That's the one, Outlaw. Thorsen Speed-Hed. Wilder patent 2,652,735 (Sep 22, 1953). I've been waiting for examples of a different maker and patent from a former GJer to publish my study on this type of wrench, but it doesn't look like they'll be forthcoming. I wanted to have examples of every version I studied, but I may just publish without an example in hand for that brand.

Sort of… Not Thorsen, but Black Hawk
What's so funny about going from Thorsen "Speed-Hed" to Peugeot "Surpans" (literally "Across-the-Flanks") to the New Britain and Blackhawk "Nutmaster" in ID'ing your wrench is how telling it is about the separation of patents in this entire group. I won't drag the thread down, and I want to save it for the right thread anyway, but mapping the citations was the most interesting part of the research. Diebold and Wilder both cited what I think is the very first of its kind, in the 19th century, and from a very unlikely location.

Hit a quick sale within a few miles of the house .First decent sale of the long weekend. missed out on a few of the tools that were in the ad(Plomb breaker) but was able to bring home the Craftsman DOEs ,another Craftsman Combo square,thats 2 within a week,and my 5th push drill in less than a week ,this time a Fulton with a capful of bits, and a Wardsmaster breaker bar. Sale had a lot of WarsMaster/Speedmaster sockets and wrenches. Guessing he shopped at Montgomery Wards often.

I haven't been to any garage or other sales lately because of moving, reorganizing, and having a sale of our own. But I did happen to stop at a convenient sale an picked up an anvil for $25. It's a bit rough because it appears someone used a torch along one side of it, probably used the anvil as a support to cut things with the torch. But it's usable for my purposes, and it's a 140 pound Peter Wright anvil.

Today was my first day leaving the house in almost three weeks, but this is part of the healing process. Little bits of movement, not too much siting, zero stretching at this time. So, going stir crazy, I GOT OUT. Fortunately, there was what looked like a good sale not too far away, being held by a company I kind of like. So, off I went, planning to arrive around an hour after it started. I couldn't have picked a better plan. Good sale with lots of tools I like, decent prices, not much I saw in the ads taken, and not too many people. The staff even helped a gent like me, pointing out where there could be walking issues.

Williams extension, Massive homemade mallet (seriously, the thing extends for another 8" out of the photo), Hinsdale 1-1/4", Goodell Pratt drill driver, two vintage drawer locks, a handful of miniature wrenches (2xArmstrong Hexite, BluePoint, Chrome Vanadium tool Co., King **** !) and books

Stickley catalog reference, a book on wood ID, and best of all, a pre-WWI flyer for the west coast Shasta train trip, going from SF/Oakland to Portland. The one thing I was hopping to find, and had seen in the photos online, was a huge Stanley reference book, but that was gone by the time I got there. Se la vie.

I then stopped at a bust of a sale, and followed it up with a trip to a Restore, finding this:
52185534804_5fa35327cc_c.jpg
Unmarked auger bit set, with two specialty bits. I had planned two more stops, but was pretty worn out at this point, so headed home.

Surgery. My L4-5 disc was massively herniated, with the bulge causing nerve impingement on my left leg. No lifting more than 5lbs for a month (wife is NOT happy about that!) and then I got hit with the covid bug. Tomorrow my stiches come out. I have a ton of stuff I picked up just before this whole thing was scheduled, but haven't even gotten down to the shop to take pics yet, and I think there is still some stuff on the passenger seat of the truck.
I feel your pain - luckily mine didn't require hack 'n slash, good as new many years later. Hope for a good outcome for you too!

Pulled a few wrenches out of a nice Kennedy box at the flea this morning (Lugz 2022_32). SK, Herbrand, Plomb, and one from a 4-pc Ronson Art Metal Works kit that I am trying to complete. Pretty sure it's a dupe, and not the one I need, unfortunately. Trade/flip material.

That Goodell Pratt screwdriver pre-dates the Yankee double spiral design. The handful I've seen were all marked Goodell Bros., and were thus 1890s. Is that one actually Goodell Pratt?

I would have had a hard time leaving that nice Kennedy carry box behind unless the price was out of line!
We hit a couple of disappointing Tahoe sales but didn’t get anything worth mentioning.

I really liked it, especially the layout of the removable tray, and that little name plate, and while I see dozens of their machinists chests every year, and, as you know, have one (a Bighorn), I don't recall ever seeing a big carry box like this before, but it was a little more than I was looking to spend, and I'm trying to cut back on extra boxes.

I have three Kennedy boxes like that (plus a Union GMTK box) that contain the Barcalo shrine. They are great heavy duty boxes.

Looks like slim pickings tomorrow (typical 3 day W/E) unless I want to travel - and I don't with sky high gas prices...

I have picked a few things off Eprey, Mostly tings I'm not likely to find in the wild, and are either projects or for a project:

Both these Knives. I got a surprise on the Camelus 1011 - I'd never realized the guard piece was plated plastic. I'd assumed it was tarnished aluminum. I wanted it as its got a really small blade and I like a knife with a small blade. Oh well it will still serve. (his one is getting a custom sheath and going on the suspenders I use camping up on the shoulder). The other I knew was a project, but I loved the "palm swell" stag grip it was loose when I got it, and I need to de-rust it, so I pulled it apart for the initial tang cleanup; The blade will get de-rusted, sanded progressively fine until it can be polished and then sharpened and reassembled. While the blade style is not my favorite, it is very thin and I like that for sharpening and staying sharp; Solingen steel so it should be good.

Knives.jpg

That palm swell fits me perfect!

Knife grip.jpg

Another project - an old Lyman American 4X scope that someone rattle canned to go on presumably a SS rifle? I'll remove the paint... Post reticle which I like for hunting.

scope.jpg

And another Project - I got the basic lantern (made in Denmark) last winter off Eprey, as it has a round wick, and makes more light - the Chimney I had to hunt for and was another more recent Eprey buy - this is a Kosmos type burner and without a flame spreader needs that odd chimney. the "venturii" lets the flame burn very high, so more light. The chimney is supposed to be taller, but Liked it in this short form so I can make a box and take this camping.

Lantern.jpg

And some special metals: the tin is for tinning copper pots (Unsure if I'll melt tin or tin plate yet - I may try both...), and the cerro-safe for casting a gun chamber to find out the cartridge. Very low temp melting. 1 Lb each.

I pushed my self yesterday, as there was a sale that looked interesting, and I kind of wanted to get back to the good sale from the day before. I am glad I did, but it wiped my out, and I am not going out today. Which is no big loss. Anyhoo...

The first sale had a lot of interesting, vintage radio things, which is always a good sign in my book. I picked up these vintage aftermarket manuals, a Craftsman BE and Xcelite 99 set:

The estate sale coughed up the following:
52187978327_829da14efd_c.jpg
Stanley no.4 type 11, Stanley burnisher, two Armstrong sockets, Mossberg el, Blue Point and Chromium Vanadium ignition wrenches. The Schrade hone steel and oiler bottle were left in my truck from before.

Took me a while to clean up my Thursday haul from the west side of S.A. It was a large garage and had both old and modern tools, both hand and power tools. I immediately snagged the set of four Indestro wrenches (missing one), $4, followed by the Bet'r Grip 6" adjustable, $1 and the 4" Ridge, $0.50. There was a lot of stuff I would have scarfed up in the past, but I'm trying to pace myself these days.

30 Jun 22.jpg

Some more judicious poking around turned up the H.K.Porter-made crimpers with the Bell Systems stamp, $2. The Pyrene One Quart Hand Fire Extinguisher with wall mount was $8.

30 Jun 22d.jpg 30 Jun 22e.jpg

I almost didn't find the find of the day. I (and 15 other guys) walked by it a dozen times as it lurked on a low portion of a shelf against the wall. Thick with the dust and grime of a couple of decades, it blended perfectly into its surroundings. After recognizing the rectangular shape of a possible socket set, I opened it to find it stuffed to the gills with stuff. Everything not mentioned already was in the box--along with a healthy helping of dirt and leaves. $5.

The intended contents of the case was a near-complete J.H. Williams S-4 socket set from the late '50s. The set is missing two sockets, the ST-1230 and ST-1218--neither of which I have in my spares pile... Considering the condition when first opened, they cleaned up very nicely. Of course, I forgot to take a before picture until I had emptied the dirt and leaves and started on the largest socket.

30 Jun 22a.jpg 30 Jun 22b.jpg 30 Jun 22c.jpg

In addition to the socket set, the case contained:
Craftsman =V= 3/8 ratchet w/ V selector
CM =V= 1/2d 3" extension
CM =V= 1/2d Deep socket, 3/4
CM =V= 1/2d socket, 7/16
CM =V= 1/2d universal
S-K 1/2d 40122
Snap-on 3/8d Hex 15mm
Thorsen 1/4d Hex 3/16"

Today was a real soaker at the flea market. Not rain, but the sweat. 😓 I tried hard not to drip all over the merchandise. :lol:

I was so happy to find the little Bohn quick adjustable wrench. Also some nice little Plombs for cheap. I must have been riding the wave Lugz started with the 5/16.

All from the same vendor came the two Plomb ignition wrenches, shorty dbe, and 5/16 x 1/4 doe, the Bohn, long Cornwell wrench, Ampco dbe, and John Deere combo.

Other tables netted the short Dowidat 14x15 dbe, an unusual find of a Wix doe wrench, a Snap-On chisel (can’t help but always grab them when cheap), $1 table Mac 20oz ball peen and screwdriver, Pexto flat sided awl (similar to a yellow Billings I have), Husky 1/4 spinner, Craftsman dog bone, possible Snap-On bent nose pliers, Crescent, Wizard vise grip,S-K Wayne pliers.

I just realized no sockets. GOOD!

A yard sale stop is where I picked up the nice Stanley long wood chisel, and Snap-On dbe. The seller didn’t want to sell any hand tools individually. He had three boxes of tools for sale. Kind of tough to expect yard sale customers to show up and buy a carry box of miscellaneous tools for $40 a box. Maybe at $10.

He had this rough, ugly anvil for sale, asking $250! At best guess I think it was an older Asian import. There was a smeared marking on one side. The thing was so porous it looked like cast swiss cheese.

Wow, you guys are killing it!

Nothing worth taking a drive today, for planned - I did stop at a TOO on the way home from a fruitless hardware store run, that actually netted me some the 2 strand, 18 gauge flat sheathed wire I was after in the form of a cord that I think is for an old Sony PlayStation? Same wire used on the Singer Featherweight 221! What are the odds?

I needed it as the old 221 wire is near dead, certainly not safe to use, now that I have the other half of the three prong plug that plugs into the machine, between the AC plug and the foot pedal.

Cord.jpg

Also got an odd X-acto knife handle that looks like for a pro artist or carver?

At a local antique store and came across this thing. It's huge and heavy.

At first we said, "this would be cool hanging up in the garage as an art piece" then saw the price tag of $280.

I googled FW Wolf and came up with nothing. I searched GJ and found nothing.
Anyone know anything about this?

A sale today in Beaverton consisting of a pole barn and large yard FILLED with tool-related stuff, literally hundreds of collectible tools in various states of condition with heavy rust presence due to living in an unheated barn for many years. I thought attendance would be off due to the long weekend but I was wrong. Thinking I arrived early I was too far down the line for the first group but made the second.

I went home with three items, $10.00 total: a Roper Whitney No. 5 Jr. punch set missing one female die, which I will sell since I have one, a Winchester W130 double end plane and a pair on seemingly unused Brink & Cotton pipe clamps in their original boxes which I will also sell. The pictures are post-clean up.

I returned to the local junk store this morning to pick up the other sign for a friend that is out of town for the weekend. There was also an edger that I had looked at yesterday but passed on for $30.00. The edger had a lot of issues. I wanted it to make a mini stump grinder out of. Today I offered him $20.00 for it and he accepted my offer. Then on the way out I spotted a Boker box in the back of a display case. I ended up giving him $10.00 for the knife and $30.00 for the sign. So a grand total of $60.00 was spent today!

Thinking I arrived early
Which sale was this? I didn't see anything really interesting in the city today.

Cool! I may swing up there tomorrow. I am going to be on the Willamette for the 4th, out by Estacada, and this will give me something to do in the meantime.

I have an st-1218 and st-1230 ,yours for the asking but they are newer(boring) Williams logo,I'm positive they are not from the 50's,60,70s,

Thanks for the offer!! I'm going to try to match the era--especially the 1218 which has the the matte finish on the lower half.
