I've always heard those tools called Pipe Tongs. Google images produces lots of hits.

Another local Estate Auction, ended Thursday night, pick up was today. I got this Cornwell set and ratchet, all in a Mac Tools box for $26 with buyer's premium and tax. 3/8" to 1" with the 1" being a MAC. I was outbid on several other listings, nothing, including this set was needed to bid any higher.

Yesterday’s expedition was another of heightened expectations and truncated realizations. First of two stops promised power tools, a couple of tables full of hand tools and two CM stacks but the wide shots failed to convey the extent of the HF sourced tools. Beyond an impressive 20-ish inch J.H. Williams adjustable there was nothing that interested me and I left empty handed.

The second sale displayed several vintage socket sets in metal boxes but didn’t open its doors until 2pm. I got held up with other errands, arrived 30 minutes after the start and was obliged to wait another 15 minutes to enter—by which time the vultures had picked their way through the choice bits. What was left was a ½” Klein set with mostly original sockets but no drive tools that didn’t interest me, an empty Wright case, a no-name red case chock full of diverse sockets, and a small (probable) S-K case with offshore sockets.

I picked up the Wright case and then looked through the red one, noting three Wright sockets. Searching the dark corners of the garage turned up a total of six Wright sockets, the 3” extension and universal, but no drive tools. I made the combined deal for $4. The sockets are “R” coded (1975) but the ’75 catalog #500 shows the #310 set has the three largest sockets with 12 points. All mine are 6pts. The missing ratchet is the #3400 soft handle. In a rare turn of luck, the only orphan Wright socket I had was the 7/16” the set needed, although I belive from a different era. The universal doesn’t go in the #310 set.

My search also brought to light the Klein 671-4 rotary screwdriver, the SO SSD 4160 19.5”driver with plier teeth marks on the handle, the Blackhawk 34982 3/8d Lock-On speeder w/Gripline handle, date code -3 (1943) and a Blackhawk 3/8d ¼” socket. Grand total $9.

Rained Thursday, Clear Friday (no sales) raining now and expecting it to rain for 3 days. Nothing local so I opened the search a little and found one that looked promising. I had to convince my self to make the 36 mile round trip, but it was worth it in the end. Most of is was Craftsman, and he valued those the most. ($2 each) didn't seem to know any other brand.

Better than expected, not as good as I was hoping. Missed out on an early Coleman 242 that looked pristine as it simply wasn't for sale (I "bid" on it, but he wouldn't bite) and am kicking myself for losing a super short stubby blade driver (would have matched my Phillips...) somewhere between paying and home...

The "winnings" (and only $10)

Craftsman BIG nut buster, 1/4 Raised Panel RHFT, 1/4 Tri wing? Rat (stuck need to disassemble, clean and lube? - may be missing part - see 2nd pic)) - 1/4-3/8 SO DBE, 9 MM Combo, 2 SO drivers 3/8 17MM Socket, 5mm Socket Allen, 17MM Armstong, 6" green handle Thorsen Allied Adjustable, 3/4" hone.

Missing the heart spring Outlaw. There’s a pointed end that goes in the hole in the pawl, and a looped portion that catches the nub on back of that cover. Not the best design. I’ve seen the end that goes in the pawl worn down.

Yep, I was looking for kits 3bay, and they are pricey for a not highly regarded ratchet. I saw one that wasn't too bad, but turns out it's missing the spring... I like the looks and the handle though. Too bad. Maybe I'll see one busted another way...

A mish-mosh of tools from two flea markets last week.

Ford marked wrench, Armstrong T-wrench, K-D fork, 2 Blue Point dbe, Duro offset flare wrench, Diamond 6”. A few Craftsman. Snap-On, Mac and S-K sockets, Mossberg knurled socket.
3 Campagnolo wrenches together. Rusty Snap-On ratchet and hex key, Thorsen rat, Japan 1/4” knockoff of Craftsman V selector (probably Mark 1 brand). The Williams 1/4” ratchet and breaker bar mentioned a week ago. Champion Dearment, Mac hammers. No name 1/4 sockets in baggie.

If you can identify this (worn) 3/8 drive piece then you know somebody f’d up, got f’d up, or maybe even f’d up their work with this vintage tool. Picked it up as a novel find from a drawer of sockets.

I wonder if that was intended as a "finger tip grip" for spinning nuts on in tight places?

That is part of a swivel head ratchet, that my grampa had, but I think dad got rid of it some time ago. I've seen one on here with a name etc. You flip it to the side and it ratchets, forget how it reversed. Think 30-40s era. Round shaft, sized like a mini breaker bar.

We braved today’s rain as the only local estate sale was about 10 minutes from home. My wife found some Thorsen screwdrivers. We grabbed the Dunlap and Diamond pliers along with the Crescent dykes. The hacksaw is in the evaporust. I’m hopeful that the brand will make itself known tomorrow.

This afternoon, a neighbor who is aware of my tool predilection, alerted me to an unadvertised private estate sale sporting some vintage tools just a couple of neighborhoods away. $5.

L to R,
Vlchek V-Shield marked driver
North Bros Yankee Handyman 33H Spiral Screwdriver
New Britain D44 driver
Craftsman Amber driver
Walden Worcester Spintite 1/4" Spinner #31 (pitting obscures any digit that might be after the 1)
Tiny Beehive driver--I did a hack job reforming the tip that was basically a blunt awl

Mound, hadn’t thought of that name, but I’ve seen it on striking tools. I don’t know if they made cotter pin pullers.

Yeah, I thought the bike wrenches are pretty neat with the pebble-like look to them. Fairly desirable too from what I‘ve seen.

RTM, you’re right on about the swivel head ratchet. It’s from the New Britain NB-50 or equivalent.

Hadn't thought of that 3bay. It sold as a Proto but with the "NB" there, it might be a None Better. I'm including a photo of the other side which is stamped "PAT. PEND".

Just two items from the flea this morning (Lugz 2022_53), but both my-book goodies.

I don't know if the little burner is rare or common; I just like the brand name ("Neverout") and the fuel warning ("BURN ONLY KEROSENE ALSO KNOWN AS HEADLIGHT OR COAL OIL"), which ages it. Still has the packing inside. Patent notice, but not number or date. I will enjoy doing the research. I believe it was made by Rose Mfg in Philly. They made larger ones that were hung off early Brass Era automobile engines in garages.

I know I needed the short extension for my Bonney 3/8-drive collection, so I was excited to dig that out of a random lot that did not look very promising.

It was supposed to snow this AM, so I spent yesterday putting up the Xmas lights as it was the first day to have not rained in a while, and so I missed the one semi-promising sale, but I finished up, made it out for the 1/2 price hour and was still able to hit the dog park afterwards.
52541318239_1698688fff_c.jpg
So, for $5 I picked up the following: spool of wire, little metal box of taps, furnace control unit, Snap-on 5/16 nut driver, Williams DBE, Chrome X DOE, and two Bonney DOE's. Also, the contents of a red coffee jug:

after sorting out the trash (I think they just swept everything off the workbench into this):
52540569982_94108d0d6e_c.jpg
misc. stuff that comes in handy, but the highlights are some old Millers Falls coping saw blades, a Chapman ratchet, light brushes, and a telecom spudger.

Lugz, does the burner have a wick still? odd that ther is no sign of chimney clips of any type - mostly those wickies won't burn nice without one. Maybe it goes inside a rail type lantern case with an sit floe guide? :dunno:

I'm just now trying to figure it out. Is there a burner/torch thread on the VB? I'll post more photos there. I know I have posted burners before, because I have a few, but I can't remember where.

Solo trip to Jake’s this morning, and probably my last of the year, so not again till April. $16 brought home a couple handles, Stanley North Bros rat screwdriver, VACO struck rat screwdriver, Utica TS-35 torque screwdriver (which may be damaged), and a flying-V gullwing slipjoints.E9151C65-BF04-4EC0-AAEF-AE13367D2A23.jpeg

My finds today from a small resale/junk/antique shop in Marion, Ohio. Ideal 420’s with crimper $2, Ideal T strippers $1, and a free partial role of electric electric tape. Will cut off old Klein grips and regrip lineman pliers. Upon getting into better light, Ideal T strippers maybe only worth salvaging the spring. What I thought was gunk appears to be someone getting into something hot!

@Outlawmws I was thinking of torches, and the thread I was thinking of was old torches, so I'll just post here. There is no wick. Is that wicking inside with the copper coil or what? That little knurled thumbscrew turns two little barbed wheels inside the flattened flue, which I am assuming was to pull up more wick. I don't know.

Yep needs a wick. - I can't recall seeing one of those with packing/fill like that, so I'm thinking someone was trying to make it "spill/splash resistant" for a bouncy road? I'm thinking carriage or bicycle light, and installs inside a housing with a lens and reflector? its pretty small, and cars had much bigger ones typically.

How wide is the wick slot? 3/4"?
