Over the last few days, I finished up the transmission replacement on our Passat. I've driven about 120 miles with the "new" transmission and it makes it a whole different vehicle. No driveline noise, smoother shifts, very nice!

Replacement Transmission going in.jpg replacement transmisison and new flex joints in place.jpg

There were several issues with the old transmission:
The clutch release bearing had failed (it's face had worn off and fallen apart - this likely led to insufficient release of the clutch and the creep I could still get while in gear with the clutch pressed in at a stop. It also made Reverse and First gear shifts tough)...
bad clutch release bearing.jpg

The bearing cage for the input shaft bearing had broken apart - so the ball bearings were not evenly spaced around the shaft and this allowed for play on the input shaft (this is what I think was the biggest contributor to the driveline noise, as it varied with engine speed, not wheel speed)...
bad input shaft bearing and bearing cage.jpg good input shaft bearing and bearing cage.jpg

And the synchros for 3rd and 4th gear were worn to where it would pop out of 4th (this started happening last summer) or 3rd (that started more recently) gear while under load.

Next to the engine replacements on my son's Equinox, this transmission replacement was the biggest job I've tackled on a vehicle.

Started a test bed of home automation with a switch in the garage. We often discover after we're in bed that someone has left the outside spot light on. Garage isn't much to write home about yet. More on that in another post soon enough.

Succcessful first test. Spotlight was off when I left the house before dinner tonight. When I turned into the driveway after dinner, the light turned on. Love the geofencing so far. I'll never have to get out of bed to go out into a cold garage just to turn off a light again!

After adding powpaks and picos to my garage I found I can turn the lights on and off from anywhere in the house, even though the garage is detached and 30 feet from the house. 👍👍

Nothing yet. Awaiting parts and tools to continue either project (impala transmission or Cummins VP44 swap).

Stagnated on the impala trans because I will have to push it out to push the Cummins in if I want to work on it indoors. Otherwise I’ll have to figure out how to get it through the muddy mess into the pole barn.

I did go out there for oven cleaner to clean my stove, saw a bunch of flies on the windows, so I sprayed them with some flying insect killer. I’m betting they’re coming from whatever is dead under the house. The smell wafts in and out. I thought it was gone, but it came back. Not as bad, but it’s there. I’m hoping it dries out soon. I’ve crawled everywhere under the house looking for it. Stuck the inspection camera in all the offending vents. It’s nowhere to be found.

How about the dryer duct or a bathroom vent duct?

How about the dryer duct or a bathroom vent duct?
The dryer duct leads directly outside from the laundry room. The laundry room is an “addition” to the house. And it’s on the complete opposite side to where the smell is coming through. I basically have a quadruple wide trailer. Looking at it from the top, the long part north/south narrow part east/west, it goes east to west: (1) mud room (2) half the house (3) other half of the house (4) kitchen and laundry room. The smell is coming from (2). Bathroom is on (3).

As far as the smell coming from the bathroom vent, that would seem logical, as there’s no cap on it, so a critter could have crawled down it.

But, the smell only comes from the vents on the (2) section of the house. If I get on the floor and smell the vents, I can smell the smell. If I smell the vents on (3), I cannot smell the smell. And the smell does not come into the laundry room that basically has an open floor to the crawl space. Yeah, I haven’t fixed that yet. I found out why it’s like that. The well inlet comes in there. If you closed the floor, there’s be no access for repairs and such. So I need to figure out a way to enclose the floor, but leave access to the well lines.

As far as what else I did today, more parts arrived for the Cummins. So I tried starting it, to move it into the pole barn. I ran a large extension cord out to the pole barn and hung a LED light. But the Cummins didn’t start. Dead in the water.

Started wrenching on it, then it started to rain. So I’ll have to finish tomorrow if the gear puller arrives. I checked all my gear pullers and I don’t have anything remotely close. So I ordered one.

Didn’t do much IN the garage. Grabbed a couple bags of trash out of there. Gonna load up some more trash from the yard/house and make a dump run tomorrow. Now it’s dinner time and I’m not sure what I want to make lol

Last week I got my long awaited electric garage heater all hooked up but I was having problems with the cheap Honeywell mechanical thermostat. It was not switching off cleanly and was chattering my contactor. Today I replaced the thermostat with a King electronic thermostat which so far seems to be doing a lot better.

1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue is having internal engine tapping issues.
We stopped driving as soon as issue surfaced, close to 100K.
99 intregue.jpg

Todays used car market make this a no brainer to spend the money and fix the engine.
With help of a mechanic friend the engine was opened up....
engine3.jpg

Pulled the internals down to the cams....
head components.jpgintake.jpg

Have plenty of gaskets to order, fluids to buy, and some deep investigating to do.
intake2.jpg

Not sure what is happening with the top end lubrication issues yet, checking all the oil ports in cam, rods, etc....
More to follow.....

Unloaded a hydraulic cylinder from Dad's truck. He would like some help rebuilding the unit. I hope it is a straight forward seal install, but I might need to make some new spacers. She's an older unit with V-Pack seals.

Drained the fuel out of the motorcycle tank so I can swap tanks later this week.

We're going camping this weekend, so I'll be spending some time going through our checklist to make sure nothing's disappeared from our camping gear.

I keep trying to talk the wife into letting me buy a Yurt. She keeps saying no.

Got the old VP44 pulled. Had to do it in the driveway in front of the garage. Now it’s “break” time so I can warm up. I couldn’t feel my fingers or toes!

On the bright side, it was as I thought. Everyone kept saying it could be a fuel line, banjo bolt washer, etc etc. But after pulling it, there’s this broken cap, where fuel was pouring out. Now I don’t feel so bad about dropping the $2k on it. I was gonna be SICK if it ended up being a cracked hose where I couldn’t see it hahaha

Setup my new Ryobi Drill bench top drill press and a Bauer Belt/Disc combo sander. Been working on some vise restorations and its nice to have a decent sander now to help clean up parts so I'm not doing it all by hand.

Making molds to cast concrete wall capstones and oversized bullnose 'pencil liner' pieces, for trimming out a back patio planter wall. Need about 60LF.
The capstone mold is about 2'L x 8"W x 2-5/8"H and has bullnose edges and a shallow convex top, so it will be comfortable to sit on.
The pencil liver pieces will run along the bottom edges of the wall, against the slab. With some 18"x18" faux travertine ceramic tile on the walls between these pieces.

Had some trouble (still do, but different) with the capstone mold, I used a thin PVC sign to make the curved shape for the top then tried to shore that up with some casting resin so ~45# of concrete could get slung in the mold and the heat of the curing resin made the plastic wavy. This first concrete casting is to create the casting buck for silicone mold making (x3). So the cast concrete piece will need to be corrected, with either bondo or drywall mud and sanding to rectify the top surface. No big deal, every casting buck needs finessing.

Last evening I cast the pencil liner gang mold with silicone, to make the production mold and it came out great. Had a tough time getting the tough rubber free at first, but really happy with it.
All the silicone molds will get used 10-11 times. If I'm careful enough they will last. And they had better. This A-B RTV costs about $1 / ounce.
But that is relatively inexpensive on the pencil liners, as stone tile pieces are about $1 / inch. So the $60 pencil mold and about $20 worth of dyed concrete will be about 15% the cost of real stone pieces. And look very similar.

Making the first concrete casts in both mold sets Friday morning. A week from now I should be in production.

I keep trying to talk the wife into letting me buy a Yurt. She keeps saying no.

I made a replacement car top tent out of Wool Blankets on the principle that the Bedouin and Yurt dwellers know more about tents than anyone. It has a second top made of the rip stop rain fly material. I LOVE that tent. Warm, it breathes, and I don't get condensation at all. Even better, I don't freeze my sinuses in cold weather...

I wasn’t going to go back out there this afternoon, as it was CHILLY!

Powered through it, and got the new VP44 installed. Truck runs now, and moves under its own power. Fuel pressure is still ****, but I have a new lift pump to install. I’m gonna shoot for tomorrow to get the lift pump installed, but might not be until Sunday. I have some traveling to do in the next couple of days, so this project may be on hold.

If the weather cooperates tomorrow though, or even if NOT, I can now put the truck in the pole barn for some shelter.

As far as INSIDE the garage, just the usual clean up after a project. Wipe down tools, put tools away, throw away garbage, etc etc. nothing too strenuous! Lol

I spent the evening going through my camping checklist. Somehow some of our camping gear had managed to make its way into the kids' playroom. Luckily my son knew where all of it was. (he's the one that took it)

I unwrapped my new to me ratchet. Then proceeded to carry it around with me the rest of the evening.
That’s badass lol

As far as what I did, the “tube seal” for the air compressor arrived today. I actually ordered 3, just because it took YEARS to find these ones. So now I have spares, should it happen again. Or I can find broken air compressors needing these seals lol.

Got the compressor together and it still only went up to 80psi. Took the cover off the limit switch, and there were tamper marks on the limit screw (my buddy Paul attempted repair YEARS ago. He probably lowered the limit(?)).

Adjusted the limit screw to 120psi, though the manufacturers recommendations of 125 psi MAX were printed on the side. Max CFM looks to be at 90psi. Hopefully the lower PSI helps extend the life of the seals and everything haha.

Next, gotta order a new drain valve. It got busted somewhere along the way. Oof.

I rolled my daughter's car in. It appears to have a failing throw-out bearing. I'm anticipating TO bearing, clutch disk, pressure plate and most likely a clutch release fork. While I'm in there, it'll get valve cover gaskets, spark plug tubes, plugs and I think there's a pinhole in the coolant crossover pipe.

Since the engine has to come out anyhow, the ancillary stuff will be a lot easier while it's out.
Who knew being retired was so much work?

Day 4, walked into shop, turned on compressor and it did not run. Leaks fixed.

Ran both pressure washers I have been working on and both work. Posted FS after washing the DD.

Started cleaning up the shop for a new arrival coming next week. Flipping Big mess to deal with. Need to make my project car a roller and consolidate its parts. Get it OFF the lift where its been for 7 months.

Yesterday and today just been training the new guy. Today unloaded his box. He bought the 5 drawer cart and loaded it up. It was very heavy lifting out of the back of his truck. He is switching to automotive from machining. He had to settle for green because it was the only color they had they told him we only have 13 green ones in stock and no other colors. He wanted the new grey. So far he is doing just fine. Really only thing I had to correct is when we were replacing a hub assembly he started hammering away on the braking surface of the rotor with a sledge hammer so I had to tell him that you can’t do that. He has never even changed oil before he has changed valve cover gaskets and stuff like that. He was excited to use his shiny new tools I told him go ahead I’ll watch lol 😂. That was for simple stuff like oil changes or whatever because I don’t feel like doing those lol. I showed him how to do two then he seemed pretty confident and wanted to do it so I let him and just checked over everything. I also showed him how to use anti seize and brake lubricant as he hadn’t used them before. I’m having fun doing it. Funny thing is my first and middle name is Blake Aaron and his first and middle name is Aaron Blake so we feel like we are meant to be 🤣. That’s what everyone at the shop is saying lol 😂. They also love now that they have Balakay A-A Ron and A-A Ron Balakay lol. So really I’m just training right now. I don’t mind doing it I actually like it because it gives me someone to work with.
