Not really a garage sale find.
I was looking for a small roll cab for the basement and came across this on Facebook marketplace. Listing had two pictures, one of the tool cabinet and one with an open drawer with some tools inside. So I go check out. Williams cabinet and all five drawers are full. 11 ratchets, 4 breaker bars, 21 extensions, at least 200 sockets, 60+ wrenches, 5 adjustable wrenches, a few screwdrivers, 3 pipe wrenches, nut drivers, Allen wrenches, tubing cutters, vice grips and a bunch of other stuff. 95% Craftsman stuff. All for $200. 9701767E-BE43-4E9A-BC74-444C2E511703.jpeg315783D0-B6E7-4FDD-9C87-9BF6ED822A80.jpeg8E6E2545-761F-4944-8724-525D194D700B.jpegDB183839-430A-45F8-9433-65FC7360C11D.jpegFCF55EC4-F438-4919-ACDE-8E2B39FA51BF.jpegE3183C61-CDBA-4182-8FA4-EA2F427BE52A.jpeg4C447BD7-C28B-49C8-9304-0845CE940733.jpeg

Man, you guys... OR, BMW, Sauket, D42, BMW (Again...) I'm STILL looking for a Flex Speeder. To actually use... I thought I had one but If I did/do I can't find it... IO don't get many flats but one of those makes it a LOT faster to change The tire... Break it loose and speed it off...

I had a decent day locally for once!

On;y one dud in the list, but the yard sale across the street made up for it!

First stop A couple of books and new fiber wheel for a drill -$2:

YS1 Books Fiber wheel.jpg

The dud sale's "backup": Solengen Rostfrei, carving set - ignore the fingerprints, this had never been used or sharpened.
And the deer etched in was a PLUS and I like the Staghorn for knife grips.
The glass boats are technically ashtrays, but I liked em. (Not a smoker) Ten bucks all.

YS2 Carve sey. Glass Boats.jpg YS2 Stag.jpg

Score of the Day: All For $5 at an estate sale

Note the Craftsman Ratchet - the Top one is BlackHawk below it is Snap on, Proto, A Blackhawk Combo, SO, Billings Igniitn, and and an SK Philips to the side, extension mirror and magnet picker-upper - needs the ball linkage to be complete... MORE Binder Clips 24 of the size I use camping.

ES1 Rats, Wrenches Mag Mirror Clips.jpg

Plus this Titan (Taiwan) Bit driver ratchet - I've been wanting one of these since I first saw one posted. 60T, and TINY it is also available as a 1/4" drive.

It missed the pic above as I had dropped it in the rig and had to go search for it!

EDIT - and thank god for an inventory when I CRS! I HAVE the 1/4" drive version already! so I have the "Set" now!

And a delivery of a lantern I got from a CCF buddy - a 242B - So far unsuccessful at finding a date code. :dunno:
This one needs a LOT of cosmetic work, but its operations as is once the pump adn cap gaskets are replaced.

So I have 3 project lanterns the 220L from last weekend, this one, and a Franken-lantern project I finally got the hard parts for - I'll need to order a mica globe for that one and make a special collar..

Like Outlaw, I've been skunked the prior 2 weekends, nothing even worth driving out to, nothing in the "it's local, we'll go" distance. This garage sale was not on CL, only on YS Treasure Map, and near where we needed to go anyways. Our first retail stop had a huge queue to get in, so we went 1/2 mile uphill to this garage sale. Dad had passed away, and wife and daughter were liquidating his things. Seemed like a talented man, by trade appeared to be a Bridge and Iron fabricator welder, by hobby, cars and motorcycles. Wife said he had had a Covettte in the little garage for a while, and lots of goodies in the dirt floored basement beside it. Lots of car and motorcycle parts and a few catalogs and books, but nothing of my interests. Lots of fun stuff left behind, just cuz I knew I'd never need it. 3/4" - 1" Allen wrenches, UV inspection lamp, a few other goodies. The ladies were still putting things out, so I stuck my head into a box of Antique Tools, was told $0.50 - 1.00 each, so non chalantly asked about the Bench grinder stand I had seen in the basement. Mom was "I'll take $20", daughter says "How much will you offer?" So the obvioius answer was $20, and it was mine. About 50#, but only 31" high to the top of the platform, much to low for comfortable work. I may look to see if I can find a piece of heavy tubing to replace it, make it grow up a bit.. 3.5" OD on the column.

At this point, I made a sweep through 2 other carry boxes, grab a few goodies, adn then back into the bench in the garage, and found the SK Dresser 1610 miniature set. Through all the goodies into the bag in fron of wife, and wandered off to take a 3rd look around. Came back to check out, and the total was only slightly more than the grinder stand alone, so I was quite pleased.

The box of Akro bins came from a CL posting, and was more than I paid for everything else. I am making a space for a cabinet with slide out shelves, and these will fit nicely, though deeper ones would be better.

The full haul

Akro Bins, Proto Stanley catalog, 2x metal cylinders, Herbrand "Van Chrome" 1723 and Proto LA 3020 wrenches, saw jointer, IOB 1/2 82° countersink, Starrett 18A auto punch, RotoBor 1-3/16" drill for thin metals , box of screws, not what the exterior says, SK Dresser 1610 Miniature set, missing one 1710 5" ignition pliers, 3x metal polishing Griot's pads, 18" MF Brace bit extension, long tipped 12V idiot light w curled cord.

It depends on the brick, and equally so on the quarry tile.
Face brick is high-fire ceramic / vitrified, making it impermiable. I think this is the type gpw_42 meant.
There are also many low-fire ceramic bricks for various applications, and brick-shaped pavers, which are concrete-based (not ceramic), all of which will wick moisture.
The quarry tiles I have seen are terra cotta (a low-fire clay base) with an applied sealer (possibly an acrylic), making the finished surface water-resistant, but not the clay body. If the sealer were scratched or otherwise failed, they would wick moisture.
I guess I should have gone into more detail. You are correct that some tiles are porous and will wick water. The ones I have are very hard, obviously high-fired, and impervious. I call them quarry tiles because I think that's the term I've heard applied to non-glazed tiles of similar appearance. The quick test would be to sprinkle a few drops of water and see whether it soaks in.

Here is the stuff from yesterday, today I spent a lot of time and gas driving around for a few old pieces of rusty junk. I'll post that other stuff when I get around to it.

First is a sale that I thought I'd be clever and show up an hour early. Seems I'm not the first with that thought...I was #44 on the list, but they handled it well and I was inside within an 1/2 hour so of opening. This was an interesting sale, the guy was a dentist and had a lot of machinist stuff that he obviously used for work. By the time I got down there I was pretty much dealing with dregs but this guy had a tendency to store stuff on the wall, and so I was able to grab a few bits.

Up top is an SK steering wheel puller I think, I have no idea if this is all the stuff or not. The little wrenches have Mac, P&C, and a few others. The little depth gauges are 1/2 generic 1/2 Starrett. Was pleasantly surprised to pull the Snap on stuff off the pegboard, I saw one of the early guys and he had a whole tray of it...Dentists. Anyway the little 1/4 inch stuff is Plomb and then the big craftsman combos are the older style. Got lucky as the tool guy started off with 5 bucks a piece for 3 of the wrenches, I thought I was going to have to put some stuff back. Then he charged me another $5 or so for everything else, so I shut up and paid. $22 all in.

IMG_3823.jpg

Next sale I got kinda caught up and way overpaid. Oh well, that's how it goes.

The True Temper Flint Edge roofing hatchet needs a new handle but is in great shape. I was excited about this Williams box and not paying more attention led to me paying too much for all the Williams sockets here as I assumed they belonged in the box. After further examination I'm pretty sure it was only one size of socket in the box. Still a cool box though! The Indestro, Sk, and P&C sockets were also expensive, but the Plomb was worth it as usual, this one is marked NAF and USN.

Driver is Proto, that and the Vacuum Grip pliers were good finds in the dollar box. The 5449 was more than I usually like to spend on a ratchet but I couldn't help it. I might actually put this one in my user set as the Plomb ratchets are really smooth IMO.

I think I spent around $40 on this batch, damn new tool guy putting prices on everything :cautious:

After spending all morning buying a new truck, I was able to hit a couple sales in the PM. They were both sales that I had been to the day before, but you take what you can get.

The red box is, I am guessing, an old Challenger socket box without the insert, and that and most of the stuff on top came from a garage sale. The sockets are Plomb, Snap-on, SK, P&C (including seven 5/16"!), Challenger, Blackhawk by Proto, Proto, There is a Stanley #18 bevel gauge, and a little leather flip Allen key holder. All that was $5.

The other stop was an estate that I stopped at the day, but today was 50% day, so I did a little more digging. And I picked up the blue set box above, which is an Indestro MPI box, sans MPI. Also, the Herbrand DBE Chevy main bearing wrench shown above. And I picked this up:

A vintage camp stove! These are from the thirties, and this one is in good shape, once you get down past the grime. It has the original pump, everything moves as it should, and most of the paint is in good shape. All of that set me back $11.50.

On a sad note, I had to give up my beloved stick shift yesterday. Due to health reasons, I am switching to an automatic, which I have only done in the past when I was commuting in and out of the Bay Area. So it goes. Aging ain't for the weak.

Sorry to hear you had to go Auto BMW!

But very cool find on the PW Auto-Cook BMW! Am I reading an 8 for the model no.? Any Letter? It may be late 20's if not.

If you need lighting instructions, let me know. If it doesn't have a nice blue flame once warmed up it's likely cobwebs inside the mixing chamber.

I left behind this APCO-marked Cunha patent ratchet. After some research, I went back the next day, but could not make myself pay $20 for it, partly because it is pitted and possibly damaged near the pivot, and mostly because it does not have the hex plug, and is bundled with a very pedestrian L-handle set. The “extension” is just a cut-off hex bar with no stops or detents.

Love the Wentworth vise, especially just mounted to a handy off cut. I keep one of my saw videos mounted like that for slapping in any handy vise.

I am a little bit excited with this addition to my Long-C Craftsman collection, that I have not even itemized the individual sockets yet. All of the sockets/tools on the left are BE, and all of the ones on the right are Circle-H. I just thought I’d share a few photos before I even sit down and look at them more deeply (or count them!).

Was out of town at the coast this weekend with my wife and we hit up an estate sale. Found these 2 Proto adjustable wrenches for $2. 6” is a clickstop, 8” is mfd marked. Wrenches obviously were not cared for and may have permanent cosmetic issues but I figured for the cost, I couldn’t say no. Both move so worst case scenario they go in vehicle tool kits. Got them buzzed down and ready for an evaporust bath

Whew, now I don't feel guilty about going up to Hillsdale and buying all the Plomb at the sale there!
Glad you did😂👍! I was out of town and thought that one might have been a good sale! Glad you got a new tool hauler as well! Shouldn’t have any trouble filling it up with good stuff this summer! That will be a good trip

Last week I had a yard sale and did decent. A variety of characters and lookers. Some decent sales, but I didn’t put out anything too great. Sold 3 vises, 5 cast iron pans, probably 10 Vise Grips, lots of small tools, a few toys, books, antiques, etc..

This week I made a few Friday and Saturday stops.

First was a Habitat I’ve never been too. Been meaning to get to this one, it’s in an old downtown setting. I asked the cashier about tools and she said they’re upstairs. UPSTAIRS! The building was everything I imagined including a creaky old floor! The tools and place in general seemed well picked but it wasn’t a disappointment.

Two Plomb sockets, a Vaco short blade, another Neuses cable tool to add to the one from a few weeks ago, a PowrKraft 8 point, and Duro looking hex plug.4CDBA4FE-680B-4754-A081-A03E65228444.jpeg

The big find may have been an old Corbin box of vintage Sunbeam clipper blades. Those still with the tins are pretty cool.

Went to a small popup one day flea market on a tip, but it was too small and pretty lame. One seller with tools. Managed to find a few neat things.

Blue Point combo, Ford doe, Cornwell pin spanner, Vaco and PowrKraft offsets, PowrKraft and Southern Electric Co tapes,
and a Behler Young Co Whatsit??? Looks like half advertising/half gauge of sorts. Marked on both sides, back needs cleaning up though.

FBE78825-B21A-47B2-8F8E-94ACDA2A6F0F.jpeg

After that sale I decided to go to a regular flea market.
Craftsman neon driver, t handle, long C short dbe. German Chrom Vanadium short dbe, unbranded cast iron griddle, Snap On pick, P S &W pliers with fist logo, and an interesting spring loaded 3 jaw puller.
60B6E51A-5D30-4323-9C2D-0B57EAB99466.jpeg

PS&W fist logo, kinda hard to see

FB0E91D2-C0AB-4D00-97E4-F7181F7FDBF6.jpeg

Had to buy the puller after I rubbed off some grit and saw a name behind the screw.

FORD script stamp!

This needs some cleaning up. Sorry about the crappy pics.

Well the adjustables are badged Proto but where made by jp Danielson I believe. ( I can’t remember but this topic has been covered). Others can chime in. I think lugz has this on lock?

Nice find! I have yet to see one in the wild. Couple on GJ. Very Eifel-like.
Yes, the pliers look like they would work well. They don't look cheap to manufacture so that might be why they faded away.

They are marked Dover, O. and my immediate thought was "tools made in Oregon?" But then googling showed it was Ohio which made more sense!

AA site states that Plomb sourced adjustables from Danielson starting in the mid-40s then acquired Danielson in 1947. This is also the period of other acquisitions, the Plumb lawsuit, and the transition to Proto, Penens, Pendleton.

Clik-Stop was TM'd in 1958, first use 1957, and adjustable wrenches bearing that name were made by Pendleton Tool Industries Inc., at the plant formerly owned by J.P. Danielson, and they were branded Proto, PENENS, Fleet, Challenger, etc, and even Vlchek, just like the adjustables made by PTII in the former JPD plant from late 1946 through 1956, before the Clik-Stop name. (There never was a company called Proto. When Pendleton was sold to Ingersoll-Rand in 1974, it became a division.)
AA site states that Plomb sourced adjustables from Danielson starting in the mid-40s then acquired Danielson in 1947.
AA is wrong. It's double-whammy logic. They base that statement on having an adjustable dated 11/46. 'Oh, look, that's before they bought them, and since it stands to reason they were buying things before they bought them, and we don't really know how much earlier before they bought them, we'll just say mid-40's.' The problem is their acquisition date is wrong. The Plomb Tool Company bought J.P. Danielson in October 1946. So, not only do they have the acquisition date wrong, but that error leads them to a second hugely erroneous conclusion. Utica was supplying Plomb before they bought JP Danielson. Nobody has ever found or seen a Plomb adjustable made by J.P. Danielson with a date code that precedes the acquisition date. I have tried to correct them, but they won't listen. It's #7 on a list of umpteen things they won't listen to, leading a whole community astray.

On Sunday drove out the last day of what was a pretty good tool sale, as an excuse to drive my new truck...
51910554586_4d0c696cd1_c.jpg
Even though the sale had been going on for three days at that point, there was still a lot of good stuff: a Fleet metric set missing the ratchet, a handful of Proto mfd sockets, two Armstrong SOEs, SK diamond extension, Bridgeport hand chuck, Stanley 9" level, 1/2" socket tray, and a roll of cork.

After that, I stopped at another sale, the final day of a "man's" sale. Should have hit this earlier, lots of interesting stuff it looks like. I bought a handmade five-drawer machinists/parts cabinet which I already put into storage, so no pic, but I did pull the best stuff out of it:
51909627937_b72b784095_c.jpg
After sorting out all of the used-up saw blades, odd screws bolts, and whatnot, here is what I am left with: three electric motor bolts, a Starret inside micrometer w/ misc lengths, combo square scribe, misc. bulbs, Micrometer wrenches, Lufkin decimal chart, Starrett 6" scale, conical bullet, solderer tip, small hardy, metal scroll saw blades, Lufkin fish, a pair of countersinks (not sure about one), files (triangle, ignition, needle), Irwin and Goodell Pratt drivers, hacksaw blade holder, Pfluger washers, hammer wedges, Buss fuses, Stanley soft tips (small), leather punches, misc. screws, .22 bore brush, India stone, Long C chisel, and some rubber furniture/box feet. I love going through old toolboxes, you never know what you will find!

I saw this on FBMP and jumped on it. The ad has only been up 8 minutes. I thought it was a Wilton. It just looks like a Wilton. Still, an 8” vise with pipe jaws and a swivel base. Paid $150. If it was a vintage Wilton it would have been worth $2k. 6BF8C14F-F5FF-40B2-BF70-F81B9E449860.jpeg

What makes you think it's not a Wilton? Is there a different brand on it?

I don't know of too many Wiltons worth $2k. That is a nice tradesman though. Nice pick!

I did see 1780 cast into the vise, it’s just that I didn’t see Wilton on there anywhere.

A far as the $2k value. This 6” sold for $1.6k on eBay recently, so I assumed that an 8” would go for more. This one is not vintage or special, so probably more like $500. 474167E7-C587-4583-9B10-A63E33620D4F.png

Thats a Wilton C3. It's one of their machinist vises. Those are on a whole other level than the tradesman series. For an example your 8" 1780 weighs about a hundred pounds. I have a Wilton 800s 8" that's around 230lbs. Big difference in mass.
