You look like the perfect buyer to ask.. I’ve asked before and no one answered seriously. I understand the joy of buying quality USA made tools.
However; what happens with all this stuff after you buy it? Are you making “sets” of “everything “? Selling “everything” on eBay? How do you recover your investment?
Thanks
James
I think its really a personal thing for each person that has found their way here. It seems if asked, everyone has a different story in how they got started with the picking thing we do. For me, it started by chance.. I was cleaning out in my smaller shop and found an old tool box my grand dad had made up me around the age of 12 or so. Looking through it, I remembered a lot of the old tools he had given to me to start me on my way to manhood with my own tools to use as needed down the road. I pull out an old ratchet... its got this really cool looking pebble back ground, and a company logo I had never seen before... PLOMB... Hey that O is swapped with an upside down triangle.... What in the world... Start investigating these Plomb tools.. wow! So much cool information. I knew right then and there I would love to have a full set of these Plomb tools. and it started... Looking at flea markets, estate sales, garage sales... and then I googled them. And it lead me to this place. Whats this.. an entire thread for PLOMB tools?!?! I'm in! I stared with Plomb, and the more I learned the more I loved the hunt for them on weekends. It gave me something fun and exciting to do! And that's when I found the Garage sale thread... and started really learning about all kinds of things that the folks here find. The knowledge these folks have is more valuable than you can imagine. I'm not as heavy a buyer as I once was. But now Its quality stuff I look for. So, thanks Pop for getting me into this years after you made me that tool box! And when I think about it, he did the same thing. He hit sales and bought tools in his later years.

Two sales today--both with low expectations. First was a bust, while the second produced only a 1960's Craftsman #4395, 3/8" socket wrench set with the plastic blow mold insert and a Herbrand socket subbing in the 7/16 slot. $5.
Then I hemmed and hawed and finally decided to risk $1 on the Packard 7" ignition pliers (don't know what else to call them). I can't find any information one way or the other on them related to the Packard Motor Car Company, so I'm guessing there is none. The name and "Alloy Steel" on either side of each handle are the only markings.

Thanks for the assist, RagTop!

Went to two sales yesterday. First was mainly for a buddy interested in a radial arm saw they had for sale. Price was too high and they had almost nothing in the way of hand tools so I headed for the second sale which started an hour later than the first.

The proprietor came out and told us they had spent the last four days pricing items and the house was packed. If something was unpriced, just ask. I was first in the garage. Not a single item was priced--my kind of sale! First I positioned myself in front of a 3-box Stack-On stack that was mostly empty but snagged a couple of Snap-on items. The majority of tools were in a 1x2 foot plastic bin that I went through next--stopping only to mention to the lady overseeing the garage, that exhaust hose from the stand-alone air conditioner she had plugged in was doing more to heat the garage than the vents were to cool it.

Turns out the PO had a few SO items but mostly **** Chinese--with almost nothing in between. I think I came away with most of both the SO and the in between. $10 Total.

Snap-on:The In Between:
DS 2422 Ignition wrench (1967)No Name Wood Handle P1
2 DEX 110 Ignition wrenchesPenncraft 9875 Needle Nose
OXA 100 Ignition wrenchIndestro 4773 Offset Screw Driver
AD6 Adjustable (too shiny to use!) (1985)K-D No. 203 Battery Terminal Pliers
OSH 20 5/8 Hex ComboCamillus 1 Hawkbill Knife (apparently unused)
GSOEX 20 12pt Combo
F10LB 3/8 Hinge Handle (1962)
SSED 68B Electricians Screw Driver (OP added wire insulation)
SSD6 Screw Driver

Note on the K-D No. 203--They look roughly forged with a prominent seam down the top and bottom length of both handles. Also, on the inside of the handles, near the pin, one has forged-in X-X with a 1 beneath and the other handle has X-X with a 10 beneath.

The tang stamp is Camillus' last, used from 1989 to bankruptcy in 2007.

Couple of garage sales this morning netted one expensive cup of coffee. First sale local had some old screwdrivers I passed on. Second sale was a 20 min drive away. They advertised "Tools"..... and they had a garden hose. Luckily they had a Dunkins on the corner so a cup of coffee and a couple of gallons of expensive gas burned up driving I returned with nothing. I contemplated running over their garage sale sign on the way out of Dunks.
When you get there at 6am in the dark, most homeowners get angry.
Well done! Nice set. I was wondering if it was the more uncommon BM marked but it’s circle K. Either way, nice set!
While looking through my 3/4" reserves I did find a BM marked 1-3/8" ,3/4" drive socket...but the "new " set has a 1-3/8" circleK. I did, based on catalogs pin it down to 1945. Only discrepancy I can find is mine is badged inside the lid.I looked through all the catalogs and never found an exact match.

I was pretty happy with today’s efforts. My regular copilot slept in so my next door neighbor filled in, expertly operating the Google maps app. First sale had a Swingspout and a couple of unremarkable nutdrivers. 7AD12ED0-25FF-4C6D-9EFA-87DC2096F832.jpegSecond sale opened early and I was just in time to see the sander I wanted to buy walking down the street. I did get a rusty box of treasures at giveaway prices plus a Proto slide hammer.34D2EC20-4036-4E5D-9BC5-FB10C94587D2.jpegA5D87358-8B28-40A5-B877-51685AAF0535.jpegA460376B-7375-48F1-8B2B-74794C512BB3.jpeg
Next sale netted a minnow trap67FC869F-FDD1-4A2C-99FA-B1D9E526FED7.jpeg
Next was a TOO we almost missed with tiny signs. I’m really glad we found it. Along with a few other tools was a Gerstner box that I just couldn’t pass on. I just need to glue up one drawer.CB27F985-D0D5-4D87-B473-C83EE1CE0E6E.jpegE8D551DC-E04F-4142-A3E6-D8D0DAB39665.jpeg92CAC0D2-5EEA-4220-A86D-645577B8B838.jpeg

Apparently I’ve reached my limit on edits so I will continue here with the final picture of my new Gerstner box

The final sale had a well used small Kennedy box and a Craftsman Crown carry box. They each came with some equally well used tools.

An impromptu stop at the local pawn shop turned into a good idea. I sifted through the buckets of loose tools and picked what I liked. As a test I brought the pile to the front. $5 she says! Figuring she was in a good mood I asked about the SO torque wrench. It had been in the shop for about a year. She said make an offer, I want it gone. I offered $40 she countered at $45. I didn’t hesitate to pay her.00AA7A7C-7A28-4174-8C9F-5A95451BC95D.jpeg
In addition to the torque wrench
2 Ridgid pipe wrenches
Klein adjustable
Proto 1 1/2 socket 1/2” drive and unused
SK-Wayne extension
Taylor instrument company pocket thermometer

The thermometer is neat. I haven’t seen one before.

Don nonchalantly does a drive by gloat of a big Gerstner box Nice

My haul wasn't quite that extravagant, but I'm still happy. After two flops, we hit a repeat of last weekend's sale, where I got the Craftsman vise. This time was a little harder, and a little easier. There was some stuff gone, but the other stuff had been strewn about the room, so there was less walking space. Did OK crawling through the detritus, found a few goodies of interest and of decent quality. MLW went through a bookcase, and found a few books of interest to.. One will be on its way to Mark for Scanning, along with another box full, soon.

PXL_20220827_220948705-X2.jpg

Round 2, Durham parts box, Audels Engineer & Mechanics guide 8, Swest jewelers supply catalog from 1993, Huot drill index w rusty bits, unmarked socket, Lee Valley Right Angle Assembly clamps,, Husky, Xcelite and 2x unmarked screwdrivers, Plumb Autograf hammer, military rifle cleaning rod set, guessing for a fishing knifeknife sheath (last 3 in the house), box of #24 x 5" wood screws, 2x SS handles, Millers Falls & Irwin brace bits, power driver bit,Waldes Truarc 2 way snap ring tool, Channelock dykes, cheap Chinese needle files again, bottle of brass screws, 2# coffee can of copper nails.

The next stop was the ATM, the bakery (new sourdough starter, I killed ours thru neglect), and some snack. (no pix, sorry)

PXL_20220827_220329417-X2.jpg

The next stop was at a Flea Market held at the local Moose Lodge, a place I drive by almost every day, but have never stopped in before.. They had a food booth, but I wisely avoided that, probably missed a good steak sandwich It was outside in the parking lot, so people had their dogs, a bonus, but we left ours in the car. A couple of vendors had tools, but nothing of real interest. This guy was thinning out his excess, and charging realistic (but low) prices for things. Paid more than I wanted, but did not feel ripped off. Well below 1/2 ebay sold listings.

Husky CS 43 half inch ratchet with 2 patents from 1951 & 61, Proto professional 3426 tappet wrench (my first), 2x Proto 5249 3/8 drive ratchets, one with a black face, the other silver, Proto 4749 1/4" drive, Plomb 1/2" x 10" extension, Plomb 4749 1/4" ratchet, long skinny Herbrand 261 brake eccentric wrench, Herbrand Hinsdale 3/8" socket and Sliding Tee H7M, SK ignition wrench I2224.

All in all a decent day, but not a Gerstner day.

This morning I woke up after having some weird dreams, been having a lot of odd dreams Since my parent’s passing and I just couldn’t go back to sleep. So I scanned Facebook market place and saw a estate sale not too far away that seems promising. When I got there I saw a sign with color tabs and prices for each color. I didn’t noticed it was a professional company but none the less I figured I was already here so I might as well check it out. When we finally got to go in the garage it was like a stampede of people going. I watch some folks pick up hoards of stuff and it seems like they weren’t even looking at what they picked up. I started looking closely and one of the item nobody seemed to pick was the snap on breaker bar. I noticed the odd twist and figured I’d gamble on $10 for it. Then I found the double flare tool kit for $10 and since I was not too happy with the cheap dies I had at home, I figured this was a no brainer. As I make my round to the next table I found that box of pullers and saw the combination puller set for $20, since all of the snap on pieces was there I went ahead and picked it up too. There was some other pullers in the set and there was the bolt puller set by RIMAC but I couldn’t get the pics to load due to size. Only got the jumbled pile which is what I saw when I opened the box. As I kept looking it seemed folks started tripping over each other and couldn’t move fast enough it seemed. So I decide to get out of the garage to check the house out where there was nothing worth while in there. So back to the garage to pay and I decided to make one more round and that’s when I found the red tacky grease which looks like only a couple of finger tip of it was used. All in all I paid $40 for it all.

Yeah, Don ***** for the Gerstner!

I managed to drop off the notifications a few days back so had to do some catch-up...

I had a fair day -First dy of my (hopefully) big Weekend. Maybe Il find soem more tomorrow when averyons is open - it is down by about half from prior pre-covid years, but it is what it is...

First score -I've a couple of times picked up award plaques, to reuse for mounting deer horns; I'll also get a 4X6 brass plate out of it - Also had some old early 20th century leather workers duckbill tongs, and a tiny pair of (working) pliers:

Y1 - Plaque, Shul-aoms L pliers mini pliers.jpg
then soel old 50's 60's Xmas ornaments, we jsut un packed them and about 1/3 are the "lantern" style but ythe ladies were pleased with my PU:

Y2 Xmas.jpg

I did find a Coleman Oven. the box doesn't indicate, but its Un-fired! ( think this is my third overall and second un-fired! - along with a small Mostly Metal workers hammer (but has a tack puller claw?)

This little table/tray caught my eye - I'm making it into camp gear since the legs make it compact and the tray helps keep things from falling off, (keys and cartilages come to mind....)

Y4 table.jpg

And lastly a Snap-on Speeder (47), BluePoint DBE, (It's model A brake adjustment.) and another "Perfect Grip" Driver for the collection.

Here is a portion of the stuff since my last visit.
Love the Oilzum clock and the flamboyant pontoon fenders on that red pedal car.
But now Its quality stuff I look for.
Nice to "see" you, Rags! (Newcomers should not be fooled by the modest tone - one of our best and most prolific pickers ever!)

I guess it was 'Screwdrivers and Pliers day' (Lugz 2022_43) for me at the flea this morning.

2022_43A.jpg

- PLVMB collectors will recognize the long john silver at the top of the layout.

Underneath that on the right are...
- a nifty wood-handled screw-holder jobbie with a name I can't read yet, which could turn out to be my fave find of the day
- A script New Britain, which is a very rare brand for me to see on a screwdriver, destined for one of my wrench sets prolly
- And if anyone recognizes the one with the 'THEE Ohio State U' color theme, pipe up, or I will figure it out by the Phillips license number later
- The little double offset is a Snap-on

On the left are...
- a BELL SYSTEM pre-Stanley North Bros "YANKEE" cabinet screwdriver
- and a modern curiosity buy I have zero knowledge of called a ScrewTriver (snic) from JAW, which may be a ref to JAWCO/ JAW Mfg, the Pennsy outfit who made the nut-on/off type re-threaders.

The pliers etc are...
- unknown antique with a stylish almost ornamental cloverleaf in the jaws and gorgeous markings, guessing farriers, maybe?
- Long C Vanadium needlepoints
- Utica/Signal Corps TL-103 dykes
- PEER West Germany snap rings (the one with the volute spring)
- and last but not least in the pliers group, what could turn out to vie for my fave find of the day, G.M. Co. ignition pliers

Finally,...
- the sole wrench in the haul, a Walden-Wooster (I hardly ever see this marking style, I think I may have only one other)
- a pouch for one of my 1945 HKP parrotbeaks! FINALLY! I have three, two 1945's and one 1942, and I've been "looking for" (i.e., going out and hoping I find) pouches for them for a few years now. This definitely vies for top 3 fave finds.

I will be posting many more photos in the appropriate VB threads, but two add'l close-ups are attached below.

So, on Saturday, there were two estate sales that actually looked interesting enough to break my self-imposed slow down. And one did not disappoint. The other was not so impressive unless you wanted to buy an older car. Lots of cheap tools, but I was able to pick out some goodies.

At the second stop, I found a Plomb 5266, a Snap-on deep socket tray, and in a couple bags of sealed but misc. 1/4 sockets some good Proto and Craftsman drive tools to finish out some sets to be put up for sale. At the first stop, I found the two 1/2 ratchets: an older Wright with chrome loss, and a very early Thorsen round head with the TT mark.

Right now, I am in a slowdown period, as I go through my collection/hoardings and see what I really want and need, and what can be "purged" so to speak. But, in time, I will be right back at it, no doubt.

Well, it's Official. Beemer's self imposed slowdown was self unimposed in 5 days, 20 hours and 58 minutes. Someone check my math.
Congratulations, Beemer, for holding out as long as you did!

Nice Gerstner!! Pull out the bottom drawer and front and you might find a date and autograph by the craftsman that built it.

Well, we only had two players, or four, if you really stretch the normal rules of a pool. And we didn't do too well!

BB was over...
I give beemer 6 days before he regresses.
I was way over...
I'll take 13.
Southern83 was over and unspecified.
My bet is over 6 days.
ecotec's reply, which was to BB, whose pick was 6, maybe came the closest if one was being very lenient, since "Not even" qualifies as less than 6.
Not even… estate sales start on Thursday…

I can’t remember exactly… but I think Beemer made his comment on a Tuesday or Wednesday. I was just implying that since a lot of the sales started on Thursday… even if he only went to sales that were only on the way to places he was already going to… that he would find something on that Thursday.

Even when you are not flush with cash… you can find a few dollars for something…

One day I will probably have a thread about my Matco box finally giving up the ghost from too many estate sale finds… and Beemer buys 20 times what I do…

We all knew what you meant, ecotec, but in GS thread pool terms, we've always insisted on hard numbers! :)

Yeah yeah, Beemer, we went through this definition thing already, and when it's two former hosts having the same all-in-good-fun interpretation vs one former host, guess who wins? ;) "Stop" and "slow down" are leadfoot addict terms for a next speeding ticket pool, anyway. Easing off the picking for awhile is closer to the diet analogy. Haha. And just as capricious. But if you want to be technical, we didn't do too well for first 'slow down' day back, either! :)

Of course! What makes it funny is we have all had longer spells without declaring a slowdown.
I have had longer skunked spells than his slowdown. Like 6 weeks or more was not unusual, especially the last few years when things got so crazy busy.

Hmmm, I had something to say about BMW, but anyway:

Today was very slow. despite it being "the big day" I self isolated from the "main drag," as its always just way too crowded and I don't need anything so bad to risk C-19, especially the day before surgery. The side streets are easier to avoid people and concentrations.

Mostly covered yesterday, today I'm kicking myself for passing on a 42 star flag then, and it was gone today - I looked up later - 1890 - I should have realized then it was OLD... NOT common (we were at 42 a very short time) and pristine, looked almost unused. Live and learn.

So just a few things today - An egg carrier - I needed a second as I'm constantly looking for the other one...

I swear I had that cap gun as a kid. Whats the point of the egg carrier? How often do you take your eggs on a trip?

I remember seeing those in catalogs when I was a Boy Scout. Always wondered how well they actually protected the eggs.
