 1/4 from bmw- but has the pass through from air craft no drop saftey
1/4 mfd spinner
1/4 spinner handle-old style-from bmw
puller feet-bmw trade
Ton of mfd 1/4 and 3/8 sockets for my drive tools board!
metric 16mm MFD combo

Random hammer head...cant tell if it is for a cobblers hammer ?
holley carb rebuild kits- cool logos!

Plomb-
couple of spare pebbles
wf dbe
2-1/4 drive 6" extensions!
**paschall hammer with original handle** never found one in the wild before!
1/2 drive universal
2- 1/4 sockets
1/2 hinge handle!
some puller feet from bmw for my plomb puller board

If you see something you are interested in, let me konw ...some of these are spares!

Thanks Outlaw! I was really concerned I wasn't going to be able to find space for them. Turned out to be easy peasy. Just waiting for SWMBOUYTSFYOG to notice.

Lugz I did call Forestry Suppliers Inc. Spoke to a young man who when I gave him the number stamped on the front couldn't believe I was calling about a product they "hadn't sold in 6 or 7 years". We chatted about it for awhile and he asked me to hold on while he tried to see if he could find something on it. He was able to find that leather bag which was last sold by them in 1992. He said the b&w catalog targeted the bag at geologists and archaeologists. But I'm sure it was bought by lots of folks in lots of fields who just wanted a good stout leather bag to carry their whatever essentials in. Love the story on Jim Craig. Thanks for sharing!

Seber You ****! And **** again! I'll double your money on that dirty "Ba" grinder! What a find!

Smoke Legit haul there! FWIW I disagree about getting something in trade not counting as a find. You were hunting for the Proto spinner and while you didn't find it in the wild you did find a person who had one to trade. In my eyes, it counts! So congrats!!!

I'm sorry... You have FIVE of these and think that you MIGHT be a collector?????

Joking aside, I love it. How many guys here remember (or don't) the MAJOR problem that happened in the late 70s / early 80s when ALL of the country's gas pumps had to be replaced because they couldn't handle gas prices over 99.9 cents???

Wow SS quite the haul!

Better pics on the hammer head? Looks like a body hammer to me? Planishng and ???
Pictures as asked for. Someone spent a bit of time polishing it to a nice finish. But some ***** put some divots in the face 🙄 still for the price I paid, I will just put a new handle on it and use it. Any idea on the maker? I just rehandled this long straight picking hammer that is a fairmount and painted it to blend in with my other Proto hammers 😂

Here is my part of the haul from yesterdays swap with Smoke:
51853000536_b2a7290e54_c.jpg
Vintage Williams water pump pliers, Wizard ratchet, interesting adjustable alligator wrench, Stanley electrical driver, Plomb rope braid socket, early P&C socket, an almost complete set of Duro ignition wrenches, various magneto wrenches, Bonney and Herbrand ignition wrenches (I bought a small box of ignition wrenches), Fleet and Williams ratchets. I did a little trading with Smoke, and came away with a Hexite wrench and a Penens box with various Penens, P&C, BE, and SK bits. Sorry the pic is such low quality, taking wide-angle shots and then cropping is always a risk.

I picked up this very nice Hy-Score (Diana) air pistol:
51852502157_a390f34771_c.jpg
This thing is massive, a full 15" long! I will need to reseal this one, but it will be great for my basement shooting range (Thanks COVID!)

I also found this old toolbox
51852503847_96d8e90b97_c.jpg
I thought it might be a Snap-on K22, but no such luck. Oh, well, I only spent $2 on it. Still, it's a nice old box.

All in all, a great day.

The loose piece does go with the slide hammer which is a Morgan Kokker, is the end welded on?

Nice haul bmw! I like that air pistol. I'm curious. What makes the Stanley driver an "electrical" one versus just a screwdriver?

You'd think I'd have learned by now. One of these days, maybe. Sigh...

There's been a wooden box of Russell & Jennings advertised on CL for awhile as part of a group of "antique tools". The seller wouldn't sell them separately. She finally agreed to $25 which was high IMO. I went over to see them on Sunday. I wanted to check on how many of the bits were in fact Russell & Jennings. It turned out only two were and those were stamped very differently so probably from different sets. I told her that I couldn't do $25 but I'd do my original offer of $20. She was fine with that. The duct tape around the box would probably have been a clue for a brighter person that there might be more to check than just the number or brand of bits in the box but I wasn't having any of that! As I was exiting the garage I saw a flintlock pistol on top of one of her garbage cans. I picked it up. Heavy and solid. Removed that plastic bag with tape that had been wrapped around the end of the barrel. I ended up giving her the $30 she asked for it. It wasn't until I got home and checked the baggie that I see it had the broken pieces in the pic. That's also when I discovered that the bottom compartment of the box has a crack in the wood at the hinge. The corner completely separates. Took me that long to realize why there was originally duct tape around the box. Even in the original pics! Doh! Sometimes I get so excited about something that my brain just quits working. Dang it!

I know nothing about guns beyond my old squirrel rifle. Is the pistol fixable or can I find parts? I couldn't see a maker stamped anywhere on it. I just hope it isn't a modern remake. Anyone have any idea?

interesting adjustable alligator wrench,
Elgin. Or Star, who made them after Elgin. Three patents/versions, 1897, 1906, and 1913. The first patent drawing had a loop handle, none have been found as far as I know. Second patent variant came in a wood box with insertable dies that went into a die stock provisioned out of that barren hole on yours. Third patent improved the adjusting worm gear guts, but I don't think they ever put that number on the wrench. I don't have an Elgin. I have a similar Kraeuter "VICTOR". That was a Charles S. Bonney patent after he sold Bonney.

Nice find.

Lugz, I will put it in your pile for trade.

TX, it is an electrical driver due to the straight, no flare blade. At least, that is what I was always taught to all a driver like that. And, yes, that muzzleloader is fixable, provided it is a real, quality one and not a repop. What is broken is the frizzen:
51854411688_68476c0103.jpg
Now, the question is, was it made of steel, brass, pot metal or what? It can be brazed, I would assume, but I would start poking around muzzle loading forums, which would put you on the right trail.

The end of the hammer is approx 1"-14 tpi OD threaded, rotating, swaged? on, and the threaded end of the loose piece is about 7/16" ID diameter.

I have not looked for marking on either, thanks for the suggestion of the name.

TL;DR: Cool!

Longer: That was NOT my intent of that quick 411 or my mentioning that I didn't have one. I can talk people out of their find with the best of the chiselers, but honestly, I was just trying to help. In fact, I was just about to post a link to an Elgin thread down on the VB for you to read more and see other examples, but I'll gladly take it off your hands! :)

To be honest Lugz, I bought it as it was different and cheap. It is a bit outside my collecting interests, so no problem (and it gives me leverage...)

Well this is my first entry in a garage sale thread, hopefully someone will appreciate what would normally be considered a pretty boring item, a soldering iron..lol

I needed something a little more heavy duty then my Weller 150/100 and I came across this Hexacon 550 for $20. I knew nothing about it at the time, and it was brand new in the box.

I figured I was getting a pretty good deal considering how heavy duty this thing was, but I had no idea until I got home and googled it. This thing retails for about 390 bucks! :yikes:

The strange part was the seller knew this. As he was plugging it in to show me that it worked, he mentioned these things go for close to $400. I laughed and nodded my head, thinking he was joking. No idea why he sold it for 20 bucks, but I’m pretty sure it should out last me..lol

Doesn’t look brand new after a few hours of use, but what a beast this thing is. I added the other iron to the pic for reference.3D3D9FA4-3874-4F5F-BD45-F93D125895AB.jpeg

Here is my part of the haul from yesterdays swap with Smoke:

This thing is massive, a full 15" long! I will need to reseal this one, but it will be great for my basement shooting range (Thanks COVID!)

I also found this old toolbox

I thought it might be a Snap-on K22, but no such luck. Oh, well, I only spent $2 on it. Still, it's a nice old box.

All in all, a great day.
Heck of a find on that tool box! Major u **** for the price! I am curious to see who made it! That tray with the folding handles is probably going to help identify it!

As for my haul from that sale, a random assortment of tools and things from the man’s tool chest and other boxes. A Kennedy Kits box. I like the clips in there, they remind me of my piano teacher, he used to give them to me for my books. Also had the neat little two baby knives set in it.

i feel kind of winded after that last post But some Klein, Craftsman, PK Neuses, US stamped brass lock, a cool bar clamp, etc..

Now I know why there was little for me to buy, you got there first.
Didn’t we have a conversation about you coming on my side of the river for sales?🤣🤣
I’m sorry I missed the party, I generally will speak up and suggest they leave also. I’ve on more than occasion “become” a family member in times like that.

Oh, I went back this past weekend, you left a Snap On wrench wrap and two brand new hole saws!🤣

Well this is my first entry in a garage sale thread, hopefully someone will appreciate what would normally be considered a pretty boring item, a soldering iron..lol

I don't think it's shootable at all because I don't see a flash hole, which is what the ignited powder in the pan goes through to ignite the powder in the barrel. Here's a pic from my dad's repop Belgian musket from the 1970s.

That soldering iron is awesome, Roger! Out of curiosity, what did you use it on?
Soldering lipo batteries for Rc trucks. It’s overkill, but this is the garage journal way right? Lol

From what I’ve read, they’re designed to solder sheet metal, copper plates, and roof flashing.
